tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. Puppy raising is when an individual fosters a guide or service dog puppy in their home for the first year of its life. Although children can be involved in this process, they ask that all applicants are over 18 years of age. All puppy raisers are required to attend monthly puppy raising classes. “Providing Hope Beyond The Food” . . . this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry that reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help. They operate a very impressive Food Outreach weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www. LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile manner because the Gospel

World Heritage provides academic year and semester exchange programs in the United States for high school students from around the world. The Marty Lyon’s Foundation – Long Island Chapter will host its 5th annual Marty Gras Dinner Dance on Saturday, February 17th from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Captain Bill’s Restaurant; 122 Ocean Ave. in Bay Shore. Proceeds will benefit the Foundation’s mission to grant wishes to children diagnosed with lifethreatening or terminal illnesses. “The annual Chapter dinner dance at Captain Bill’s is an event that provides an opportunity for our generous supporters to come together to enjoy the festive New Orleans experience here on Long island. The evening includes cocktails, buffet dinner and dessert with a hint of Nawlins flavor and lively music by TradeWinds. The Marty Gras fund raiser is a reminder of the important mission of the Marty Lyons Foundation started over 35 years ago. Peacocks & Pretty Things Beauty. They say it is in the eye of the beholder; but truly, it exists all around us, if we take the time to notice. My love of photography has certainly enhanced my ability to appreciate the aesthetics of my surroundings, from interesting cloud formations while waiting for sunsets, to pretty roadside blossoms that would otherwise be characterized as weeds to the undiscerning eye, to the novelty of light and shadow as it plays out upon a surface. Such is the abstract nature of visual “art.” And then there are the moments when it appears before you in its most natural, stunningly striking form. Case in point: several weeks ago, my friend and I enjoyed a late lunch at the famed Milleridge Inn, having both decided that it was the perfect locale after having not dined there in quite some time. To our surprise, the holiday lights were still on full display, with remnants of the Christmas season in every corner of the restaurant and shops. Having just finished dismantling my own decorations the previous week, I was at once
nostalgic and slightly weary of them. As we exited the bakery and made our way to the official Christmas shop located on the property, I spotted what appeared to be a large bird sitting on the railing of the ice cream parlor. “Is that real?” I whispered to my friend, “Or just a decoration?” We stared intently, only to be instantly startled. “It moved! Oh my gosh, it moved!” As we tentatively approached, we realized it was a GIANT peacock. And with that, no less than half a dozen others peered out from behind various corners and crevices, along with several chickens and peahens. Unfazed by the humans before them, they moseyed to and fro, pausing briefly to study us. Thoroughly infatuated, we wandered after them, attempting to snap pictures and even a few short videos of these majestic feathered creatures. As I knelt down and tentatively reached my hand out toward one especially beautiful specimen, my friend grabbed my phone to
capture the sight. The bird cocked his head slightly, examining me carefully, then strode purposefully toward me. Unsure if he was planning to sit on my lap or - more likely - to take a sizable bite out of me, I froze, backing away slightly. “Did you get the picture?” I nervously called to my friend. “Yes, I think I took about 27 of them,” she replied giggling. Alright then, no sense pushing my luck. I quickly stood up as the peacock stared at me, seemingly perplexed. “Sorry pretty bird, thanks for the photo op.” And with that, he fluttered his massive wings and took off, soaring to a nearby tree branch. By that point, a small crowd had gathered around us, amazed that this one bird had taken such an apparent liking to me. A little boy exclaimed to his parents, “Wow, they fly???” Peering up at the bird, now perched overhead, my friend and I looked at each other in utter amazement. “That,” I said, “was clearly the highlight of the day.” Beauty. It’s everywhere.

Marty Lyons, a former NFL star for the New York Jets and a member of the legendary New York Sack Exchange, experienced three life-changing events that led him to establish a nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to granting the wishes of seriously ill children. In 1982, with encouragement from family and friends, the Marty Lyons Foundation became a reality. It is unique among wishgranting organizations in that it provides a first wish and will consider a second wish for children who fall out of remission and are facing more battles with their illnesses. Veterans Programs Available Islip Town Councilman John C. Cochrane, Jr., wishes to remind local veterans of the many services that the Town of Islip can provide to those who have served our country. Dwyer Project, a PTSD support service group aimed at helping veterans cope with PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The Suffolk County Community College Cheer Team placed second in the Open All Girl Division at the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) Nationals held on January 13th at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Disney World. Suffolk faced a tough division of 12 teams. Six went on to the finals. Ten of the 12 other colleges Suffolk competed against were fouryear institutions. In past three years, Suffolk has brought home a bronze and two silver medals. The difference between first and

These photos tell the story of good people doing something at the recent Third Annual PurpleGold Charity Volleyball Game. This year’s successful fundraising event sponsored by the Sayville girls middle school volleyball team with coach James McLoughlin and volunteer coach Deb Urso, specifically benefitted local families in need and it rallied the enthusiasm and support of all who
attended. With prize drawings during the game, many lucky people went home with a host of donated gift certificates from Furci’s Restaurant in Bayport, Sayville Volleyball Academy and Super Bowls of Sayville. To raise money, the girls volleyball team sold purple and gold tickets and collected gift cards for Fandango movies or Dave and Busters, for Target, Walmart, Kmart,
CVS, Walgreens, Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, iTunes, Google Play along with gift cards to Plated.com, BlueApron.com and local drycleaners or laundry services. But the greatest reward of all - according to Girls Volleyball Coach Jim McLoughlin - was that “the girls and their families raised more than $2,200 for families in our community!”

A Step Ahead Twice a week, a Lynwood Elementary School classroom in the Sachem Central School District transforms into a magnificent dance hall as fifth-grade students practice popular ballroom dances. In its ninth year, the program teaches students dance skills that improve
nonverbal communication, problem-solving and teamwork. Student partners practice in unison as they first review the steps by counting aloud together, then add music to each dance. During the 10-week program designed by Dancing Classrooms Long Island, teaching artist Jessica Heins and
educational liaison Alison Armbruster guide students through seven dances, including the merengue, foxtrot, rumba, waltz, tango, swing and polka. At the culmination of the program, the students put on a performance for their parents showcasing their new dancing skills.

Zombie 5K Walk Colorfully dressed zombies joined parents, students, teachers and staff members at Connetquot High School on January 20th for the fifth annual 5K Zombie Walk, in benefit of the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children. More than 100 attendees were ready to walk the halls of Connetquot High school 10 times to complete the 5K goal, as
they did their best to evade the zombies and keep three flags attached to their belts along the way. As they walked the halls, the goal was to avoid zombies who would try to remove the participants’ flags one at a time. When all three flags were “surrendered,” the participants would be declared a zombie for 2018. The CFAC provides financial grants to teachers and district schools to
purchase equipment and supplies, and supports special assemblies and training that directly benefit the students of the Connetquot Central School District. The foundation has awarded well over $140,000 in support of school district efforts to enhance the educational opportunities for Connetquot’s children.

In Sayville School District, Cherry Avenue elementary students once again hosted their Annual Brunch for select residents from Bristol Assisted Living facility and Sunrise Village, as well as senior citizens from the West Sayville area. Welcomed at the door by helpful fifth-grade students each guest was escorted to decorated tables in the cafeteria for a morning meal of eggs,
assorted pastries, bagels and coffee. In addition to Principal Dr. Lisa Ihne’s cheerful greetings, the brunch bunch was treated to a musical presentation provided by the Fifth-grade chorus. The Brunch, an idea developed by the Cherry Avenue Site-Based committee, is always a tremendous success for everyone involved. The students who volunteer to setup, socialize, or clean
up, also practice their social skills and show great respect for the senior citizens they meet; in turn, the local residents truly enjoy getting acquainted with the marvelous elementary students. Special mention goes to the wonderful students of the BOCES culinary department (under the direction of Chef Barry Rosenthal) for their efforts in preparing and serving the delicious breakfast.
Baking Up Fun their cakes in the oven for the proper amount of time, the students utilized their creative abilities to decorate cakes with dashes of frosting and candy. In doing such, examples of the finished products resembled a bonfire, the logo of the popular superhero “The
Flash,” and even a cake emblazoned with the words “Connetquot T-Birds” on top. According to Mrs. Parks, faculty and staff members were able to sample the cakes after they were completed, and chose the winner in the spirit of fun and friendly competition.

For consistently demonstrating exemplary character, nineteen High School students were recognized by Sayville teachers and staff at the Fall 2017 Breakfast of Champions. The morning ceremony, to which the students’ family members were also invited, recognized students for their innate set of values evident by how they conduct themselves throughout the school day. Breakfast of Champions, held once each semester, has been a beloved tradition, one that keeps on giving to all who attend. As she has done every year, Assistant Principal Jillian Makris was eloquent in introducing the purpose of the character recognition program and what general qualities of character have set these selected students apart. “These are the students who help make up the moral fabric of our school… and every day they strive to be the best they can… not just for a grade on their report card but in life as human
beings.” In addition, Mrs. Makris thanked the family members present for providing the upbringing, encouragement, and support within the home that nurtured these remarkable students. Some familiar faces and family names among this year’s recipients were proof that “strong families make good communities.” During the presentations, District faculty and staff members called upon each recipient one-by-one and shared their appreciation with personalized messages,* at which time each student shook hands with Assistant Principal Jillian Makris and received a Breakfast of Champions certificate and plaque with his or her portrait on a Wheaties Box background. In closing, Mrs. Makris referred to the quote about “bending to help” and noted “…that is the main tenant we heard this morning. Each and every one of you - all the nominees here - you’ve all helped someone in this
High School or outside….” Immediately, Makris requested the nominees stand at their seats for additional applause. After, everyone enjoyed a satisfying breakfast sponsored by the Breakfast of Champions program which was served and prepared for this special occasion by the Sayville food service workers. Additional thanks went to the technology department (Mr. Vogel and Mr. Cross) for making the plaques, and Mr. Ari Kramer and his chamber students who provided the soothing musical ambiance. Virtual Enterprise High school students in the Sachem Central School District are receiving realworld business experience as part of the Virtual Enterprise class. In its third year at Sachem, the Virtual Enterprise class teaches upperclassmen valuable business skills as they navigate each aspect of a complete business plan. Guided by teacher Keith McCaffery, Sachem High School East has two student-run business firms and High School North has one firm, led by Business Chairperson Thomas Sullivan. Students at both schools have the opportunity to earn college credits as they continue through the program. At the beginning of the full-year class, each student submits a résumé and interviews for their desired position within the firm. The virtual business mirrors a traditional organizational environment and is broken up into different departments, including human resources, marketing, sales, finance and information technology, which are all overseen by a management

team. Students collaborate to develop a business name, logo, website and various promotional materials such as brochures, business cards, product catalogs and a commercial. High School North’s virtual business, Mobuilt, is a technology company focused on selling cutting-edge devices whose products include televisions, cellphone cases and drones. The firm’s flagship product is a pair of shoes that generates energy with each step that is used to charge your cellphone. 2-Pure International, one of the Sachem High School East-based firms, is a culturally driven meal delivery service. The business provides traditional meals from countless cultures around the world, such as Latin American empanadas and bratwurst from Germany. The business offers a subscription service ranging from one to 12 months aimed to expand their customers’ cultural palate. In addition, High School East students created a second firm called U-Create. This company is
a monthly box subscription service that provides products to customers at a lower price by bundling items. Customers can choose from four categories including beauty, pets, fitness and technology. The monthly subscriptions are broken up into three options - bronze, silver and platinum - which represent the number of items per box. “Virtual Enterprise allows us to take our business where we want it to go,” said senior and Mobuilt CEO Jeanine Cerqueira. “Whether it is technology, clothing or both, we can use our ideas to expand the market.” As part of the Virtual Enterprise class, the student businesses competed in a business plan competition and trade show at Farmingdale State College. The student firm competed against 35 other student-run firms for a chance to attend the Virtual Enterprises International Business Plan Competition taking place in New York City April 16th, at the Microsoft Technology Center.

Honoring Dr. King Empathy was on the mind of students throughout Wenonah Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District recently as students participated in a two-week kindness challenge in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As part of the character education curriculum at Wenonah, students took part in the Kindness and Justice Challenge that included multiple activities aimed to foster an inclusive
learning environment. During Mismatched Shoe Day, students wore two different shoes to school to generate conversation on seeing things from the perspective of someone else. Other special themed activities that occurred during the week included Backwards Day when students wore a shirt backwards to represent that once something hurtful is said it can’t be taken back. During an activity
named Mix It Up, students were assigned to sit at a different table during their lunch period and make conversation with a student they didn’t know. The activity was a valuable opportunity for students to meet new people and make new friends. Faculty and staff also took part in the challenge by participating in the Mix It Up activity. Teachers sat with colleagues they don’t normally sit with at a recent staff breakfast.
