Story by Linda Mittiga Students in Mr. Chad Cross’ Design and Drawing for Production classes worked in groups to design and construct a box that will hold a Hershey candy bar. “A typical drawing assignment takes two to five days,” Mr. Cross explained. “Students had under thirty-five
minutes to design, sketch, draw, cut, fold, and glue a package that will prevent the candy bars from getting damaged during shipping.” The High School students had to work with their design partners to solve the problem. “The first year of the pandemic,” Mr. Cross said, “put a stop to the draw-off

Family & Children’s Association www.fcali.org With locations across Nassau and Suffolk, Family & Children’s Association (FCA) is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to providing help and hope to Long Island’s most vulnerable children, families, seniors and communities. FCA envisions a Long Island where a legacy of optimal health, educational success and economic security passes from one generation to the next; each year it serves 30,000 individuals and families in Suffolk and Nassau counties. Its mission strives to make our island a better place for all of us to live, work and raise a family. FCA has served Long Islanders since 1884 and today its more than 40 programs fall into five big areas of need: Addiction Prevention, Treatment & Recovery Taking on addiction from every angle, beginning with prevention. Recovery support services are offered Islandwide with offices from Hempstead to Westhampton Beach. Children’s Mental Health & Wellness This division offers an array of services and supports designed to promote the health and wellness of children and their families. The services are for individuals up to 21 years of age who have or are at risk of developing a mental health diagnosis. Services are always free to clients, voluntary, family-driven, strength-based, and culturally competent, with location and scheduling tailored to each family’s needs. They also provide support for the families of individuals with mental and/ or behavioral health issues. Prevention & Family Support FCA’s prevention team provides critical services to at-risk children and families including a nursery co-op program,
alcohol and substance abuse and gun violence r e d u c t i o n program, and more, through collaboration, education, and advocacy. Residential Care FCA operates four residences that focus on quality care, seamless transitions and well-managed aftercare services for youth. Nassau Haven and Walkabout provide emergency shelter and longer term transitional housing for homeless, runaway and trafficked youth. Two other residences support children and young adults with serious emotional disturbances or mental health issues. Senior & Adult Services FCA believes that every senior deserves to live with dignity, safety and independence. FCA helps more than 10,000 seniors a year with meal deliveries, caregiver support, home visits for companionship, elder abuse prevention and advocacy. The number of people who turn to FCA for help is growing and with it, the need for donations to close gaps in government funding. FCA’s programs and services are greatly enhanced by the involvement of others, whether through donations of time or money, and welcome the help of all Long Islanders to further its mission. Apply Today For Connetquot Central School District’s 202223 Universal Pre-K Program Applications for Connetquot Central School District’s 20222023 Universal Pre-Kindergarten program are now available on the district’s website, http://www.ccsdli. org/our_district/universal_pre-k. The UPK program will be full day, run only by SCOPE and will be housed in district elementary schools. Final locations for 20222023 have yet to be determined. All interested residents are encouraged to apply. To be eligible, your child must turn 4 years old on or before Dec. 1, 2022. Applicants will be selected by a lottery to attend the full day program. All completed forms and required documentation must be submitted to Central Registration via email to registration@ccsdli.org; faxed to

Breast Cancer Survivors Sought For Hotline Training Begins February 8 The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program seeks women and men who have had breast cancer to become hotline volunteers. The four-session takes place on consecutive Tuesdays — February 8th, 15th, 22nd and March 1st –f rom 10 am to 1 pm on zoom. This in-depth training
includes presentations by nurse navigators and social workers on basic breast cancer education, active listening skills, and tips on engaging the community. Attendance at all four sessions is required. For 42 years, the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program has been helping women and
