Broadway Support Broadway veterans, performers and musicians are spearheading a fundraiser for Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA). An Afternoon with Billy By: Jamie Lynn Ryan In all the hype over our dear Buddy the Betta’s first birthday last week, another momentous occasion got lost in the shufﬂe – my opportunity to attend an intimate Q&A with Billy Joel at my alma mater, C.W. Post. It was designed to give the students of the Long Island High School for the Arts an opportunity to learn from the master, one who happened to make a rather sizable donation to their school in an effort to keep it up and running for the next generation of promising performing artists. Of course, officially, I was “covering” this event in my capacity as a journalist; however, the opportunity

to be a part of such a small audience in front of one of my idols had its own unique appeal on a personal level – at the very institution where I obtained my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree over a decade ago. While not a full-ﬂedged concert by any means, there was “a little music” to go along with the anecdotes, making for an afternoon of memories to last a lifetime. In the weeks since, I had occasion to peruse my college portfolio, where I came across an essay I had written on the hopes and aspirations I had for my career. “Countdown to Commencement,” it was called, covering everything from grad school to loans to the job search to that endless search for fulfillment.

As much as anyone thinks he/she has life all mapped out, it is nearly impossible to rely on a set blueprint. Because, every now and then, life itself beckons, with all its unanticipated twists and turns. Such was my sentiment in the Spring of 2004, and so it remains. If you had told me 12 years ago that I would be back in the Tilles Center theatre, as an editor and columnist, mere feet away from the likes of Billy Joel… well that would have fallen under the “unanticipated” category for sure. I can only imagine the thrill it was for those high school students, those with the world at their feet, endless opportunities stretched before them. Oh, to have that feeling once again…

Parents may be unaware of the dental health timeline, or they could be reluctant to bring their children for fear of how their kids will behave - especially if parents are harboring their own apprehensions about the dentist. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child go to the dentist by age 1, or within six months of the eruption of his or her first tooth. Parents worried about how their kids will respond to the dentist can take the following steps to acclimate kids to dental visits to make them more comfortable during their appointments now and down the road: Be a positive role model. Children frequently learn by example. If they see their parents being diligent about dental care, they’re more likely to embrace proper oral hygiene. Bring children to your own dental appointments so they understand the process and become familiar with the type of equipment used. Routine dental examinations and cleanings are an important component of oral healthcare for both children and adults. However, many children do not visit the dentist until well after the time recommended by medical and dental professionals.

New Officers Installed

The Great South Bay Power Squadron of the United States Power Squadrons has installed its officers for 2016-2017. The “Change of Watch” Meeting was on Friday, February 12th, at Greenwood Hall at 58 Greenwood Avenue in East Islip. Suzanne Mora, JN, of Oakdale, has been reinstalled installed as the Squadron Commander as she served as the Squadron this past year – a first for the Great South Bay Power Squadron. Installed to serve with Commander Mora is Arthur Wallach, AP, of Commack, who is the Executive Officer; John Pergola, AP, of Patchogue as Administrative Officer; James M. Milton, JN, of Islip Terrace as Squadron Educational Officer; Michael Becker, JN, of Holbrook as Secretary; Steve Potestio, P, of Holbrook as Treasurer; and Michael Boland, AP, of West Islip, as Assistant Educational officer. Commander Mora is a Squadron Junior Navigator, of the United States Power Squadrons and served as the Squadron Commander over this last year and Administrative Officer in 2014. Her previous Squadron responsibilities include being Secretary of the Squadron. Suzanne has received the following educational advancements and awards in the Squadron: achieved the grade of Junior Navigator

in 2015, Advanced Pilot in 2014, Pilot in 2013, Seamanship in 2011, and the ABC Boating Course in 2000. She has also earned Educational Proficiency, Cruise Planning, Inland Boat Operations Certification, Skipper Award, Sail, and Operations Training in 2014. She successfully completed Engine Maintenance and Marine Electrical Systems in 2013 and Weather in 2012. Suzanne also serves as a member of the Marketing Committee for District 3 of the United States Power Squadron. She has earned four Merit Marks with the United States Power Squadrons, which is based on dedication and work that has been accomplished within the Squadron. Over 125 Squadron members attended the “Change of Watch” Meeting, along with several elected and governmental officials. Several proclamations were also received and presented to Commander Mora. Elected officials and representatives presented Commander Mora with Proclamations, including Michael Falk, representing New York State Senator Phil Boyle; Eric Hofmaister, Representing New York State Senator; New York State Regional Director Patrick Beckley; Islip Town Clerk Olga H. Murray; and Town of Brookhaven Councilman Neil Foley.

Additional proclamations were presented to Commander Mora were from New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, Suffolk County Presiding Officer Gregory DuWayne, Suffolk County Acting Police Commissioner Timothy D. Sini, Nassau County Acting Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter, and Babylon Town Supervisor Richard Schaffer. Organized in 1914, the United States Power Squadrons is the world’s largest private boating organization. The national organization is comprised of over 40,000 members in over 450 local Squadrons across the country. The United States Power Squadrons is a non-profit organization of boating enthusiasts who have a common interest and appreciation of recreational boating, boating safety, and education. Guide Dog Welcomed Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School Youth and Family Services (YFS) Coordinator Mr. Ryan McGuckin recently welcomed several beautiful guide dogs, along with their volunteer handlers, on campus to help students learn about the special role

these volunteers and their canine friends play in our world. Mr. McGuckin explained the guide dogs are trained by volunteers to work with people who are military veterans, blind or visually impaired. The dogs help promote independence, enhanced mobility and

companionship to the visually impaired. The Guide Dog Foundation trains volunteer handlers from all over the U.S. and Canada to work with dogs that can then become so valuable to people in need.

Splashes of Hope This morning, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital’s Bellport Primary Care Center unveiled colorful panels and ceiling tiles that were painted by Tiffany Bedell, an artist with Splashes of Hope. Splashes of Hope is a charity dedicated to transforming the environment of hospitals and healthcare centers from ‘clinical to colorful.’ The artwork, installed in two rooms, features Oliver the Otter and Vincent Van Monkey, two signature characters of

Healthy Habits to Combat Stress

Few adults can imagine a life that does not include financial- or work-related stress. But there are ways to combat stress that can benefit people’s longterm health and improve their presentday quality of life.

Stress has an immediate and potentially long-term effect on the human body. Though it’s a natural response to both good and bad experiences, stress, when chronic, can produce a host of negative consequences that greatly diminish one’s quality of life. Chinese Culture As a culmination to their multi-week study on China, Academy Street Elementary School thirdgrade students celebrated their newfound knowledge during a weeklong Chinese New Year event. During the study, students learned about

the Chinese culture and country through photographs and written words, including its capital region and how red is the color of good luck. During the celebration, students fashioned paper lanterns, dragon figures and learned to write several Chinese

characters on paper scrolls. They also got a taste for the region by sampling some well-known Chinese dishes and attended an in-school field trip called Go China with presenter Patricia Shih.

Traveling the World Sylvan Avenue Elementary School thirdgrade enrichment classes traveled around the world during a recent research project on Europe. Using various electronic resources, students learned about such locations as Ireland, Spain and Sweden before creating postcards

depicting themselves in some of the country’s famous landmarks. Using computer software, students pasted a picture of themselves standing in front of such places as France’s Eifel Tower. After completing the visual projects, the classes then compared and

contracted the country’s cultures and made inferences about how they compared to their families own. They shared their completed research with the building’s younger students and even mailed their postcards home to their family members.

Signing On Bayport-Blue Point High School seniors Victor Garifo, Alex Wertz and Dylan Ingber have committed to continue their athletic journeys on the collegiate level next fall. The three recently put

pen to paper to commit to three premier postsecondary institutions. Victor will be competing on the Stony Brook University Cross Country team, Alex will join Slippery Rock University’s soccer team and Dylan will become a

part of the football team at Southern Connecticut State University. The Phantoms were congratulated by district officials, family and friends during a special ceremony at the school.

Mentor Recognized Connetquot Central School District’s Justin Paura, a senior on Connetquot High School’s basketball team, spends his time working with elementary school students when he’s not practicing on the court. Last month, Paura spent an afternoon at Edward J. Bosi Elementary School mentoring fifth graders

as part of the “Athletes Helping Athletes” club. The club allows high school athletes to talk to elementary school students about what to expect in middle and high school. Later that night, Paura scored 15 points in his game against Northport High School. Connetquot Central School District partnered

with Molloy College to participate in “Athletes Helping Athletes,” making it the largest chapter of the club in Nassau and Suffolk County with 60 dedicated students taking the pledge to stay away from drugs and alcohol and sharing their experiences with the younger students.
