St. Mark’s Episcopal Church & Islip Rotary Help Two At-Risk Groups

St. Mark's Episcopal Church and Islip Rotary are feeding the hungry while supporting the struggling local restaurants. Called the South Shore Takeout Project, the two groups are conducting a fundraiser of sorts throughout the South Shore communities, asking people to purchase restaurant gift cards so people can purchase a meal for their families. St. Mark’s will then donate the cards to God’s Provisions, an affiliate of Long Island Cares, an organization that supplies church food pantries, senior communities and shelters throughout Suffolk County. The program is expected to run through the end of March. “The pandemic has wreaked havoc with our economy,” said St. Mark’s rector, the very reverend Richard E. Simpson." People have lost jobs and can barely feed their families. A restaurant gift card will either be a much-needed meal or a treat,” he said, adding that February 17 is also Ash Wednesday and pointed to the Bible story of “the feeding of 5000.” He continued: Restaurant business is down to about 30% of their usual income and relies heavily on takeout or curbside pick-up for revenue. Many are either

closed or due to close.” Said organizer Irene Ross “We’d like the gift cards to be substantial enough to buy full meals; some restaurants have family or catering packages that could feed an entire family for one night (with maybe even some leftovers for another day’s lunch or dinner). She continued: We know everyone is experiencing some level of financial distress with the pandemic, so why not pool your resources with others, whether friends, neighbors, co-workers, local businesses, clubs, etc? If many people chip in, that becomes a big number that can feed an entire family.” The Takeout Project is the brainstorm of Dr. Barbara Bolen of Northport who, over the holidays, was thinking about two at-risk groups: the hungry and struggling restaurants. A Northport restaurant was offering a family meal ($60 to feed four) and she asked the restaurant owner if she knew of a family she could donate a meal to. This led to the idea to involve local food pantries and encourage others to follow suit, and she and her project partner, Carol Crowley, brought in $4000 in just a little over a month. When Barbara indicated

that she was hoping other organizations would join the endeavor, St. Mark’s Episcopal & Islip Rotary jumped at it and will specifically target the South Shore, including Great South Bay, Oakdale, Patchogue. Sayville, Holbrook, Hauppauge and more. Islip Rotary will be joining St. Mark’s with this project. Tender Loving Cats to the Rescue Tender Loving Cats, a non-profit, a Long Island no-kill kitten and cat rescue run entirely by volunteers, experienced a boom in families stepping up to foster kittens and friendly adult cats over the past year due to the pandemic. This led to many more cats and kittens coming into the adoption program from the streets and finding homes. However, the need for foster families is ongoing. “Fostering is fun, rewarding and saves lives,” said Marge Goldin, a volunteer for the organization. “During ‘kitten season’ which runs April through October, Tender Loving Cats and other rescues get more requests for kitten placement than can be handled. But the number of kittens that can be saved is limited only by the number of fosters available.” Tender Loving Cats manages all the medical needs of the cats/kittens and provides assistance and support throughout the process. Once they are old enough and socialized, Tender Loving cats uses social media to find them

forever homes. No cat or kitten is adopted before they are spayed or neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations. Goldin says that Tender Loving Cats is always in need of volunteers to assist in working 2-hour shifts in the two adoption centers that the organization runs out of two PetSmart locations in North Babylon and West Babylon. “This past year has been especially challenging, as the number of homeless cats has risen, whether due to people losing their jobs and not being able to care for their cats anymore or moving to other locations and leaving their cats behind,” Goldin said. “We are stretched to the limit, but we are determined to save as many cats as possible. We have a motto at Tender Loving Cats that we rescue the mistreated, save the injured and love the abandoned and we try to do just that.” Occasionally Tender Loving Cats is faced with situations where cats or kittens have serious medical challenges. Blindness, deafness, injury, illness or special

medication needs present themselves. Recently, as part of a widespread initiative trying to manage the cat population at Hofstra University, a volunteer took on the responsibility to foster a kitten born missing its back legs. The volunteer, Claudia Cannam, a Hofstra law student, is currently looking into getting the kitten a prosthesis. Rescues the mistreat Tender Loving Cats has a Trap-Neuter-Return program that targets the feral cat explosion on Long Island. Help for ferals is available in the form of trap rental and assistance with trapping. The rescue also can offer financial assistance to low income cat parents seeking to neuter their pets. The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon. Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon. From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers. In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you. Below is a list of all of the programs that the BBCC offers. Lend A Helping Hand (LAHH): This unique patient service program provides much needed stress relief for Babylon Township women undergoing treatment for breast cancer and all types of gynecological cancers, as well as their families confronting diagnosis and ensuing treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Some of the services this program offers include house cleaning, transportation to/from medical appointments, financial assistance, child care, massage therapy, meal preparation and more. Pink & Teal Exercise Program: This exercise program is designed to help women regain flexibility, stamina and strength following breast or gynecological surgery and/or

cancer treatment. Clients meet with trained exercise physiologists for one-onone personal training sessions to address their specific physical goals and issues. Gift Of Health & Inspiration (GOHI): The Gift Of Health & Inspiration program includes a free tote bag, which is designed to be a supportive companion to the newly diagnosed cancer patient. The tote bag is filled with items to assist with your mind, body and soul. The items are nurturing, organic and holistic. They are given to patients at Good Samaritan and St. Catherine’s. Scholorship Programs: The BBCC offers scholarships to Babylon Township high school seniors who have had a parent or legal guardian with a personal breast and/ or gynecological cancer history. An essay must be submitted to be in the running for a scholarship! Vision Of Hope Garden (VOHG): There is a VOHG that this coalition started that is located on the southeast corner of Babylon Town Hall in Lindenhurst. Engraved bricks can be purchased in memory or in honor of someone who has battled breast or gynecological cancer and they will be installed in this garden. Bricks are available for engraving and installation at a cost of $50 each. Additionally, the BBCC is holding an Online Psychic Night! Join others for a gallery style reading as Georgia Rose channels messages from the other side!
