I remember the day like it was yesterday… which is fairly impressive, considering it was actually 17 years ago, to the day in fact. This momentous occasion of which I speak, on March 8th, 2000, was the date I was told by our high school principal that I was, in fact, “officially” the valedictorian of our senior class. I can’t say the news was a complete shock, as we had all been given informal ranks pending the start of the college application process several months prior. At the time, my guidance counselor had informed my parents and I that all paperwork sent out from the administrative offices would name me as “approximately” first, a fact that I had never even thought to consider up until that very moment. I had always enjoyed school and had accumulated a collection of Honors and Advanced Placement classes
on my transcript by my senior year; but class rank was not something I had ever particularly focused my attention on. I knew it existed, obviously; but most colleges were more concerned with your overall GPA and SAT scores, not your comparison among a class of your peers. As I rounded the corner on that afternoon, en route to our “rotunda” outside the cafeteria, I was startled to find the principal seated there next to one of my friends. “Oh good, you’re here,” he said. Uh oh, I thought. My mind raced, trying to determine what I could have done to warrant this unexpected visit. Next to him, my friend had a sly smile on his face. What is this about? I couldn’t imagine. “I have some news,” he grinned, standing up and extending his hand in congratulations. “It’s official – you’re number one.” And there it was. Twelve years of hard work and
dedication, culminating in that moment, that handshake – and those five words. It was unforgettable, so much so that I chose to capture the instant in one of my college scholarship essays. The theme was “The Most Memorable Moment of My Life.” And it was; possibly, still is. The bell rang, signaling it was time to head to our next class. But I had something to do first. I raced over to the wall of payphones by our front entrance, digging for quarters as I ran through the hallway (remember, this was 17 years ago). My hands shaking, I excitedly dialed my home number. “Mom!” I practically squealed into the receiver. “Guess what???” Since then, that date has been ingrained in my mind. Each year, it comes and goes, bringing with it a smile as I recall all the happy memories of a moment that seems so fresh … and yet, so very, very long ago. Officially.

Welcome to Bayport
The Welcome to Bayport signs, crafted by the Great South Bay Sign Company of Bayport, provided a warm welcome to residents and visitors of the quaint South Shore community until they were unfortunately destroyed in acts of vandalism in 2016. The late Suffolk County Presiding Officer, William J. Lindsay, sponsored the installation of the signs upon being elected in 2001 by securing a County community support grant, which are now defunct, to do so. After receiving many calls from residents and business owners and through discussions with the Bayport Civic Association and the Bayport-Blue Point Chamber of Commerce, current Legislator Bill Lindsay sought to find a funding source to replace the signs. Fortunately, he
didn’t have to look far, as small business owners, Ben and Hank Brinkmann of Brinkmann’s Hardware stepped up and graciously donated the full cost to fix and install the signs. At a recent meeting of the Bayport Civic Association, Ben and Hank Brinkmann were honored by Lindsay and his partners in government, Islip Town Councilwoman Kate Mullen and Brookhaven Councilman Neil Foley, for their generous donation to the community. Lenore Ringer-Prezioso and Bob Draffin, Presidents of the Bayport-Blue Point Chamber of Commerce and Bayport Civic Association, respectfully, offered their sincere appreciation for the Brinkmann’s efforts. The Brinkmann’s involvement with the community has always gone far beyond employing
residents and providing excellent customer service. Since the opening of the first Brinkmann’s Hardware store in Sayville in 1976, they have expanded to Blue Point, Holbrook and Miller Place, yet despite their incredible success they have remained committed to their roots of fostering community development and enhancing neighborhoods. Lindsay stated, “Certain small aspects help to highlight a community and provide a charming touch to the neighborhood. Ben and Hank understand that fully and I thank them for their generous donation to help preserve the culture of our community. Now with the funding in place, the signs will be installed in the coming weeks.
Student Photo Contest Assemblyman Dean Murray will once again host his annual Student Photography Contest this spring, and invites all high school students in the 3rd Assembly District to take part. This contest focuses on photographs of community-based events, and allows students to showcase their hometowns or schools. “This contest is a great opportunity for our students to explore and show off their creative talent. I’m excited to be hosting this event once again,” said Murray. “I look forward to this contest every year and to the impressive talent that our students have here on
Long Island.” Photographs can consist of town government functions or other public events, a building of some historical significance, or anything that the student feels captures the essence of their community. Entries will be judged by a panel that will look at content, photographic competence, and additional artistic factors. The winner of this contest, along with their parents or chosen guardian, will be invited to be Assemblyman Murray’s guest in Albany during an upcoming session of the New York State Assembly. The winning student will be given a guided tour
of the historic Capitol and allowed access to the Assembly Chamber to take pictures during a live session of the state legislature. The top five photographs will be displayed in the State Legislative Building and all entries will be displayed at the Brookhaven Town Hall. Those interested in entering the contest must contact Assemblyman Murray’s office at 631.207.0073 for official contest rules and an entry form. Each student may enter up to two photographs. The deadline for submission is Friday, April 7th, 2017.

Model UN Conference Connetquot High School’s Model United Nations Club recently showcased their skills and talents when they hosted 300 high school students from Long Island and New York City for the 2017 Model UN Conference. “The hard work and dedication that these students have shown
throughout the year is awe-inspiring,” said club advisor Jennifer Bay. “The effort they put in to tackle current events and world issues is inspirational, and gives me hope for our world’s future.” As part of their participation in the program, Model UN members are able to
step into the shoes of ambassadors representing their nations at the UN in Manhattan. During the conference, students debate current issues, prepare draft resolutions, plot strategy and negotiate with supporters and adversaries.
Academic Honor As a result of her continued academic promise and success, Connetquot High School senior Abigail Savit has been named a finalist in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. Abigail is one of 15,000 students throughout the
nation to achieve finalist standing after being selected as a semifinalist earlier this school year. She earned these honors based on her outstanding PSAT score (1480 out of 1520), academic record and successful completion of a comprehensive application
process. She will be notified in May if she is one of the 7,500 students across the nation who will receive one of the National Merit Scholarships, worth approximately $33 million in total.

Healthy Heart Clinics
Clinical Medical Assisting (CMA) students at the Academy at Ward Technical Center in Riverhead and Milliken Technical Center in Oakdale hosted separate Healthy Heart Clinics in February servicing over 300 clients. They practiced the skills they are learning such as monitoring body temperature, pulse rate, respiration rate, and blood pressure. They also conducted glucose and cholesterol testing. Each student was assessed by their teacher on whether they followed
safety precautions, and if they documented and explained results to the client. CMA Teacher Betty Martin said, “Students were also required to research and create an informational pamphlet on healthy heart practices or on diseases or heart conditions like pericarditis and endocarditis.” The pamphlets were offered to the clients at the conclusion of the examination. The CMA course encompasses anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, clinical and laboratory procedures, as
well as medical law and ethics. CMA Teacher in Riverhead Michelle Burton shared that the students participate in local clinical internships and may attain national certification from the Certified Health Professionals. “Hosting a Healthy Heart Clinic and offering services to agency staff, administrators, and students enrolled in other programs, allows the CMA students to practice their skills they will use working in the health care industry,” said Burton.

Recently, Supervisor Ed Romaine was joined by Town officials to mark the Town Hall lobby installation of the historic mural that was displayed for over 60 years in the former Town Hall building in Patchogue. This artifact of Brookhaven Town history was painted in 1955 by Mount Sinai artist Robert Zoeller. It commemorates the 300th Anniversary of the founding of the Town of Brookhaven. In the center are two seals. The left one is the Seal of the Duke of York. The right one is the Seal of the Town of Brookhaven, used until 1977, when the date was corrected from 1686 to 1655. The three empty areas of beige color are not part of the mural, but were the location of three round-top windows in the former Town Hall spiral staircase. The mural can be viewed during regular business hours at Town Hall, Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm.

The left panel of the mural illustrates the Setalcott Indian village on the edge of a north shore bay, probably Setauket Harbor. The village is busy, but all attention is drawn to the incoming ship, which is bringing the first settlers to the area. The right panel represents the payment for the first deed given to the first settlers. A copy of the April 14th, 1655 deed can be seen in the display case in the lobby of Town Hall.

Public Library hosted Miniature Golf at the Library. Participants had the opportunity to play nine real holes of miniature golf and enjoy some summer fun on a winter’s day. Members of the Teen Advisory Board handed our scorecards, pencils, golf clubs and balls, providing their invaluable assistance
to make this special day run smoothly. Teen Librarian Angela Breslin organized the event, which was enjoyed by everyone who attended. Whether keeping score and just having fun, it was a swing into summer and a reminder that the library is a place for all seasons!
