For the 46th consecutive year, Northwell Health employees gathered to honor the teachings and vision of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The ceremony, held at North Shore University Hospital’s Rust Auditorium, was simulcast to other Northwell facilities across the New York/ metro area. This year’s keynote speaker was Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, president of UMBC (The University of Maryland, Baltimore County) and a child leader in the civil rights movement, who was featured in Spike Lee’s 1997 documentary, Four Little Girls, the story of the 1963 bombing of Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church. His presentation focused on the importance of inspiring young people to take action. Dr. Hrabowski spoke to students who had been invited to the event saying: “Each of us ifthe product of
our childhood experiences. Think of it…what you do right now could determine what you do in the future.” He then recounted his memories of hearing Dr. King speak for the first time as a 12 year-old boy in Birmingham. Following the tragic bombing at the 16th Street Church, he said he was determined to join other young students in a peaceful march through the streets of Birmingham. But first, he sought his parents’ permission to march. “At first, they were against it. But the next day, my father gave his permission,” Dr. Hrabowski said. “They told me they prayed about it, but in the end, they supported me.” That support from family and community is a cornerstone of his concept of empowering young people “On a day when we celebrate the achievements of Dr. King,” he said, “I would encourage our
young people to dream big. Dream about the possibilities… decide what you want to do in life. And then, think about what it takes to reach that dream. What I took away from the [civil rights] movement was the importance of dreaming about the possibilities,” he said. “Children have an enormous capacity to think and act. That’s what we want parents and teachers to remember.” A noted researcher and author, Dr. Hrabowski’s research and publications focus on science and math education, with emphasis on minority participation and performance. He was recently named by President Obama to chair the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans. His latest book is Holding Fast to Dreams: Empowering Youth from the Civil Rights Crusade to STEM Achievement.

RETIREE HONORED - After serving Suffolk County for 48 years in the Police Department Detective Lieutenant Thomas O’Heir has decided to retire effective February 2nd. In order to honor him for his service, Legislator Leslie Kennedy presented him with a proclamation with the County Seal fixed upon it to recognize his long-time service to the community. Detective Lieutenant O’Heirs’ long and accomplished career began in 1968 after graduating the Police Academy; Thomas O’Heir was initially assigned to the 1st Precinct. Through the years, he has been assigned to various precincts throughout the County and has advanced through the ranks. He now retires as a Detective Lieutenant from the 4th Precinct in Hauppauge.

An Ode to Driving on LI By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m willing to go out on a limb to say that even those who would count winter as their favorite season do not enjoy driving in the snow and icy conditions it brings, especially if they live on Long Island. Just the other morning, after a surprise helping of the white stuff, I was reminded of the joys of a morning commute in about six inches of slush… The privilege of driving behind those with an aversion to cleaning off their rooftops and back windows… The honor of inching behind drivers who seem to think that to surpass 20 mph would be criminal… The thrill of testing out my brakes every car length or so, as people ahead come to a screeching halt due to…what, exactly? I couldn’t tell you.
Sure, I understand the anxiety which can come from being forced to travel in such conditions – to a degree. But when a few select drivers and their inability to, you know, drive are the cause? Well, that’s where I lose patience. I’m pretty sure they teach this stuff in driver’s ed, in defensive driving courses – or in the big old handbook known as common sense. It’s not rocket science people. #1. You need to see the road, so clean windows and mirrors are a must. #2. The rest of us need to see the road as well, so having an 18-inch clump of snow fly off the back of someone’s car into your windshield… not the most conducive to aforementioned point. #3. Brakes do not respond well on wet pavement, snow or ice – so it is best to
refrain from slamming on them for no good reason. Simply letting up on the gas pedal and, oh yes, steering can work wonders. These are just a few of the more important points I encountered on my journey to work, on a 20-mile straight stretch of road with no fewer than a dozen or so drivers wreaking havoc. We’ve been fortunate this winter, but that’s not to say we have been – or will be – spared completely. A few more morning or evening rush hours like that, and we’ll all be counting down the days to spring. Phoenix Award Gala Set North Shore Horse Rescue & Sanctuary (NSHR), a local ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) non-profit horse shelter, is hosting its Second Annual Phoenix Award Gala on Friday, March 4th, at 7 p.m. This year’s event will honor the Novak Family, owners of the Long Island Game Farm – Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo (LIGF), for their outstanding work in promoting prevention, health, humane practice and advocacy for all animals. The Novak Family and the NSHR Board of Directors invite all Long Island animal lovers to join
them for the event, which is taking place at Giorgio’s, located at 100 Fox Hill Drive in Baiting Hollow, New York. This Annual Gala aims to raise the additional funds necessary for year-round care of its permanent and fostered horses. The organization also welcomes volunteers of all ages and experience levels, though anyone age 14 to 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and younger horse lovers may apply to volunteer as part of a group-based day project through youth clubs or school classes. LIGF President Diane Novak and her daughter
Melinda Novak, Vice President of LIGF, are being honored for their animal education efforts through programs at the zoo, as well as for their support of NSHR. “We are truly thrilled to be honored with this recognition and award,” says Melinda Novak. “Everyone at the park works especially hard to inspire educational values for our visitors – young and old – and to maintain the safety and health of our animals. NSHR relies solely on its 100 percent volunteer base to operate the facilities each day and support of its continued
mission of saving the lives of abandoned, abused and unwanted horses, many of which are up for slaughter. The ultimate mission of the organization is to find loving, informed homes for these gentle giants, while also committing to allowing permanent residents to live out their lives in a safe, stress-free environment. Funded in part by grants from the ASPCA, the farm is also verified by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries. D-Day Vet Visits Pearl Harbor, and plunged America into World War II. He soon enlisted in the United States Army as an infantryman. On June 6th, 1944, he was among the thousands of allied troops which landed on the beaches of Normandy, France. Sam told students of his experiences and feelings being away from home. He talked about his respect for Great Britain. He remembered seeing General Kermit Roosevelt, son of President Theodore Roosevelt, on the Normandy Beach and his leadership that encouraged the troops to advance against the
enemy. He discussed surviving injuries during the siege at Bastogne, his joy at America’s eventual defeat of the Nazis, and his horrors he saw when his outfit liberated one of the concentration camps which held Jewish prisoners. Mr. Stahlman also spoke about the courage of American women in and out of the military during the war. Mrs. Zalewski’s class was moved by Mr. Stahlman’s history and impressed when he showed them his two Silver Stars and two Purple Heart medals.

Bosti Elementary School Principal Dr. Gail Cholden recently invited faculty and staff who had donated money to the school’s 2nd annual Jeans for the Troops fundraiser to take a group picture. Fundraiser participants wore jeans to school to show support for United States military. Money raised for the ‘Jeans for the Troops’ program helps returning veterans in the area of employment, eliminating homelessness and assisting in securing benefits. Letter from the Library... As we begin 2016, the Connetquot Public Library wishes all of our patrons a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. For many of us, the New Year signifies hope and change for the future. The library looks forward to a year of new and exciting programs for all ages, programs to educate, enlighten and entertain. With New Year’s resolutions on the cusp of realization, the library is more than happy to help you achieve all your wellness goals. From cooking to fitness, informed discussion to quiet deliberation, the library has something for everyone. On Wednesday, January 20th, Barbara Bonavoglia hosted a program on Gluten Free Cooking. She discussed her 13 years of experience
cooking a gluten free diet that began with a diagnosis of Celiac disease and her subsequent journey to a healthier life. She provided recipes and recommended restaurants with a gluten free menu. Through trial and error, Barbara has learned to prepare a number of dishes including desserts that are not only delicious but safe for gluten free diets. “The part can never be well unless the whole is well,” Plato. There are many roads on the path to wellness. Some begin with a healthy outlook, the adoption of a healthy lifestyle including what we eat and what we think. The library offers various types of exercise classes to keep the body flexible and agile. Begin with Easy Tai Chi to help
improve balance and ease stress. Senior Stretch and Flex and Senior Fitness classes include sitting and standing exercises and light weights with a pace for beginners or experienced. Yoga classes emphasize posture, meditation and breathing. For those looking for a high energy, cardio aerobic workout, Zumba combines diverse musical rhythms and an upbeat tempo. Zumba begins on Tuesday, February 16th, at 6 p.m. Exercise classes are open to all Connetquot Library card holders. For those with health insurance questions, the HICAP (Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance Program) Volunteer helps to answer questions about Medicare, Medicaid and

Epic. A trained volunteer from this federally funded program from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services visits the library once a month. Appointments can be made by contacting the Adult Reference Desk. The Suffolk County Senior Advocate is also available every other month to meet with persons 60 years or over or their caregivers to provide information and counseling. No appointment is necessary. Periodic Blood Pressure screenings are also offered every other month by a registered nurse from the Visiting Nurse Service. The next one is on Tuesday, February 16th from 10 to 11 a.m. The library has an extensive collection of cookbooks for those
health and wellness, LGBT topics, suicide prevention and bullying. The girls then organized and hosted a seminar where parents and children could obtain information about these issues and the organizations that exist for anyone in need of support. Sachem Kicks Off Sachem High School students attended this year’s kickoff event for the 2016 FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition, sponsored by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) and hosted by Stony Brook University.
Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently presented eight young women from Troop 1177 with their Girl Scout Silver Awards at a special ceremony commemorating their achievements. The girls worked individually and as a group to become educated on social issues and pressures facing young residents in the Islip community, including self-harm,
looking for healthy alternatives in the kitchen. From different ways to use herbs and spices to spicing up vegetables and sweetening desserts, our cooking classes offer an array of ideas and recipes. Some of these programs are for district residents only and require registration, but you will have some fun and go home with healthy and delicious menu ideas. The library also hosts some programs that are open to all in the community. The library also offers discussion programs to improve wellness and achieve inner peace. From adult coloring to knitting circles, interactive discussion or passive listening wherever you may find your peace, the library is

After the presentation, each team received a kit of parts, which they will use along with other materials to
build a 120-pound robot in support of the program’s STRONGHOLD™ theme and challenge. The 51 teams set to participate in the competition have six weeks to construct the robot before the main event at Hofstra University on April 1st and 2nd.

James Wilson Young Middle School eighthgrade technology students recently turned into airplane engineers during an interactive building project. Using WhiteBox learning software, students worked in small teams to design,
test and build glider airplanes. After learning about such concepts as thrust, drag, lift efficiency ratio and the theory of fight, students constructed their gliders using computers. They tested the planes virtually, making adjustments along the way,
before eventually printing the templates for their design. After cutting out and assembling the planes, students each had the chance to take them for a test flight in the school’s gym.
Day of Acceptance Connetquot School District’s John Pearl Elementary School recently brought together students and staff to celebrate the school’s growing international program with International Day of Acceptance, a day set aside to celebrate the lives of people with disabilities
and the prevention of bullying at schools. During the event, students sang songs, read poems, related stories about their experiences with acceptance and provided examples of how to help people feel included. Students papered the

of handprints and the title Freedom Hands, as well as thoughtful mobiles which included Dr. King’s famous words: “I have a dream.” Students included their thoughts and dreams, as well as messages of kindness, friendship,

On Tuesday, November 10th Idle Hour Elementary School Principal Mrs. Sandra Rubin, and YFS Coordinator Mrs. Lara McNally welcomed students, staff and family members to the Oakdale campus for a concert to honor community veterans. Mrs. McNally explained that “… community veterans, family members, students and faculty were invited to this year’s celebration as a tribute to our veterans, and to thank them for their service.” Twenty-five veterans were honored by the Idle Hour Elementary School community. Each
Idle Hour grade level sang a different patriotic song, as a slide show of veteran photos played. Students read words of appreciation,and thanks to the veterans, and their proud family members. The name of each attending veteran was read, and a related grandchild, son or daughter was given a carnation and thank you card to be presented to that veteran. Connetquot Board of Education President Mrs. Milynn Argulis and Superintendent Mrs. Lynda G. Adams joined the faculty, staff, and students in recognizing America’s veterans for their bravery, and sacrifice.
Mrs. Peggy Dinkelman, a recently retired Connetquot HS teacher and, current Vice President of Long Island’s Blue Star Moms was also on hand to accept a collection of supplies to be sent to troops in Afghanistan. More than 300 personal care items, such as toothbrushes, paste, soap, etc., were collected by the students and presented to Mrs. Dinkelman to be forwarded. Following the hour-long ceremony, a reception was held in the school’s library for the veterans and their proud family members.
Chinese Culture Connetquot Central School District’s C-Quest advisors, Mrs. Lisa Manzo and Mr. Kevin Keane, recently welcomed guest speaker Mrs. Steiner to the Edward J. Bosti Elementary School Campus. Mrs. Steiner shared her extensive experience of traveling throughout
China and her knowledge of the history and culture of China and its people. Mrs. Manzo and Mr. Keane worked with students as they learned key terms. The students created traditional art projects as they asked questions about Chinese foods, forms of entertainment and
educational opportunities for children. Since its inception almost 30 years ago as Connetquot’s Gifted and Talented curriculum, today’s C-Quest program continues the mission of enriching the academic experiences of its 4th and 5th grade students.
