ourth grade students at Connetquot’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School have been researching the traditions of Native Americans. Students in Mrs. Eskin and Mrs. Whitson’s classes have worked on a variety of projects, learning about how these first Americans lived, ate, worked and played. Students designed their personal wampum beads, described their design and significance and displayed their work in the fourth grade wing.

BBBSLI with the funding needed to match an “at risk” child facing adversity with a caring, screened adult mentor. The group exceeded their goal by collecting over 240 bags of clothing from all of AHRC Suffolk’s day programs across the Suffolk County, making them the first organization to reach their goal with BBBSLI for 2015. “I am happy because we are helping the community and Big Brothers Big Sisters will help children,” said Michael Kelly, Magnificent Voices Member. Magnificent Voices is using projects like this to get more involved in their communities and to find platforms to become better advocates for themselves and others. They are working together to create community connections that will further their reach and their mission. Being a part of this group and being involved in these projects has helped its members find their voices.

Student Spotlight That Old Familiar Feeling In Step

Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. That’s what they say anyway. Hence, my newfound appreciation for the art of yoga. It forces you to breathe, to meditate, to clear your mind of all unwanted stresses. Breathe in, breathe out. And repeat. It all started when, after 20 years of dancing, I decided that I needed something else to fill my time, to bring me back to that place where I felt like I was in shape, in control and in sync with my surroundings. After long days at work on deadline,
I settled into somewhat of a routine, using the classes to de-stress and unwind. Then came the winter, that vast, endless stretch of bitter cold, spurring the urge to hibernate until the first flowers decided to bloom. Unfortunately, stress doesn’t wait until spring, and so, come March, back to yoga I went. The first few weeks were a bit rough, what with the creaking bones and stiff muscles and, well, just a general laziness and lack of motivation. But, like magic, after getting back into a bit of a routine, there it was – that old familiar feeling of inner peace. For a few minutes anyway.
The key, I suppose, it to find a way to bottle that feeling and be able to call upon it when needed, to apply it to the world beyond my yoga mat. Perhaps that comes with practice. More practice than the once-aweek, sporadic schedule I have assembled for myself. One can only assume. One day at a time. One class at a time. One deep breath at a time. That’s all any of us can focus on in our infinite quest to find that deep, soul-searching sense of meaning to it all. No stress, no judgment, no pressure. Just you, alone with your thoughts. Breathe in, breathe out. And repeat.
HOW TO BE A HERO

Wouldn’t it be cool to run into a burning building to save a little baby or catch the criminal? We all know the definition of a hero: A courageous person who helps others without thinking of him or herself or the consequences that may follow. Also, everyone under the sun knows heroes are brave, selfless, caring, etc. But, have you ever thought maybe that’s just not enough? How can something so incredibly important to society have such a short definition and description? That’s because it’s wrong. A hero is an ordinary person who can and will go out of his or her way to help, care and solve people’s problems .... basically, anyone. I bet at least one, if not every teacher you had, told you to be kind to one another, and that you never know what someone else is
going through. I just never knew that person would be my best friend. She had some problems. She lives about thirty to forty-five minutes away from me. We didn’t go to the same school, nor have any mutual friends. We met through our parents. I never knew how close I could grow to someone who lived so far. We can talk for hours. Well, when talking for hours, you run out of things to say. When I asked how school was, I knew it was the worst and best thing I could ask. She admitted she constantly felt uncomfortable in school. She was jealous of all her peers’ happiness. Her parents were fighting a lot, she was bullied, and there was also the secret. This secret was one I knew for a long time and promised to keep to this day. Let’s just say it got to her. She became depressed and cut herself. I, being the friend I am, did what
I needed to do. I told. I told my mom to tell her mom to get her to a therapist. What I didn’t do is tell her secret. I never break my promises. I just told her she was getting bullied and cutting. But this, to any parent, is traumatizing. Long story short, it took three years, but I got her through it. But what does this have to do with heroes? Well, now I consider myself a hero. So does my friend. I’ll never forget the day I got the text: thanks for saving my life. Not to be selfish, but what I did took guts and time. I selflessly got my friend through, by far, the roughest time of her life. I think I am a hero. What I’m trying to say is that even the stupidest thing can keep someone from self-harm. Even the happiest of people go through depression. Please be kind to others, and be a hero by simply listening.

Five members of the Islanders team visited the children in the various pediatric units of the Nassau University Medical Center. They were welcomed by Dr. Politi and hospital officials, who took them to the various floors
and introduced them to children in the emergency room, on the 18th floor and in the pediatric outpatient practices. The children, who are big fans of the Islanders, were thrilled to have the players visit them and bring some

These mean an alignment problem. Proper wheel alignment is important for safe handling and long-lasting tires. • Low tire pressure, bulges or blisters on the sidewalls, or dents in the rim. These problems should be checked out as soon as possible as tires are the critical connection between your car and the road. “If you’ve hit a pothole and suspect that there may be damage to the tires, wheels, steering and suspension, or wheel alignment,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council, “it’s worth having a professional technician
check out the car and make any necessary repairs.” As a general rule of thumb, he advises, steering and suspension systems should be checked at least once a year and wheels should be aligned at the same interval. Motorists who drive in areas where potholes are common should be prepared to have these systems checked more frequently. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. On Friday February 6th, the world famous Cirque du Jour troop performed their exciting traveling show, using 5th grade students at Connetquot’s John Pearl Elementary School located in Bohemia. John Pearl Principal Ms. Susan White welcomed circus advisors Erin and Ray who would work with all the students over the course of a snow-shortened week. 5th graders were groomed to learn the special circus skills necessary to entertain their fans, classmates and parents for the energetic Friday afternoon
performance. John Pearl’s talented 5th graders worked as clowns, jugglers, daredevils, stilt walkers and masters of the Devil Sticks! The high energy music motivated the performers and audience during the amazing show! The Cirque du Jour program is designed to motivate students to participate more fully in physical education and cultural arts activities. Ms. White would like to thank Cirque du Jour coaches Erin and Ray, along with the school’s Phys Ed instructors Ms.

Fourth grade students at Connetquot’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School have been researching the traditions of Native Americans. Students in Mrs. Eskin and Mrs. Whitson’s classes have worked on a variety of projects learning about how these first Americans lived, ate, worked and played. Mrs. Eskin said that “The
children created Wampum belts with symbols that represent items that were important to them. They worked very hard on designing these belts, and the children are very proud to showcase their work.” The original Wampum belts were created using shell beads used by Native Americans in the form of cash. The beads are traditionally white, but
include colorful beads. Students designed their personal wampum beads, described their design and significance, and displayed their work in the fourth grade wing of Bosti Elementary School. Congratulations to all the creating 4th graders that worked on this Wampum belt project.

On a night when the Connetquot School District Board of Education normally take time to recognize the achievements of the community’s students and staff, Superintendent Mrs. Lynda G. (NAPSI)—While many people turn to prescription drugs to try to control migraines once they start, there aren’t any that are terribly effective and none that will stop the migraines before they happen. There is, however, another option and it doesn’t involve taking medication. The Problem Almost 5 million people in the U.S. experience at least one migraine attack a month. More than 11 million people blame migraines for causing moderate to severe disability and 91 percent of them can’t function normally during migraine attack, according to the American Migraine Study, which also reveals that the average migraine sufferer misses two days of work per year.

Fire Marshals Honored The Islip Town Board honored six Islip Town Fire Marshals for their bravery and efficiency at the March 3rd Town Board Meeting. Councilmen Steve Flotteron, John Cochrane, Jr., and Anthony Senft awarded Fire Marshals Michael Ippolito, Reese McGuire, Dan Karl, Garry Mowbray, Jr., Thomas Riedel, and Daniel Petrarca, with Town of Islip Certificates of Recognition,
thanking them for their exceptional efforts. Their outstanding dedication prevented potentially deadly carbon monoxide situations that could have resulted in the loss of lives caused by the harmful effects of carbon monoxide poisoning. Councilman Flotteron led the presentation stating, “Our Town Fire Marshals are equipped with individual carbon

monoxide detectors, an initiative that was implemented several months ago and that has proven successful in detecting carbon monoxide levels on a number of calls. Fortunately, because of this essential device and the quick thinking and response from our team, potentially deadly and tragic situations have been avoided and lives have been saved.”

On Sunday, March 8th, the library celebrated the decade of bellbottoms, platform shoes and rock music, with the sweet sounds of X-Sessions. Started by drummer and lead singer, Jim DelGuidice in 1995, the band entertained the near capacity crowd with its eclectic renditions of classic rock tunes. With bandmates, Eddie Profet, Jr., Pat Montefusco, Matt Schilling and Mike Quadrino, the band set the harmonious tone for a year of celebrating the past in
grand musical style. The band kicked off their ninety minute performance with effortless renditions of the Eagles Peaceful Easy Feeling and Eric Clapton’s Lay Down Sally. The audience swayed to the music in their seats. From Eric Clapton and Neil Young to Van Morrison and Billy Joel, the audience sang along, remembering the anthems of youth with affection and appreciation. “Bad Bad Leroy Brown” brought some to their feet and even dancing in the aisles. The band performed a few dedications and requests including Gordon Lightfoot’s Sundown for Librarian, Janet Eagan. Back to back Stevie Wonder songs highlighted the versatility and instrumentation of the
band, keeping the crowd energized and entertained. Perhaps their robust rendition of Chicago’s Beginnings, serves as a reminder of the next phase in the library’s history. As the library celebrates four decades of growth from a single trailer to a building filled with ideas bound in books and technology, rooms filled with music and knowledge, we celebrate the past by honoring the future. In addition to the auction, the staff at Jeni’s Main Street Grill, located at 54195 Main Road in Southold, will be donating all their tips on Friday, April 10th, towards the banner’s preservation.

Understanding Small Loans There might have been some sad faces after a loss against the New York Rangers on Tuesday night – the final faceoff at Nassau Coliseum for both New York based National Hockey League teams – but the New York Islanders scored big smiles with patients at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital on Wednesday afternoon as three players visited the hospital. Leaving their skates and sticks at the rink, forward Eric Boulton (#36), defensemen Matt Donovan (#46), and defenseman Brian Strait (#37) delivered tee-shirts, beach towels,
and hats to the patients and their families. Over 40 patients, along with family members, received visits from the players. The threesome walked through the entire in-patient pediatric unit and the out-pediatric hemotology/oncology clinic at Stony Brook University Cancer Center. They were able to spend some time with the kids, signing autographs, taking pictures and answering a ton of questions from their smallest fans. The visit was organized by the Child Life Program at Stony Brook Children’s and the New York
Islanders. Celebrating Child Life Awareness Month, the program has been sponsoring daily activities and visits which highlight what the Child Life Specialists do every day -- provide therapeutic, educational, and recreational activities to meet the unique emotional and developmental needs of hospitalized children. These activities include medical play therapy, games, arts and crafts, as well as specialized programs such as animal assisted therapy, music therapy, and birthday and holiday parties.
VOLUNTEER AWARDS DINNER - The Long Island Junior Soccer League Annual Volunteer Awards Dinner was recently held at the Huntington Hilton. Councilman Joseph Muscarella presented Past Soccer League President Addie Mattei-Iaia with a Citation for serving as a member of the organization’s Board of Directors for 26 years and as Long Island Junior Soccer League President for the past ten years.
