Families who participate in The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program open their hearts and homes to New York City children in the summer. “Sharing your home and the surrounding community with a Fresh Air youngster can be the beginning of a worthwhile and meaningful experience – for both the child and your family,” says Jenny Morgenthau, Executive Director of The Fresh Air Fund. “This year, we are looking for new host families in the Western Suffolk area to celebrate our 139th summer and give children a chance to run barefoot through the grass or gaze at the starfilled skies.” Volunteers simply want to share what they have with city children and introduce them to the joys of suburban or country

The children can just play in the backyard and enjoy just being kids,” says Donna, a Fresh Air host. Families find hosting so rewarding that more than 65 percent of all Fresh Air children are invited to visit the same host families year after year. First-time Fresh Air visitors are six to 12 years old and all it takes is the willingness to welcome a New York City child to your community. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit organization, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million inner-city children since 1877. 500. It’s a pretty big number. Nearly ten years’ worth of weekly columns under the moniker “In Step,” a title suggested by my dear friend, co-worker and “agent” of sorts, since passed, Peter Schleifer. It was meant to be a take off on my - at that point - 13 years of dancing and the idea that, somehow, I could find a way to engage our weekly readership with my random ramblings and musings on life. It sounded like a pretty tall order then, and remains so, but having had a passion for writing since the days of poetry units and short story exercises in elementary school, I felt I was up for the challenge. To be given the opportunity to write for a living, to do something I loved and reach an audience… well, that’s pretty special any way you slice it.

jlynn@theneighbornewspapers.com www.facebook.com/instepwithjamie Suddenly, all those years of working on the high school newspaper, of fine tuning profiles and features in college, and even piecing together my 50-page Honors thesis, came rushing back. The topics may have been varied, the styles quite diverse, but at the root of it all was that feeling that this was something I could do. Sure, there have been weeks when coming up with an original idea, any idea, was somewhat tedious. Scanning through the archive, there have been plenty of recycled concepts, even a few exact reruns of “classics.” (Classics? Really? Who do you think you are, Ed Lowe?) But through it all, that same passion has always remained. This is why I studied journalism. This was the reason for my career choice, in spite of all those detractors who warned that

it was impossible to make a living in this field. Ultimately, though, it was exactly that “reality” that served as added inspiration for me to go after my dreams. After all, who’s to say what’s profitable, what’s a guarantee for success? And what is success, if you’re not doing something you love? Ten years. 500 columns. Such a long time; such a lofty milestone. So much has changed since July of 2005, much of which has been reﬂected in those columns. They serve as a public diary of sorts, documenting the highs and lows, and a showcase for my efforts to somehow encapsulate them into words. Thank you to all those readers who have supported me along the way. Here’s to more memories and milestones!

L’Damian Washington, NFL wide receiver, experienced heartbreak many times throughout his efforts to become a professional athlete. L’Damian grew up with his three other brothers, LaCourtney, Tomarious and Tobias. His parents were Sonya Washington and William Myles. L’Damian was born in May of 1991, in Shreveport, Louisiana. When L’Damian was just 6 years old, his father was murdered. Ever since, his mother took care of all four children by herself. Mrs. Washington was the biggest sports fan L’Damian knew. Her smile was the first smile he saw after every game. At age 15, L’Damian’s best friend was murdered. During that same year, Mrs. Washington had been cheering for L’Damian at his high school basketball game when she had a stroke and passed away. He quotes, “I wish I was cherishing her today instead of just her memory.”

SAHIL KAPOOR • LINDENHURST L’Damian and his brothers were automatically forced into adulthood. They decided that they would remain living together. LaCourtney, the oldest brother, took charge as head of the household. He worked as much as he had to in order to put food on the table and keep their home. L’Damian started playing football at age 9. He was passionate about playing football. He had an outstanding football season in his senior year with a 3.5 GPA. L’Damian visited Louisiana Tech and Missouri colleges. He loved everything about the University of Missouri. The support from his brothers led L’Damian to signing with Missouri. In his 2012 season, which was Missouri’s first foray into the SEC, he contributed 443 yards with 2 touchdowns. L’Damian’s career-best performance was in his senior year, with 50 receptions, 893 receiving yards, and 10 touchdowns. All this time, L’Damian was devoted to keeping

HIGH SCHOOL his family together. Pro Day was his last chance to make an impression on scouts. That day, he recorded a 4.39 second 40-yard dash, which ranked among the 20 fastest receivers in the 2014 NFL draft. The Dallas Cowboys signed L’Damian as an undrafted free agent after the draft. He is currently a wide receiver on the Miami Dolphins. L’Damian sees his story as one of an unimaginable opportunity rather than heartbreak. With his determination and great attitude, L’Damian became an NFL player, but more importantly supported his family. The moral of his life story is not only to be thankful for what you have, but also to stay positive and keep moving forward. If L’Damian can overcome such difficult obstacles, you can too. He believes without these difficult experiences, he wouldn’t be the person he is today. L’Damian plans to keep working hard, learn new things, and stay true to himself.

On February 12th, the Rotary Club of The Moriches honored the members of the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws at its annual dinner at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck’s dining hall for their hard work in the raising of funds for the camp. The Squaws raised $165,000 for Camp PaQua-Tuck over the past year. The Squaws are a group of more than 30 women who meet once a month to discuss, plan, and execute

fundraisers for Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck, a resident summer camp for children and young adults with special needs, in Center Moriches. They are also responsible for hosting the annual Spooky Walk at the camp. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp designed for young people ages 6-21 with special needs. Its mission is to help children and young adults achieve equality, dignity, and maximum

There were Zombies galore at Connetquot High School in Bohemia on Saturday morning, January 11th. The colorfully decorated, yet slow-a-foot, creatures were there to blend in with children and adults of the Connetquot school district to have some fun, and help raise money for the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children (CFAC). Real Zombies, from NYZ Zombie Apocalypse (Deer Park), did their best to keep the walkers moving fast! Moms, dads, children, teachers, administrators and Connetquot Superintendent of Schools Mrs. Lynda G. Adams, came ready to walk the halls of Connetquot High school, ten times, to complete

the 5k goal. Participants did their best to evade the Zombies, and conquer a variety of obstacles and challenges. Each ‘nonzombie’ wore a belt with three flags. As they walked the halls the goal was to avoid zombies who would try to confront the humans, and take away one flag. When all three flags were ‘surrendered’ the humans would, by the end of the 5k run, be declared a Zombie for 2015! Refreshments, and encouragement, were provided by CFAC Board members, including Dr. Gail Cholden, Marcia Williams and Peter Leis. The CFAC provides financial grants to teachers and district schools to purchase equipment and supplies, support special assemblies and training

that directly benefits the students of the Connetquot school district. The CFAC has awarded well over $100,000 in support of school district efforts to enhance the educational opportunities for Connetquot’s children. Over 99% of the funds raised by the CFAC are returned directly for the benefit of the students of the Connetquot CSD. The CFAC is a not-forprofit charity and is not an organization of the Connetquot Central School District. Congratulations to all the participating ‘humans’ and Zombies that took part in a fun-laced event that will benefit the children of the Connetquot School District.

Continuing with its mission, the Bayport-Blue Point School District’s Wellness Committee has planned the third Annual BBP-Athlon for Saturday, April 25th. The event will kick off at 9 a.m. by the BBP high school auditorium and participants are asked to arrive by 8:45 a.m. and ride their bikes, as parking is limited. This family fun event is geared towards the elementary aged child and includes a 3-mile bike

ride followed by a ¾ mile jog. Hundreds of children, ranging from kindergarten through sixth grade have participated in this event alongside their friends and family over the past two years. To increase awareness of the event, district elementary students had the chance to participate in a T-shirt design contest earlier this winter. The winning artistic and motivational designs will be used on t-shirts for the event. This year’s winners

are Chris Dougherty of Blue Point Elementary and Thomas Steyert of Sylvan Avenue. T-shirts can be purchased at https://bbpathlon2015. itemorder.com/sale for only $7. Last year the BBP Wellness Committee used the money raised from the event toward a $350 donation to the BBPHS Fitness Center. Bayport-Blue Point School District’s kindergarten and firstgrade students marked the 100th day of school by conducting a variety of hands-on mathematical exercises and literacy projects centered on the number 100.

Many classes dressed to look like they were 100 years old and created necklaces out of 100 pieces of cereal, completed projects using 100 items in commendation of the day, counted to 100 using different multiples and, with the help of their

teachers, wrote essays about what they thought they would be like at the age of 100. Others fashioned creative hats and t-shirts displaying 100 items and completed several 100-themed word games and creative counting projects.

The calendar may still say winter, but Keep Islip Clean is already prepared for springtime community enhancement projects. This coming season represents the 26th consecutive year that KIC volunteers have contributed to a beautiful community and healthy environment through litter cleanups, beautification projects, recycling events and other related activities in the three months centered around Earth Day in April. These events take place from March 1st through May 31st and are KIC’s contribution to the Great

American Cleanup, which is the signature initiative of the national organization, Keep America Beautiful. It is the largest community improvement program in the nation. KIC is a proud affiliate of Keep America Beautiful. Volunteers are encouraged to create their own enhancement activity, with KIC providing direction, cleanup supplies and other support to help make each project a success. In addition, volunteers can visit KIC’s website at www. keepislipclean.org for a continuously updated list of community events.

Great American Cleanup activities can be extended to include education and a KIC representative is available to visit grade school students to talk about keeping their town clean and green.KIC also encourages Earth Day themed recycled art and poster contests. North Shore-LIJ Southside Hospital is KIC’s local sponsor for these events. EJ Bosti Faculty and staff, men and women, wore bright red outfits on Friday, February 6th, in recognition of National Go Red for Women day! Bosti Principal Dr. Gail Cholden joined the brightly colored staff, along with millions of women across the country wearing red as a symbol of the battle

against heart disease in women. Heart disease is the #1 killer of women, causing 1 in 3 deaths each year, almost one female every minute! The American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women program encourages more research and improved action to promote women’s heart

health. Edward J. Bosti faculty and staff have been sharing facts about women’s heart health, and raising funds to continue the fight against heart disease. Sayville Social Studies students in ninth and tenth grades participated in a little bit of history this year. They along, with their parents, attended Sayville High School’s National History Day Evening Showcase that displayed the research projects the students had prepared for the National History Day competition; this year’s theme was “Leadership and Legacy.” National History Day (NHD), a national academic program, holds an annual, historical-research based competition that encourages students to delve into serious historical study. According to National History Day website: “Students choose historical topics related to a theme and conduct extensive primary and secondary research through libraries, archives, museums, oral history interviews, and historic sites. After analyzing and interpreting their sources and drawing conclusions about their topics’ significance in history, students present their work in original papers, websites, exhibits, performances and documentaries. These products are entered into competitions in the spring at local, state and national levels where they are evaluated by professional historians and educators. The program culminates in the Kenneth E. Behring National Contest each June held at the University of Maryland at College Park.” While this is the second year Sayville has submitted entries into the National History Day competition - last year Emily Sneddon was given a special award for her project on the Holocaust - this is the first year the Social

Studies organizers offered an event for the parents. To compete in National History Day, the Sayville social studies students did more than just look up a few facts about the past. Rather, they engaged in critical thinking and problem solving while honing their research, reading, and writing skills. By thoroughly learning their subjects, they became genuine authorities. This was quite evident during the evening showcase, when the students confidently answered questions about their

presentations. “This evening event was a huge success,” noted Social Studies teacher LynnAnn Perlin, who along with Steve Aronsen, coordinated the event. After acknowledging the other Social Studies teachers who participated (Brian Bennett, Sue Hart, Mike Pace, Sabine Loriston, Deb Armendinger, and Alyssa Kremer) Ms. Perlin also added, “Our First Annual History Day event far surpassed our

Leadership & Legacies expectations in terms of what it has provided our students. The night offered students a rare opportunity to research a topic of their choice, create a visual presentation, and share the finished product with both their peers and members of the community. In the future, we hope to see this event grow and continue to provide students with a sense of pride and accomplishment.” By the end of the evening, prizes were awarded to the top projects, and nine students advanced to the Regional National History Day Competition at Hofstra University, scheduled for March 8th. Jaren Bergen, who loves history so much he participated in the competition as an independent study even though he is a Junior, summed up the experience. “National History Day provides students with the chance to extend their interests in the social sciences beyond the classroom. Being able to study a topic of personal interest, while simultaneously cultivating research skills, engages students in taking ownership over their own learning.” Jared, who was part of a partnership that created a website about Robert H. Jackson, will move on to the Regional competition along with eight other students. Kudos go to all the students for the efforts, with special congratulations to the nine students who will compete at the Regional level: Philip Rinaldi, Thomas Faughnan, James Velasquez, Sean Barry, Michael Pace, Michael Steck, Gianna Scoleri, Jared Bergen, and Emily Sneddon.

Hip Pickles Mr. John Delio, Principal of Connetquot’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School, welcomed Chet and John of the Hip Pickles to the school on February 5th. The Hip Pickles is a percussion group that uses an interactive musical approach to spread the message that reading is fun! The Hip Pickles called on the excited members of the audience to take part in the presentation by playing

drums, tambourines and … buckets! Students loved the energy of the musical instruments, and the message that encouraged students to read, and participate in Slocum’s PARP (Parents as Reading Partners) program. PARP is a state-wide PTA (Parent-Teacher Association) program that asks parents to read with their children for at least 15 minutes each day. Reading is not only informative,

Astronomy Inspiration but fun. Reading together with parents strengthens reading and communication skills, as well as the relationship between children and their parents. The assembly was sponsored by the Edith L. Slocum PTA Cultural Arts Program. Connetquot Central School District high school astronomy students have been working in conjunction with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) engineers and astronauts to research the impact of craters on Earth,

Mercury, Venus, Mars, Earth’s moon and the asteroid Vesta. Using pictures taken by astronauts on board the International Space Station, the students were able to compare the craters’ impact on Earth, the moon and other planets.

The Astronomy students, along with their instructor, Ms. Stephanie Burns, are very excited to continue their experiments and further their knowledge in the field of astronomy as they expect to receive more pictures to research in the future.

Taking The Helm Ann Peltier of Patchogue, a member of Oyster Bay Power Squadron, will become commander of the United States Power Squadrons, District 3 (Long Island) at the Melville Marriott on March 14th. Ann will call her watch and the 16 local squadron commanders within D3 the “D3 Pearls.” She

has achieved the grade of Senior Navigator, the highest educational grade possible, indicating that she has successfully passed all available advanced grade and elective courses covering every aspect of navigation and seamanship. Ann would also like to work with local Girl Scouts and Boy scouts to develop “Safe Water Programs” for scout meetings and after school events. Ann has been an elementary school teacher,

bookkeeper, human resources director, as well as church educator and Girl Scout volunteer. She and her husband Tom enjoy time on their boat “In The Mood.” Ann joined the United States Power Squadrons in 1999, and within a year, started to take on responsibilities as webmaster, newsletter editor, and event

coordinator, before taking on leadership positions in her local squadron and then District 3 (Long Island). Photography Contest Assemblyman Dean Murray is inviting all area high school students to take part in his Annual Student Photography Contest. The contest will focus on photographs of communitybased events and allows students to showcase their

hometowns or schools. Photographs can consist of town government functions or other public events, a building of historical significance or anything the student feels captures the community’s essence. Entries will be judged by a
