Are you all enjoying your one extra hour of daylight? Feels more springy already, doesn’t it? Me, I’ve always looked to St. Patrick’s Day as the transitional date when winter finally – and hopefully thoroughly – gives way to spring. After that, it’s only a matter of time ‘til we’re dying Easter eggs, breaking out the pastels and looking to plant our gardens. After journeying to Ireland this past summer, it was fascinating to see how little the homeland pays attention to this
“holiday.” It is a uniquely American celebration of… well, in theory, Irish pride. In reality… let’s just say, Irish heritage seems to be optional in the grand parade of drunkenness and debauchery that descends upon the entire month of March here in New York. But back to the dawn of spring and sunshine and butterflies and flowers… there’s something very exciting about this rebirth of Mother Nature, isn’t there? The time for hibernation is over. Get out the cleaning supplies, put away any lingering remnants of winter, and start redecorating for this
new season of rebirth. So, take solace. It’s been one long, tedious winter, to be sure. But spring is ready to be sprung upon us all. Open the windows, let the light in, stop and smell the flowers – once they’ve begun to bloom, of course. Pretty soon, the snowcovered landscape will be a distant memory. We’ve all claimed we’re going to enjoy this upcoming spring and summer that much more after the last several months of bone-chilling cold. So let’s follow through on that, shall we? No time like the present to begin anew.

Trees Rock This past November, Sayville’s Lincoln Avenue Fourth-graders in Ms. Melinda Moran’s class entered the National Scotties Trees Rock Video Contest with a one-to-three minute video presentation in which the students explained how trees benefit schools, neighborhoods, and communities. Creating the star of their video, Tree-Yonce, the students fielded questions and gained insights about how trees help the planet. “The ability to integrate movie making,
with scriptwriting skills, performing and learning about science in a fun creative way,” Melinda Moran remarked, “allowed the students to take responsibility for their learning with only a small amount of guidance from me.” Although the finalists were recently announced, the Lincoln Avenue students were proud that they placed in the top 50 of the national contest on their first try. Making The Most Of Each Season
As the weather gets warmer, it is easy to let seasonal moments pass us by. For instance, the glory associated with St. John the Baptist’s High School Rowing is heightened going into spring season. Getting on the water is a long-awaited break from the monotony of winter training. Thankfully, our team is bigger and better than ever. With a handful of standouts, backed up by a strong base of rowers, SJB is certainly in the hunt for a State Championship win this year. Although we have not been the most competitive team in recent years, a newfound drive and
revamped training staff seem to be the key to a winning season. For those who don’t know, Rowing is an historic sport that tests both the mind and the body. As a four year Varsity rower, I know as well as any of my teammates just how dedicated one has to be to excel in this sport. Although I am far from elite, Rowing is becoming increasingly competitive. With an abundance of college scholarship money available for top rowers, the race for supremacy is grueling. Long workouts on the rowing machine give rowers the edge that they crave when spring season rolls around.
It is no secret that the basis for a winning team is proper training during the winter. For rowers, this season functions as the offseason. An old adage states that “races are won in the winter.” Essentially, the better prepared group will come out on top. There is no feeling comparable to passing another boat. In that moment, it becomes evident that the faster team simply wants it more. Without preparation, that win could not be possible. As we barrel into Spring, don’t let moments like this pass you by. Make the most out of the season, and life as a whole.

To help residents quit smoking, the Town of Brookhaven will conduct a six-week smoking cessation program starting Tuesday, April 1st and continuing every Tuesday through May 20th. Meetings will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Youth Bureau conference room on the second floor
Congratulations go to Maggie Mongiello, a fourth-grader at Cherry Avenue Elementary School in Sayville, who was one in fifty nationwide to receive a perfect score in the first of three meets for this year’s WordMasters Challenge™ - a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 150,000 students annually. Maggie earned the perfect score of 20 while competing in the difficult Blue Division of the WordMasters Challenge™. Credit goes also to Maggie’s coach at Cherry Avenue, Mrs. Elizabeth Denton, who is one of five teachers at the three elementary schools who prepare the students afterschool as WordMasters Challenge™ Team Leaders. 4th Town Board Meeting, that honored two outstanding activists in the Sayville area. For 100 years the Sayville Village Improvement Society has worked to make the Sayville community an attractive area for residents, businesses, and tourists. Kay Porter and Sheila Rettaliata, who are currently leading the organization, were presented with a Town proclamation recognizing the group’s efforts.

This year the achievement awards will be presented to students in grades 9
through 12 who have made significant contributions to the community or who have excelled in a specific academic area. The research conducted will result in a greater understanding of astronomy and provide students, professors and the community at large with a new resource,” said New York State Senator and Chairman of the New York State Select Committee on Higher Education Kenneth P. LaValle. “A quality and affordable community college system is vital to the continuing health of our county and today’s grand opening is another example of how dedicated the leadership of Suffolk County Community College is to fulfilling that goal. This new addition will expand educational opportunities for our county’s young students to allow them to reach their full potential,” stated Senator John Flanagan, Chairman of the New York State Senate Committee on Education. “Congratulations to everyone involved for turning this vision into reality.” “The new observatory at Suffolk County Community College’s Ammerman Campus showcases the institution’s groundbreaking teaching initiatives and highlights the school’s dedication to science and technology,” said Legislator Sarah Anker. “Suffolk County Community College remains at the forefront of academic research, and as Chair of the Suffolk County Legislature’s Education Committee, I continue to support our college’s educational excellence.” “I am thrilled that our community college has a new Observatory that will be a great research tool for the students majoring in physics/ astronomy. Considering that the only other educational institution that has one in Suffolk County is Stony Book University, this is a very impressive addition for the college,” said Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta of Fort Salonga. “This
is an exciting moment for our community college and our community overall,” Legislator Trotta added. “As a Suffolk County Community College alumnus, I am proud to see the extraordinary improvements Dr. McKay and his staff have made to all of our campuses. I believe that adding an observatory to our Selden campus will not only draw our residents to the college, but will also serve as an attraction for visitors to enjoy, “said Suffolk County Legislator William J. Lindsay III. The observatory’s 10-inch Meade RCX400 RitcheyChretien telescope has a resolving power of 0.45 arc seconds, which is equivalent to being able to see a dime a little more than five miles away, and is housed under a 20 ½ foot rotating dome atop the Smithtown Sciences Building and equipped with networked computer controls allowing partial operation from remote locations. Full networking and remote operation are planned in the near future. The instrument can also be operated via electronic hand controls and is equipped with software that accesses a catalog of coordinates for 145,000 celestial objects that make viewing and moving from one object to another easier. The telescope’s primary mirror also has ultra-high transmission coatings to help increase light transmission by 20 percent, making objects brighter, and is mounted to a 12 foot-tall cylindrical metal pier that is filled with sand to dampen vibrations. There is an additional vibration dampening system on top of the pier that was designed and installed by Suffolk County Community College Science Department faculty, consisting of metal plates with rubber spacers. Astronomers using the new telescope can also record what they are seeing through the college’s CCD Camera equipped with filters that meet astronomical research standards. The college is working to open the Observatory, by appointment, to small groups from the public on Friday nights later this spring. College President McKay said an announcement will be made to the media, via the college’s social media channels and on its web site when the program’s details are established.

The stars are shining a bit brighter on the Suffolk County Community College Ammerman Campus with the opening of the college’s new state-of-theart observatory where star gazers can peer into the sky and look more than a billion years back in time. Suffolk County Community College now has one of only four observatories in our county − Stony Brook University, Custer in Southold, the Vanderbilt Museum and Montauk are the other four – and Suffolk Community’s is among the largest. In astronomy, first light is the first use of a telescope (or, in general, a new instrument) to take an astronomical image after it has been constructed. This is often not the first viewing using the telescope; optical tests have been performed to adjust the components. Despite this, a first light is always a moment of tremendous excitement, both for those who design and build the telescope and for the astronomical community at large. “This is a fantastic new addition to our College,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay, “that will provide research opportunities for faculty and astronomy majors, as well as enhance our college’s reputation in the scientific community while educating the public about astronomy through public outreach.” “The College’s new observatory offers our students and faculty the opportunity to conduct research and share information with other students and scientists throughout the world,” said Suffolk County Community College Board of Trustees Chairwoman Dafny J. Irizzary, adding, “it will also serve as one more college resource available to the community at large.” “The faculty is thrilled to have the observatory as a permanent house for our astronomical research equipment and for use by faculty and our astronomy majors. Not only does it allow us to investigate scientific questions, it provides an opportunity to share the excitement of looking out into the universe with the people of Suffolk County,” said Professor Thomas Breeden, Chairman of the Physical Sciences Department.

Dramatic Dioramas
In an amazing display of inspired dioramas, created by the Secondgrade students at Sunrise Drive, there were foxes and snakes, butterflies and bats, chipmunks and raccoons, turtles and deer, and don’t forget bears, all placed appropriately in
winter scenes. Last year, when the Sunrise Drive Secondgrade classes followed the English Language Arts Standards by reading informational texts, in alignment with Common Core, each student was required
to research nonfiction content and write a book, which was later bound and “published.” The classes also expanded on the curriculum with an additional craft - dioramas - which allowed the students to conceptualize their topics in 3D.
This year, three of the four classes (Carpenter, Franze-Heuer, Krivosta) chose winter themes for their dioramas and focused on aspects of migration, adaptation, and hibernation - in some classrooms, the students collaborated on a midsize cave with a hibernating bear inside - while one class (Philp) allowed for personal preferences, but all diorama projects had to satisfy the requirement of nonfiction research. New this year was the Haiku Poetry Project that combined student
compositions with beautiful, winter birch tree paintings, created by the students during their art classes with Art Teacher Mrs. Jeanette Ainslie. The results were astounding! Not only did the Second graders exhibit great enthusiasm and imagination in creating their dioramas and their haikus, they were proud to show their parents all the work during Go-To-School Night. “The parents were genuinely surprised and pleased when they saw the finished books the children
created.” Mrs. Claudia Carpenter observed. “ Since all of the research and writing was done in school ,it was an exciting night for the students since they were able to finally share their hard work with their families. Many parents also commented on the fact that the students were able to type and insert photos in their books.” The students in Mrs. Franze-Heuer’s class summarized their enjoyment of the projects, saying it was “learning in a fun way!”
