YES Community Counseling Center (YES CCC) is a local non-proﬁt organization with a mission to increase awareness about personal and community issues, prevent and treat substance abuse and to promote healthy families and a safe community.

YES Community Counseling Center has what they call a PACT (Partnering In Action and Change For Tomorrow) Initiative, which addresses our nation’s top substance abuse prevention priorities among persons aged 9-20 – underage drinking, marijuana, and opioid use. PACT seeks to understand patterns of youth and young adult underage drinking and substance use and implement targeted evidence based programs, policies, trainings, and education. Through community collaboration, they provide datadriven strategies and educational outreach to strengthen our communities’ prevention capacity to change the conditions by which youth and young adult substance use exists. PACT is comprised of ﬁve communities and school districts

(Farmingdale, Island Trees, Levittown, Massapequa and Plainedge) and collaborates with Farmingdale Alcohol Drug Abuse and Prevention Team (ADAPT), Levittown Community Action Coalition (LCAC), and Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC). They also partner with the Long Island Prevention Resource Center (LIPRC), Nassau County Police Department, and New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force. Those entities work together to prevent the onset and progression of alcohol and substance use among youth and young adults aged 9-20. Prevention begins when communities’ health problems are understood within their environment; only then can YES CCC effectively plan and implement strategic action. The PACT Initiative uses the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) to identify and select comprehensive, data-driven strategies to develop community solutions. The SPF is a 5-step planning process that guides the selection, implementation and evaluation of effective, culturally appropriate and sustainable prevention activities. Students Learn About Harmful Effects Of Bullying

During the week of Feb. 14-18, Connetquot Central School District students celebrated the Dignity for All Students Act, which ensures that all students are provided a safe and supportive environment free from discrimination, taunting, harassment and intimidation on and off school property. Students also learned about the harmful effects of bullying and promoted, through various activities, the positive impact and

importance of showing kindness to others. During an assembly called “Ryan’s Story,” presented by John Halligan, Ronkonkoma Middle School students learned they as individuals are in the best position to chip away at bullying. Mr. Halligan relayed his own tragic experience as a father whose 13-year-old son committed suicide in 2013 after being bullied since the fifth grade. “When you bully

someone, you bully the whole family,” Mr. Halligan told students. He also encouraged students to be “upstanders,” people who take on the bully, instead of bystanders. “You are in the best position to fix it [the bullying].” In closing, Mr. Halligan encouraged students being bullied to ask for help and not to be embarrassed and for upstanders to acquire assistance for those they witness being bullied.

Bellport Middle School Presents ‘The Little Mermaid Jr.’

The characters from “The Little Mermaid” will come to life when Bellport Middle School presents Disney’s “The Little Mermaid Jr.” on Friday, March. 25, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 26, at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Directed by music teacher Chris Loeschner, the production features a cast of 45 students and 15 stage crew members who have been practicing to ensure their performance is a memorable one. “We selected ‘The

Souper Bowl Of Caring Competition Collects Food For Those In Need

The Sachem High School East Interact Volunteer Club and Sachem High School North Interact Volunteer Club recently competed in the Souper Bowl of Caring III, which is a canned soup drive competition between

the two clubs that ran the entire month of January and beginning of February. Coming into this year, East and North were tied, with East winning in 2020 and North winning in 2021. This year Sachem North collected 669 cans

During a recent board of education meeting, Connetquot High School students and Suffolk Zone Award recipients Leila Joseph and Ben Lillie were recognized for their outstanding athletic and academic endeavors. Sponsored by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, the award recognizes one male and one female Suffolk County high school senior from each school district who exemplifies outstanding scholastic ability, physical education performance and leadership qualities. With a GPA of 91.28, Leila is vice president of student government and the Class of 2022. She is also a member of the National Technical Honor

Society and a peer leader. Leila has also acquired national certification as a clinical medical assistant. Leila said, “In my second period class with Ms. Perry, I learned I can be a leader and a team member at the same time. I’m able to encourage participation while also having fun with others. In the future, I’ll use these skills to make changes in, not only mine, but many other communities.” Ben has acquired a 93.72 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society and National Business Honor Society. He was accepted on the Academic Principal High Honor Roll and received the Presidential Award of Excellence. Ben is a member of the varsity volleyball and spring track teams and has acquired the

designations of All-County, All-County Tournament and Team MVP. He plans on pursuing a career in business at Sacred Heart University. “Health and physical education have taught me a lot of skills and has introduced me to a handful of unique experiences, all of which I plan to take along with me into my next chapter of life.“ Ben said. Director of Health, Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation Peter Melore described both Leila and Ben as students “who have such a positive presence in their classes and in our schools and it is wonderful that we can take time to appreciate their efforts.”

Top Of The Class Of 2022 The Bayport-Blue Point School District is pleased to announce that seniors Annelise S. and Amanda F. have been named valedictorian and salutatorian of the Class of 2022, respectively. The announcement was made during a recent board of education meeting, with administrators, faculty and family in attendance. In congratulating the students, BayportBlue Point High School Principal Robert Haas noted that becoming valedictorian and salutatorian is a tribute to working hard throughout high school. “It is one of the highest honors to be able to announce student accomplishments such as the valedictorian and salutatorian,” Ms. Haas said. Annelise was recently designated summa cum laude and an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction. She is a member of the National Honor Society and, as a violinist, is a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. Annalise participates in

high school clubs, such as SADD, the musical’s stage crew, Mathletes and as co-president of the Debate Club. She recently participated in Science Olympiad, where she applied her science skills in the trajectory, code busters, disease detectives, astronomy and green generation categories of the competition. She is also athletically talented and a member of the softball, track and field and cross-country teams. As a Girl Scout, Annelise is currently working on her Gold Award. She has not determined which college she will be attending this coming fall but plans on studying and pursuing a career in math and computer science. As salutatorian, Amanda is equally academically talented and involved in myriad extracurricular activities. She was recently designated summa cum laude and is an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction and member of the National Honor Society. Amanda is coeditor of the yearbook

and a member of both the musical’s stage crew and the Class of 2022 club. She also competed in Science Olympiad in the trajectory, disease detective, code busters and green generation categories. Amanda also enjoys drawing and recently entered the national Christopher’s Poster Contest for students in grades 9-12, a scholarship opportunity for students to use their creative talents to spread the idea that, as a unique individual, one can make a difference in the world. In addition to her academic talents, Amanda pursues her athletic skills as defender of the varsity field hockey team. Her interests lie firmly in the area of science, where she plans to pursue forensic science or neuroscience at Syracuse University this coming fall. The district congratulates both Annelise and Amanda on being top of the Class of 2022 and best wishes for success.

The Reboli Center Presents Through The Lens, Showcasing The Photography Of Joseph Reboli And Many Prominent Photographers

JOE REBOLI 5G PHOTOGRAPH STREETSCAPE The Reboli Center for Art & History in Stony Brook will for the first time feature the photographs of the late artist Joseph Reboli and several wellknown Long Island and New York based photographers such as: Donna Crinnian; Jeremy Dennis; Vanessa Fischer; Daniel Jones; Jacques LeBlanc; Timothy McCarthy; Jessica Neilson; Patricia Paladines; Matthew Raynor, Paul Scala; Leonid Shishov; Corinne Tousey; Marlene Weinstein; and Jo-Anne Wilson. The exhibit is titled Through the Lens and can be viewed through March 27, 2022. In conjunction with this exhibit, a companion show is in the History Room focusing on the life and work of nature photographer, Howard Eskin, a patron of the arts and dear friend of Joseph Reboli, who also collected many of his paintings. The Reboli Center is grateful to Lisa Eskin for lending items and for providing background information. JEREMY DENNIS PHOTOGPRAHER Eskin concentrated on photographing nature, and many of his pictures were published by the Audubon Society. In addition, there will be a slideshow depicting the evolution of photography from when the first recorded photograph was taken in the early 1800s. “Just as Joe’s paintings glowed with illuminous light, so do his photographs. Joe was not widely known for his photography, but he really enjoyed it and I am happy to share that side of him. I have known the Eskin family for a longtime, and am very proud to document Howard’s life and work as part of this new exhibit,” said Lois Reboli, a founder and president of the Reboli Center for Art & History. Irish Songs To Enhance St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations with Ireland, even though it may trace its origins to 18th century Scotland.

Music can enliven any event and often sets the tone for boisterous festivities. From dinner parties to weddings, music plays an integral role in many momentous occasions. Music also is front and center during St. Patrick’s Day parties and other celebrations. • “Zombie”: While not a traditional Irish folk song, “Zombie” was written by one of the best known alternative Irish rock bands, The Cranberries. It’s a powerful song that alludes to The Troubles in Northern Ireland. • “Danny Boy”: What St. Patrick’s Day gathering would be complete without the widely recognized “Danny Boy”? This classic was inspired by the Siege of Derry, and the song became renowned during WWI. Frederick Edward Weatherly, an English barrister and singer, put lyrics to “Danny Boy” in 1912.

Bellport High School’s new gaming club, eSports, showcased their impressive skills during their first competitive season, with both teams in the club finishing strong. The team of Andy Amaya, Ed Argueta and Ava Salinas focused on the video game Rocket League and won six out of eight matches. They finished No. 40 out of 7,600 teams from across the country. The team of Alexia Benjamin, Brandon Impellizzeri, Tyler Montalvo, Jamie Nobile and Anthony Pino, who

concentrated on the video game Valorant, also played hard, landing at No. 175. Both teams competed during a 10-week season, meeting three times a week after school. “It is pretty impressive what they accomplished,” said club adviser William Langhan. “Some of them never played the games with each other or ever before.” ESports was inaugurated at the start of the school year and aims to provide students who wouldn’t normally participate in

sports, drama or music with a platform to be a part of a unified team. The idea for the team was developed a few months prior to the COVID-19 school shutdown through a collaboration between Langhan and Bellport Middle School Assistant Principal Reinaldo Latorre. The pair, who are gamers themselves, worked to evolve their gaming team idea into an opportunity for interested students to use their gaming skills in a competitive setting.

Sarah Grace Foundation To Host Virtual 5K Race

The Sarah Grace Foundation for Children With Cancer, Inc. is once again calling all runners, walkers, cyclists and wheelchair athletes for its 2022 virtual 5K. Participants in the “Hugs for Sarah 2022 Virtual 5K” can run alone, with a friend or with a team, and all entrants will receive a custom race bib and medal. Registration is online only and will take place from March 21 to April 30 with a registration fee of $35. Dear Governor Hochul and Members of the New York State Senate and Assembly,

investment; it’s clear that that tactic is no longer successful, and the state needs to put its money where its mouth is.

As businesses, we were gratiﬁed when New York State passed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) in 2019. The CLCPA provides a road map for our state to reach a renewable energy economy, which will not only combat the devastation and unpredictability of the climate crisis but will lead to greater economic opportunity for New Yorkers as the state creates green jobs and invests in frontline communities.

Thriving communities for businesses to flourish: Thriving communities are good for business. According to the investment plan laid out by NY Renews, in addition to funding renewable energy investments, the $15 billion fund will also go towards improving public transit, public housing, and public schools, all necessary infrastructure for communities to succeed. Additional funding will go towards community-based organizations in neighborhoods most impacted by pollution and the climate crisis to fund local projects that increase our renewable energy supply, make homes and buildings more eﬃcient, and increase resilience to climate change. A signiﬁcant portion of this funding will go to low-income communities of color, which have received historically inadequate investments from the state and are most vulnerable to pollution and climate change. All of these investments will help New York communities thrive.

In recent years, however, we’ve become concerned that the CLCPA has not been funded. It’s clear that New York needs significant and consistent funding allocations to meet the goals of the CLCPA and realize the benefits of the law for New Yorkers. By allowing the law to remain an unfunded mandate, Albany will create an unstable situation for businesses and leave significant economic benefits on the table. This is why we strongly encourage you to allocate, at minimum, $15 billion in climate, jobs, and justice funding in this year’s New York State budget. These funds will benefit businesses and the communities which we serve in a multitude of ways: Creating jobs and increasing spending power: Investing $15 billion yearly in climate, jobs, and justice will create and sustain 150,000 good-paying jobs over the next decade. Creating stable jobs in renewable energy, building efficiency, public transit, and supportive industries will grow New York’s economy and increase spending power. This is good for New Yorkers, and it’s good for business. New York has the opportunity to be a business leader in renewable energy specifically, creating these jobs here in our state rather than allowing other states to overtake us in this critical and growing market. All jobs created — in renewable energy and otherwise — are good news for New York. Stable investments in building a renewable energy economy: Under the CLCPA, New York must run on 100% renewable electricity by 2040, and our entire economy must be carbon-neutral by 2050. We have made pitiful progress: just 31% of our electric generation comes from renewable sources, and since 2019, we have reduced our economy-wide emissions by only 6%. Moreover, New York currently sends over $30 billion out of state every year to purchase fossil fuels. This lack of progress is concerning for businesses: we want to be able to count on a consistent energy transition along with — or faster than — the timeline outlined in the CLCPA. We need to know that the laws of our state will be followed. New York has had three years to try to meet its own timelines without significantly increasing financial

Putting money back into the pockets of working New Yorkers: Included in this $15 billion investment are direct grants, vouchers, and cash payments to working New Yorkers, increasing their spending power and creating breathing room for families. These funds include: grants to homeowners to make their buildings more energy-eﬃcient (for example, through weatherization or installing heat pumps), transit vouchers for NYC residents and other residents of urban areas to encourage the use of subway and bus ridership, and LIHEAP credits to lessen the cost of heat during cold winter months. These payments will ensure working New Yorkers will have more spending power and more breathing room, which is good for business and good for our state. It’s clear that this $15 billion investment makes good business sense for New York. We strongly encourage the governor and legislature to include this funding in this year’s New York State budget.

To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great crossreference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping:

Make sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated regularly. Consider technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks: Give cash or gift cards. The service also scans online directories and search engines, prime sources for spammers and thieves, letting you know where your information is available, and provides advice on how to remove it.

Organize And Promote Traditional Seisiún Traditional Irish music can enhance any St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Restaurants and pubs opening their doors for events during the month of March, and especially on March 17th, may want to coordinate seisiún at their establishments for extra ambiance and flair. Seisiún is the Gaelic word for “session.” It refers to a mostly informal “jam session” at which people play traditional Irish music. Seisiún generally are unrehearsed gatherings of musicians that happen mostly in pubs. Seisiún may seem as if musicians are part of bands, but this is not necessarily so. Even if gatherings come together fluidly, pub and restaurant owners can facilitate the process. Here are some tips to make it happen. • Plan for and post regular seisiún schedules on your website. A regular seisiún can occur every Saturday evening and also on St. Patrick’s Day.

• Reach out via social media to Irish musicians and encourage them to attend sessions at your business. • Quiet crowds when musicians decide to perform impromptu, even when gatherings fall outside of regularly scheduled seisiún. • Keep songbooks available for patrons who want to join in. While many musicians or novice singers may be familiar with certain tunes, they may not know them all. Having lyrics and music available helps include many others in the fun. • Share news of seisiún at other pubs and establishments and they may do the same for yours. This way music lovers can enjoy music many nights of the week. A great seisiún makes people happy and fills their minds and hearts with wonderful music for some time. This is a great way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and beyond.
