If so, get your audition DVD or YouTube video submitted now for Long Island’s Got Talent 2017, hosted by the Ward Melville Heritage Organization (WMHO). Created by WMHO’s Youth Corps, the event gives Long Island students the opportunity to show off their talents this spring. It’s open to students 10-17 years of age in

Nassau or Suffolk County who must still be in high school at the time awards are given in November 2017. Talent must be non-professional vocal or musical instrument performances. The entry deadline is March 17th and there is a $25 entry fee. Those who are contacted after submitting their audition will be asked to perform at the first round performance on April 7th at 6:30 p.m. at WMHO’s Educational & Cultural

Center, 97P Main Street in the Stony Brook Village Center. Finalists chosen will also have the opportunity to perform at WMHO’s Sunday Summer Concerts series in July and August and finals will take place on November 3rd, 2017 when the winners will be chosen. And just like that, the snow has melted and signs of spring have begun to sprout here and there, signaling the end of hibernation and the beginning of so many wonderful things in this second season of the year. Of course, we are not completely out of the frozen woods yet; but it certainly is nice to feel the warmth of the sun in the month of February nonetheless. Last year, March brought with it a robin’s nest, complete with four perfect blue eggs, to my grandparents’ house. I often wonder if one of the babies will return this spring to lay its own batch of eggs and continue the line of fuzzy birds born in that backyard. So many wonderful memories took place in that very spot… how fitting that new life

should be born there as well. I recently picked up a bunch of tulips and roses while shopping, deciding that the post-holiday season barrenness of my apartment could use a little splash of color to liven things up. It’s amazing what a bowl of flowers can do to improve the atmosphere of a room… how I do love to snip and arrange fresh blooms in vases on occasion. It’s times like these that I wish I had a real garden of my own to tend; but alas, decks are really only conducive to the standard potted plant. I am certainly looking forward to heading out this spring and exploring the beaches and parks of Long Island as they come back to life. Aside from the exercise these random, meandering strolls encourage, they

also give me the alwayswelcome opportunity to continue to explore my love of photography. It doesn’t matter how many times I have visited a particular place; there is always a new angle to be found, another pretty sight to document. In about a month’s time, my hope is to have my new website up and ready to launch, featuring some of these scenic snapshots from the last several years, perhaps with some prints and calendars available for purchase. In the interim, I have created a public Instagram account, so please feel free to “follow” me @jlynnspj, take a look around and stay tuned for the official launch of my site, www. SnapshotsAndSilhouettes.com. Springtime is the season of beginnings – no harm in getting a head start!

Ensuring Access As part of their environmental education program, Woodhull Elementary School students in the Fire Island School District recently delved into the deceptively basic challenge of obtaining clean drinking water. After learning about the water supply around the

world, and the crisis of clean water accessibility in many areas, students researched solutions in water sanitization and filtration. Applying concepts that they learned, the students were tasked with designing and using their own filters to clean contaminated water. They used microscopes and

were able to determine the quality of the water both before and after. Data from the filtered water is to be submitted to the World Water Monitoring Challenge, a project of the nonprofit environmental group EarthEcho.

Edward J. Bosti Elementary School C-Quest advisors Lisa Manzo and Kevin Keane recently welcomed Mrs. Janet Steiner to the school as an opportunity for the fourth- and fifth-grade students to learn about Chinese culture. As an introduction to traditional Chinese customs, she brought

with her a hand-made “dragon’s head” which is used in traditional New Year celebrations. Due to her extensive knowledge of facts surrounding China, Steiner welcomed questions from C-Quest students about typical foods, forms of entertainment and educational opportunities for children.

Connetquot Central School District’s C-Quest program is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience of the district’s fourth- and fifth-grade students. Based at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, the C-Quest program services the needs of approximately 140 students throughout the district.

Narcan Training Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Mr. Anthony Felicio, Jr. invited Erik Zalewski (MS, EMT-CC) to meet with district teachers on February 8th. Zalewski is a veteran paramedic affiliated with the Emergency Care & Safety Institute, National Safety Council and the American Heart Association. Felicio invited Zalewski to work with district educators on

the use of Narcan, which is used to reverse opioid overdoses. Teachers were taught the symptoms and causes of opioid overdoses, and the proper use of Narcan, or Naloxone, to revive individuals in drug distress. “I would like to thank our teachers for attending the CTA sponsored Narcan training today” said Felicio “If the need ever arises, Connetquot teachers will have the knowledge and

experience that could save a life. I’m proud to say that this is another example of how district educators prepare themselves, to protect the residents of our community.” Felicio thanked the teachers, and Erik Zalewski for taking part is such an important training session. Zalewski is also a high school science teacher, and has authored numerous articles on managing medical emergencies.

children living in CHI’s emergency housing in various locations across Suffolk County. “We are so touched to be selected for the first time to receive these beautiful Valentine’s Day boxes decorated by the elementary school children and made for other children,” said Alexander Roberts, Executive Director of CHI. “It’s a wonderful way to learn about giving back.

The children living in our emergency housing will have a thoughtful gift to enjoy this Valentine’s Day.” The Valentine Box Project originated in the Sachem School District. Students at various grade levels decorate and fill boxes with new items and then donate them to local shelters and not-for-profits to link with a child who matches their age level.

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi delivered opening remarks at the Connetquot High School Model UN competition on Saturday, February 11th, 2017. The event brought together 300 students from 17 schools throughout Long Island and Queens. Model United Nations is an educational simulation and competition during which students represent different member nations on various UN based committees. Choosing from several predetermined topics, student delegates vote on an agenda and argue their nation’s position in this allday exercise of diplomacy and international relations.

Jazz Study

One of the most treasured music genres – jazz – came to life for students at Woodhull Elementary School in the Fire Island School District when they recently attended a concert and presentation on the life of Louis Armstrong at Lincoln Center. At the concert, jazz vocalist Catherine Ellis narrated the life story of Louis Armstrong to an impressive 46, and and honor those who interspersed with relevant attendees have set the goal survived, all while walking performances of the to raise money to support artist’s work, including of raising $80,000. There they toured the modest but luxurious home, listening to Armstrong’s own commentary on the home, the neighborhood and music, taken from his many homemade audio recordings. For lunch the students ate at neighborhood favorite Taqueria Nixtamal, where they placed their orders in Spanish and enjoyed some of the city’s best Mexican fare.

Analyzing Clues

Eighth-grade students enrolled in Keri Trojanowski’s and Shanna Vilbig’s math, science and technology classes at Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School were able to put their recently acquired forensic skills to the test. They investigated the

staged murder crime scene of Assistant Principal Joseph Piombo in the school library. After spending about eight class sessions analyzing DNA, fingerprints, handwriting and hair samples planted at the scene, the students
