Fresh Air summers are filled with children running barefoot through the grass, gazing at starfilled skies and swimming for the first time. This summer, join volunteer host families in Suffolk County, and open your heart and home to a Fresh Air child. Each summer, thousands of children from New York City’s low-income communities visit suburban, rural and small town communities along the East Coast and Southern Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program. Harlen, age 9, has visited the Tornatore family for two summers. Host dad

Albert shared, “Harlen has definitely learned to try new things. I remember our first summer. He was nervous but by the end of the first week, Harlen and my son were having adventures and having so much fun. We went to the aquarium, amusement park, and the kids love the beach.” “My kids get so excited when they get to see Harlen. This summer we went to a drive-in movie, and we were all in the backseat with blankets, pillows and popcorn, snuggled together. Harlen is simply part of our family,” says host mom Allyson.

The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from seven to 18 years old, who live in New York City. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. The Suffolk Academy of Law leads the way as the Suffolk County Coordinator for the New York State Bar Association Mock Trial for High School Students. The Mock Trial Program is co-sponsored by The New York Bar Foundation, where high school students have the opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of civil/criminal law and courtroom procedures. Thousands of students participate each year. The objectives of the tournament are to teach students about ethics, civility and professionalism in the practice of law. The competition promotes the students understanding of the law, court procedures and the legal system, and aims to improve proficiency in basic life skills, such as listening, speaking, reading and reasoning. I ended last week’s column hoping that this month of February would bring with it a little more sunshine into all of our lives… While this is a nice sentiment, of course we know that life does not always work this way, and there are plenty of storm clouds to weather along the way. This just reinforces the notion that we must all take the time to appreciate the little things in life, the special moments, those people we love and the many memories we share, as we simply never know when they will become precisely that… just a faded memory among many others. After the passing of my grandfather nearly a year ago, and the subsequent sale of the

house that my grandparents had called home for more than 50 years, there was obviously much cleaning out and sorting through mementos to be done. In some ways, this was the most difficult task of all. To me, nearly everything held some sort of significance, some deep emotional attachment which evoked so many precious recollections of years gone by. Of course, these are just objects, material possessions which hardly make up for the loss of the person they are associated with. But the photographs… those are truly special. And boy, are there photographs. I, being of the slightly OCD nature, coupled with my fervent love of all things photography, volunteered to take on the initial task

of sorting through and cataloging the boxes upon boxes of albums, envelopes full of developed photos and a few dozen or so frames and collages. Several months later, I’ve barely made a dent in the process. But it doesn’t matter. There’s no rush where memories are concerned. They should be carefully recollected, and savored. Every single photograph tells a story; and every story unlocks a treasure trove of feelings and emotions – some happy, some sad, some wistful… all meaningful in their own respective ways. And winter, while it may not bring a lot of sunshine into our lives, is the perfect time to take a moment to appreciate all the memories that do.

John Pearl Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District recently came together to celebrate the International Day of Acceptance, a day set aside throughout the world to celebrate diversity, life and the lives of the disabled. Throughout the course of the day, students sang songs and enjoyed a presentation by a multicultural dance troupe, which was

arranged by the John Pearl PTA Cultural Arts committee. The dance group performed a number of routines that included eye-catching costumes and music from around the world. Students were in awe of the ballet dancers, their athleticism and elegance. Prior to the event, John Pearl Elementary School Principal Susan White addressed the students and told them that January

20th is an important day not only for celebrating the International Day of Acceptance, but that it also started the term of office for the new president of the United States. The symbol used to represent the International Day of Acceptance is the “Wheelchair Heart,” which was seen throughout the halls of John Pearl Elementary School.

Seventh-grade students at Ronkonkoma Middle School enrolled in Heidi Edmonds’ and Jennifer Pluth’s English classes recently communicated with South Sudanese “Lost Boy” Daniel Pach, one of three subjects of the 2006 documentary “God Grew Tired of Us.” As they had recently completed reading Linda Sue Park’s novel “A Long Walk to Water” and viewed the documentary, the students were inspired

to learn more about the Sudanese culture, the effects of the country’s civil war and the ongoing issues dealing with lack of healthcare and clean water in South Sudan. It was this strong desire to learn more about the subject that inspired them to connect with Mr. Pach via a videoconference. During their conversation, Mr. Pach spoke candidly about his transition to American

culture and the struggles of growing up during the Sudanese Civil War. “My life experiences have made me strong,” Mr. Pach told the students. “I am now more strong, more calm and more knowledgeable because of my experience. When I first came to America, I had nothing – but now I have clothes, a job, and am able to go to school to learn more English.”

Sayville High School Junior Abi Newman had a great idea. In December, after reading a short article about PRAAT (Patchogue Rotary Animal Assisted Therapy) and the advantages of pet therapy to relieve stress and anxieties, she immediately recognized its value. “Most students wrestle with the monster of anxiety, especially during testing,” Sayville High School Social Work Elizabeth Quinlan explained. “Abi decided to explore an idea that had the potential of diminishing the power of her wellacquainted adversary while benefiting all of her high school peers.” During her December break, Abi learned about the organization. “PRAAT is a non-profit organization affiliated with Patchogue Rotary that provides pet

therapy in many diverse locations (i.e., L.I. school districts, colleges, hospitals nursing homes etc.). Their certified therapy dogs and accompanying volunteers (some owners, some not) facilitate safe and rewarding interactions between dogs and those who need a strong dose of unconditional support.” After considering their mission, Abi called and made an appointment to meet the people and pets as well as to inquire about their availability during midterms in January. Abi became “confident that canine visits would undermine the anxiety that she and her peers experienced during exam week,” and sought support from Ms. Quinlan. Ultimately the decision was Principal Ron Hoffer’s, but Abi had done her

homework and brought the information and necessary documentation to assure him that the safety of all the students at Sayville High School would be upheld. Abi’s inspired concept became a reality when six “wagging-tailed supporters” came to Sayville High School during exam week. “Loving, cuddly affectionate furry friends spent five hours over two days transforming anxious, worried students into relaxed, happy, chatty kids before and after taking their midterms,” Ms. Quinlan noted with delight, adding her personal praise. “Kudos to Abi Newman, for thinking outside the box and for giving her time and efforts so all students could reap the benefits of our tail-wagging, loyal friends!”

Two Sayville sophomores in the Mr. Cross’ Advanced Computer Graphics class responded to a design assignment with a banner idea - literally! Will Folks and Allison Neumeyer designed and created two 8’ by 16’ banners in-house to highlight the recent good news about their high school. Again this year, Sayville High School was featured in Newsweek as one of America’s Top High Schools in 2016, ranking 239th out of 15,819 schools nationwide In addition this

year for - a fifth consecutive year - Sayville High School has been named a New York State Reward School. Such accolades deserved attention and the students approached their assignment with this in mind. As they were both proficient in Adobe Illustrator CS4, Will and Allison furthered their design skills while working on their class projects. The results were impressive. Mr. Cross and High School Principal Ron Hoffer were delighted that Will and Allison’s banners

could be displayed outdoors and above the High School gymnasium for everyone to see. Mr. Cross added his specific compliments for the assistance given by Sayville’s Buildings and Grounds Assistant Superintendent and the High School custodian. “It was a pleasure working with Stephen Koepper and Rob Selkirk as they were instrumental with framing and installing the banners at the High School.” Most of all, congratulations, Will and Allison, for your banner ideas!

Taking Care of Teddy

Mr. Anthony Felicio, Jr., President of the Connetquot Teacher’s Association (CTA), met with officers of the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children (CFAC) on January 19th to provide support for their upcoming Gala and Fashion Show. This annual event helps to raise funds to be used in providing school, community and teacher financial grants that directly support the children of the Connetquot community. “On behalf of the entire membership I am pleased to present this $2,500 check to CFAC President Tara West,” said Felicio. “The CTA renews its support of this wonderful organization which continues to ‘give back’ to our schools, and sustains our students, and

teachers. Without the financial support of the CFAC, special programs and equipment, for our students, and classroom training for our teachers, would not be available. I hope this CTA contribution will help continue their fantastic work.” The Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children (CFAC) Community Gala and Fashion Show is scheduled for Thursday, March 9th, 2017 at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook. There will be two Honorees, and six ‘Community Stars’ to be recognized. A record-breaking 350 guests attended the 2016 gala, that recognized Peter Leis and Joseph Maniaci. Foundation supporters who attended the gala had the opportunity to cheer for fellow teachers

that modeled classic outfits, and to continue to support the work of the CFAC. Over the years the organization has provided over $130,000 in school, community and teacher financial grants. These awards help purchase equipment and supplies, support special student assemblies, and provide training that directly benefits the students of the Connetquot community. Fifth-graders at Cherokee Street Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District were recently visited by the Connetquot High School’s Athletes Helping Athletes Club for an opportunity to engage in leadership and team building activities. Throughout the visit,

each athlete spoke to the younger students about how they learned to believe in themselves, and always continued to work to reach their goals. Additionally, they took time to explain the many advantages of participating in extracurricular programs, such as music,

cheerleading and sports. The Connetquot High School Athletes Helping Athletes Club consists of more than 60 serviceminded students who pledge to stay away from alcohol and drugs, and to share their experiences with elementary school students.

Swearing In Tom Cilmi. KIC is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to a clean and beautiful Islip Township. Officers and Commissioners are

volunteers who represent their hamlet to KIC and lead projects involving litter, recycling, beautification, graffiti, education and other quality of life issues.

Connetquot High School, in partnership with the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children, recently hosted the fun and physically-active 5K Zombie Walk event. Throughout the race, “zombie” volunteers attempted to steal the participants three colored flags before they were able

to successfully complete 10 laps around the halls of the high school. Those who lost all flags before completing the laps were deemed members of the “zombie” community. To this date, district events have raised more than $130,000 for CFAC, which provides financial grants to teachers and district schools to purchase

equipment and supplies, support special assemblies and training that directly benefits the students of the Connetquot Central School District.

Fifth-grade students at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District were recently visited by local author and Connetquot High School graduate, Patrice Domozych, to hear about her children’s book, her love for writing and some tips on how to strengthen their own writing. Mrs. Domozych’s book,

titled “Hope is Here to Stay,” tells the story of 12 year-old Lauren Loose’s battle with pediatric cancer, and her efforts to help others fighting the same illness. Using illustrations, a slide show presentation and her book, Mrs. Domozych talked about Lauren, now 20 years old, and the other children who face serious challenges in their lives.

All proceeds from the book sales benefit the Lauren’s First and Goal Foundation, which was founded in Lauren Loose’s name and provides financial and emotional support for families whose children are affected by pediatric cancer. To this day, more than $800,000 has been raised toward the goal of finding a cure for the disease.
