onnetquot Central School District Ronkonkoma Middle School students recently performed a musical rendition of the popular DreamWorks movie Shrek. The middle school students entertained their family, friends, school administrators and the Connetquot community with intriguing music and dance performances. The event was organized to encourage students to participate and develop an appreciation for theater and arts.

You couldn’t tell by looking at the well-adjusted, charismatic guest speaker, Shadrack Boakye, that he was a Liberian refugee who nearly died at the hands of rebels when he was a toddler; or that later, while trying to adjust to America without knowing English or having a comparable education, he was so isolated by racial harassment and negativity, that as a seventh grader, Shadrack contemplated ending it all. The transformative power of kindness, from an Eighthgrade teacher, turned his life around, and now Shadrack Boakye is a successful motivational speaker,
award-winning playwright, the youngest male recipient of Black History Month Distinguished Service Award, and CEO of The Truth Urban Theater Group, who has made it his mission to share his story of compassion and kindness with others. During the recent assembly with Sayville students, Shadrack immediately engaged them in a demonstration of the power of “bad fruit*” (his term for negativity) by opening his presentation with an improv-style skit. A student volunteer was enlisted to act out a simple scene - pretending to make
a fried egg. While using humor to “poke fun” at the volunteer student, Shadrack demonstrated how his belittling incapacitated the student so completely, that the student was unable to perform the simple task. By extension, global atrocities that plague nations are derived from cruelty and abusive behaviors one person afflicts on another. Despite his own harrowing experiences as a victim and refugee, which he shared honestly and poignantly, Shedrack focused on the positives that life had to offer. His message was clear: words and actions tear down
the confidence of others and make them vulnerable to self-destructive behaviors. Conversely, simple acts of kindness can build up the human spirit. Enlisting the entire audience to participate in another demonstration, this one to show the power of “good fruit,” Shadrack asked each student to turn to each other and simply say Good Morning, “as if you mean it.” The positive energy that filled the auditorium with just the genuine exchange of greetings was indeed impressive, and that good feeling stayed with the Sayville students throughout the rest of their day. The overall response to Shadrack Boakye’s life-affirming story was extremely positive and memorable for both Sayville students and staff. His visit was made possible through the generosity of “The Neighborhood House of Sayville,” created to address the epidemic of people dying by suicide or drug overdose, and the absence of hope that is permeating our society.

Confucius said, “The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” Such is the principle of proactivity based upon, of taking small steps to advance great lengths, ultimately. The key, of course, it to begin the process. Complacency is man’s worst enemy; however, settling into such a mindset is perhaps one of the simplest tasks to accomplish. Never mind that “To Do” list – it will be there tomorrow. And the next day. And the day after that. This is closely followed by its evil bedfellow, entitlement; that sense that you somehow deserve more than you have without feeling the need to prove it, or earn it, as the case
may be. Together, these flaws can lead once promising, motivated individuals down a path of bitterness, resentment and arrogance – not a flattering combination. The problem is, you don’t see it happening. You exist day to day, you settle into your routines, and then…well, then you just settle. Plain and simple. Ambition flies out the window, and with it, that drive that propelled you forward for so many years falls flat. As easy as it is to fall prey to this downward spiral, it takes a concerted effort to right the ship and get back on course. This is where the “small stones” come into play. Even something as simple as making lists, outlines of what needs to be done in a

FLOSSING WITH CHOMPS - Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School recently welcomed ‘Chomps’ the dinosaur to teach students the importance of dental hygiene. Local dental hygienist Kerri Musi and dental assistant Becky Meija used the dinosaur puppet named ‘Chomps’ to demonstrate the proper way for the K-2nd grade students to clean, protect, and preserve their teeth. The event was organized as part of a health and wellness initiative designed to teach students the importance of living healthy lives.

After studying different cultures and learning about the traditions of telling stories to pass down information, the fourth-graders at Blue Point Elementary in the Bayport-Blue Point School District represented their classroom community by sewing a quilt.
Each student created a symbol on a quilt square that signified something they value about themselves and that they bring to the classroom community. Students drew an array of symbols and described many contributions such as teamwork, compassion,

immediately. Sometimes you may think that people are just joking around, but their intentions are to just make fun of you without you actually realizing what they are doing to you. Bullying does not have to be just verbal; it can also be cyber bullying and also physical bullying. In my case, I was verbally bullied. The words hurt dreadfully, but one way of handling it was by talking to my family. This was my way of getting the point that I was being bullied out, and I was able to also communicate my feelings when I talked about my situation. My family guided me in techniques to handle the situation and how to put an end to the bullying. Bullying is a serious subject.

SHARING A MESSAGE OF KINDNESS - Connetquot Central School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School 5th grade peer leaders recently performed a play with a theme of “Peace, Love and Kindness” as part of the school’s Random Acts of Kindness Week. The play was based on the children’s book Ordinary Mary’s Extraordinary Deed, which stresses the importance of being kind to friends, family and strangers. The assembly is part of a district-wide initiative designed to teach students the importance of good citizenship and the benefits of community service.

One in ten people get bullied every day. If you notice somebody being bullied, you need to stand up for them and tell the bully, “Stop it! Being a student in seventh grade and a victim of bullying, my definition for bullying is when somebody thinks you are weak, “odd” or strange and makes fun of you for being who you are simply because you are different than them. Bullying is a very serious subject. Many cases of bullying happen each day, and kids do not tell an adult so they can get help putting an end to it. I made this mistake. I did not initially tell an adult, and this lack of action only made it worse for me. If you are getting bullied, you need to tell somebody or

The theme of the Healthy Heart Clinic at Academy LI Milliken Technical Center sponsored by the Clinical Medical Assisting Program was Love Yourself Love Your Heart. The clinical area of the classroom had three examination rooms set up for blood pressure screenings and for clients to have their height and weight checked for Body Mass Index (BMI). Each examination room had a bed, a privacy curtain, and blood pressure screening equipment. Clients rotated to a separate area where they could have their cholesterol and glucose evaluated. Teacher Deborah Leedham said, “We have 44 students enrolled in the morning session and 38 in the afternoon session. The career opportunities are growing tremendously. Our students can get jobs in a doctor’s office, a walkin clinic, and hospitals.”
The occupational outlook for medical assistants, according to the New York State Department of Labor, has grown much faster than the average for all occupations. The growth of the baby-boom population will increase the demand for medical services. With that, physicians may hire more assistants to perform administrative and clinical duties, allowing physicians to see more patients. The clinic was a practical test of the student’s abilities. They also had an independent assignment that would be a part of their final portfolio. “Each student had to create an informational brochure about a disease and disorder of the heart. In addition to having practical skills, the students must demonstrate that they are computer literate, can do research, and can cite information properly,” said Teacher Mary Ann DeMillio.

Two Blue Point Elementary School students – Michael Kiernan and Tessa Orgonas – captured top awards at this year’s Town of Islip Sharp Shooter Basketball Competition. Demonstrating their free throw skills, the students competed against students from more
than 40 local schools, each of which had a local grade level champion representing their respective building. As a result of their precision, Michael was named the runner-up in the fourthgrade competition and Tessa was crowned the first-place winner in the fifth-grade level.

Guided by the Teaching Tolerance Anti-bias Framework, thirteen Sayville High School students and eight Middle School students have been working as Ambassadors for the Town of Islip under the direction of Sayville staff to create a just, equitable, and safe environment for all students. The Ambassadors Program brings students together from school districts within the Town of Islip for the purpose of bringing awareness to all forms of bias and discrimination. Four meetings are held throughout the year, consisting of speakers on various topics as well as activities for young people to bring back to their respective schools and communities. The February 11th conference was held at Sayville H.S. where students hosted other Ambassadors from Brentwood, Islip, Bay Shore, and Central Islip school districts. As it does for all four conferences, Suffolk Transportation Bus Company generously provided transport for all the students to Sayville at no cost. On the day of the assembly at Sayville High School, Lyndsay Smith, Safe SchoolsCoordinator at Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth (LIGALY), and Marvin Smith, who has dedicated more than fifty years to the Civil Rights Movement, shared their messages of tolerance; while Ecuadoreanborn Joselo Lucero, the brother of the hate-crime victim Marcelo Lucero (who had been stabbed to death by a Patchogue teen in 2008) evoked the need for compassion and understanding to replace prejudice. The assembled students from all the schools listened attentively to each of the guest presenters who had unique perspectives on these important issues: • A former K-12 educator who taught middle school chorus and general music, Lyndsay Smith currently serves as a Safe Schools Coordinator
and provides anti-bullying and LGBT cultural competency workshops in heart-to-heart discussions with students, educators, and providers. She also coordinates the Long Island GSA Network and facilitates the Safe Schools Team, a group of young advocates working to create safer schools. • Marvin Smith, with fifty years of experience working in the Civil Right Movement, has traveled the world as a lecturer. Former Islip Town Branch NAACP VP, Secretary and Treasurer of the Leadership Training Institute, he currently serves as Community Liaison
to NYS Assemblyman Phil Ramos. • As Outreach Coordinator for the Hagedorn Foundation, Joselo Lucero visits middle and high schools on Long Island and across the NY metro region to give presentations on how to prevent bullying and hate-crimes. His brother’s murder propelled Joselo to become active in community projects to empower youth and instill leadership qualities. Joselo, who is bilingual in English and Spanish, has become involved with Long Island
based diversity programs, Life Through My Eyes and Embrace Our Differences. The effort to bring neighboring schools together, that included a pizza lunch break as well as the lectures, demonstrated to all that these shared concerns of society extend well beyond the small boundaries of individual school districts, hamlets and towns on Long Island. The Sayville Ambassadors had been very excited about hosting the event and were pleased with its success. “Our final conference date is in April at Islip Town Hall,” noted Sayville H.S. Social Worker and Dignity Act Co-Coordinator Betsy Quinlan. “The students will present their ideas regarding interventions/preventions which they will introduce into their schools. A Wheel Challenge Every year, in preparation for the First (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition, the Sayville High School Robotics Team members and their mentor, Mr. Coon, use a standard “kit of parts” and a common set of rules to design and build a 130-pound robot - and they only have six weeks to do it. FIRST is a nation-wide program, founded in 1989 by inventor and entrepreneur, Dean Kamen, with an imperative, singular focus of exciting more young people about the fun, accessibility, and importance of science and engineering as a career field. The First Robotics Competition combines the excitement of a sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, robotic teams from high schools across the country are challenged to build and program a robot to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It is as close to “real world” engineering as a student can get! This year’s challenge named the “Recycle Rush” is a recycling-themed game played by two alliances of three robots each. Robots score points by stacking storage
bins on scoring platforms. To meet the challenge robots would be required to maneuver in very tight spaces to grasp and lift storage totes positioned closely together at the beginning of each match.
As the robotics club worked on the project, the Sayville students determined that the rubber and plastic wheels included in the standard “kit of parts” would not provide the level of maneuverability required to allow a robot to
approach and lift storage totes placed in close proximity to each other. Instead, the students decided to utilize omni wheels (pictured below), that will allow the robot to move easily and laterally in any direction with little effort for maximum maneuverability. “Making the decision to change from normal rubber-based wheels to omni wheels posed a unique challenge due to the differences in the width across wheels hubs in relation to a wheel shaft designed to support rubber based wheels,” Mr. Coon explained. “To overcome this challenge, Michael Nyman, a robotics team member, utilized 3D product-design knowledge he learned in the Computer Aided Design (CAD) technology class to design custom spaces that would allow the onmi wheels to mount on a standards wheel shaft. After designing the 3 different wheel shaft spacers in SolidWorks Michel utilized the new 3D printer purchased to support CAD technology classes to print out the plastic wheel shaft spacers (picture below) used on this year’s robot.” The Sayville Robotics team will compete in the First Robotics Competition at Hofstra University at the end of March.
