Smith Haven Mall And Roosevelt Field To Host ‘ZOMBIES 2’ Events Smith Haven Mall and Roosevelt Field invite the community to “ZOMBIES 2” events, aimed at entertaining and delighting children of all ages. The events will take place at Smith Haven Mall on Saturday, February 15 from 1 to 3 p.m. and Roosevelt Field on Saturday, February 22 from 1 to 3 p.m. For added fun, shoppers can spin the Prize Wheel at Smith Haven Mall’s Guest Services for a chance to win special prizes during the event and enjoy music and additional activities at Roosevelt Field. The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.
They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This year’s 5K event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at Hofstra University, where over 1000 individuals will run, volunteer or spectate to celebrate! Their upcoming spring season will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet! This organization truly makes a difference! Inducted To Honor Society As a result of their commitment, dedication and scholarly achievement, 35 Connetquot High School students were recently inducted into the building’s chapter of Mu Alpha Theta, the National Mathematics Honor Society. Pet Safety Tips For The Winter Season Allstate Offers Tips On Keeping Your Furry Friends Warm This Winter The temperatures are dropping by the day and with that comes snow, ice and other cold weather conditions. While you and your family are most likely prepared for the winter with warm clothing and shovels, what about your pets? Here’s how you can help your furry family members brave the cold and be safe all winter. Keep your pet warm. According to the American
Veterinary Medical Assoc-iation, pets with thick or long hair tend to be more tolerant towards cold weather. If you bring your long-haired pup to the groomer during the winter, consider a simple trim rather than shaving their hair. Short-haired dogs on the other hand get cold fast due to their lack of fur to insulate their body. Head out to your local pet store to buy a sweater or coat to help them stay warm.
Protect their paws from deicing chemicals. Salt and other de-icing chemicals can be harmful to your pet. Prior letting your dog or cat outside consider massaging petroleum jelly or paw-protectant on their paw pads to help prevent any redness and irritation, as recommended by the ASPCA. Winter boots made for pets are also a great alternative. Limit their time out-doors.
The American Kennel Club says that like humans, both dogs and cats are susceptible to frostbite, especially on their earflaps and tails. Limit their play time outside during cold weather spurts. Emergency preparedness for your pets. Power outages are common during winter-related disasters and can be a threat to you and your pet if the weather becomes severe, says AVMA. Create an emergency kit for your
pet in the event of a winter storm or disaster that can lead to a power outage. The emergency kit should include seven days’ worth of water and food per pet, paper towels, waste baggies, blankets, toys and a flashlight with extra batteries. Cold temperatures can impose health risks to your furry friends but taking some precautions can help make winter more enjoyable for you and your pet!
Sachem Students Explore New York City Historic Locations Prior to the winter recess, Sachem High School students in Kristen Cannetti’s College Marketing class and Keith McCaffrey’s Hospitality and Tourism class took a daylong trip exploring several notable locations in New York City. The trip began at Macy’s Herald Square location where students learned how America’s largest store has grown over the last 150 years and how its four-year, $400 million renovation improved the retailer’s
already established infrastructure. Led by a tour guide, students learned about the history of Macy’s, retailing approaches, special events and holiday traditions while exploring each department and floor on the famous wooden escalators. Students then traveled uptown to Radio City Music Hall for a specialized tour where they examined the interior design of the famous venue. Highlights of the tour
included interior design of the magnificent grand foyer, the massive 1.8 million-cubic-foot auditorium, original aluminum statues, eight elegant lounges, the impeccable Roxy Suite, and the lighting booth and projection room. The in-depth tour concluded with a stop in the Rockettes dressing room and a meetand-greet with one of the Rockettes right before she went on to star in the “Christmas Spectacular” show.

Take Your Child to the Library Day is celebrated the first Saturday in February. The goal is to generate public awareness of a library’s valuable resources to its community. The library is an essential educational resource for members offering classes, events, and programs for all ages. On Saturday, February 1, the Connetquot Public Library celebrated in a big way. Families were welcomed with lively music to set a festive mood. Children’s books adorned the table, allowing families to take a moment or two, to pick out a favorite. Program flyers and information were available to help families learn about upcoming
events, but there was much more. Children had their picture taken in front of the green screen with the children’s play area as a backdrop. They enjoyed watching themselves on the screen pretending to play instruments or displaying their balloon creations. Balloon artist Derek Muterspaw, Mr. Poppintwist, entertained the children and created imaginative designs for them to take home. The children enjoyed spending time at the craft table with family and friends and of course, the Library Scavenger Hunt offered a fun and exciting challenge. Each task was designed to familiarize children with the library, from discovering the
location of a book to finding a program they’d like to attend. While there were raffles and prizes, the greatest rewards of visiting the library are measured in smiles and delight. Children’s librarian Cecile Mazza, dressed as Cat in the Hat from Dr. Seuss, along with Children’s Librarian Dina Oliveira, hosted this firsttime event which educated and entertained all who attended. We thank the teen volunteers for their time and assistance. For the youngest patrons who find it hard to leave and the parents who welcome us into their lives, we thank you for taking your child to your library every day.

Options for Community Living, Inc. (Options) is pleased to announce that it has received a $10,000 Community Partner grant from United Way of Long Island. The funding will support programs for Long Islanders in need of affordable supportive housing and case management services. Options assisted more than 2,300 Long Islanders with their housing and service needs last year. “Our programs serve some of the area’s most vulnerable residents. For many, our housing is the first safe and stable home that they have known
in years,” said Yolanda Robano-Gross, Options Executive Director. “We are grateful to United Way for their partnership and for their commitment to creating lasting change that lifts up everyone.” Options provides Medicaid funded comprehensive care management for adults and children with multiple chronic illnesses, serious mental illness, or HIV/AIDS. Housing programs are affordable and provide specialized support to help people struggling with illness or disability to lead stable, more independent lives. Additional home and
community-based case management services help program participants improve their health and remove barriers that prevent retention in care and treatment. “We couldn’t do the work that we do without our community partner agencies and the contributions they make to the residents of Long Island,” said Theresa A. Regnante, President and CEO of United Way of Long Island. “By providing funding to these organizations, it shows that they meet the highest standards of excellence in the not-for-profit sector.”
