of items, recognizing if they have enough money to buy an item, using a dollar-up strategy to buy an item, and making sure they have enough cash prior to purchasing an item. They are also working on communitybased instruction lessons that cover travel safety, planning ahead for what they need to buy, shopping and selecting items independently, getting on-line, waiting in line appropriately and independently, and interacting and communicating with the

cashier. Money collected from the high school’s recycle program was given to Life Skills students for a community service project, the purchase of items for the Mitten Tree donation. Each student was provided $5 to spend on five items totaling $1.25 each. The students also made a donation box, where donations from others was collected. Not only did the students learn a valuable lesson about money, they fulfilled a desire to help others during the holidays.

The Nassau County Council of School Superintendents held their annual Dress for Success clothing drive to provide professional business attire for women planning to return to the workforce. School superintendents throughout Nassau County donated gently

used ready-to-wear suits, jackets, dresses, skirts and blouses which will be donated to Dress for Success Brookhaven. This organization was created to empower women throughout Long Island to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support,

The organization was formed in 1977 as a result of funding obtained from the Town of Oyster Bay, which enabled them to provide street outreach and job placement for youth. Shortly after, they expanded upon their services for youth and have grow to provide a multitude of programs for children, adults, and families through Federal, State, County and private funding streams. Some of their current programs and services are below: Counseling Services: YES CCC believe family involvement and assistance is an integral part of treatment for children, adolescents, and adults. After all, the greatest successes in treatment often occur when all family members recognize their role related to the presenting problem and are open to active participation in the healing and growing process. Addiction Services: Comprehensive treatment is available to children, adults and families facing the complex problems of chemical dependency, as well as DWI assessments and specialized recovery groups. Early Intervention Project: This program offers prevention and early intervention services to teens and their families at the beginning stages of their alcohol or drug experimentation or abuse. Idle Hour Students Hold Drive For Local Animal Shelter

The third grade classes at Idle Hour Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District worked together to collect donations for Little Shelter Animal Rescue and Adoption Center in Huntington. Prior to the start of the collection, the students created posters and flyers and placed them around the school to publicize the philanthropic activity. The robust collection

of items included dog biscuits, beds, dog and cat food and toys. Teachers Stephanie Zelinski and Erica Gerdts, along with teaching assistant Susy Maron, said that the students were so proud and thankful to have collected so many items from the school community for such a worthwhile organization. Additionally, fourth and fifth grade students who are members of the

student government made dog biscuits and pull toys to add to the third grade animal shelter collection. Under the direction of advisers Lori Gehrke and Lara McNally, the fourth graders used wheat flour, water, peanut butter and honey to make the biscuits. The fifth grade students cut and braided donated towels to make pull toys.

Life’s WORC Introduces Planned Giving Program Life’s WORC (www. lifesworc.org), a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and trust services, now celebrating 50 years in operation, is starting off the new year with a new Planned Giving Program. A complementary program to the organization’s already existing trust and financial services, the Life’s WORC Planned Giving Program will enable donors to create a lasting legacy that benefits Life’s WORC and those it serves, while also giving donors significant financial benefits. According to Life’s WORC’s CEO Janet Koch, “Our donors are vital to our ability to fulfill our mission. Providing another way that enables them to help those we serve and address their financial goals prompted us to develop the Planned Giving Program. It is a natural extension of our other financial services and will enable Life’s WORC to be a better resource to both individuals with disabilities and their families, as well as a broader cross-section of the community.” The Life’s WORC Planned Giving Program offers donors various options. These include: gifts that use appreciated assets as a substitute for cash, gifts that return income or other financial benefits to the donor in return for his/ her contribution, and gifts payable upon the donor’s demise through his/her estate planning. Life’s WORC Board Member Ron Aghassi, a single parent of a 20-year old special needs child who lives in a Life’s WORC home noted, “When I made the decision to place my son, Jacob, in a Life’s WORC home, I felt like a great fear was released. As a single parent,

even though I am not old and am in good health, I always worried what would happen to Jacob if something happened to me. Thanks to Life’s WORC, I no longer have that fear. When I made the decision to make a planned gift to Life’s WORC, and after consulting with my financial advisor, we chose the planned giving option that worked best for me. It doesn’t matter what planned giving vehicle you choose to gift. It only matters that you invest in the future of this great agency that is ensuring the future of my son and the over 2,000 individuals like him supported by Life’s WORC.” To implement its program, Life’s WORC’s Planned Giving Program has a team of experienced professionals consisting of a Planned Giving Administrator, Financial Specialist and Planned Giving Attorney. These individuals will work closely with donors’ financial advisors and estate planning attorneys to ensure that sound financial decisions are made. serving children with developmental disabilities. Rivera first learned about these conditions from Life’s WORC founder Victoria Schneps Yunis. Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed at an early age with severe brain damage, was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than 5,000 residents. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps Yunis started Life’s WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. Today, Life’s WORC provides beautiful homes located across the region, from Nassau and Suffolk to Queens and Manhattan, in addition to community services, financial and trust services, and the programs and services of its Family Center for Autism. Connetquot High School students sent the campuswide message that no one is alone with their struggles and that there are students and faculty that care during P.S. I Love You Day, held on Feb. 11 and hosted by the student government. P.S. I Love You Day is held on Long Island every second Friday of February.

The awareness campaign was developed by Brooke DiPalma in honor of her deceased father, a retired New York Police Department officer, who took his own life when she was 14 years old. His last words to Brooke were, “I Love You.” Leading up to the event, the student government sold purple

shirts to students, faculty and staff and the proceeds were donated to a suicide prevention resource center. Student Government President Zachary Palazzotto made announcements throughout the day to promote positivity and well-being, while students made sure to let family and friends that they are loved.

The Reboli Center Presents Through The Lens, Showcasing The Photography Of Joseph Reboli And Many Prominent Photographers

JOE REBOLI 5G PHOTOGRAPH STREETSCAPE The Reboli Center for Art & History in Stony Brook will for the first time feature the photographs of the late artist Joseph Reboli and several wellknown Long Island and New York based photographers such as: Donna Crinnian; Jeremy Dennis; Vanessa Fischer; Daniel Jones; Jacques LeBlanc; Timothy McCarthy; Jessica Neilson; Patricia Paladines; Matthew Raynor, Paul Scala; Leonid Shishov; Corinne Tousey; Marlene Weinstein; and Jo-Anne Wilson. The exhibit is titled Through the Lens and can be viewed through March 27, 2022. In conjunction with this exhibit, a companion show is in the History Room focusing on the life and work of nature photographer, Howard Eskin, a patron of the arts and dear friend of Joseph Reboli, who also collected many of his paintings. The Reboli Center is grateful to Lisa Eskin for lending items and for providing background information. JEREMY DENNIS PHOTOGPRAHER Eskin concentrated on photographing nature, and many of his pictures were published by the Audubon Society. In addition, there will be a slideshow depicting the evolution of photography from when the first recorded photograph was taken in the early 1800s. “Just as Joe’s paintings glowed with illuminous light, so do his photographs. Joe was not widely known for his photography, but he really enjoyed it and I am happy to share that side of him. I have known the Eskin family for a longtime, and am very proud to document Howard’s life and work as part of this new exhibit,” said Lois Reboli, a founder and president of the Reboli Center for Art & History. The Long Island Pet Expo returns for the first time since the outbreak of COVID on March 5-6, 2022, with fur flying entertainment, dog sporting competitions and educational programs designed for the whole family. The event returns to the Suffolk Federal Credit Union Arena and features many special attractions, pet adoptions and outstanding shopping for pet lovers and their pets. “The Long Island area is passionate about animals and pets of all kinds,” said show co-producer Karen Garetano of Family Pet Shows, which runs seven similar events in the northeast. “We are excited to be back in the area after a long, unplanned break. The number of pet licenses

in the region has almost doubled since the start of COVID, and the interest in the event seems to have doubled too based on our phones and social media activity.” The 80+ special exhibits always feature some of the hottest new products coming out often before they hit the retail shelves. American Heart Association Warns Of Snow Shoveling Health Hazards The American Heart Association says that for most people, shoveling snow may not lead to any health problems. However, the association warns that the risk of a heart attack during snow shoveling may increase for some, as the combination of colder temperatures and physical exertion increases the workload on the heart. People who are outdoors in cold weather should avoid sudden exertion, like lifting a heavy shovel full of snow. Even walking through heavy, wet snow or snow drifts can strain a person’s heart. For those who are sedentary, or people with existing heart conditions like heart failure, high blood pressure or cholesterol, the increased workload on the heart from activities such as shoveling of heavy snow, can put them at higher risk for heart attack—where a clot blocks blood flow to a heart artery causing the heart muscle damage or tissue death. This is a life-threatening medical emergency. To help make snow removal safer, the American Heart Association has compiled a list of practical tips. · Give yourself a break. Take frequent rest breaks

during shoveling so you don’t overstress your heart. Pay attention to how your body feels during those breaks. · Don’t eat a heavy meal prior or soon after shoveling. Eating a large meal can put an extra load on your heart. · Use a small shovel or consider a snow thrower. The act of lifting heavy snow can raise blood pressure acutely during the lift. It is safer to lift smaller amounts more times, than to lug a few huge shovelfuls of snow. When possible, simply push the snow. · Learn the heart attack warning signs and listen to your body, but remember this: Even if you’re not sure it’s a heart attack, have it checked out (tell a doctor about your symptoms). Minutes matter! Fast action can save lives — maybe your own. Don’t wait more than five minutes to call 9-1-1. · Don’t drink alcoholic beverages before or immediately after shoveling. Alcohol may increase a person’s sensation of warmth and may cause them to underestimate the extra strain their body is under in the cold. · Consult a doctor. If you have a medical condition,

don’t exercise on a regular basis or are middle aged or older, meet with your doctor prior to the first anticipated snowfall. · Be aware of the dangers of hypothermia. Heart failure causes most deaths in hypothermia. To prevent hypothermia, dress in layers of warm clothing, which traps air between layers forming a protective insulation. Wear a hat because much of your body’s heat can be lost through your head. Heart Attack Warning Signs Some heart attacks are sudden and intense — the “movie heart attack,” where it is clear what’s happening. But most heart

attacks start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. Often people affected aren’t sure what’s wrong and wait too long before getting help. Here are signs that can mean a heart attack is happening: · Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain. · Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. · Shortness of breath

with or without chest discomfort. · Other signs may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness · As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, and back or jaw pain. Call 9-1-1 emergency medical services (EMS) for rapid transport to the emergency room and treatment when they arrive on the scene. Don’t drive yourself--have someone

drive you to the hospital right away. Heart attacks can cause sudden cardiac arrest, where the heart stops beating, or beats irregularly, failing to pump enough blood. If a victim is unresponsive, not breathing or only gasping, quick recognition and fast action are the keys to saving a life. What You Can Do Bystanders can help cardiac arrest victims survive, if they act fast. First, call 9-1-1 and start CPR right away. Then, if an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is available, use it as soon as possible. If two people are available to help, one should begin CPR immediately while the other calls 9-1-1 and finds an AED. Hands Only CPR is effective in saving lives during cardiac arrest. Hands-Only CPR has just two simple steps. If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, (1) Call 9-1-1; and (2) Push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of the disco song “Stayin’ Alive” (100 beats per minute) until help arrives. Long Island residents participating in ‘Ride United’ receive 2 free Lyft rides (up to $25 each way) to and from vaccination appointments located in Nassau or Suffolk Counties. Connetquot Boys’ Basketball Ends The Season

The Connetquot HS boys’ basketball season came to an end on February 9th at home against Bay Shore HS. The win gave the Marauders a spot in the Suffolk County playoff tournament, and send the T-birds home to mend their bruises. It had been a terribly challenging season for Connetquot, but Coach Kyle Black and his staff kept his players prepared for each game, despite the fact that the team was depleted by covid restrictions and injuries from the very beginning of the season.

Black singled out his lone senior, Ryan Waring, for his leadership during this season, which finally came to an end with an injury against Newfield. Ryan was recognized as the team’s only graduating senior, for his leadership and dedication to the program. Coach Black thanked each of the players who fought their way through adversity to complete the season. Two junior varsity players, Peter Pinero and Joe Maniaci were brought up during the season as a result of the team’s

dwindling numbers. Black was impressed that his more experienced players continued to work hard to finish the season strong, with a respectable finish. Although the T-birds were only down 8 at the half against Bay Shore, they couldn’t recover and finished on the short end of a 77-57 score. Top scorers for Connequot were Pete Pinero (18), Dan Fountaine (12), Mike Catalano (9) and Joe Maniaci (6). Terrell Adderly scored 29 for Bay Shore.
