Third-graders at Blue Point Elementary School were recently treated to a fun and exciting trip around the world as they took part in the assembly program “Let’s Go to China!” During the event, the students were introduced to the Chinese culture, as presented by awardwinning singer/songwriter

Patricia Shih. Through song and spoken word, they learned about Chinese folklore and traditional Chinese customs, such as the “Ribbon Dance.” Additionally, Ms. Shih displayed various Chinese instruments along the front of the gymnasium, and student volunteers were asked to join her in front of the audience in

order to demonstrate such instruments as the gong. Ms. Shih concluded her presentation by teaching students simple Chinese phrases such as “Thank you” and “Happy New Year,” in celebration of the upcoming Chinese New Year taking place on January 28th.

The Islip War Journals are compilations of veterans who served in specific conflicts. The first Islip War Journal covered veterans who served in World War

Student Recognition The January 17th Bayport-Blue Point Board of Education Planning Session was full of recognitions for district students, highlighting them for both their accomplishments and community efforts. To begin the evening’s recognitions, Bayport-Blue Point High school senior

and student-musician Olivia Ingrassia was recognized for recently being selected to play violin at the National Association for Music Education’s All-National Honors Symphony Orchestra in Grapevine, Texas. Additionally, a number of the high school’s Leo Club members were handed

tokens of appreciation for travelling to Bayport Beach in the early morning of Nov. 6 to help clean the surrounding area. The students’ efforts proved to be prompt, diligent and extremely effective, as they collectively picked up all of the garbage and left the beach a cleaner place for the community.

Taking the Stage raised in the North Pole as an elf who journeys to New York City in search of his father. Throughout the play, Buddy’s charming naiveté made for moments of humor and pathos alike as he tries to fit in with his new family and especially his father Walter, a serious and busy executive played by sixth-grader Thomas Brennan. The youngest students in the Primary and Early Elementary grades cheerily played elves in the North Pole, and employees of Macy’s dressed as elves, singing the carol “Deck the Halls” and the pop hit

“Jingle Bell Rock.” Other lead roles included Aidan Oviedo-Torres as Santa Claus, Malia Wendt as Walter’s wife Emily, Jack Brennan as Walter’s son Michael, and Joey Coleman as Walter’s overbearing boss Mr. Greenway. After the performance, the school held a ceremony for peace. A large wire sculpture of a dove made by nurse Janet Laviolette was unveiled on the stage and each student in the school placed a written “wish for peace” into it as they read their wish aloud to the audience.

Although the holiday season had already passed, the spirit of it was alive and well as Woodhull Elementary School students recently performed the musical “Elf,” which had been postponed from its original date of December 20th. The schoolwide musical, based on the 2003 film and the 2010 Broadway musical of the same name, featured all students in every class and delighted the full house audience. As we begin this second month of 2017, let us take stock of the year so far… Mother Nature has been relatively kind, sparing us the worst of winter’s wrath and limiting the hazardous weather to one shovel-worthy pileup of the white stuff. Of course, history has shown February to be among the snowiest here on Long Island, so be forewarned. No matter what that little furry critter says tomorrow, we still have several weeks to go before we can start looking for crocuses. Me, I just purchased three new books and am actually looking forward to some cozy, inclement weather to settle in and start reading. The beginning of the year may not be great for outdoor activities - although, it should be noted,

“Spud,” who I adopted back at the end of November. While no pet will ever come close to replacing my Buddy and our very special relationship, Spud is certainly an entertaining little fellow with a personality all his own. Just a mere baby betta when I took him in, he is slowly growing into a beautiful boy with spikey blue fins and a penchant for darting to and fro and “playing” with his reflection. Spud’s swimming skills can use a little work, and I’m still crushing his food pellets into tiny, more manageable crumbs for his delicate system; but, overall, he seems to be adjusting to his new home quite nicely. And with that, we head into February, hoping that each passing month brings with it a little more sunshine into our lives.

Prevent Wedding Day Foot Pain Master the Wedding Save-the-Date While some couples may get cold feet on their wedding days, there’s no reason for anyone, including brides who don high heels in the name of fashion, to endure foot pain. Foot pain is a common complaint for those unaccustomed to wearing stilettos or formal footwear. Wedding attire is not worn every day, so it’s no surprise that wedding footwear may contribute to some aches and pains. Podiatrists warn that heels between one and two inches in height are the best to maintain foot health. But that heel size does not work for all brides. Brides-to-be, bridesmaids and others can employ these tips to keep their feet pain-free throughout the ceremony and reception: around the house with a pair of socks GIVE YOUR FEET A BREAK Swap out a higher heel with a lower to stretch out straps and enable them one every couple of hours. Do not wait to mold to your foot shape. Many couples’ weddings take more than a year to plan. Couples want all of the special people in their lives to witness their vows, and giving guests advance notice can ensure as many loved ones as possible attend the ceremony. To be certain that guests have ample notice to clear their schedules, many couples now turn to save-the-date cards, which announce weddings well in advance of the actual wedding day. Save-the-date cards once were reserved only for weddings that required travel or special circumstances, such as destination weddings. But such cards have now become commonplace for all weddings. That’s because many people plan vacations or business trips anywhere from four to six months

in advance. Busy people require plenty of notice to include this important date on their calendars, particularly when wedding dates fall during popular travel seasons or around the holidays. Save-the-date cards are typically mailed six to eight months prior to the wedding, though some are sent as early as a year before the big day. Once a date and a location is secured, savethe-dates can be ordered and mailed. Save-the-date cards require couples to assemble their guest lists well in advance of the wedding. Everyone who will get a wedding invitation should also receive a save-the-date card. There’s no turning back once cards are sent, so couples will need to be certain everyone they want to attend is getting

advance notice. It’s acceptable to mail save-the-date cards even if some wedding day details are still up in the air. Guests really only need to know the date and location of the wedding. Couples also can use the save-the-date card to direct invitees to a wedding website where guests can learn the details of the wedding as they unfold. RSVP information does not need to be included on the save-the-date card. Save-the-date cards are much less formal than invitations, so couples can have fun with them. They can showcase couples’ clever personalities or funny quirks. Keep in mind it is in poor taste to mention gifts or registries on save-the-date cards. There will be plenty of time to direct guests to registries later on.

Determining Wedding Day Dress Codes Wedding invitations do more than merely announce that a celebration is on the horizon. Invitations provide key information about the ceremony and festivities to follow. Many details, including the location, time and date of the wedding, are spelled out on the wedding invitations. However, invitations can sometimes leave guests confused about the appropriate style of attire for the occasion. Even though wedding invitations rarely offer specific information regarding attire, chances are the wording will provide clues that can help guests interpret the desired dress code. CASUAL If the invitation mentions casual attire, it’s important to realize that everyday casual

shirt for men. Women can wear a sundress or slacks or a skirt and an attractive blouse. If the invitation mentions beach casual, shorts and even sandals are likely acceptable. SEMIFORMAL Semiformal dresswear, sometimes referred to as “dressy casual,” is a step up from casual clothing. Cocktail dresses or a more elegant skirt and top are the norms. Gentleman generally wear a suit and tie. Coordinate the colors of clothing to the time of day. Fabrics should represent the season. For example, a linen suit will not pass at a winter wedding. FORMAL Formal attire is the default dress code for

the majority of weddings. When the invitation does not specify a dress code, it is safe to assume formal attire is expected. Men can choose among a dark suit and tie or a tuxedo. Women can opt for a formal cocktaillength dress, a classic suit or a long dress. Select among tones that are gray, black or brown. BLACK TIE Black tie events also require formal attire. Black tie typically goes hand-in-hand with an evening wedding. Black tie is more rigid for male guests, who should wear a tuxedo, black bow tie, cummerbund and patent leather shoes. Women have a little more leeway with their attire at such gatherings. A long evening gown might be preferable. However, a

chic cocktail dress also can be acceptable, and darker, neutral colors are most appropriate. Some invitations may reference “Black Tie Preferred.” While men may opt for a tuxedo, a black suit also can be worn. WHITE TIE The most formal of occasions will request white tie attire. Ball gowns and tuxedoes with tails are the norm, as are dramatic jewelry and hairstyles. White tie attire is akin to what one might see worn to awards shows. When attending a wedding, it is always better to be overdressed than underdressed. Guests can consult with fellow guests or the bride and groom if they are unsure of the dress code.

Helen B. Following months of hard work and preparation, 70 members of the 140 W.T. Clarke High School DECA team competed against thousands of high school students in the Nassau County Regional DECA Competition held at Freeport High School on January 7th. According to its website, DECA is a nonprofit student organization that prepares emerging

leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the world. These talented W.T. Clarke DECA members participated in competitive events that are aligned with the National Curriculum Standards in marketing, business management and administration, finance, and hospitality

and tourism. Students were evaluated on written components, such as an exam, or on a manual as well as share an interactive component before an industry professional who served as a judge. The district commends this remarkable team and wishes them much success as they compete in the State-level competition in Rochester, New York, from March 8th-10th.

Inspirational Assembly Ronkonkoma Middle School in the Connetquot Central School District recently held two powerful assemblies in order to teach the students multiple life lessons, including how to build positive character traits and the positive outcomes of overcoming difficult obstacles. Sixth- and seventh-grade students were invited to attend a presentation given by acclaimed martial artist and eighth-degree black belt holder Jerry Figgiani. During his presentation, Mr. Figgiani told the story of how one of his students, Robert Aliano, made a

poor decision one night in college at the age of 21 which would affect him for the rest of his life. After being struck by a car and slipping into a coma, Mr. Aliano’s family was told that he would never be able to walk again. However, Mr. Aliano was able to overcome what the doctors predicted, and provided the young students with a story of inspiration of how he overcame his disability and will soon earn his black belt in karate this upcoming June. To conclude the uplifting presentation, Mr. Aliano took questions from the

students, and presented his great strength by breaking a wooden plank with his fist. Additionally, eighthgraders heard from retired Suffolk County Police Officer Paul Failla who delivered an inspiring presentation regarding character education. Throughout the course of his highly interactive presentation, Mr. Failla covered such topics as mutual respect, leadership, and the importance of being aware of cyberbullying and At the districtwide its negative effects. Seventh Annual S.T.E.M. Symposium held at the Lincoln Avenue School in Sayville, students in grades 2 through 5 spent quality time with their parents exploring science. Students and families from each elementary school who signed up for the annual evening activity were allowed to pick three workshops from the offerings. Some students and parents learned how to write code, were challenged by a Break-Out Adventure

or observed the night sky. Others designed windpowered cars or cargobearing paper airplanes, created items for 3-D printing or were impressed by The Wacky Science and The Sweetbriar Nature Center presentations. “The program runs on the energy of the teacher and high school student volunteers,” said S.T.E.M. organizer Lincoln Avenue Principal Michele LeBlanc. “We have an amazing staff!” Indeed, the tremendous

success of this annual elementary S.T.E.M. Symposium is often measured by the amount of excitement and interest the assorted labs and workshops generate among the students, parents, and volunteer teachers. Yet, it can also be a gauge for the level of student preparedness in the Spring Science Fair competitions. If this year’s symposium is any indicator, the Science Fair projects are bound to be exhilarating!
