What Gifts Do You Bring to the World? “Kindness is a gift everyone can afford to give.” - Unknown The Wright brothers gave us the gift of flight. Steve Jobs gave us the gift of portable, digitally downloadable music. Alexander Fleming gave us the lifesaving gift of penicillin and the birth of antibiotics to fight infections. Next to some of these historical bigwigs, it can be easy to downplay the gifts that we each offer to the world as inconsequential. While it is true that some of us provide gifts that impact millions, or even billions, of people around the world on a massive scale, many of us are here to share our gifts through what is commonly known as the ripple effect. The ripple effect is defined as “every action that you make affects other people and the planet.” Each of us is consistently generating ripples every day. We are powerful creators. It may not hit the entire world at once like the explosion of the iPhone. Your gifts may instead impact people more subtly and slowly, and therefore you are

prone to underestimate your power to impact others. The school teacher who leaves an indelible imprint on a particular student or group of students; the person who volunteers their time and attention to a worthy cause that changes the course of someone’s life; a genuine compliment spoken to someone who needs it at just the right time; the painting or sculpture you create that lands in someone’s home and makes them smile or feel inspired every time they look at it... there are so many things we each do and say that are impacting people around us in ways we cannot fully grasp. A co-worker of mine whom I like and respect very much, was telling me that she doesn’t know how I manage to write a weekly column, because she does not feel it is within her capacity to do so. I promptly replied to her, “You have the gift of kindness. You are one of the kindest people I have ever known, and that is your special gift.” She stared at me in stunned silence, as though she had not

been told that before. You may have the gift of kindness and generosity, or the gift of artistic expression. Perhaps your gift is being able to build things or put anything together. Maybe you have the gift of humor. You always manage to brighten people’s day with a well placed joke or funny story, and your comedic timing is impeccable. You may be gifted in the kitchen, whipping up the most delicious meals that bring people together. I have a dear friend whom I affectionately call, “The Child Whisperer.” Children are always calm and happy in his presence and they just love his energy; animals too. It’s human nature to continuously tally up our shortcomings, but have you ever taken stock of the gifts that you bring to the world? And when was the last time you really harnessed their power to improve your life and the lives of those around you? You don’t need permission to express your gifts to the world. The right question could be as simple as, “How can I make someone else’s life better today?”

David Arquette on His Famous Family and Our Criminal Justice System By Allison Kugel

The Arquette family are a band of actors, artists, societal provocateurs and activists. With the image that David Arquette has crafted for himself as the family’s resident goofball, his newest film, a documentary titled, Survivor’s Guide to Prison, is a departure. It champions a cause close to David’s heart and gives a window into another side of the actor as concerned citizen and defender of personal freedom. Survivor’s Guide to Prison is currently streaming on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Vudu, Google Play and YouTube.

that is outdated; it doesn’t work anymore. The punishment model has been proven not to be successful and it’s time for change. Matthew put a really amazing documentary together. My wife, Christina Arquette, and I watched an early cut and we both came on board as producers. We worked with Matthew and got a bunch of great people involved. Susan Sarandon is a producer on it, Gina Belafonte, Jesse Williams; just some really great people who have done a lot of great work to help change the prison system.

This documentary film is an eye opening, unsettling and informative look inside America’s criminal justice system and the prison industrial complex; an industry that has continued to grow exponentially with no signs of slowing down. You’ll be introduced to the players politicians, law enforcement officers, our judicial system and the prisonfor-profit industry. You’ll gain a clearer picture of the inner workings of mass incarceration in the United States of America. In addition, David and I discuss his famous family and how they have enriched his life and furthered his purpose.

Allison Kugel: So many people came on board for this film. Adrian Grenier is also a producer on the film. Danny Trejo, Ice T, Busta Rhymes, Danny Glover, Deepak Chopra, your sister Patricia Arquette, and on and on...

Allison Kugel: What led you to become involved as a producer on the documentary, Survivor’s Guide to Prison?

Allison Kugel: Had Survivor’s Guide to Prison been made in the mid-1990s during the time of the OJ Simpson murder trial and subsequent verdict, how do you think the events of that day would have impacted the messaging and direction of this documentary? David Arquette: That was a flashpoint in our history, with the black community feeling targeted and feeling not heard, and they galvanized. There were many incidents during that time that were tragic. For example, when a young black woman was killed by a Korean business owner… there were a lot of issues during that time period that came up. The interesting thing is that this whole prison industrial complex has grown since then, and has become a profit stream for a lot of people. We still live in a country, and in a world, that has racial injustice all around us. It’s time to speak up and be honest about it, provide change and put money into communities that

Allison Kugel: What do you hope the public gains from watching this film? David Arquette: It’s a little tonguein-cheek, the title, Survivor’s Guide to Prison. We say that, because we see people who have survived the prison system as just that, survivors. Just calling people “prisoners” or “inmates” and giving them numbers, it’s such a way of de-humanizing them. So, the idea of this film is to bring some compassion back into the discussion. That’s what we’re trying to do with the stories we highlight in the film about two men who were wrongly accused and went away for decades (Bruce Lisker and Reggie Cole). It totally transformed their lives and changed them on such a deeply painful, human level. Allison Kugel: Why is Hollywood so liberal and so fiercely against the conservative agenda? David Arquette: As artists, part of our job is to look around, see what’s going on, and to feel emotionally connected to injustice and what’s going on in the world. There are a lot of people in Hollywood who are very religious, very straight-laced, and not your typical Hollywood kind of liberal. They are more conservative, but they are good people. I think what it really comes down to is that we want good people to thrive. Allison Kugel: What do you foresee the Arquette family legacy being in decades to come? David Arquette: Ultimately, we’re performers; we’re entertainers. That’s what our past, and the history of our family is about. It’s been about entertaining people. It’s really what I’m passionate about. I like acting. I like making people laugh. I like the idea of somebody having a rough day at work and being able to zone out and watch something. On that note, this isn’t the film that does that (laughs). Allison Kugel: (Laughs) No. It’s an engaging film, it really pulls you in and it’s a must-see. But it’s not an easy watch. Parts of it are actually heartbreaking to watch. David Arquette: This film is about asking some important questions. That is another side of entertainment, shining light on darkness. Allison Kugel: Your grandfather was a comedian, your parents were actors, your siblings are actors. Is

that something you’re hoping will continue with your own children?

David Arquette: My daughter Coco (Arquette’s thirteen year old daughter with Courteney Cox) loves singing and performing. She’s really good at it, and she’s got a great head on her shoulders about it. We’ve kept everything unprofessional, like school plays and that sort of thing. We just want to allow her the time to grow up. Growing up in LA is already kind of slanted, and not completely grounded in reality. We want to allow her to have a childhood and not have to have the pressures of auditioning.

Allison Kugel: What is your favorite form of artistic expression these days?

Allison Kugel: What do you think is the right age developmentally and emotionally for your daughter, Coco, or any child, to go through the process of auditioning for acting roles? David Arquette: Totally an individual thing. If she was really pushing us, like, “Listen, mom, dad, I want to do this; I want to audition,” then I think there’s something to that... a kid who’s so passionate about that being their life’s goal. But she’s been cool about taking it at a slower pace. Allison Kugel: Out of all the Arquette siblings, who would you say is the most courageous, and why? David Arquette: My whole family, I just love and respect them all. Rosanna is doing so much to stand up to all of the horrors of what’s happening in Hollywood, and in businesses in general. She’s really behind the #MeToo movement, and I’m really proud of her for that. She also supports tons of different charities. Patricia is incredible. She’s got GiveLove.org, that helps places like Haiti with their sanitation system, and helps to provide clean water. Alexis was amazing; the way Alexis stood up for who she was. She was out and transgender before it was

David Arquette: I love painting. I took a Bob Ross instructional course, so I can teach people how to paint in the Bob Ross, wet on wet technique. Allison Kugel: Bob Ross, the Happy Trees guy? David Arquette: Yeah. I went to take a three-week course, where I learned how to teach his happy trees [painting] method. I work with an organization called Art of Elysium. We’re gonna go to hospitals and teach kids how to paint some happy trees. Painting is such a great stress reliever and calms my soul. But I love acting. When I get to work with really talented actors and directors, writers and producers, and dive into that and show what I’ve learned over my twenty-nine years of acting, I really love it. And when those things come together, and you get to work with great projects it really is a gift. David Arquette: I was first aware of the project because I’m friends with Matthew Cooke, who is an amazing Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker, who worked on the documentaries Deliver Us From Evil and How to Make Money Selling Drugs. With Survivor’s Guide to Prison, Matthew highlights the prison system, how corrupt it is, and how it’s prison-for-profit. It’s a model

David Arquette: Danny Trejo, specifically, was so generous. He’s had family members who were directly affected by it, recently getting out of prison after being in for a crime they didn’t commit. He had also been in prison way back, a long time ago, when it was a different era, but it’s close to him. Danny sees what it does to communities. One of the things that’s so horrible about this current [Criminal Justice] system is that it takes parents away. The United States locks up more women than any other country in the world. You see the dangers of dismantling the family structure. The War on Drugs, and all these different initiatives to incarcerate people, have proven to be destructive to our society.

Students at Sachem High Schools North and East interested in careers in marketing gained valuable industry insight through hands-on experience as part of a recent project in William Ward’s College Marketing class. The project challenged students to design their own unique breakfast

cereal and create a marketing plan to accompany their product. As part of the marketing plan, students needed to identify their target market, develop product ideas and collaborate with their group members to choose a cereal name, packaging, distribution outlets and price. The

Her portraits include “Pope Francis in America,” Derek Jeter, John Heisman, and the “George Washington at Valley Forge” painting, which will also be unveiled. She also paints commissions on request. The most famous commission that Thompson received was from President Ronald Reagan for the official poster design of the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial Statue in Washington, D.C. The unveiling of the PGA painting will be on Friday, March 22, 2019 at the Connetquot Public Library, 760 Ocean Ave., Bohemia, New York, 11716 at 6 P.M. Elaine Faith Thompson, a Long Island native, is back at the Bethpage Black Course. The PGA of America has chosen her to paint a poster commemorating the 2019 PGA Championship at Bethpage Black. The championship will be contested May 16-19, 2019 at Bethpage State Park, in Farmingdale, New York. The PGA Shops will be open to the general public from May 10th to May 12th from 9am to 6 pm. During PGA Week, the PGA Shops will be open for ticketed spectators May 13th to May 19th. The poster is also available at the Bethpage Pro Shop at Bethpage State Park, which is now open everyday. Given her roots, Thompson has worked on many paintings for USGA championships on Long Island and the New York Metropolitan area. Birthday Wishes is an organization whose mission is to provide birthday parties to children experiencing homelessness. They improve and empower the lives of homeless children and their families by providing joy, play and hope through the magic of a birthday party.

Birthday Wishes of Long Island began having parties in only one shelter. Today they work with 80 shelters/transitional housing programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties, and each month they give more than 120 children a birthday celebration!

PGA Championship Poster PGA commissioned her to do the painting. She spent the next day photographing the magnificent golf course. Simultaneously, she located a photo of her 2009 Bethpage poster model, Jamie Mas, Thompson’s own grandson. In 2009 he was a little caddy boy dressed in the clothing style of the original Bethpage logo. During the 2009 photo shoot, Jamie took it on his own to strike another pose that was never used. In that other photo, he was looking for the ball he had just hit. It looked like the boy was saluting. He is now 21 years old, serving his country in a deployment in the United States Marines. On Thanksgiving 2018, Thompson had the opportunity to be with him before he was deployed. Thompson is also well known for her New York and Long Island scenic works, including: lighthouses; The Big Duck; Theodore Roosevelt’s home at Sagamore Hill; Fire Island; Riverhead Raceway and the Peconic River; Aqueduct and Roosevelt Raceways; Smithtown Bull; Downtown Sayville and

Schoolhouse; Mount Sinai Garden; Lady Golfer at Timber Point Timber; and the Statue of Liberty. Her portraits include “Pope Francis in America,” Derek Jeter, John Heisman, and the “George Washington at Valley Forge” painting, which will also be unveiled. She also paints commissions on request. The most famous commission that Thompson received was from President Ronald Reagan for the official poster design of the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial Statue in Washington, D.C. The unveiling of the PGA painting will be on Friday, March 22, 2019 at the Connetquot Public Library, 760 Ocean Ave., Bohemia, New York, 11716 at 6 P.M. An artist reception will be from 5 PM to 8 PM and refreshments will be served. The public is invited. The snow date is on Thursday, April 11, 2019, only if the library is closed on March 22. A faceoff between the top 20 Sachem spellers took place during the annual fifth-grade districtwide spelling bee on Feb. 6 at Grundy Avenue Elementary School. For more than 20 years the Sachem Central School District has showcased the top two spellers from each building at the districtwide event. As champions on the

building level representing their respective elementary schools, the 20 word wizards met for a chance to be named the top speller. The Science of Natural Disasters Towering waves, structure-shaking winds and ground-crumbling earthquakes were all topics of discussions in Caitlin Thompson’s Natural Disasters class at Sachem High School East, a science elective for students in 10th, 11th and 12th grades. As part of the course, students learned about natural disasters that occur

around the world, such as earthquakes, volcanos, wild fires, tornados, blizzards, floods and plagues. Students examined numerous causes of these disasters using knowledge from several specific areas of science, including meteorology, geology and Earth science. During a recent activity examining the power of hurricane-force winds,

students were tasked to construct a miniature hurricane-proof building with the ability to withstand extreme winds. Using tape, pipe cleaners, string and tongue depressors, students assembled buildings capable of holding the load of a tennis ball while also withstanding high winds simulated by a fan.

Students Go “Into Orbit” Students from Bayport’s Academy Street Elementary School were recently treated to a special surprise held in the school’s cafeteria, as fourth-grade student Darby Kaler showcased her proficiency in engineering amongst her classmates and a number of staff members. Darby, who is a part of the FIRST Lego League team alongside a number of other district students, recently took part in a competition

held at Huntington High School, competing against 190 other teams. Due to the successes of the “Brainstormers” team, they were able to secure a spot amongst the top 40 competitors, and will progress onto the next level of competition set to take place in March. During the presentation held in the school’s cafeteria, Darby, along with her parents/team coaches Eileen

and Bob Kaler, showcased their bots to the attendees and presented background information that goes along with this year’s spaceoriented theme of “Into Orbit.” Darby’s fourth-grade teacher Kimberly Rall was able to attend the team’s competition at Huntington High School, and reported that all involved did a phenomenal job presenting.
