The 4th Annual All Kids Fair takes place on Sunday, April 27th, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Melville Marriott Long Island. The event is dedicated to bringing together individuals, businesses, and nonprofit organizations with children from birth through high school age and their families. The All Kids Fair is part education and activities expo and part health and wellness fair. In over 80 exhibitor spaces, many available programs and services will be presented, including after school activities, birthday party ideas, schools, camps, health and wellness products and services, special needs, financial services, day cares, and tutoring. In four speaker rooms, some classes will be focused on the adults and others will be geared towards children. Topics for the adults include childhood obesity and treatments for varicose veins from pregnancy. Classes for the children

and their families to enjoy together include music, crafts, and fitness classes. For their attendees’ convenience, a new addition to this year’s event is free valet parking. Also, QuackerJack of the Long Island Ducks will be visiting and taking photos with the kids. Many non-profits will be participating in this year’s event. Those who bring non-perishable food to benefit The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network) will receive raffle tickets to win desirable prizes, such as Long Island Ducks tickets. Penelope’s Odyssey will once again offer simple cheek swabbing of adults for the lifesaving National Bone Marrow Registry. At last year’s event, Lori Schneider of Penelope’s Odyssey shared that she “enjoyed the day and all the people we met. I am amazed at how many wonderful businesses and organizations you had represented.” Last year, 26 altruistic people were swabbed, and she hopes to

Setting Records Blue Point Elementary students leaped to new heights and had a recordbreaking performance during this year’s Jump Rope for Heart school fundraiser for the American Heart Association. With more than 100 students participating in the event, the building was able to raise an astonishing

$6,330. During the monthlong initiative, the students worked to not only raise personal fitness levels, but also awareness of the importance of maintaining one’s health. During their physical education classes, the students discovered new and fun ways to jump

Discovering The Passion To Do What You Love … This is the topic I selected for my upcoming presentation at the annual C.W. Post Honors Conference, a oneday schedule of seminars and panels, lectures and performances, all centered around a common theme, this year’s being Creative Engagement. When initially approached about the prospect of being a part of this Conference, one I had attended each year of my own tenure at C.W. Post, my first reaction was the usual mix of anxiety and sheer terror that comes when any form of public speaking is broached. And this, for an entire hour, in front of the best and the brightest my alma mater has to offer? I could feel the panic setting in, and the event was still months away.

wrestling with what, exactly, I have to offer this group of impressionable young minds, all at the point in their lives where they are desperately trying to do exactly what my title suggests – discover that passion which will drive them into a particular field, hopefully to stay, for a long and fulfilling career. I guess a good starting point would be the initial inspiration for my topic, a letter I received from a local reader many months ago, in response to a column I had recently published, stating: “I wanted to let you know that indeed your words were read and inspired someone… as a humble writer myself, I know that is all we really want after all.” Creative Engagement at its best, no? Just the knowledge that my words had reached someone is some of the most positive feedback one can receive.

It simply reaffirms the notion that what we do for a living should be more than a job; it should reach far beyond the scope of merely being a means to an end, a way to pay the bills, etc. Above all else, it should engage YOU. If others find a similar connection through you, so much the better, an added bonus. I still don’t know exactly what I will say once I step to the head of the classroom a little over a week from now. But I suppose a good starting point is simply speaking openly and honestly and attempting to make a connection. And if I can reach even one person and help them discover his/her own passion in life, I will consider it a success.

Suffolk County Legislators Bill Lindsay III and Kara Hahn honored Stony Brook University senior Neha Kinariwalla of Sayville on receiving a Gates Cambridge Scholarship. Kinariwalla is the first Stony Brook University undergraduate to have earned the prestigious honor. “Neha is a bright and dedicated young woman who has committed herself to excellence in all aspects of life,” said Legislator Lindsay. “As the first student from Sayville High School and Stony Brook University to receive the Gates-Cambridge

Scholarship I am confident that we will be hearing a lot more about Neha and her future achievements.” Gates Cambridge Scholarships are highly competitive full-cost scholarships that are awarded to outstanding applicants from countries outside the United Kingdom to pursue a fulltime postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. Works Of Wax Several famous historical individuals came to life during Sylvan Avenue Elementary School’s fourth-grade living wax museum event. The program, which is an annual tradition at the school, is a culminating event for the grade level’s nonfiction unit of study and incorporates various

aspects of history. To prepare for the event, the students selected historical figures of interest to them, read their biographies, and collected information on their lives and worldly contributions. The students then documented their findings on a research poster, which was put on display at the

museum. For the event, the students dressed in costume to represent their chosen person and remained still, as if made of wax. Once a visitor tapped the student’s “activation button,” they came to life as their researched individual and delivered a short autobiographical speech.

Bald For A Cause With the help and support of the surrounding community, the National Junior Honor Society at James Wilson Young Middle School in the BayportBlue Point School District collected $8,667 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, an organization set on finding cures for childhood cancer. Contributing to this

year’s successful event were the 65 individuals who volunteered to shave their locks, and the countless others who selflessly gave to the cause both at the event and through the NJHS’s online donation drive. As this year’s drive had a personal connection for the school – it was held to honor seventh-grader

Casey McLehose and sixthgrader Marco Daidone – the NJHS was able to surpass their initial goal as well as last year’s donation of $6,980. The school extends special thanks to the event’s two barbers, Lynne and Arlene from La Rage Hair Salon in Bayport.

Hats Off To Dr. Seuss

Every March students celebrate Read Across America Week by participating in special events. For teachers and principals, it’s an initiative to increase reading, created by the National Education Association and Dr. Seuss Enterprises. For elementary students, it means honoring Dr. Seuss on his birthday, March 2nd, and remembering his message of “You have brains in your heads. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” This year, with March

2nd falling on a Sunday, schools began celebrating on March 3rd, including Premm Learning Center in Oakdale. During the week, students dressed as story characters and their favorite books were read to them by seven guest readers. Among them was retired teacher Cheryl Bougatsos, who explained, “I love to read and I miss the children very much. Plus, it’s important that the students hear the beauty of the words.” “We wanted our students to experience the joy that comes from reading,”

said Principal Carolynn Hansen. “We held a spirit week leading up to the culmination of Read Across America Week and you could hear the children’s excitement and laughter each day in the hallways.” On the final day, students wore their pajamas to school and were cozy in the library as Goodnight Moon was read to them. Afterward, a treasure hunt was held to search for the items mentioned in the story, such as three little bears, clocks and socks, and mittens and kittens, to the children’s delight.

New Principal Selected

Bayport-Blue Point School District has appointed Robert Haas as the new principal of James Wilson Young Middle School, effective July 1st, 2014. Mr. Haas, currently an assistant principal at Bayport-Blue Point High School, will assume the role following Susan Haske’s retirement this summer. Mr. Haas is a veteran educator and administrator in the district, having begun his career as a grades 6-12 social studies teacher in 2001. I am looking forward to working with the district’s administrators and the middle school’s teaching staff to develop new ways to enhance current offerings and help ensure students are prepared to meet the high academic standards set for them. ” “As we considered the attributes we were seeking

in a new middle school principal, it was evident that a highly qualified candidate was already a member of the district’s administrative team,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Vincent Butera. “Mr. Haas has been an integral member of the BayportBlue Point School District for the past 13 years, and I am confident he will be a tremendous asset for our middle school program. He not only possesses a fine-tuned skill set aligned with the district’s mission of increasing opportunities and setting high expectations for all students, but also has a genuine level of openness and approachability that I know both parents and students will appreciate.” Mr. Haas holds a school building/district postmaster’s certificate, a Master of Arts in liberal studies, and a Bachelor of Arts from Stony Brook University. He has also coached a number of high school sports teams, including the 2005 varsity softball county champions.

Savoring The Days ‘Til Graduation

With less than forty school days of my senior year left, I am beginning to understand why people are always talking about savoring the moment. As a high school senior, I am very excited to be “in the home stretch,” even though this means that I am one step closer to leaving my home, my school and my family. With just about four months before I leave, I find myself spending more time with my brother. Lately, we have been bonding over the simplest things. Perhaps, this is because he will be sad when I

You should treat the admissions interview as a chance to share your goals, educational journey, future plans and excitement about the college. Although the interviewer wants you to feel comfortable, treat this interview as you would a job interview. Come ready to answer a variety of questions about yourself in a direct and clear way. Don’t be aloof or act too casual. Avoid cracking jokes, using inappropriate language or sharing too much personal information. Relax and be yourself, but remember that this is still an interview for college admission. Do be prepared to ask questions. There is a good chance that you will be asked if you have any questions. He is the peanut butter to my jelly; my little brother has always been there for me. Even though I am counting down the days before I hit the road, I am well aware that my days with family

are numbered. I know that I am going to miss them. Even though I will love college, I will miss playing catch with my little brother on the front lawn. I will miss my mom’s cooking, and I will miss my dad’s antics. As I cross off each day on the calendar of my high school career, I can say that I enjoyed every minute that I spent with my friends and family. When I start the next chapter of my life, I will not forget the memories that have been formed or the bonds that I have made with my friends, and most importantly, my brother.

It’s college application time and your teen has taken the SAT or ACT, kept up his or her grades, written a stellar essay and completed all college applications. There is one more piece to the college admissions puzzle that could potentially gain your teen the acceptance he or she seeks: the college admissions interview. “Not all colleges require a college admissions interview, but many of the competitive institutions do, as do some colleges’ departments or schools that require secondary admission,” says Eileen Huntington of Huntington Learning Center. “The admissions interview intimidates many prospective students, but we encourage them to approach this as an opportunity to put a face to a name, make a good impression and articulate face-to-face why they would be a great student at the college.” Huntington offers a few tips to students as they prepare for the college admissions interview: Do spend time reflecting on yourself as a candidate for admission. The interviewer might want to learn more about your reasons for wanting to attend the college and the components of your background that would make you an ideal fit. There are no wrong answers in an admissions interview, since the interviewer simply wants to get to know you better. However, the more you prepare, the more polished you will come across. Don’t present yourself as someone different than the real you. While you might feel tempted to embellish your résumé or act in a way you think might impress the interviewer, it is better to be honest about who you are and what you have to offer. That may even

She discussed ways to help the body recover naturally through food and practice as well as living with gratitude and reconnecting with “one’s own knowing.” She states, “Living in alignment with the seasons facilitates the natural development of a balanced state of equilibrium that constantly fluctuates around a stable center.” She spoke about the cycle of seasons and the elements associated with each as well as the Yin/ Yang. She emphasized that our bodies and minds are affected by the seasons, foods we eat and our attitudes. To live harmoniously with nature and be a part of it is what we should strive for. She shared the value of eating a traditional diet and even displayed photographs depicting the differences between those who consumed a traditional diet and those who consumed a modern diet. The small and most basic step she recommends is allowing the liver to heal between meals and the avoidance of alcohol, nicotine, caffeine and sugar. After taking questions from the audience, she conducted a Native American ritual to welcome spring. Karan also recommended some helpful reading material which can be found in the library. Legislator Tom Muratore and Legislator Bill Lindsay III had the pleasure of presenting proclamations to the Sachem High School East County Champions in the sports of Girls Basketball, Boys Bowling and Wrestling. The Sachem East Girls Basketball team’s record this season was 16-7. They were the Division One Champions and Suffolk County Champions. In addition to the team being honored, both legislators honored Coach Matt Brisson who will be retiring after the school year, for an outstanding career as a coach and teacher in the Sachem Central School District. Boys bowling won

the Suffolk County Championship over Middle Country after Sophomore Nick Caruana bowled a 300 and 299 in consecutive games to lead the Arrows to the title. The wrestling team is led by Coach Isaac Ramaswammy. For the second straight season, they captured the Section XI team championship, narrowly finishing ahead of John Glenn, 141.5-139, on the mat at Hofstra University. In addition to the team, both legislators honored student Mark Tracy on winning the NY State Championship at 182 lbs. “As an alumni and former student-athlete of the Sachem School

Governor Cuomo’s NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative is an effort to improve recreational activities for sportsmen and sportswomen and to boost tourism opportunities throughout the state. This initiative includes the streamlining of fishing and hunting licensing and reducing license fees, improved access for fishing at various sites across the state and increasing hunting opportunities in various regions. This year, Governor Cuomo unveiled the NYS Adventure License, which allows outdoor enthusiasts, boaters, anglers and hunters to consolidate their recreation licenses and benefits onto their New York State Driver’s License, and the NYS Adventure License Plates, featuring nine plate designs available for free to

those buying new lifetime hunting, fishing or park licenses in 2014. In support of this initiative, this year Governor Cuomo has proposed creating 50 new land access projects to connect hunters, anglers, bird watchers and others who enjoy the outdoors to more than 380,000 acres of existing state and easement lands that have gone untapped until now. These 50 new access projects include building new boat launches, installing new hunting blinds and building new trails and parking areas. In Long Island this includes projects at Rocky

Point Natural Resource Management Area, Underhill Unique Area, Kings Park Unique Area and Otis Pike Preserve. In addition, the Governor’s 2014-2015 budget proposes to: include $4 million to repair the state’s fish hatcheries; limit the liability of landowners who allow recreational activities on their properties, which could open up vast, untapped resources for additional hunting, fishing and many other recreational pursuits; and allow crossbow hunting once again in New York State.

The Youth Conservation Program will be held at the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club in Manorville. Each class is limited to 30 participants and selections are made by a panel that reviews a 75-word application. Enrollment in the class is open to all youth between the ages of 12 and 16 who have not yet taken their Hunter Education course. To date approximately 800 students have successfully completed YCP on Long Island. Participants who successfully complete the program will receive their Hunter Education Training Certificate. This certificate is required in order to purchase a

Allison Murphy, a junior in the Sayville RISE Program, took First Place at the Long Island Science & Engineering Fair and was also the recipient of the prestigious Irwin Wissner Award in recognition of her contribution to conservation biology. Allison’s science project, entitled “Haplotype Variation in Banded Sunfish (Enneacanthus obesus) from the Peconic River, Long Island, New York,” demonstrates that this threatened species, found on Long Island only in the Peconic River System, shows healthy genetic variability that is necessary for its longterm survival. This hopeful information will be invaluable to New York State Department of Environmental Conservation managers who are charged with designing further plans to protect both the species and their habitat in the

future. Receiving frozen fish samples of this threatened species from Dr. Timothy Green at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Allison conducted her genetics research in the high school genetics laboratory under the direction of Sayville Research Teacher Maria Brown. “Allison has worked very intently since becoming a RISE student as a freshman,” Mrs. Brown explained. “She sorted through hundreds of frozen fish samples designated to be discarded at BNL to find those that were good enough to extract enough DNA to obtain a better understanding of the unique haplotypes (single nucleotide polymorphisms) and their distribution within and between individual fish from six ponds in the Peconic River System.” During the recent Long Island Science &

Engineering Fair award ceremony, Allison showed tremendous surprise at taking the top award for her research project, although her work was indeed singular. “Allison is well-deserving of this recognition,” Mrs. Brown added. “She is a delightful young lady to work with and serves as a wonderful role model for other students, especially for females who are focused in science research.” Allison’s family members, including her grandfather: former Sayville Superintendent John Murphy, are very proud of her achievement and are equally excited about her next opportunity—Allison will compete in May 2014 at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair in Los Angeles, California with 1,500 students from over seventy nations. Game Farm To Open On April 12th, the Long Island Game Farm — Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo will be opening for its 45th season of providing Long Island students and families with a wide array of animals, education, and most of all — fun. From April to September, the Game Farm will be open on different days of the week for children and adults to explore. In celebration of its 45th season, the Game Farm will be offering

coupons on its Facebook page and website for $4.50 off a regular ticket price valid for the opening weekend. From domestic to exotic animals, the Long Island Game Farm has so much to offer, all while providing an outdoor educational experience. Unlike many other zoos, children get a one-of-a-kind experience at the Game Farm, where they are encouraged to engage and feed countless animals

by petting, holding, and bottle-feeding. There are even special areas within the farm, including popular “Bambiland,” where children get up close and personal with deer; and “Old MacDonald’s Farm,” where children get a glimpse of life on an actual farm with pigs and chickens. Musically Speaking clarinet during this year’s All-County Music Festival sponsored by the Suffolk County Music Educators Association. Tess was selected to perform alongside the Division I Central Concert Band. The ensemble represented the most accomplished music students in grades five and six from 15 local school districts and area private schools. Last year, Tess participated in the Solo Festival sponsored by the New York State School Woodhull Elementary Music Association, which School sixth-grader Tess made her eligible for Lambie performed on nomination to this year’s All-County Festival by

her school music teacher, Philip Tamberino. Her solo rating of “Outstanding,” the highest possible rating, helped her secure a spot to join nearly 100 other students in the All-County band. During the festival, the band performed four selections, which Tess and the other musicians had to learn in a month’s time on their own and with the help of their school music teacher. Three rehearsals were held over two weekends, and the resulting concert brought an impressive sound.

Landmark Construction As part of their study on the westward expansion, Blue Point Elementary School second-graders have been learning about the pioneers’ journey across the nation and the various landmarks they encountered or constructed. To deepen their understanding of the subject, the students recently participated in a Lego Architecture

– Famous Landmarks workshop with Kidz Under Construction director Fawn Silver. During the study, the students had the chance to construct replicas of several U.S. landmarks – Willis Tower, Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center and the Seattle Space Needle – using Legos. Working collaboratively, the students discovered

interesting facts about each landmark as they worked to construct their replicas. As both U.S. and world landmarks were discussed during the workshop, replicas of the White House, Eiffel Tower, Big Ben and the Leaning Tower of Pisa were also on display for the students to view.

Students Speed Skate It was standing room only in the barber shop at the Gary D. Bixhorn Technical Center (BTC) on Thursday, March 6th. For the eighth year in a row, barbering and cosmetology students joined forces to raise funds for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a non-profit, volunteer-run organization that supports pediatric cancer research. BTC is part of the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology. Head shaves, glitter tattoos, and green hair extensions were available for the price of a donation to benefit St. Baldrick’s, and there was no shortage of students and staff who lined up to participate. (Head shaves are a St. Baldrick’s tradition as they represent an act of solidarity with cancer patients everywhere.) Several women shaved

their heads and a few more shaved off small sections of hair above one ear. One teacher began a Shave or Save challenge and collected donations in two categories: one to shave her hair and another to save it. The category that raised the most money determined her course of action with all funds earmarked for St. Baldrick’s. In a close race, she raised slightly more money in the save category and inspired many friends, family, colleagues, and students to either participate or contribute to the cause. Day two of the event took place the following day at the Edward J. Milliken Technical Center in Oakdale, another Academy location, and on Saturday, the barbering students donated their time at an additional St.

Baldrick’s event held at Napper Tandy’s Irish Pub in East Northport. All told, the students raised more than $9,000. Said Luke Mahoney, barbering instructor at BTC, “For me, being an instructor includes much more than teaching my students a particular skill set. Salons and barbershops are often cornerstones of many communities and neighborhoods. I always try to instill a sense of pride in my students about being part of the community in which they work and the importance of social consciousness. Hosting these fundraisers and giving my students the opportunity to participate behind the chair, in addition to raising money for such a worthy organization, has been a remarkable experience for all of us.”

Connetquot Central School District’s OakdaleBohemia Middle School (OBMS) students recently participated in the school’s version of the Winter Olympics. The OBMS ‘Olympians’ were organized into different teams to

represent various nations from around the world. The students competed in a series of activities including bobsled, speed skating, ‘ice’ hockey, curling, cross-country skiing, and the biathlon. Scores were tallied and students were awarded

gold, silver and bronze medals. The event was organized by OBMS physical education teachers to help instill commitment, dedication, respect, and good sportsmanship among students.
