Squadron Officers Elected The Great South Bay Power Squadron of the United States Power Squadrons has elected its new officers for 2015 at their annual meeting on January 16th. Suzanne Mora, AP, of Oakdale, has been elected as Squadron Commander. Elected to serve with Commander-elect Mora is Joseph Milano, JN, of West Islip, who will be Executive Officer; Richard Fogel, JN, of Islip as Squadron Educational Officer; Arthur Wallach, AP, of Commack as Administrative Officer; Michael Becker, JN, of

Holbrook as Secretary; Steve Potestio, P, of Holbrook as Treasurer; and Jimmy Milton, AP, of Islip Terrace as Asst. Educational officer. The Change of Watch Meeting, installing these officers, will be on Friday, February 27th, at the Rusy-Bohm American Legion Post, Nassau Avenue, Islip, beginning at 8 p.m. C o m m a n d e r- e l e c t Mora is a Squadron Advanced Pilot, of the United States Power Squadrons and served as the Administrative Officer over the past year.

Her previous Squadron responsibilities include being Secretary of the Squadron. Suzanne has received the following educational advancements and awards in the Squadron: achieved the grade of Advanced Pilot in 2014, Pilot in 2013, Seamanship in 2011, and the ABC Boating Course in 2000. She has also earned Educational Proficiency, Cruise Planning, Inland Boat Operations Certification, Skipper Award, Sail, and Operations Training in 2014. She successfully completed Engine

Maintenance and Marine Electrical Systems in 2013 and Weather in 2012. Suzanne also serves as a member of the Marketing Committee for District 3 of the United States Power Squadron. She has earned three Merit Marks with the United States Power Squadrons, which is based on dedication and work that has been accomplished within the Squadron. The United States Power Squadrons is a non-profit organization of boating enthusiasts who have a common interest and appreciation

of recreational boating, boating safety, and education. As a public service, the Power Squadron offers Safe Boating Courses. Through this course, over three million students have already learned how to make their boating safer and more enjoyable. The Great South Bay Power Squadron offers public safe boating courses throughout the year in Islip, Babylon, and Brookhaven Towns. Coat Drive Off To Good Start

On January 16th, Supervisor Ed Romaine stopped by the Brookhaven Youth Bureau Coat Drive drop off location in the lobby of Town Hall to thank staff members Amy Gironda, Josephine Lunde and Lizabeth Derkevics for their efforts to help needy residents stay warm this winter. The Coat Drive began on January 12th and runs

HEROIC EFFORTS - Connetquot Central School District’s Board of Education (BOE) recently recognized Mrs. Christine Tallman, a teacher-aide at the Edward J. Bosti Elementary School in Bohemia for saving the life of a student. State University of New York Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher met with Stony Brook University students January 15th to discuss initiatives that would help maximize the SUNY experience and that would further define students’ expectations. The dialogue gave students a platform to share their feedback with leading voices in higher education, including the New York State Senate’s Higher

Education Committee Chairman, Senator Kenneth P. Lavalle, Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, and Trustee Cary Staller. The intimate audience of about 40 student leaders shared reasons why they chose Stony Brook, which included affordability, value, diversity, tier one research opportunities and reputation. Additionally, the students offered suggestions of ways

Topics included the continuation of SUNY’s study-abroad programs, further definition of finish-in-four initiatives, expansion of online education programs, spoton admission opportunities and continued financial support from New York State for research, student life organizations and student employment.

ATHLETES HELPING ATHLETES - Members of the Connetquot High School Athletes Helping Athletes Club recently visited Edward J. Bosti fifth grade students. Nine members of the club led a variety of team-building activities and explained the advantages of participating extra-curricular programs, such as music and sports. The group was able to rebuild a porch railing for an elderly woman and paint basement walls to renovate a home. The following day, the group continued to work in Breezy Point, where they painted and spackled walls for homes that were damaged in the storm. The third day of work brought the group to the St. John’s Bread & Life Soup Kitchen in Bedford-Stuyvesant, a neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. There, they joined a team of volunteers to help serve more than 1,000 plates of breakfast and lunch to the hungry.

In addition, they were able to fulfill the pantry requests of approximately 125 people, wash dishes and prepare food for mobile meals unit. “For me the most powerful thing was to be able to help people still rebuilding after Superstorm Sandy,” said Angela Vetere ’18, freshman at the Long Island Campus of SJC. “Finding out two years later that people are still rebuilding was a humbling moment, but seeing that Habitat for Humanity of Westchester County is still dedicated to getting people back in their homes made me proud to be working with this organization.” For more information about SJC, visit www. sjcny.edu.

A dedicated group of students from St. Joseph’s College (SJC) opted for an alternative winter break close to home this year, and spent their time helping people in need. “The alternative winter break allowed a group of students to stay in New York and work as a team,” said Patrick Tracy, director of campus ministry on the Long Island Campus of SJC. “We visited various work sites for Habitat for Humanity where we repaired residual damage from Superstorm Sandy. Coordinating and leading service projects like these allow us to see hands-on, real demonstrations of our mission statement.” In early January, a group of eight SJC students and two staff members from both the Long Island and Brooklyn campuses began

(SBPLI) has announced that another round has been added to its FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League (FLL) Qualifying Tournaments. The threeday tournament will take place on January 24th25th at Central Islip High School, which is located at 85 Wheeler Road in Central Islip and January 31st, 2015 at Mineola High School, located at 10 Armstrong Road in Garden

City Park. This year’s challenge is FLL World Class, in which children in elementary and middle school will work on ways to improve the learning experience of others on a topic of their choice using technology. The FLL Tournament is an international, annual sports-like challenge for children ages nine to 14 to test their creative robotic skills by using science and technology with the help of adult mentors. The competition is similar to the FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC), where high school students design robots to compete
