Here’s Hoping By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Hope: A feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen. And so it begins. February, the month of anticipation, from furry groundhogs predicting the forecast to expressions of love and affection come Valentine’s Day. Is there anyone who isn’t even the slightest bit glad to bid January farewell? Apologies, once again, to anyone with birthdays, anniversaries and other notable milestones during this first month of the new year, the symbolic representation of all things new and fresh. With the possible exception of the few moments of New Year’s Eve celebrations which spilled over into the next morning, I have to

say that, for me, 2016 is severely lacking in positive spin. Sure, winter has spared us its wrath for the most part…save for one tiny twofoot helping of the white stuff. Still, the bitter cold and gray, overcast skies leave something to be desired. There is only so much hibernating and vegetating one can realistically do. (Netflix, anyone?) But here we are, turning the page – on the calendar and hopefully on life – as month two begins, providing us with yet another blank canvas to fill. Here’s to getting back to doing those things which make us happy, to not allowing the negativity of other individuals and situations dictate our moods, to rising above the monotony in search of fulfillment.

Here’s to hoping that February provides the perfect precursor to spring, and all the beauty and wonderment it brings. Plus, we have an extra day to take advantage of this year, a bonus opportunity if ever there was one. Now all we have to do is make use of it, and of all those clichéd philosophies we want so badly to believe in. Whatever it is you are hoping for, may you have the courage to go after it. Good things come to those who wait; but a pointed step in the right direction surely doesn’t hurt. Here’s to February, to frosted windowpanes and picturesque winter sunsets and the beginnings of revitalization. Oh, and of course Buddy the Betta’s 1st birthday. Priorities humans, priorities.

Vrooommm! The sound of the car engine was all I could hear. I just got back from the eye doctor. Not good. I knew that someday I would get them, but now? I was only 3 years-old. I looked at my mom and brother. They were talking, but I could not hear them. My brother might have been thinking, “Now I have this loser brother with glasses.” I bet he would have said something but my mom would not let him. She simply wouldn’t. Then my mom took her phone out of her pocket and gave it to my brother. I saw him scroll down until the contact for my dad came up. I was starting to hear now, but faintly. My brother hit the “speaker” button on her phone. “Guess who is going to look even more handsome?” My dad guessed me on the first try. About five more minutes passed, and we were rolling down a “one-

way” parking lot entrance. I saw these menacing looking penguins out of the few inches of window space I had because I was so short. They were staring me down, those ugly penguins. I thought how silly I was to think those penguins are menacing. I thought how my eyes might be acting up or maybe the tinted window might be doing it. I looked up from the seemingly menacing penguins up to the name of the shop. It was called the Eyeglass House. Then we found a spot in the deserted parking lot. When I walked into the store, it was a room where I half expected there to be gas coming out of the wall like a torture chamber. It was a 6’x6’ room with a hat rack and a 2’x4’ bench. There was another door in front of me. I walked through the door, touching a dry, old, rusty doorknob. I looked to the left and saw two desks and at least 100 pairs

of glasses. I saw a bunch of chairs with a life-sized Mickey Mouse. I took a seat… “Slay-terry?” an old woman croaked. My mom, Aidan and I stood up and walked over. The old woman had bright purple glasses and nasty, old, ugly, horribly crooked teeth that reminded me of a beaver’s. She picked out three pairs and I disliked all of them. We tried on a green pair that I looked stupid in, a red pair that I liked the best, and heavy, vomit-worthy blue ones that had holes in the rims that kept the glasses on my face. The holes must have been there to catch a new fashion trend, but the only thing it was catching was strands of my hair. “I like these!” the nasty lady and Mom said. Moments after, we walked out with me wearing the blue glasses. I guess all stories don’t have happy endings.

Collaborative learning and technological prowess were the foundation for the Digital Generation elective introduced at BayportBlue Point High School this year. The inter-district program brought together five Long Island school districts to highlight the growing importance of digital media, as it related to personal branding, business and individual safety. Throughout the halfyear program, students completed traditional coursework as well as worked with their peers from other districts to complete projects focused on one of eight digital media-based topics. These

included cyberbullying, self-image/identity, privacy and security, Internet safety, information literacy, creative credit and copyright, digital footprint and reputation as well as relationships and communication. Through the use of Google collaborative tools like Hangouts, Gmail and Drive, they contributed to documents and presentations together remotely while experiencing what it is like to work in the 21st-century business environment. Within groups, the students researched current events about the given subject, created a PSA on the topic and designed infographics

about the themes. They presented the completed projects before a panel of judges at Stony Brook University in January. The students who were part of the two winning groups were invited to visit Google’s offices in New York City. Bayport-Blue Point senior Dylan Rohme was part of a winning team that presented on cyberbullying. The collaborating districts hope to use the students’ projects to create an informational resource center, which can be used to educate younger students about this growing field.

SPELLING CHAMP ADVANCES - Academy Street Elementary School fourthgrader Heidi Almskog has been named the top speller in the school’s Scripps Spelling Bee and will advance to compete in the regional contest at Hofstra University this March. Heidi competed against 14 school finalists from fourth and fifth grades during the schoolwide bee. Reporting on History As part of a schoolwide interdisciplinary unit focusing on “Where We Are,” Woodhull Elementary School fifthand sixth-grade students in Gabrielle Donovan’s Intermediate class scripted and filmed a fictionalized news segment in which reporters interviewed people throughout world history on how geography

affected their lives. Some students served as anchors and reporters while others portrayed farmers from the ancient civilizations that developed around the Tigris and Euphrates, Nile, Indus, and Huang He (Yellow) rivers, as well as modern residents of northwestern Canada, Quebec, and the city of Toronto. Each interviewee

discussed how factors like climate, weather and natural resources shaped their lifestyles and the local economy, reflecting the key points of the unit. Fire Island models its schoolwide unit design after the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program.

EAGLE CONGRATS - Suffolk County Legislators Bill Lindsay and Rob Calarco recently attended a special ceremony in honor of Anthony Prezioso, who is a proud and committed Boy Scout from local Troop 329 that has been awarded the highest rank of Eagle Scout. Prezioso is among the small percentage of young men who have achieved this prestigious honor. For his Eagle Scout project, he successfully joined together with friends, family, and fellow scouts to construct a community Hanukkah Menorah for Bayport’s Chamber Park.

BE BRAVE - Connetquot Central School District’s Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School (OBMS) Principal Ms. Suzanne Baily and her ‘Team Brave’ members recently organized a series of confidence-building activities for 7th graders. Students watched the video of the song Brave by Sara Bareilles and were then challenged with the question, How Big Is Your Brave? Teachers and students worked together and in small groups to explore the idea of bravery and honesty, fostering relationships and creating a culture of compassion, empathy, trust and tolerance. Athletes Helping Athletes Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School (CHS) Athletes-HelpingAthletes (AHA) Club recently stopped by Edward J. Bosti Elementary School to visit students and explain the many advantages of participating extra-curricular programs, such as music, band, and cheering as well as sports. Seven members of the

club engaged the 5th graders in a variety of team-building activities to show the importance of working together. The fifth graders were anxious to ask questions about the CHS students’ experiences because they will be ‘moving up’ to the middle school in September. The Edward J. Bosti Elementary School students shared some

of their anxieties about the changes they would experience in terms of lockers, changing classes and homework. The CHS AHA Club is the largest in Nassau and Suffolk County. It consists of over 60 service-minded students who pledge to stay away from alcohol and drugs and pay their wisdom forward to local elementary school students.

WHAT A GAME - Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School Boys Varsity Basketball Coach Kyle Black and his Thunderbirds hosted undefeated Northport High School in a recent night game in Bohemia. The local boys kept the score close in the first half, but the Tigers of Northport opened up a big lead in the second half which the Thunderbirds could not overcome. Northport maintained its undefeated record (8-0/11-0) while Connetquot dropped to 3-5 (5-7 overall).

SCOUT HONORS VETS - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently presented an Eagle Award to Francis Reilly of Troop 184 in Sayville. Mr. Reilly attained the rank of Eagle Scout by completing a project which honors veterans who attended his local church. The software automatically converted the design into instructions

for the printer, which then extruded a continuous stream of molten polymer in layers in order to “print” the object in a process that can take several hours. Mr. Stuart Pollak, Principal of Connetquot’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School, in Bohemia, recently hosted an anti-drug & antibullying presentation by fifth graders. On Thursday, October 29th, Youth and Family Services Coordinator (YFS) Ms. Laura Michelsen, directed the

students in a program of skits and songs designed to emphasize self-esteem, and making positive choices. A poignant section of the presentation had photos of Sycamore teachers, as children, relating their own interests and insecurities, so students realize that their teachers can help, and relate to their own concerns.

The auditorium was filled with students, teachers and parents who came to enjoy the program, and the Halloween parade by the school’s kindergartners! Congratulations to the talented and creative fifth grade presenters, Ms. Michelsen, and the entire staff for a thoughtprovoking program.

Maritime Explorium On Tuesday, October 27th, Sycamore Avenue Elementary School Principal Mr. Stuart Pollak welcomed Mrs. Melora Lane, of the Maritime Explorium, to the campus. Mrs. Lane introduced Sycamore 4th graders from Mrs. Klaus’ class to an innovative program entitled Let’s Get Rolling! This STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) inspired program allows students to work as green engineers! Students were introduced to the recycling culture where people find ways to reuse materials from scrap.

Using the engineering design process, and being aware of the impact materials have on the environment, students created a race car with recycled materials. Mrs. Klaus added that “… the students also created ramps to test their cars,” which required a familiarity with height, weight, friction and gravity, and how those factors would impact momentum. Students designed their own experiments and kept track of their findings using drawings, sketches, writing, graphing and group discussion. Mrs. Lane’s visit

gave the Sycamore students another fun example of how they can play and learn using STEM principals in school, and at home. The Maritime Explorium, located in Port Jefferson, New York, encourages youngsters to explore and play together with nautically themed sciencebased exhibits and activities. Mr. Pollak and Mrs. Klaus joined students in thanking Mrs. Lane for the visit, and working with them on such an interesting, and fun project!
