The March of Time “Most of us take for granted that time ﬂies, meaning that it passes too quickly. But in the mindful state, time doesn’t really pass at all. There is only a single instant of time that keeps renewing itself over and over with inﬁnite variety.” ~ Deepak Chopra Time, without fail, is the one thing we all wish we had more of, made better use of, didn’t squander so liberally… and the one thing we can never get back once it is lost. Even with this insight, though, it tends to continue to pass us by, just out of grasp. Why is that? What is the driving force behind our ability to let the minutes lapse into hours, the hours into days, the days into a downward spiral of being complacently, and consistently, unproductive? Some would point to the company we keep, the environments which surround us, the choices we make

along the way that lead us to find comfort - even in our misery, at times - but comfort, nonetheless. Is it our great fear of change, of upsetting the routine, which leads us to sit back and watch as the world parades on by? There are those who make it their mission to take action, regardless of the unfavorable circumstances they may find themselves thrown into; but these individuals seem to represent a slim minority. How do we, the others, this great majority who desire to improve our lot in life, follow suit? Perhaps if these instants of time were filled with the “infinite variety” Chopra speaks of, life would not seem so mundane at intervals. But the fluctuations which occur are often too minor to register as true growth. It seems we, as a society, are incapable of feeling we are moving forward unless we are in the midst of tumult and upheaval.

The wish, always, is to find this path to progress and to have it be a steady - if uphill - journey. That, I think, is something we would all find ourselves infinitely more capable of sustaining. Time, on a road such as that, would travel with us, even, on pace; rather than sprinting miles ahead, leaving us in the rearview mirror. It may pass regardless, but at least we would be along for the ride, active participants in how we choose to use it rather than bystanders waiting for some phantom sign that this is it … NOW is your time! In reality “the” time is when you choose to acknowledge it, when you make it your mission to take control of your destiny and be a part of the process, instead of allowing it to happen to you. We know this, we believe this in the depths of our souls… now we need to use this knowledge to create the beautiful future we envision for ourselves.

Weekend LIRR schedules to change during construction March 24–25 New signal testing and construction work will affect Long Island Rail Road train service between Penn Station and Port Jefferson, Hicksville and Ronkonkoma, and Penn Station and Port Washington over the weekend of March 24–25. If you are planning to travel on this weekend, please make note of the following:

Huntington/Port Jefferson Branch •

Train service between Penn Station and Huntington will be reduced from half-hourly to hourly, while trains between Huntington and Port Jefferson will run every two hours to accommodate the testing of new signals.

Buses will replace trains between Hicksville and Ronkonkoma for 48 hours due to construction related to the Double Track project.

Port Washington Branch •

Service will be reduced from half-hourly to hourly on the Port Washington Branch for 48 hours for Positive Train Control testing. These service changes will also be in effect on the weekends of April 7–8 and April 14–15.

Breaking Down Erosion Proactive designs propelled Lynwood Elementary School firstgrade students in Corinne Hinteman’s class in the Sachem Central School District as they used construction to stop destruction during a STEAM activity focused on coastal erosion. The goal of the activity was for each student group to construct a wall capable of withstanding conditions

that replicated erosion. To begin the activity students were supplied with clay, cloth, cotton balls, Popsicle sticks and tape. Utilizing the provided supplies, students began designing and constructing their walls that would need to withstand 20 simulated waves created by Hinteman. The walls separated sand from water and the success of each wall was determined by the

amount of sand that floated from the shoreline into the water. Following the initial test, students made improvements before the walls were tested again. Concluding the activity, each group engaged in a student-directed discussion about design improvements that could have positively affected the outcome of their experiments.

Internet Safety In an effort to gain valuable advice concerning safety while using the internet and social media, students at Ronkonkoma Middle School were recently visited by Crime Victims Unit representative Kimberly Malone for a highly informative presentation. Ms. Malone spoke to

the students about how their choices made while using their cellphones and the internet could have lasting impacts on both themselves, their family and friends. She advised them to think twice before sending messages, which could result in negative consequences affecting their personal lives.

The students were also given valuable advice on how to protect themselves online and were reminded to never give out personal information to strangers, share passwords with others and to maintain a private profile while using social media apps.

Welcome Friends of Greater Port Jefferson, Inc., DBA Welcome Friends

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters,

local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent not-for-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. Welcome Friends is currently in need of the following volunteer positions: Cooks, Assistant Cooks/ Food Prep and Pick Up/Delivery and a Grant Writer. Practicing Peace Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School recently welcomed Little Flower Yoga instructor Margot Harris to the school for a series of classes geared toward promoting relaxation and healthy lifestyle choices. Students learned to

incorporate activities from five key elements — connect, breathe, move, focus and relax. Through the use of these elements, and within a framework of respect for all students, compassionate communication and joyful exploration, students are encouraged to better

connect with themselves and their inner experience. This Mindfulness & Yoga program was made available through a financial grant provided by the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children.

Village of Patchogue’s Mayor Paul Pontieri, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Edward Romaine, and Councilman Neil Foley were kind enough to speak to Ms. Rodriguez, as well as the individuals involved in the program. The Recycled Rides program itself was honored for all of it’s amazing work nationwide, as well as in Suffolk County by the Town of Brookhaven, proclaiming March 6th as “Recycled Rides Day”. Joe Amodei, owner of The Collision Centers and CoChair of the Recycled Rides program, said “Today’s event is about the recipient, we are so happy for her. This is about giving back and giving a helping hand to somebody in need. With this proclamation from the Town of Brookhaven, we can now encourage more organizations to get involved with the Recycled Rides Program.” The Recycled Ride Ceremony took place on Friday, March 6th at 2:30 p.m. at the Village

of Patchogue Fire House. The vehicle was donated by Allstate Insurance and repaired by The Collision Centers through the National Auto Body Council’s (NABC) Recycle Rides Program. The program ensures deserving citizens without safe and operational vehicles have cars or vans that meet their needs and the needs of their families. Greater Patchogue Foundation & Village of Patchogue Fire House provided support and a venue for the ceremony. The charity, Driving 4 Change Foundation has provided the titles and registration of the vehicles so the Ms. Rodriguez could drive away that day. Being without a vehicle is very difficult, even the smallest of tasks can seem challenging. For the recipient, Recycle Rides plays an important role in getting people back on the road, but – more importantly – it helps open doors to better opportunities, to enriched quality of life, and to increased self-esteem.

A local Patchogue woman was gifted a vehicle at the Village of Patchogue Fire Department. Nilza Rodriguez was introduced to NABC’s Recycled Ride program, hosted by The Collision Centers through the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk County. Ms. Rodriguez is a single mother of three and has been working with EOC to help ease the burden of being a single income family. According to Anna Maddux of EOC, “Nilza is bright and articulate woman… a car would be one less thing to worry about as she manages to pay bills and feed her children.” Facing one battle and challenge after another, Ms. Rodriguez has been able to conquer many hardships and continue her goal to better her situation. Previously, Ms. Rodriguez would walk to and from work, as well as walk to pick up her children each day. Now after receiving her 2013 Dodge Dart, she can complete her day to day tasks much easier. Campuses Awarded The Arbor Day Foundation recently recognized Suffolk County Community College's three campuses as 2017 Tree Campuses USA, a national program created in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and for engaging staff and students in conservation goals. Project Happiness Sachem High School East in the Sachem Central School District has been chosen by Project Happiness as one of 10 high schools from across the United States to receive a scholarship to establish a Happiness Club supported by the “Life’s Good: Experience Happiness” corporate social responsibility platform. High School East was named an Official Happiness School based on its enthusiasm, creativity and commitment. Project Happiness is a nonprofit organization based in Cupertino, California. Founded in 2009, Project Happiness aims to teach people how to develop happiness strategies for life. The goal of the program is to reach 5.5 million youth with learnable happiness skills over the next five years,

Women’s History Month

To celebrate Women’s History Month, Eastern Suffolk BOCES Adult Education Literacy students at Bixhorn Technical Center studied Harriet Tubman, the most famous “conductor” of the Underground Railroad, also referred to as “Moses” because she led her people to freedom. With support and direction from Art Teacher Danielle Miller, Literacy students created quilts with secret messages. The activity helped the students learn about American history and culture. Through the lessons, they learned vocabulary words pertinent to the Underground Railroad movement such as railroad, conductor, oppression, safe house, and slavery. Throughout the activity, the students communicated in English, followed instructions, solved mathematical equations, sequenced, and presented their final projects to classmates via public speaking. The coded squares helped slaves escape to freedom because they read the secret message on the quilts much like reading a book and it communicated information to escape the South. The Literacy

students are learning to read and write English, concepts of communication, and working together. ESL Teacher Marianne Giller said, “Our students are motivated and enthusiastic about learning; especially American history and culture. They want to learn so they can understand what their children are learning in school and help them.” Students in the ESBOCES Adult Education Literacy Programs come from Sayville, Patchogue, Medford, Bellport, Mastic, Ronkonkoma, Port Jefferson Station, Centereach, Bohemia, and Center Moriches. Since beginning this collection, RPCV of LI has collected 1459 bicycles and 153 sewing machines. Family Fishing Festival The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks) will hold their annual Spring Family Fishing Festival on Saturday, April 7th, at Belmont Lake State Park. Additional sponsors for the fishing festival include the Natural Heritage Trust, the Fisherman Magazine, Renewal by Andersen, Suez Water, Dick’s Sporting Goods and radio stations 106.1 WBLI and 102.3 WBAB. “Freshwater fishing is an activity the whole family can enjoy, especially on Long Island,” Regional Director Carrie M. Gallagher said. “The spring fishing festival at Belmont Lake State Park is an excellent way to kick off the fishing season and introduce your family to

the sport with no license needed to participate. At this festival, you can learn about freshwater fishing opportunities on Long Island and local fishing clubs, try your hand at fishing for trout, and the kids can participate in the casting contest and other fun activities.” Festival activities begin at 10 a.m., and are provided free of charge. Activities include open fishing, fishing instruction, fly casting demonstrations, and fish cleaning services. DEC and local fishing clubs will also set up information displays. Loaner rods and free bait will be available to participants throughout the day. As the supply of loaner rods is limited, participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing tackle if possible. Children’s activities include the “Spring Fling”

casting contest, as well as hands-on educational displays by the DEC’s Education Unit. Children participating in the casting contest will have a chance to win some great prizes supplied by DEC’s I FISH NY Program and The Natural Heritage Trust. Governor Cuomo has expanded recreational opportunities of residents and tourists, positioning New York State as a recreation destination, connecting communities to state lands, and improving the quality of life. Governor Cuomo’s NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative is an effort to improve recreational opportunities for sportsmen and women and to boost tourism activities throughout the state. This includes streamlining fishing and hunting licenses, reducing license fees, improving access for

fishing, and increasing hunting opportunities in the state. In support of this initiative, $10 million in NY Works funding has been dedicated to fish hatchery repairs and 50 new land and water access projects such as boat launches, hunting blinds, trails, and parking areas. The Spring Fishing Festival has been designated a Free Fishing Event, so the freshwater fishing license requirement for anglers age 16 and older has been suspended for this event only. After 4 p.m., anglers will need a valid NYS freshwater fishing license to legally fish. The festival highlights DEC’s spring (March and April) trout stocking program in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Prior to the festival, Belmont Lake will be stocked with close to 1,000 brown, brook and rainbow trout

Upper Twin Pond in Wantagh, Oyster Bay Mill Pond, Massapequa Creek and Reservoir, along with 17 other Long Island lakes will also be stocked with trout by DEC, providing excellent prospects for spring fishing in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. To further encourage fishing, Governor Cuomo signed legislation in 2012 expanding the opportunity for free fishing clinics, allowing more New Yorkers to experience fishing for the first time by enabling DEC to increase the number of free clinics that can be held throughout the state. The Free Fishing Days program began in 1991 to allow all people the opportunity to sample the incredible fishing New York has to offer.
