Musings on March In like a lion… so blow the winds of March, and with them, promises of springtime blossoms nurtured by the warmth of the sun. But until then, we must contend with the last of winter’s storms, cold and rainy as they may be. Seems to be a metaphor for life as a whole, this month of transition which ushers us out of the doldrums of our hibernation into newfound energy and possibility. Of course, change is not necessarily seasonal, nor is it always dictated by Mother Nature, but the symbolism holds true nonetheless. Being of Irish descent, one of the more notable milestones has always been St. Patrick’s Day; however, upon visiting the Emerald Isle several years back, I was

intrigued to learn that the date holds little significance for those who reside across the Atlantic. The celebration which ensues on the main streets of many cities in America is, in fact, unique to the great U.S. of A. While spring officially arrives in just about two weeks, I have always associated the beginning of the season with the arrival of the Easter bunny and all the pastel decor it brings. Once April gets underway, it’s a fast track to warmer days ahead, afternoons spent soaking up the sun on the beach and summer concerts under the stars. But I digress. March, the month of tumult and turmoil, fading out into the serenity of spring. So it flows, and with

it we too are carried on the breeze as it beckons better things ahead. In the words of a quote I recently came across, We do not fear the unknown. We fear what we think we know about the unknown. A wise sentiment indeed. If only we could manage to harness these apprehensions and redirect them into positive motivation and drive to move forward, we would all be in much better position to succeed. Easier said than done, as with most things; but still, worth the effort in changing our mentality. Perhaps in the spring. ’Til then, stay warm and dry and enjoy these last few weeks of winter. And then, out like a lamb… to brighter days just over the horizon.

While PrepVolleyball.com AllAmericans MacKenzie Cole and Nicole Migliozzi were the driving force this season, according to Coach Hertz, “This year’s championship is a reflection of the dedication of an entire team, determined to bring the New York State crown back to Connetquot,” Coach Hertz thanked Mr. Felicio and the members of the Connetquot Teachers Association for their generous support of the 2017 New York State Volleyball Champions!

Welcome Friends of Greater Port Jefferson, Inc., DBA Welcome Friends

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters, local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders and local village government. They begin the day early, picking up and delivering food donations. The food is then stored, sorted and prepared for the chefs. Volunteers set up, serve and clean after mealtimes. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders

and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup Kitchen announced their decision to become an independent not-for-profit corporation, named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become selfsustaining with a solid foundation of local community support. As they enter this exciting phase, the new corporation will serve our neighbors in the same caring tradition that has been the hallmark of these soup kitchens. Welcome Friends has independently met the challenge to become selfsustaining to ensure that guests need not fear the loss of meals. Under the leadership of the Executive Committee and Kitchen Coordinators, volunteers create a sense of community for neighbors affected by hunger and poverty by serving them with dignity and respect in a safe welcoming environment. Welcome Friends is currently in need of the following volunteer positions: Cooks, Assistant Cooks/ Food Prep and Pick Up/Delivery and a Grant Writer! “I’d like to say that our engagement story was picture-perfect but, the truth is our engagement was as real life as it gets. Kurt was coming over and, on his way in, he gave me a package from “outside” that he said must had been delivered. I didn’t think too much of it; I figured it was something I had ordered for Christmas. I opened it up and there was a box of Lucky Charms with a very legitimate looking letterhead. It said that I was a winner of their “Marshmallows Only” contest, which I had entered religiously over past few months since their promotion started. I was so excited that I put down the letter before I finished reading it, and took out two bowls for him and I to enjoy. A few minutes passed and he asked me if I read the letter and I answered him “yes” - but the truth is I didn’t. I was too involved in my marshmallow winnings to be concerned about the invoice. He picked it up and said to me that I won a prize. I answered him, “Of course I won a prize, we are eating it! Marshmallows are the best prize ever!” I took the letter from him and finished reading it. It said “Congratulations Ms. Titcomb! Please take the prize at the bottom of the box as a token of our appreciation!” I reached in the box and pulled out a little blue velvet box, and when I turned around, he was down on one knee and asked me for my hand in marriage. I was so surprised I wanted to scream with joy, but I still had a mouthful of marshmallows and started to choke a little bit. He asked me if I was okay and to please not throw up on him. I was finally able to stop coughing and he looked up at me - still down on one knee because I had forgotten to answer him! I finally realized and said, “Yes, 100 million times, YES!” He got up and we kissed and I was crying tears of pure joy! I realized he had painstakingly hand-picked out hundreds of marshmallows over weeks and weeks to give me the absolute sweetest, thoughtful engagement I could have ever imagined. It may not have been picture-perfect for everyone, but it couldn’t have been more perfect for us. Sometimes things don’t always go exactly as planned, but with a little bit of luck and a heart filled with love, memories like this will surely be cherished forever!”

A collaboration among unrelated programs at the Islip Career Center recently introduced emergency medical procedures to a wide group of students. Those programs are Health Related Occupations and Canine Careers. When teachers from both programs realized that learning a variety of life-saving methods would serve all of their students, they joined forces. Islip Career Center is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides special career education services to students with special needs. The skills they acquire

may enable them to obtain entry-level employment in certain fields. It’s common practice for Health Related Occupations Teacher Deirdre Kroupa to cover CPR and the Heimlich maneuver. This time, she and Canine Careers Teacher Lisa Konnerth worked together to bring additional skills to both classes. They taught a combined group lesson of the Heimlich maneuver and CPR for adults, infants, and canines. Canine Careers students found the CPR for man’s best friend to be of particular interest, as

did the Health Related Occupations students since first responders perform the procedure on dogs rescued from lifethreatening situations. Students worked in tandem and with their teachers to practice these skills on each other and on CPR mannequins. “Uniting with another program exposed everyone to more life-saving skills than working alone,” said Kroupa. “This type of interprogram collaboration is common practice throughout Eastern Suffolk BOCES and for good reason – the benefits are remarkable.”

Two Science Research students from Sachem High School North in the Sachem Central School District recently showed off their neuroscience skills at the Long Island Brain Bee, held at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra University on February 3rd. The annual competition gives interested students a venue to explore multiple disciplines associated with the study of the brain and exposes them to career opportunities available in neurology, neurosurgery, psychology and

neuroscience. Competing among 35 other high school students from Nassau and Suffolk counties, junior Amy DeLury placed second and freshman Nistha Boghra received a certificate of completion for her participation in the contest. The one-day competition is comprised of three components: a written test on brain facts, laboratory demonstrations on normal and pathological human brain and spinal cord specimens, and a test to identify the anatomical structures and functions of a real human brain.

“I am impressed by the dedication displayed by Amy and Nistha,” said Science Research teacher Gregg McGrath. “Both students devoted significant time and energy to learning about the brain and nervous system prior to the competition. They were both great representatives of Sachem High School North.” The event concluded with a lunch, during which the students were able to converse with experts in brain biology on concepts and ideas covered in the competition.

Buddy Bench Donation Legislator Tom Cilmi joined students and staff of Connetquot School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School to accept and applaud Troop 1241’s donation of two “Buddy Benches.” The donation was made possible through fundraising efforts led by Cadette Troop 1241 as part of their Silver Award project. The girls raised enough money to donate two benches, one to be placed by the kindergarten playground and the other one by the older children’s playground. Table Donation Bayport-Blue Point High School senior Dan Milazzo utilized his remarkable craftsmanship skills to create a beautiful wooden table, which he generously donated to the school’s guidance office. Dan spent weeks working under Eastern Suffolk BOCES welding instructor John Akers, carefully designing a proper layout and utilizing materials such as iron

The finished project was adorned with rustic iron beams as leg support, a gorgeous, lustrous finish and a plaque in the center of the tabletop which reads, “Designed, Built and Donated by Dan Milazzo Bayport-Blue Point High School Class of 2018.” After graduation in June, Dan plans to continue to fine-tune his craftsmanship

skills, as he aspires to join the Ironworkers Union as a potential career path. He was joined by representatives of Eastern Suffolk BOCES, BayportBlue Point High School faculty and staff and his family members for a small reception held in the guidance office of BayportBlue Point High School to celebrate the completion of the table.

Fluffy, gentle rabbits really trigger the senses. That’s why Eastern Suffolk BOCES special education teachers Gail Vitale and Lisa Konnerth teamed up to bring a multisensory lesson involving Angora rabbits to Vitale’s

classroom. Vitale teaches at Brookhaven Learning Center’s included site within the Samoset Middle School and Konnerth is the Canine Careers Teacher at the Islip Career Center in Oakdale.

Brookhaven Learning Center, Islip Career Center, and the included site at Samoset are all Eastern Suffolk BOCES facilities that provide services to students with special education needs. This activity utilized the senses of touch, sight, smell, and hearing. Students learned about the rabbits, what they eat, how they live, when they shed their fur, and took turns sitting with the rabbits and petting them. They watched Konnerth brush the rabbits and use a pedalpowered wheel to spin yarn from the fur. “Multisensory projects are ideal for students with autism,” explained Vitale. “Wrapping a lesson around a topic that exposes as many of their senses as possible helps them to learn and understand.”

Sachem Standouts Sachem High School East senior Tharini Prakash and High School North senior Paige Mennici have been named finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Tharini is president of the English Honor Society, treasurer of class government and a member of the Outdoors Club. She is enrolled in a plethora of Advanced Placement classes, including physics, economics, calculus, literature, environmental science and French. Tharini plans to pursue

a degree in economics and politics at one of her top three school choices: Princeton University, University of Pennsylvania or Yale University. Paige has had perfect NYSSMA scores since eighth grade and was selected to the AllState chorus ensemble this year. She is the copresident of the Drama Club, vice president of the Music Honor Society and secretary of the National Honor Society. Paige plans to pursue a degree in music industry and song

writing at The College of Saint Rose. Approximately 15,000 students have been selected as finalists based on a number of rigorous academic requirements. The nationwide pool of finalists represents less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest-scoring from each state. Beginning in March and concluding in June, 7,500 finalists will be notified that they have been chosen to receive a Merit Scholarship.

Spelling Showdown Sachem’s super spellers showed off their skills at the annual fifth-grade districtwide spelling bee on February 7th at Chippewa Elementary School. Students of all grade levels at Bayport-Blue Point High School recently attended a highly important assembly about antibullying and mutual respect, as hosted by public speaker and Teen Truth President/CEO JC Pohl. During his multi-layered presentation, Mr. Pohl suggested that students ask themselves what they can do on a daily basis in order to continue to cultivate a welcoming and prosperous learning environment. He offered valuable advice on how to deal with the pressures of everyday life before conducting a visual exercise aimed at showing the students that bullying is a topic experienced by many.

In addition to being a talented public speaker, Mr. Pohl is also a gifted filmmaker, a talent he shared with the staff and students. During the assembly, Mr. Pohl showed his short film consisting of footage shot entirely by students who decided it was time to make a change in the world. The footage showcased high school students throughout the nation who, like many students nowadays, are discouraged by bullying and disrespectful actions toward one another. After viewing the film, the students were asked to reflect on how it made them feel as an individual and how they would become ambassadors for

change in the world. Immediately following the assembly program, Mr. Pohl joined the Bayport-Blue Point High School Student Leaders for a summit workshop. The program was hosted with the goal of achieving objectives such as developing a greater understanding of what it means to be a leader, and brainstorming student issues that are affecting school culture. Mr. Pohl instilled in the students the phrase that a leader must act (A) with compassion (C) today (T), as the students confidently recited these words, which formulate Teen Truth’s mantra of A.C.T.
