As residents have been experiencing, winter can bring a variety of weather conditions ranging from light dustings of snow and scattered rain to severe storms and freezing temperatures. It is important to take extra precautions when braving the elements this season. Heavy exertion, such as shoveling snow, clearing debris or pushing a car, increase the risk of a heart attack. To avoid problems, remember these tips: · Stay warm, dress warm and slow down when working outdoors. · Take frequent rests to avoid over exertion. · If you feel chest pain, stop and seek help immediately. Prolonged exposure to cold temperatures can cause hypothermia, especially in children and the elderly. Watch for these symptoms: · Inability to concentrate · Poor coordination · Slurred speech · Drowsiness · Exhaustion · Uncontrollable shivering, followed by a sudden lack of shivering. If a person’s body temperature drops below 95 degrees Fahrenheit, get emergency medical assistance immediately. Remove wet clothing, wrap the victim in warm blankets and give

BREWERY RUN - Runners and athletes recently participated in the Great South Bay Brewery Run in Patchogue. The ten-mile Run To The Brewery has become a fixture of the South Shore’s running scene, with benefits going to the Greater Sayville Food Pantry and the BULA (Better Understanding of Life in Africa) Foundation. This year’s race saw roughly 1,100 participants.

As part of their science studies, second-grade students at Academy Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District have been learning about the functions and systems of the human body. As a complement to
their classroom work, the students were given the chance to take an in-depth look at the circulatory system when Dr. Danielle DeGaetano visited the building. During the program, Dr. DeGaetano spoke about the heart and blood vessels. She
explained how the heart is responsible for delivering oxygen throughout the body and the reason why blood is either blue or red. At the end of the program, the students received a packet filled with activities to reinforce the subjects covered.

Winter Blahs By: Jamie Lynn Ryan January is probably my least favorite month of all. Apologies to those with birthdays or other milestones that fall within these 31 days, but honestly, it doesn’t seem like anything of any real significance happens in January – save for exorbitant snowfall totals, hazardous driving conditions and a general sense of post-holiday “blah-ness.” Am I wrong? Please tell me if I am. I would love nothing more than to find some redeeming quality for this last month. Other than the initial excitement of starting off a new year with a completely
blank slate, it’s been one endless procession of taking down Christmas decorations, attempting to pack away said decorations in some sort of orderly fashion and then realizing how very empty all the rooms now look. Of course, throw in a couple of significant snowfalls, the digging out that comes with it, one especially tedious fourhour commute home from work – and I’m about ready to hibernate with the groundhog until next spring. That’s quite enough of winter as far as I’m concerned. Perhaps if I was fortunate to sit home and admire the snow from a window until it all melted away… but until then, wake
me when the crocuses sprout. February, while still possessing great blizzard potential, at least brings with it the promise of spring, a progression toward warmth and flower blossoms and longer days… everything that January does not. And there is also, of course, our furry friend the groundhog, that poor little sleep-deprived creature whom we systematically awaken each February 2nd with the hope that his clairvoyance will predict an early spring. Seems sensible enough. And so we bid adieu to January. Goodbye and good riddance, with hopes for only good things come February.

The Interview Process
College interviews are a very daunting concept. So far, I have taken part in three of these alumni interviews. In my very limited experience with the process, it seems that the purpose is to sell the college to you. In addition to asking you questions, the interviewer will go into depth about his experience at the specific institution. He wants you to want to go there. He wants you to follow in his footsteps as an alumnus of College X. Alumni interviews are meant to serve as a judge of your communication competency. Essentially, it has become evident that an interviewer is checking that you can
handle yourself in the real world. No college wants introverts. They want passionate, articulate students. They sift through countless applications to find these lucky boys and girls. If you are really serious about attending a college, an interview is a great way to express your interest. It gives an applicant the chance to blow an interviewer away with an extensive knowledge of the history of the university, the campus or the academics. But even if you have no current interest in College X, it never hurts to keep your options open. Inherently, an interview is nerve wracking. You are being
judged by a stranger that has the power to influence the rest of your life. Who wouldn’t be nervous? When it comes down to it, the interviewer is there to make you feel at ease. There is no need to be anxious, as the interviewer will often lead the conversation and get you through the process. It is their job to ensure that the college has a steady influx of capable young minds. There is nothing you can do to guarantee admission, but an interview is a great place to start. The college is always looking for the best students an interviewer can provide. Both you and the interviewer are merely vessels for advancement.

Advancing To The Next Level Bayport-Blue Point High School’s DECA team members showcased their business-savvy talents during this year’s competition season. As a result of their outstanding performance at the annual DECA Regional Competition, five students have qualified to compete at the New York State DECA

The Glass Menagerie Since it began in 1979 with the works of Ionesco, the Sayville Players Theatre Laboratory, directed by Mr. Steven Hailey, has experimented with character development within a drama or comedy on a minimalist stage. In this year’s production of The Glass Menagerie, held in the Backstage Theatrein-the-Round, three different casts of Sayville Players examined characters who, under the microscope of Tennessee Williams’ artistry, are polished by his rich prose. On a lean set containing a dinner table, an old fashion phone, a typewriter, a few chairs, and a sofa, the audience was asked to imagine some otherwise “invisible” props in the impoverished apartment of the Wingfield family. Yet, there was no need to image the passion and poignancy of people trapped by hardships in the 1930s, thanks to the quality of each evening’s performance. Tom Wingfield, the narrator and dutiful son, recounts in this “memory” play, the pivotal moments leading to his decision to either stay and help care for his fragile
sister or become the writer he dreams of being. Players Liam Haber, Liam Hofmeister, and Tim Costorf mastered Tennessee Williams’ dense dialogue and intensity, yet each actor imbued the role with diverse emphasis and
reminiscing of a woman who has suffered great disappointments in her marriage, her children, and her life. Each delivered an original version of Amanda with intricate nuances, played effectively off her evening’s cast. Tom’s whisper of a sister, Laura, is the focal point of the clashing family dynamic. Isolated by her painful insecurities and as breakable as her glass figurines, disabled Laura is the least “chatty” of all the characters, but performers Angelina Keller, Jessica Leigh Manuell, and Dara Scolnick gave her tangible presence and hope when gentleman caller, Jim O’Connor, praises her unique qualities. Charismatic Jim O’Connor, deftly portrayed by Dalen Ferreira, Brian Walsh, and Sean McNally, has the gift of Irish gab that charms everyone, including the audience, into believing the introverted Laura could be saved, but just as he modulation that was fresh, witty, and compelling. accidentally breaks the glass unicorn, his true plans Playing Amanda, Tom’s mother, Sayville Players shatter all hope. After Sayville students in Mrs. Cindy Giannico’s Long Island Marine Science class went on a field trip to the Sayville Theater to see Captain Phillips (the Hollywood version of the kidnapping by pirates off the coast of Somalia), guest speaker Ted Bernhard, a Merchant Marine Captain, visited to speak about the realities of piracy. Capt. Bernhard spoke
about his experiences on his ship and the seriousness of piracy. He explained the training he is required to practice as safeguards, as well as how his crew needs to react if the ship is taken over by pirates. Capt. Bernhard has been in waters all over the world, but fortunately his current tour - taking cargo from California to Hawaii is, as he states : “the best job in the world!”
The students loved his presentation and had many questions. “Some students came back to me,” Mrs. Giannico said, “and wished he could have stayed longer so that they could have asked him more questions.” To quote another student, representing the consensus of the class, “He was awesome!”

Learning About Careers
Woodhull Elementary School’s Shared Decision Making Committee, a collaboration of parents, teachers and administration, has been working to develop a college and career readiness program aimed at increasing students’ excitement and enthusiasm for higher learning and future employment opportunities. As part of this program, the students had the chance to learn about careers in politics and law when Sen. Phil Boyle visited the school. A lifelong
resident of New York’s Fourth Senate District, Sen. Boyle served several years on Capitol Hill as a senior congressional aide, and was elected to the New York State Senate in November 2012. Prior to his work in the Senate, Sen. Boyle was a founding partner in the law firm of Steinberg & Boyle LLP, as well as an active volunteer firefighter with the Great River Fire Department. Sen. Boyle emphasized to Woodhull students the importance of working at something one enjoys, and spoke about the career

change he made to further help others. The students listened attentively and asked several questions about the job of a state senator and the highlights of Sen. Boyle’s college and career experience. The school’s main goal through such programs is to provide students with the opportunity to meet and speak with successful members of society, thereby better preparing them to be dynamic citizens of today’s everchanging society.

On Wednesday, November 27th, Mrs. Louise Burger, Principal of Connetquot’s alternative high school, brought together students, staff, friends and family for a very special Thanksgiving celebration. “As part of the Family and Consumer Science elective, students learn the basics of planning, preparing and cooking an elaborate festive holiday meal,” said Mrs. Burger. Thanksgiving would be
the occasion to put that training to good use! Students enrolled at the Eastern BOCES Regional Alternative high school program at Connetquot, prepared a mouth-watering Thanksgiving feast that included ham, mashed & sweet potatoes, cornbread, corn on (and off) the cob, broccoli, cranberry sauce as well as a tasty turkey and stuffing! Many of the proud students invited family
and friends to join them for dessert, others were pleased to bring the leftovers home! This last school activity before the extended Thanksgiving weekend allowed the Connetquot students, staff, family and friends to enjoy a special event they would all be thankful for. Mrs. Burger expressed her gratitude to everyone involved in making this Thanksgiving event so special.

Share The Voice, a local charity raising awareness and funds to provide disabled children with adaptive tricycles, was so blessed this season. The organization raised enough money to give away two specially made adaptive tricycles as Christmas gifts to two beautiful young girls! Joined by Manorville Fire Department, Santa and Share the Voice made an important delivery to Ms. Ava Faicco of Mastic. Family and neighbors were already perched out in the street awaiting what they thought was an annual fire truck Santa sighting. Imagine their surprise when the trucks stopped right in front Ava and Santa climbed down! Fire

Free Screenings Available Free lung cancer screenings using low dose CT scans are now available at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital for high risk smokers and former smokers. If lung cancer is diagnosed early there is a higher rate for successful treatment and survival. Individuals should consider having a screening if they are 55 to 74 years old and have smoked for 30 pack years or more and currently smoke or quit within the last 15 years. Pack years are calculated by multiplying the average number of packs of cigarettes smoked per day by the number of years a person has smoked. Lung cancer is the leading single cancer killer in the U.S. and cigarette smoking is the most important risk factor in the development of lung cancer. Smokers and former smokers should talk to their primary care physician to see if they qualify for a free screening. If you qualify, you will be given a prescription
for the CT scan and asked to contact Mather’s Lung Cancer Screening Program at 631.476.2803 to schedule a low dose CT scan. A national study found that patients who were diagnosed by screening with a low dose CT scan had a 20 percent reduction in lung cancer deaths as compared to those screened with standard chest x-ray. An influential panel of medical experts has recommended annual lung cancer screenings for high risk smokers and former smokers. The panel estimated the screenings could prevent as many as 20,000 deaths a year. Mather’s board certified radiologists use an advanced 320-slice CT scanner to perform the test at the lowest possible radiation dose. Mather records and provides you with a copy of your radiation dose. Should you need to return to Mather for another CT scan, we record that dose and track your cumulative exposure. Further, we
are accredited by the American College of Radiology and The Joint Commission, a national organization that assesses healthcare provider quality and patient safety. A suspicious nodule detected by the screening does not necessarily indicate lung cancer. According to current studies more than 95 percent of initially suspicious lung nodules are non-cancerous. Based on the findings, you may be referred to a specialist even if the diagnosis is not lung cancer. Reach Out To LICC According to a briefing released on January 9th, 2014 by the Department of Veteran Affairs, at least 22 veterans commit suicide every day; and young male veterans (under the age of 30) are three times more likely to commit suicide than civilian males in the same age range. The statistics have also increased for
female veterans in all age brackets as well. “Long Island Crisis Center is paying close attention to these numbers,” stated Executive Director Linda Leonard. “One important fact pointed out in the study is that for those veterans receiving care through the VHA, suicide is down by 30 percent.
However, for those veterans not enrolled in a program, suicide has soared by 60 percent. That is truly alarming. We know we can play a pivotal role in helping these veterans receive the help they need.” Officials at the Department of Veteran Affairs do not have definitive reasons
for these disturbing statistics, however, they do point to post traumatic stress disorder, combat injuries and the difficulties facing young veterans in re-entering civilian life. “The Crisis Center’s hotlines are staffed 24 hours a day/7 days a week with highly trained counselors who
can provide short-term counseling, support, and resources and referrals. We are accessible through an online chat, mobile phone texting and walkin-counseling services,” continues Ms. Leonard. “No veteran, no family member, no civilian should think that they are alone and that no one cares. Special Event Scheduled West Sayville Christian School will hold a special event on Wednesday, January 29th, to celebrate National School Choice Week, school leaders announced today. The event will feature an Open House following a special chapel service in which students will read the essays they wrote explaining why they love attending WSCS.
