Are We There Yet?

I’m fairly good with directions. For someone who, as a passenger, is rather oblivious to her surroundings, once in the driver’s seat, I can generally navigate with little trouble. Of course, in this day and age, there is always the added benefit of GPS to fall back on. And by benefit, I mean often maddening source of frustration and bewilderment. Case in point: my friend and I have, over the last several years, attended several of the laser light shows at the Vanderbilt Planetarium. Of course, there are several possible routes to take, but all roads ultimately lead to one winding, somewhat meandering path through the

hilly terrain of Centerport. As these shows are generally in the evening, I always plug the address into the phone’s map so as to be sure I don’t miss a turn en route. Of the approximately half a dozen times we have headed this way, I can honestly say we have never managed to travel the same way twice. Never. Not once. Just last week, as if to prove the point, my phone’s darling virtual assistant proceeded to take us on a grand tour of the residential area surrounding the planetarium, complete with dozens of unnecessary turns (followed by U-turn’s and “rerouting”), forks in the road (continue heading straight, she said) and even a pass over a small body of water (do you remember there

being a bridge here before?). And on the return trip, there was more of the same – except, not quite the same, as we detoured through an entirely different neighborhood. How is this possible?? At a certain point, it became more a source of amusement, a fun guessing game as to which way she might send us next. Amazingly, our time of arrival only fluctuated by a minute or so, in spite of the fact that our route never came close to matching the virtually straight line that had appeared on the map. It was a bizarre journey, to be sure – and will continue to be, should we venture that way again. That, at least, seems to be a guarantee.

York State Assemblyman Andrew Garbarino, Suffolk County Proceeding Officer Dwayne Gregory, the Town of Islip and Supervisor Angie Carpenter, Town of Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine, Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano, Deborah Henley, and from President Jimmy Carter from The Carter Center. Organized in 1914, the United States Power Squadrons is the world’s large private boating organization. The Great South Bay Power Squadron of the United States Power Squadrons has installed its officers for 2017-2018. The Change of Watch meeting was on Friday, February 17th at the Rusy-Bohm Post 411 American Legion, Islip, New York. Arthur K. Wallach, AP, of Commack, NY has been installed as Squadron Commander. Installed to serve with Commander Wallach is John Pergola, AP, of Patchogue, who is Executive Officer; James M. Milton, JN, of Islip Terrace as Squadron Educational Officer; James F. Milton, AP, of Islip Terrace as Secretary; and Steve Potestio, P, of Holbrook as Treasurer. Commander Wallach is a Squadron Advanced Pilot of the United States Power Squadrons and served as the Executive Officer over this last year. Accepting Applications Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter is joining with the Town of Islip Housing Authority to announce the opening of the waiting lists for subsidized housing programs for new applicants. The Town of Islip Housing Authority is accepting applications for the Section 8 Voucher Program, the RAD Section 8 Project Based Voucher Program (Elderly & Family), and the Section 8 Project-Based Voucher Program at Southwind Village (Elderly & Family).

The application period extends from Wednesday, February 22nd through Friday, March 24th. “Our Housing Authority plays a key role in finding permanent dwellings for many of our residents. I urge anyone who is interested in Section 8 housing to contact the Islip Housing Authority immediately,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. Applicants may obtain documents online by visiting www.isliphousing. org. Applications are also available by mailing a

Leader in Me In keeping with their highly successful “Leader in Me” program, Student Lighthouse members at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District recently came together to discuss ways they could help make their school be a more positive and friendly learning environment. The Student Lighthouse team consists of a group of pre-K through fifth-grade

students who collaborate to discuss schoolwide initiatives which will help to enhance their learning experience. Additionally, the students take part in monthly service learning projects geared toward benefiting both the school and community. For the month of January, the team decided that the schoolwide “Wildly Important Goal” should be to read a grand

total of 400 books. Due to everyone’s desire to read, the school was able to surpass its goal by reaching 832 books. In February, the students decorated the lobby’s “Leadership Tree” with inspirational messages, which they will be presenting to their “Grandfriends” at the Arbors Assisted Living Facility in Bohemia.
