During the in-school program, Ms. Wynn explained to the students the importance of the Islip Town We Recycle America Proudly program, the schedule for collection, and the types of materials able to be recycled. Her presentation also included a recycling film and a demonstration on how

students could make their own paper by using scraps, water, food coloring, glitter and a blender. Lastly, students learned how many items they use each day, including T-shirts, pencils, tote bags and footwear, are made using recycled materials.

Founded in 1979, NYCOSH has worked to defend every person’s right to a safe and healthy workplace. They offer training, education, and advocacy. NYCOSH representative Susan McQuade told the students about their rights. They have the right to a fair and full day’s pay

I’m always looking for signs. Except when I’m not, which makes them all the more poignant and undeniable. Case in point, the one year anniversary of my grandfather’s passing recently came and went on March 13th, bringing with it the anticipated mix of sadness and reflection that these milestones tend to create. Back on that day, one year ago, shortly after learning the devastating news, I stared blankly out my sliding glass door at the tree directly in front of my apartment, only to be met

with the gaze of one solitary robin. Sitting. Staring. I must have stood at that door for a solid half hour, mesmerized by this tiny bird, alone in a barren tree, his eyes fixated on me. Was it a sign? Was it just a matter of ironic timing? Who knows… I chose to find solace in the serenity of the moment, comfort in the quiet. A month later, we discovered a nest of four perfect robin’s eggs at my grandparents’ house, the first of its kind in that backyard, ever. We marveled at how it seemed to literally drop out of the sky at a most opportune moment, manifesting out of thin air,

a precious symbol that life does, in fact, go on. Fast forward to last week. I ran quickly to the store for a bunch of roses to bring to the cemetery, knowing that the impending “blizzard” and freezing temperatures would most likely destroy them in a matter of hours. As I headed back to the car, a sign for birdseed caught my eye. And then, it hit me. Suddenly, I heard chirping. Loud, incessant chirping. I turned around, searching for the source… and there it was, a single, solitary robin, sitting on the top of the pile. Some signs, you just don’t see coming.

Writing the Way to Success Sylvan Avenue Elementary School’s fifthgrade students recently showcased their writing skills and patriotic pride when they took part in the Patchogue Elks Lodge 1323 essay contest “Why is it important to vote?”

After completing their essays this past November, the contest winners were announced this March and celebrated at the school. This year’s winning pieces were penned by Shannon Alden (first-place prize), Hannah Denton (first

runner-up) and Carlie Schwint (second runnerup). The Elks Lodge Foundation’s goal is to build stronger communities through programs that support both the youth and veterans alike.

PARP FOR PRE-SCHOOLERS - Parents as Reading Partners or PARP is a program designed for parents and children to participate by stories in the comfort of home. PARP for Preschoolers, “Chillin’ with a Good Book!” began at the Connetquot Public Library on Monday, January 23rd, and continued until Friday, March 3rd. During this time, parents and children read 20 picture books together. Stories could be chosen from the reading list or from their own bookshelves. Upon completion, children received a book, a prize, a certificate, a raffle ticket and an invitation to a special celebration featuring Small World Puppets at the library on Saturday, March 4th. This entertaining program was fun for the entire family. Laughing and learning is always the best!

Sinking Baskets Woodhull Elementary School students are working to stay healthy this winter as they take part in the building’s afterschool sports club. As part of the club this season, the students formed “The Gulls” basketball team and once again participate in basketball games against other area schools. The Gulls opened the season with a tremendous

victory over the Emmanuel Lutheran School team and followed up with another victory against the West Sayville Christian School junior varsity team. The team has two squads that rotate so everyone gets a chance to play, and indeed every student has already scored points. While the teams do keep score, Gulls coach Anna Bainbridge does not. “Their teamwork and passing

were terrific,” she noted, preferring to concentrate on the quality of playing and sportsmanship rather than the quantity of points. Sixth-grader and point guard Aidan Oviedo-Torres commented that, “For our first time playing as a team, we shot very well and knew our role on the team.” Woodhull looks forward to more excellent playing in the remainder of the season.

At the March 9th business meeting, the Sayville Board of Education approved the appointment of Dr. John E. Stimmel as the next Superintendent of Sayville

Public Schools, effective July 1st, 2017, to replace Dr. Walter Schartner who is retiring after forty-four years in education. Dr. Stimmel, an educator

for thirty-four years, has been a strong advocate for students. With over ten years in the classroom and twenty-four years of combined administrative experience which includes his positions in previous districts as elementary school assistant principal, elementary school principal, and middle school programmer, Dr. Stimmel joined Sayville School District fourteen years ago as the Cherry Avenue Elementary School Principal. Knitting for Donation

Starting on February 24th and completed on March 10th, some special teens at the Connetquot Public Library took part in a three session Knitting for Donation program. During these sessions, instructor Aimee Saccio taught teens the basic stitches necessary to create

a newborn hat. Upon completion, these newborn hats will be sent to Good Samaritan Hospital to keep newborn and premature babies warm. This is one of the many ways teens have the opportunity to earn community service at the library. While meeting

service requirements, teens have the chance to help others in their community in a productive and meaningful way. Teen Librarian, Angela Breslin insures these young patrons have access to a variety of programs that are educational, social, creative and fun.
