Those changes will very likely be reflected in the report card, which will not only assess a student’s detailed content knowledge, but also his or her demonstrated understanding of higherlevel concepts and more. Pay attention to these marks, as they are a significant measure of students’ performance moving forward with the new standards. Progress toward mastery of grade-level standards is the new norm. While every school district may be different, parents across the nation can expect report cards—particularly in the elementary grades— to measure students’ growth over the course of the school year, not just the term for which they are evaluated. As such, it is important that you understand the different progress indicators and what any numeric codes used actually mean

If your child’s teacher did not provide an explanation of the report card format that is being used, be sure to request one so you are clear on how your child is being evaluated. To all you high school students out there: we did it! The school year is officially half over. Midterms are done, and the third quarter has begun. As we are in the home stretch, it is crucial for students of every grade level to start - or finish - looking at colleges. Freshmen, although still young, should focus on maintaining a solid grade-point-average. Sophomores should be preparing to take the SAT or ACT. Juniors need to be primarily concerned with creating a list of schools that they wish to apply to. Seniors, like myself, are now waiting to hear back from different colleges.

Although underclassmen may feel like they have all the time in the world, it is crucial to get an early start. Trust me, that time goes quickly. In addition to keeping up one’s grades, it is also important to set up interviews. For many borderline students, these interviews give them the opportunity to convey their passions more effectively. A student gets to speak directly with an alumnus of the specific institution. An interview is a valuable asset in making your interest known. For instance, just a few weeks ago, I had an interview with Dr. Vitagliano, the proprietor of Smile With Style

Orthodontics in West Islip. As a graduate of Duke University, Dr. Vitagliano is still heavily involved in the happenings both on campus and in the admissions office. During my interview, I made it known that Duke University was one of my first choice institutions. Hopefully, Dr. Vitagliano saw my interest and conveys it to the admissions board. This process can be inﬂuential in affording a student access to a specific institution of higher learning, but grades bear much more weight! Make sure to keep your grades up, take standardized tests, apply to college and schedule an interview!

On January 19th, New York City FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), along with School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) presented the FIRST Tech Challenge Qualifying Tournament at Hewlett High School in Hewlett, New York. Twenty teams from Long Island and the metropolitan New York area took part in the daylong competition. The FTC is a program through FIRST, which is an organization that focuses on teaching children and young

adults STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) skills through stimulating robotics competitions. The FTC tournament requires students in grades seven through twelve to design, build, and program a robot to compete with in an alliance format against other teams. Each year, a different themed challenge is presented to those who participate in the tournament. The challenge was “FTC® BLOCK PARTY! SM,” in which Alliances of two teams programmed their robots to place plastic blocks onto pendulum

goals. During each twoand-a-half minute match, teams also had to raise their team flag up a flagpole, elevate their robots off the ground using a platform pull-up bar, and finish the match with a balanced pendulum to earn extra points. Following the tournament, an award ceremony was presented by the FIRST judges. Different teams won trophies for various categories that represented a range of qualities, such as teamwork, creativity, and inspiration.

Dr. Donald Murphy, director of Mathematics and Information Systems, Hauppauge School District, and Marc Licht, director of Technology, Mineola UFSD, presented the initial YouTube library of the Common Core Video Help Initiative Project (ccvidhelp) to more than 40 teachers and administrators representing 20 Long Island school districts on January 23rd in the Hauppauge School District Board of Education Room. ccvidhelp is a grass roots initiative created to provide students and parents with the support they need for Common Core mathematics in grades K through 9. ccvidhelp started organically through conversations between Dr. Murphy and Mr. Licht

who recognized the desperate need among parents for Common Core math module resources (support) to help their children at home with the new math curriculum. While Hauppauge and many other Long Island school districts have held Parent Information Nights, Dr. Murphy and Mr. Licht decided to collaborate and invite other Long Island school districts to join in and to build a library of support videos that would be: • Aligned to the NYS common core math curriculum, and specifically, the modules available at engageny.org • Publically available to all students, parents, etc. • Easily searched on iPads, PCs, phones, etc. • Linked to other

better manage their own well-being, while assisting loved ones. Caregivers will be taught how to reduce stress, improve self-confidence, better communicate feelings and locate helpful resources. Advisory Panel Appointee Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay III recently appointed Sayville Chamber Past-President and Director Kay Cameron to the Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization Citizen’s Advisory Panel, making this the first appointment of Lindsay’s legislative career. Kay has served on this panel under the late Presiding Officer William J. Lindsay since 2006. “Kay is a remarkable person who has fought to protect our most vital downtowns for the past eight years while also continuing the success of her own business in downtown Sayville,” said Legislator Lindsay III. “Kay’s economic insight and her passion to preserve and reenergize the culture of our Suffolk County communities have made her an ideal candidate for

this post.” Kay began her career in public service as a Registered Nurse, working in numerous hospitals until 1985. In 1982, she established her then parttime jewelry business with only five staffers. The Eve Of Excitement? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan All the hype, all the anticipation, all leading to this year’s, ahem, “Big Game”… and for what? Neither New York football team is participating, few locals seem the least bit interested in paying the exorbitant ticket prices to attend and, irony of ironies, barring a lastminute change in the weather forecast, the potential for a nor’easter over the weekend has been downgraded to, um, 46º and partly cloudy. Personally, I have never been to a professional football game. I’d like to,

don’t get me wrong, but the idea of tailgating in the freezing cold – eh, not so appealing. Add to that the fact that my only NFL rooting interest lies in New England (yes, I know, blasphemy), and I have never actively pursued acquiring tickets to a game to this point. Of course, a few weeks back, when the Patriots still stood a chance of making it to the end, the thought briefly crossed my mind. Wouldn’t that be an incredible first football experience? Ah, but it was not to be. Instead, I, like millions of others, will be watching

the game from the comfort of my own home, on the couch, surrounded by snacks. I rarely have much of a rooting interest, but the broadcast is usually good for a few classic commercials and a fairly entertaining Halftime performance. We, as a collective society, will watch, discuss the highlights for a few days and then promptly forget who won, who even played, until next year when the football season revs up once again. And so it goes. On to more important things – like how many days ‘til pitchers and catchers report?

From learning traditional phrases to interesting facts about the country’s geography, Academy Elementary School third-grade students were immersed in studying China during a Go China workshop presented by Patricia Shih. During the workshop, the students learned

aspects of the country’s history, language, music, art, geography and culture. The students learned how to speak 99 Chinese words, the significance of the Chinese New Year and which colors and animals were symbolic of the emperor and empress. Additionally, the students had the chance to

Mr. Warburton advised the students to draw and to keep their drawings in a notebook that they could then refer back to at a later date. He also emphasized the importance of doing something you love.

Edward J. Bosti Elementary School 5th graders recently completed the school’s annual Cirque du Jour Project to the delight of family and friends. Afterwards these students took the time to write letters of thanks to those thoughtful professionals that made the circus experience so enjoyable. As part of the Cirque du Jour Project (CDJ), Bosti students worked with their physical education teachers, Mrs. West and Mr. Oldis, and members of the CDJ to learn a variety of circus acts. According to

veteran 5th grade teacher Mrs. Joanna McManaman, “The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Now they are reflecting on this magic memory as they articulate thanks to facilitators, PE teachers, Dr. Cholden and the members of the Bosti PTA.” Youngsters displayed their own personalities as they learned to work as clowns, escapte artists, juggler, stilt walkers and masters of the Diablo Stick! The circus program is designed to motivate students to participate more fully in physical education, and cultural

arts activities. The students performed during the day for their classmates, and later in the evening for family and friends. Congratulations to Bosti’s talented 5th graders for putting on their own version of Greatest Show On Earth in Bohemia!

HEALTHY FIELD TRIP - Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School fourth grade students recently welcomed a visit from professional fitness trainer Josh Manda. Manda spoke to the students about the benefits of good nutrition and exercise by teaching them about the different food groups and demonstrating several fun and age-appropriate exercises such as popcorn pushups. The students also enjoyed a variety of healthy snack alternatives including seaweed chips during the in-school field trip. CULTURAL LESSON - Connetquot Central School District’s (CCSD) Edward J. Bosti Elementary School fifth grade C-Quest students recently learned about German language, culture and arts during an interactive lesson with CCSD teaching assistant Sandra Fagerlund, who was born and raised in Germany. Ms. Fagerlund taught the students German phrases, introduced them to popular German foods and forms of entertainment, and also talked about the German school system. The program is part of an on-going series in the foreign language curriculum, designed to motivate students to explore, understand and appreciate other cultures.

Taking A Virtual Tour

Mrs. Kim Licato, Connetquot School District Chair of the ESL/ LOTE (languages other than English) department joined students and teachers at the Edward J. Bosti Elementary School on December 5th, for an innovative lesson, and virtual tour, of Bella Italia! Connetquot High School Italian language teacher Mrs. Kirstin Fusco brought along several of her students to work with Bosti’s C-Quest students as they learned about the history and culture of Italy. Mrs. Lisa Manzo, EJ Bosti Elementary School C-Quest Advisor welcomed Mrs. Fusco and her students as they sang,

spoke and played games in Italian! The students worked so well with the C-Quest students as they learned, not only the language, but the culture and geography of Bella Italia. Among the lessons the high school students shared with their new C-Quest friends were activities dealing with fashion, clothes shopping, and reading about Italian food treats! Ms. Fusco explained organization of the European Union to the students as well as the common currency (Euro) system used throughout Europe. Mrs. Manzo thanked Ms. Fusco and her students for visiting,

and sharing the wonderful history and culture of the beautiful, energetic, exciting nation of Italy! Connetquot’s C-Quest program is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience of the district’s 4th and 5th grade students. Based at the Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, the C-Quest program services the needs of approximately 140 students throughout the district. Started 27 years ago as Connetquot’s ‘Gifted and Talented’ curriculum, today’s C-Quest program continues the mission of enriching the experiences of its students.

Welcoming Santa

Santa Claus, also known as Old Saint Nick, visited with pre-school students at Connetquot’s Arthur Premm School in Oakdale, on December 19th. According to reports, the pre-schoolers, teachers and TA’s, were dressed in their colorful pajamas when they heard sleigh bells

and found that Santa had come to visit! A very good friend of Connetquot’s Assistant Superintendent Mr. Lou Malerba (wink, wink), Santa talked to the youngsters about the upcoming holiday, and distributed little treats to each. The happy children had

an opportunity to suggest what they might like to see under their tree on Christmas morning, or what they’d like for mom or dad! Santa brought a smile to the face of each Arthur Premm students, as he wished the children and their parents a safe, enjoyable holiday season.

On December 19th Cherokee Street Elementary School Principal Mrs. Bridgette Wilson was joined by members of the Connetquot School District Board of Education (BOE) to recognize students who had earned national attention! Mrs. Cathy Mongiello’s 5th grade students participated in the National Sumdog Math Competition, and finished among the top 15 schools, from among the 3,500 that participated! On top of that, Cherokee’s

5th graders finished FIRST among New York State schools! In brief ceremony at the school, Mrs. Mongiello shared her pride in the class’ outstanding achievement, as she explained the scope of the national competition. Mongiello explained, “Sumdog is a national, online, math and reading platform that utilizes gamification to help students improve their math and reading skills, and promote fluency. The program holds regular

national competitions to give students an opportunity to put their skills to the test.” After her presentation, certificates were presented to each of the students. Participating in the ceremony were BOE VicePresident Leo R. As part of the collaboration between the Learning for Life Program and the Transition Program in the Sayville Public Schools, students have been attending monthly Career Days at the Middle School and High School and interacting with visiting speakers. So far this year, guests who have shared their work and life experiences included a veterinary technician and an emergency planning aide. This month, Career Day welcomed MTA Police Officers John Matarazzo and Tom Merkel who talked about their careers as well as the MTA Safety

Program. During their presentations, many students expressed great interest in the MTA and related fields. With monthly Career Days, students become aware of the variety of existing jobs. They gain insights into job responsibilities so they can make more realistic choices when it comes to career planning. The program also helps students understand why they would need a job, their commitments while employed, and even requirements such as certifications and diplomas for attaining their desired job. With Career Day,

every student learns from experienced personnel the importance of making mature and ethical decisions and dealing responsibly with their decisions. “Career Days can be an exciting day for our students,” explained Claire Rymer, Transition Coordinator at Sayville Public Schools. “They learn a lot about careers and jobs and may even discover something that makes them think a little about their future. But the best outcome of career day is when the student comes home excited about the possibilities.”

MLK Remembrance concluded the lessons by writing acts of kindness on white cutouts of doves as symbols of peace. The children shared their writings with classmates and sang together Michael Jackson’s Heal the World. The paper doves are now hanging in the hallways. On the Friday before the Monday holiday when schools would be closed,

Principal Carolynn Hansen had a surprise for the students; live doves would be released outside the school. Filled with excitement, the children got a close-up look at a live dove before the three remaining would be released by White Wings NY, a local company that provides ceremonial birds for special occasions.

Interim Assistant Superintendent Mrs. Sandra Rubin recently welcomed students, family and friends to the second annual ‘Dancing Classrooms’ performance at Connetquot’s Idle Hour Elementary School. On Friday, December 13th, Idle Hour’s 4th grade students took pride in demonstrating the ballroom dancing skills they had been practicing in Physical Education classes for the past month. According to Idle Hour YFS Director Mrs. Lara McNally “Students spent two physical education classes per week learning the Meringue, Fox Trot, Rumba, Swing, Tango and Viennese Waltz. Our 4th graders were taught to dance gracefully around the room and to have fun!” Dancing Classrooms is a non-profit organization founded in 1994. It’s mission is to build social awareness, confidence and self-esteem in children through the practice of

social dance. According to their website “The dance is a tool for getting the children to break down social barriers, learn about honor and respect, treat others carefully and improve & accept others.” One parent said that the the children “looked so grown up,” while another graded their dancing skills as “awesome, with a score of 10!” The last part of this afternoon program called for the students to go into the audience and bring a parent out on the floor to share a dance. It was obvious by the end of the show that the program’s goal of teaching pride, confidence and respect had been achieved by these talented Idle Hour students!

Consumers Should Take Advantage Of Free Credit Reports (NAPSI)—The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same

time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million free credit reports

provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report.

According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free credit report from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus, Equifax,

Experian and TransUnion, once a year by going to www. annualcreditreport.com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. We encourage consumers
