with Buddy the Betta

It finally arrived, my very own upgraded home, complete with a filter, a light, a brand new silk plant, pretty gravel…everything a betta as particular as myself could possibly ask for! While not exactly a birthday present (I spied my Human hiding it under the Christmas tree a few months back), I had the pleasure of moving in just a couple weeks ago after my “one-year-in-the-bowl” festivities. I have to admit, I was a little apprehensive once I saw the setup; nothing like my tiny travel bowl, which was perfect for joining my Human and her family at the dining room table for dinner or on the coffee table for prime television viewing. No, this one-gallon estate is much better suited for its stationary spot on the kitchen counter – although I hear it can be unplugged and
relocated easily enough, you know, in case there happens to be anything good on Animal Planet. And my plant, I can’t say enough about its lengthy silk leaves, which create the perfect spot to curl up on and nap at any time of the day or night. No more frayed fins for this betta! This plant is smooth sailing, allowing me to flit to and fro and wedge myself in between its fronds without doing any further damage to my lovely physique. These days, the Human tends to feed me twice a day, once before she leaves for work in the morning and again when she returns home in the evening – just a few flakes each time (I do have to maintain my figure after all). I am having a bit of trouble navigating around the filter though, as it tends to blow my precious meal clear across the tank just as I have it within my grasp. What a workout!
I suppose that explains why I’ve been napping quite a bit more lately, either on my favorite leaf or wedged in the corner of my tank, face pressed against the glass, floating above the gravel. Plus, this new light is great for exploring when I’m home alone, doing my daily laps and combing the bottom for any rogue flakes that may have escaped – exhausting stuff. When the Human says “lights out,” she means it. Bedtime for Buddy! I look forward to spending the next chapter of my life in this beautiful new environment. Thanks to those readers who continue to check in on my livelihood and compliment my columns. I’ve even been told a book deal should be forthcoming! JOINING THE CLASS - On March 2nd, Councilman Kevin LaValle visited Mrs. Evans’ 5th grade class at Tecumseh Elementary School in Farmingville. He was there to participate in the annual “Leaders are Readers Day,” a program designed to instill leadership in students through the principles of the “7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” written by Stephen Covey. Councilman LaValle spoke with the children about what it is like to serve on the Town Board and to work for the residents of the community. He also read the book “Duck for President,” by Doreen Cronin.

Jeans for Teens
The Anchor Club and The Sayville Flashes Leadership Club along with their advisers, Ms. RizzoShore, Mrs. WittmanCahill, and Mrs. O’Hoppe, have once again joined forces to participate in the “Teens for Jeans Drive” sponsored by Aeropostale and DoSomething.Org! When the members of both clubs learned that about one in three people experiencing homelessness is under age 18 and one item requested the most
is a pair of blue jeans, they were compelled to help. Fortunately, they didn’t have to do it alone. This year, the high school clubs received extra assistance thanks to a special collaboration with the Lincoln Avenue PTA and student body who graciously offered to contribute by running their own collection. By the end of the collection period, the dropoff boxes were overflowing. The club members and
advisors carefully counted the jeans and bundled them in piles of ten in preparation for the pickup and delivery to local area shelters. It was a great effort by the High School clubs and Lincoln Avenue. Their combined contribution came to a final total of 480 pairs of jeans in all different styles and sizes. Congratulations to all who participated. The clubs can’t wait to collect again next year!
Series to Start St. Lawrence the Martyr R.C. Church, located at corner of Main Street and Handsome Avenue in Sayville, will conduct a series called Catholics Returning Home on six consecutive Monday
evenings at 7:30 p.m. in the Church, beginning April 4th. These sessions are for Catholics who have left the active practice of their faith and who are seeking answers to questions about

Students in John Hellmuth’s Auto Body Repair and Refinishing Program at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Islip Career Center sometimes do “out of the box” projects. The special education career students typically dismantle damaged cars, straighten metal parts and car frames, hammer out dents, grind, sand, and prepare cars for the paint shop. They also learn how to do oxyacetylene welding. Having the ability to weld and knowing the proper techniques afford students the opportunity to use the skill on things other than cars. Hellmuth likes to offer his students different projects to work on to expand their practical skills and career opportunities. Recently students used their welding fabrication skills to restore and rebuild a BBQ Smoker for Michael Heerbrandt a volunteer firefighter with the West Sayville Fire Department. Heerbrandt said, “I
thought I could fabricate a smoker by myself. I started with a brand new 275 gallon oil tank.” He painted it but the paint began peeling off. He realized he didn’t have the tools and equipment he needed to build the smoker correctly. “When things started to go wrong, I remembered a fellow firefighter John Hellmuth was a teacher at ESBOCES doing auto repair. I asked him if his students ever worked on “out of the box” projects; anything not related to cars.” Hellmuth responded with, “We are up for almost anything.” Several items needed to be repaired, rebuilt, and restored on the smoker. The students took apart the trailer, put it back together again so it sat straight, rewired the lights on the back trailer, took the tank off and welded it back on. Sanded and repainted the tank, cut and welded a steel plate to fit between the food and the fire, and
welded shelves onto the smoker for the food. “They did a great job. I’m very thankful for all their hard work. I know that the smoker is safe and sturdy,” Heerbrandt said. A new smoker can cost upwards of $8,000. “This one is as good or better and it’s a great conversation piece,” he said. Heerbrandt paid for all the parts and supplies and thanked the students with lunch, cooked using the newly refurbished smoker. It consisted of pulled pork, chicken and several side dishes. This “out of the box” project was beneficial to the students who are learning skills for postschool employment. “Being able to take a skill and apply it means they can demonstrate knowledge and competency; doing this project for firefighters made the experience even more rewarding,” said Hellmuth.

READERS ARE LEADERS DAY - Legislator Bill Lindsay recently attended “Readers are Leaders Day” at Tecumseh Elementary School where he read Woodrow the White House Mouse to Ms. Labella’s fourth grade class. Afterwards students began asking various questions about local government and politics. Legislator Leslie Kennedy found herself back at school this Wednesday. She had the distinct privilege of reading to Mrs. Troise’s 3rd grade class at Tecumseh Elementary School as part of “Readers are Leaders Day.” In an effort to promote
literacy and in conjunction with an initiative to instill leadership, Leslie read A Fine Fine School to the class. Currently serving on the Education and Information Technology Committee, Leslie is keenly interested in educating the future of Suffolk County
and the future of this nation. Legislator Kennedy was ecstatic to be able to get out of the office and spend some time with this third grade class, imparting some of her knowledge to these young students.
Better Tomorrow
On the last weekend in February, thirteen Sayville members of the Model UN Club participated in the Fifth Annual Model UN Conference held at Hofstra University. Along with their High School Advisors LynnAnn Perlin and Sabine Loriston, the students attended the three-day event and met with other high school students from districts across Long Island as well as New York City schools. During the conference, they discussed global issues and developed possible resolutions to
some of the world’s most pressing issues. At the closing ceremonies, two Sayville students received awards for their hard work and extensive research. Sean Barry won Honorable Mention for his work representing China in the water scarcity crisis and Emily Sneddon won Outstanding Delegate for her work representing China in the World Bank. Pleased with all their students’ efforts, Advisors Perlin and Loriston expressed their special acknowledgements for
Sean’s and Emily’s hardwon awards. “We are very proud of them and all they’ve accomplished!”

has entertained students and families for years, but its real purpose has been to help the students develop a sense of confidence and to promote public speaking, thereby fulfilling the New York State Standards. This year was no different. The extravaganza opened with a musical number by composer Mike Wilson’s “Enjoy the Show” conducted by Cherry Avenue’s enthusiastic music teacher Kristi Woerner. The Third-grade performers showcased great musicality that delighted the audience. Getting down to the business of distributing awards, Hostess of Ceremonies Mrs. Geraldine Batterberry welcomed the nominees and guests to the ceremony with wit and warmth, recognized the special award recipients,* and enumerated all the reasons why these hardworking Third-graders were “Oscar worthy.” Mrs. Batterberry
also announced the categories of winning attributes, and along with “Academy” Assistants Mrs. Andria Flynn and Mrs. Karen Donnelly, congratulated the students whose successful efforts undoubtedly made them all stars. Every student was called up to receive a trophy and to give an acceptance speech that included expressions of “surprise for earning the award” and “thanks” to mom and dad and assorted family members and their fellow students who nominated them. One particular recipient stated that he had been looking forward to winning an Oscar “since first grade,” but all showed great poise and modesty as they accepted their awards. By the end of the ceremony, each student clutched a golden statuette for a successful achievement while all parents beamed with pride.
WOMEN’S HISTORY - Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, along with the entire Islip Town Board, recently honored four outstanding women in recognition of National Women’s History Month. These women have made a remarkable difference in the community and Town of Islip. They were each presented with an award at the March 8th Town Board Meeting. Among those honored were Deborah Kirnon, Kay Porter, Nancy Manfredonia and Barbara Ann Stenberg. LuAnn Palazzo was also recognized as the contributing artist for the celebration. Her artwork will be displayed in the Town Board Room at Islip Town Hall for all to see throughout the month.

For their Oscar-winning performances in the classroom, Cherry Avenue Third-grade students in Sayville School District were recognized at the Annual Oscar Awards by their thrilled teachers and adoring public - families. managing their private lives via the device. What suffers could be the so-called “college experience,” the experts warn us. You may be missing out on enjoying your time on a real, physical campus while you tend to a virtual world. “Cell phones have a great potential for help and for harm. Sadly, the harmful effects are more prevalent than the helpful ones for today’s students, and they are cheating themselves out of the true college experience,” Brooks added. One professor told us an anecdote of another professor who gives his students allotted breaks for their cell phone use. This would be analogous to the cigarette breaks given in the 1970s and prior. The students have trouble keeping focus if they can’t get a fix. Although quality use of the smart phone is more important than using it for fun. “What the students are reading on their phones isn’t all unimportant content,” said Steven Rothberg, president of College Recruiter, a job placement site. “With well over 90 percent using smart phones and most reading e-mails on their smart phones, students are often using their
phones to search for an internship or entry-level job. That type of reading will require more focus on their phones and less on their surroundings than if they were looking at videos of cute kittens.” We decided to focus on the work of Dr. Ofir Turel, professor of information systems and decision sciences at Cal State Fullerton, for this issue. “Smart phones are like refrigerators full of surprising foods; it is very tempting for many users to get sucked into checking and updating content,” Dr. Turel told us. “Taken together, the strong psychological rewards people receive from using applications on their cell phones, the inconvenience they feel when they do not use them, and the time it takes to do all this are reasonable possible explanations for the need to spend break time, while walking through university corridors, on the cell phone.” You have to ask yourself, is what you’re doing on social media really all that important? “The concept of a “friend” has changed, from having 10-30 friends when I grew up to having hundreds or thousands of “friends” on

In just the past couple of years, especially, it seems, at commuter colleges, the majority of students in campus corridors seem to be staring down at their smart phones. “In the classroom, cell phones are a major distraction,” said Stoney Brooks, a professor of Computer Information Systems at Middle Tennessee State University. “Many students do not think that multitasking – checking Facebook, texting, watching a harmless YouTube video, etc. – is harmful to their learning. This is not true. Humans cannot multitask – we rapidly task-switch. And whenever we switch tasks, our brains have to refocus our processing to the new task, and we forget some of the information that we had for the first task. There are studies that show that, for example, social media use in the classroom is associated with increased stress and lower classroom performance.” Obviously, this can be a safety concern, too, with no one actually looking up and taking in the action happening around them. But also it can be a quality-of-life concern, as students may not feel they can escape their day-to-day worries while on campus, instead

Ultimately, allowing the use of such sites in class assumes a certain level of maturity – students need to refrain from abusing such systems, and use these “re-charging” rights wisely.” So what can be done about this problem, if anything? “First, we need to increase awareness among students regarding potential
problems associated with excessive and sometimes addictive use of some technologies,” Turel said. Some universities already include a module on Internet/video gaming risks for incoming freshmen students, he noted, so adding a seminar on appropriate smart phone use would be easy. “Many causes of dropping out have to do with spending too much time on non-productive Internet activities such as playing video games,” he said. “Teachers can explain the risks to students and discuss their cell phone and social media use policies in class.” Turel added, “Cell phones, Facebook and other technologies are like food – we need them and we do not want to avoid them. When consumed at healthy levels, for the
right purpose and properly (for example, around the table and not while driving) they are very useful. However, over- and improper consumption can lead to adverse consequences. We need to be better aware of these risks and teach ourselves to develop the right balance of both food consumption and technology use.” Brooks concluded, “The addiction that students have to their mobile devices has fundamentally changed the nature of interpersonal relationships and communication. The technology has allowed us to communicate and connect easier and more rapidly, but has caused even more distance between people.”
