The Boy Scouts of America Suffolk County Council’s Trailblazer District will be holding an exciting event open to the public hosted by our very own Scout units (Packs, Troops, and Crews) on Saturday, March 7th, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Sun-Vet Mall in Holbrook. The event will celebrate the spirit of Scouting which continues to thrive in Suffolk County. The Trailblazer Mall Show will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. with an opening parade showcasing each units flags and banners.

Planned activities include a district-wide Pinewood Derby runoff, booths by the district’s units with awards for creativity of the activity, adherence to the theme, and proper identification of the unit, chartered organization, and hometown. members of the Holtsville Ecology Center, and Electronic Waste Recycling Inc. who will conduct an on-site e-waste collection. People are invited to bring unwanted computers and other electronics to be properly disposed of at the event. Additional participants will be Scouter’s Reserve showcasing Scouting memorabilia, a local robotics team, and a St. Baldrick’s fundraiser will be held. Serving nearly 26,000 young people between 7 and 21 years of age, the Boy Scouts of America, Suffolk County Council is the foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training. The Trailblazer District, one of four Scouting districts serving Suffolk County, serves the communities on the South Shore from Connetquot to Montauk.

This Valentine’s Day we are Presenting Our Very Own Version of

Suffolk County Community College Women’s Basketball Head Coach and Athletic Director Kevin Foley, of Blue Point, earned his 400th career win last week when Suffolk defeated Hostos Community College 86-30. Foley is completing his 23nd year at the helm of Suffolk’s Women’s team that has advanced to the playoffs in 20 consecutive years. Foley’s 400th win with Suffolk’s Sharks complements an overall 400-125 record, including playing in 14 semi-finals, winning six regional championships, and a national title. Additionally, Foley’s teams have won one national and 11 regional sportsmanship awards and more than 41 of his former players have continued their intercollegiate athletic careers at four-year Division II and Division III

schools. “Athletic Director Foley is wholeheartedly a Shark. He is an excellent teacher, first and then an awesome coach, second,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay, adding, “he is not only a great, winning coach, but just as importantly Coach Foley leads by example with his upbeat attitude, the first ingredient of success in basketball and in life.” Foley graduated from Seton Hall High School in 1965, where he averaged 30 points per game as a senior and was coached by the legendary Frank Layden (president/head coach of the Utah Jazz) and held the Suffolk County and Long Island high school basketball careerscoring records for many years. Foley went on to Seton Hall University on a scholarship and was the university’s basketball

team captain in 1968-1969 and averaged more than 14 points per game. Foley was inducted into the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 in honor of his outstanding basketball career. Foley, in addition to coaching, is a full professor of Health and Human Services at Suffolk County Community College and is currently the Director of Athletics for the second time in his career. Other academic awards Foley has received: • New York State Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, 2004 • Distinguished Faculty Award, 2003 • Outstanding Community College Teacher, University of Texas, 1983 • Teacher Who Made a Difference, Suffolk County Community College, 1981

Winter’s Wrath By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So, one epic snowstorm/ blizzard/”Juno” (who names these things, by the way?) into the Winter of 2015, and I’ve just about had my fill. How about you? As lovely and peaceful as a blanket of freshly fallen snow looks on the landscape, unfortunately, “snow days” only last for about one day, if that. Once the plows emerge, and the salt and sand turns the pristine landscape into a mountain range of dirty, frozen boulders, the novelty wears off pretty quickly – even faster if you are the one responsible for shoveling it. This past week, after hibernating for as long as possible and savoring the

“day off,” I ventured into the great void of white, shovel and scraper in hand, and attempted to determine which mound might be my car. After wading through the untouched walkways and parking lot of my complex, it was time to begin the dreaded clearing-off-the-car process. Easier said than done. After standing on my tiptoes, vainly trying to reach the summit, I was able to push off most of the twofoot accumulation – only to have a mini-avalanche fall to either side of my car. What had been knee-deep snow was now waist-deep. Spectacular. And so it went, for hours, as I slowly made headway. Two things occurred to me during this time. #1 – I

desperately need a larger shovel, and #2 – I need to move to a warmer climate. Immediately. I realize that one major snowstorm through the first six weeks of winter qualifies as fairly fortunate. But seriously, did we need to make up for a season’s worth of snow totals in just one day? Mother Nature sure doesn’t play around. Add to that the fact that February – statistically speaking, according to the too-gleefulfor-my-taste newscasters – is the snowiest month of all and, well, refer back to point #2 above. In lieu of that, I suppose I could at least go shovel shopping before the next big one hits.

Millard Filmore was the 13th President of the United States, assuming the nation’s highest office when President Zachary Taylor died in office after serving a little more than a year as president. Fillmore, a Whig lawyer from western New York who served as Taylor’s Vice President, was the last American president who was not affiliated with the Democratic or Republican parties. An early member of the Whig party, in 1851, Fillmore became the only president in American history to appoint a Whig Supreme Court Justice after his recess appointment of Benjamin Robbins Curtis was confirmed by the United States Senate in December of that year. Fillmore rose to occupy the White House after a humble upbringing in the Finger Lakes region of New York. At 15, the future president was apprenticed to a cloth dresser but

was admitted to the bar in 1823 and soon became a successful lawyer in Buffalo. Fillmore soon ventured into politics as well, using his Whig connections to run for the House of Representatives, where he served for eight years. By 1848, Fillmore was realizing even more ambitious pursuits, as he was elected to serve as Taylor’s Vice President.

He would not serve long in that role, as an illness that befell President Taylor on July 4, 1850, would claim his life just five days later. That thrust Fillmore into the presidency and right into the heart of heated debate surrounding the Compromise of 1850, a package of bills that aimed to defuse tensions and confrontations between the slave states of the

south and the free states of the north. Fillmore would ultimately sign all five bills in the Compromise of 1850 into law, but it was his support for the Fugitive Slave Act, a controversial element of the compromise that required all escaped slaves, upon capture, be returned to their masters and that officials and citizens in free states had to cooperate with the law. Signing and enforcing the act would come back to haunt Fillmore in 1852, when he decided to run for a full term as

President. The Whig Party, still upset that Fillmore supported the act, chose not to nominate Fillmore. That decision effectively ended Fillmore’s political career, though he did make a memorable run as a third party candidate in the election of 1856. In that election, Fillmore was the presidential nominee of the American Party, winning 21 percent of the vote, which was one of the best showings a third-party presidential candidate ever produced. Millard Fillmore passed away on March 8th, 1874, from complications of a stroke.

Billions of greeting cards are sold and exchanged each year, and Valentine’s Day is one of the most popular days of the year to give a loved one a greeting card. The Greeting Card Association says 145 million Valentine’s Day units are sold in the United States each year. The association says seven out of 10 surveyed card buyers consider greeting cards to be essential to them, and are passing on the greeting card tradition to younger generations. Though the tradition of exchanging greeting cards is still going strong, few may know the history and etiquette behind this time-tested tradition. Greeting Card History The tradition of exchanging greeting cards can be traced back to ancient China, where people exchanged messages of good will to celebrate the New Year. Over time, greeting cards were exchanged for various reasons, and by the 1850s greeting cards were transformed from handmade, expensive purchases to relatively affordable means of personal communication and well-wishing. Valentine’s Day greetings have been popular since the Middle Ages, when they were sung or spoken aloud to special people. Cards were popularized in the 1400s, and the oldest known Valentine created during this era is on display in the British Museum in London. Valentines were initially made by hand, but by the end of the 1800s, the process of making cards was handled by machinery. Six amazing actresses (in alternating casts) performed in the latest Sayville Players production of the January Theatre Laboratory. The Effect of Gamma Rays on Manin-the Moon Marigolds, Paul Zindel’s Pulitzer-Prize winning drama, is a psychologically gut-wrenching study of family dynamics between a widow and her two teenage daughters. More destructive than gamma rays on marigolds is head-of-the-household Beatrice Hunsdorfer (masterfully played with snarky wit by Emily Llewellyn and acerbic cynicism by Rowen Mahoney). The widowed mother of two teenage daughters has a toxic personality, and depending on each actress’ performance style, Sayville audiences either laughed to mollify the biting sarcasm or cowered before it. Painfully aware of her half-life state, Beatrice retaliates deplorably in the way she treats her daughters, her elderly tenant, people in general - all her problems. How she became this way unfolds as the play progresses. Eldest daughter Ruth Hunsdorfer (aptly feisty and spirited in the performances shared by both Angelina Keller and Jessica Leigh-Manuell) has suffered terribly from the trauma of witnessing death, coupled with a home-life wrecked by the loony mood

While this profound drama draws upon an emotional depth and understanding to render its characters fully, the Sayville Players met the challenge with remarkable aplomb. Sayville High School students attended this year’s kickoff event for the 2015 FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition, sponsored by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) and hosted by Stony Brook University.

They gathered with more than 40 participating high schools on Saturday, January 3rd at Stony Brook University’s Jacob Javits Lecture Center for a presentation and simulcast broadcast from New Hampshire. After the presentation, each team received a kit of parts, which they will use along with other materials to

build a 120-pound robot. The teams will have six weeks to construct the robot and prepare for the upcoming competition to be held on March 26th28th at Hofstra University. Members of the Sayville High School robotics team are pictured displaying the contents of the kit of parts.
