The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York (MYO) is proud to present the top ten finalists of the 2016 Concerto and Vocal Competition in a concert on Wednesday, January 27th, at 7 p.m. in the Congregational Church of Huntington, 30 Washington Drive, Centerport, NY 11721. The concert is free and open to the public. vocalist, will win a cash award in the amount of $500 each. There will also be cash awards for the 2nd ($200) and 3rd ($100) place winners, in both the instrumental and vocal categories. The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York (MYO) is committed to fostering a community of talented young musicians from Long Island and providing them with an opportunity to rehearse and perform orchestral and choral masterworks at the highest possible level with recognized leaders in music education and performance. Founded in the fall of 1993 by John C. McNeur, MYO has grown from one orchestra of fifteen members to seven orchestras, a flute choir, and seven choral ensembles, serving over 990 young musicians between the ages of 8 and 18. At this time of year, parents are registering their four-year-olds for kindergarten in the fall. They may be asking themselves “will my child be ready?” Answers to that question can be found in a one-page handout from the Long Island Pre-K Initiative. This free resource lists the top 20 skills that kindergarten teachers expect on the first day of school. It can be downloaded from the grant-funded program’s website: www.nassauboces. org/pre-k, and is available in Spanish, Urdu, Turkish, Chinese and HaitianCreole, as well as in English. “We surveyed more than 100 kindergarten teachers from 10 Long Island school districts,” says Lucinda Hurley, Executive Director of the Nassau BOCES Department of Strategic Initiatives and administrator for

the Long Island Pre-K Initiative. “And there was clear agreement. What educators call ‘socialemotional skills’ are very important.” That means that kindergarteners should be able to share and take turns, express their feelings in words and participate in a conversation without interrupting, among other abilities. It is difficult for learning to take place when children have difficulty getting along with each other - or can’t sit still long enough to listen to a story being read. Also on the list: pre-reading skills; everyday skills, such as using the bathroom by themselves; and being able to identify numbers and colors. The Long Island Pre-K Initiative survey was conducted in the spring of 2015. The teachers came from the following 10 school districts: Amityville, Franklin

Square, Harborfields, Levittown, Long Beach, Middle Country, North Merrick, Valley Stream #13, Uniondale and Wyandanch. Some survey questions were based on an earlier survey of teachers in Westbury that was conducted by The Early Years Institute. The Long Island Pre-K Initiative is a grant-funded project that seeks to strengthen relationships between school districts and community-based organizations, and to share information about research, policy and best practices for early learning. Administered by Nassau BOCES, it is supported by expertise from The Early Years Institute and funds from the Rauch and Hagedorn Foundations. Its partners are the Eastern and Western Suffolk BOCES and the Child Care Councils of Nassau and Suffolk.

My First Blizzard Winter is coming. Winter is coming. So the humans have been saying for the last three months, and yet… only now, in the final week of January, have I gotten to witness firsthand this magical white stuff in action. And what a beauty it is, even from the confines of my tiny betta bowl. Swirling snowflakes, blowing through the air, piling up outside my window to the outside world… and my human, fervently shoveling out her electric blue car – what a fine color it is, I might add – as the wind whips across the parking lot. But still, the opportunity

to hibernate with my human for an entire weekend, to have her undivided attention while we relaxed together and watched Netflix on the couch – that was priceless. We just finished Season 1 of House of Cards and I’m already, excuse the pun, “hooked.” I must admit, I didn’t understand the obsession with scouring the stores for every last container of milk, carton of eggs and loaf of bread at first. But then I realized the horror of not being able to make French toast for an entire day, and I understood the magnitude of such a storm and the havoc it could wreak on the masses. Just the thought of a day without flakes was

enough to drive my fins into a frenzy. Add to that the hazards of commuting, and it’s no wonder humans have so much anxiety at the first forecast of a flake. Me, I have trouble navigating around my plant when the water gets a little cloudy. I have the frayed fins to prove it. I understand this may be only the beginning of the winter weather. So far, not so bad. I’m just keeping my fins crossed that there are no major storms headed this way for February 16th – my very first betta birthday in my human’s home. I expect a big turnout for my party… and presents… and extra flakes of course… Just not of the snow variety.

Kickoff Event The Helen Keller National Center for DeafBlind Youths & Adults (HKNC) jump-started its annual Helen’s Run/Walk this week with a kick-off breakfast at its Sands Point

for this year’s Helen’s Run/Walk, which will take place on Sunday, April 17th, at the Sands Point Preserve. Words of inspiration were provided by HKNC Assistant

Program Coordinator Maricar Marquez, followed by insights on getting healthy and motivated from nutritional health counselor and Sands Point resident Sara Siskind.

Veterans Assistance Programs Islip Town Councilman John Cochrane, Jr., wishes to remind local veterans of the many services that the Town of Islip can provide to those who have served our country. Councilman Cochrane - a Navy veteran - has spearheaded the Town’s efforts to better serve those who have protected our nation. One of the latest programs is the PFC Joseph R. Dwyer Project, a PTSD support service group aimed at helping veterans cope with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The program, which began in 2015, has met with success and praise by the veteran community. “PTSD impacts many

veterans returning from overseas deployments and can have a serious and detrimental effect on their lives,” said Councilman Cochrane. “This is a unique program that can make a real difference and provide support to those who have sacrificed so much.” The PFC Joseph R. Bosti Elementary School C-Quest 5th graders recently invited local author and Connetquot High School Class of 1988 graduate Patrice Domozych to talk about her books, her craft and to help students develop their writing skills. During her presentation, Domozych spoke about her new book, “Hope is

Here to Stay,” which tells the story of 12 year old Lauren Loose’s battle with pediatric cancer and Lauren’s efforts to help others fighting the same illness. Using drawings, a slide show and her book, Patrice talked about Lauren and the other children who face serious challenges in their lives. She also talked about Lauren’s First and Goal Foundation, which

provides financial and emotional support for families whose children are affected by pediatric cancer. More than $800,000 has been raised toward the goal of finding a cure for the disease. Teens for Jeans The Town of Islip Youth Bureau and their youth service agency, Youth Enrichment Services, have once again joined forces with local school districts to collect jeans for the national “Teens for Jeans” Campaign. The Islip Youth Bureau is encouraging residents, community and school groups and businesses to support the Teens for Jeans campaign by donating new or used jeans in good condition (any size) at one of Islip’s local drop-off sites between January 29th and February 26th. Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School Boys Basketball Coach Kyle Black recently announced the successful conclusion to the team’s holiday food drive. The players set up collection tables at the local Meat Farms, and CVS stores and asked the community for its support.

Five SUV’s were filled with donations which were then taken to the food pantry at St. John Nepomucene Church and the Having Friends Inn Soup Kitchen. The food drive was hosted alongside ‘Basketball Day’ with Oakdale-Bohemia & Ronkonkoma Middle Schools playing an inter-

squad game, while the varsity and junior varsity teams played local rival Smithtown East High School. Connetquot High School Boys Basketball players have also donated $250 to the American Cancer Society in support of the ‘Coaches vs Cancer’ program.

Robot Demo Connetquot Central School District’s OakdaleBohemia Middle School (OBMS) Principal Ms. Suzanne Bailey and district STEM Chairperson Dr. Mary Loesing recently welcomed Suffolk County Police Officers Sheridan and Monaco to the campus to demonstrate robotics tools they use in investigations. The officers showed the

Robotics Club three robots they use to search for explosives and minimize the danger of injuries to officers and civilians alike. Students were able to use a remote control to operate one of the robots, manipulating its robotic arm to grasp and rotate a door handle. The purpose of this event was to enable students interested in a

Zombies Attack competing against the “zombie” team which tried to obtain the flags. During the race, the individuals who have lost all their flags got ZOMBIFIED! The Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children (CFAC) is a non-profit organization which provides financial grants to teachers and district schools to purchase equipment and supplies, support special assemblies and training which directly

benefits the students of the Connetquot school district. Since its inception, the CFAC has awarded well over $120,000 in support of school district efforts to enhance the educational opportunities for Connetquot’s children. Over 99% of the funds raised by the CFAC are returned directly for the benefit of the students of the Connetquot Central School District.

Donations Pile Up Sylvan Avenue Elementary School fifth-grade peer leaders organized a “Souper Bowl” themed food drive during the month of January.

Throughout the effort, each grade level competed to collect the most nonperishable canned goods. The school tracked the grades’ progress on a

Connetquot School District’s Connetquot High School Anti-Bullying Club students and advisors recently posted thousands of colorful Post-It notes with positive messages in hallways and classrooms as part of their annual Positive Post-It Monday. The students’ idea was to bring smiles to the faces of students, teachers and

staff members throughout the school, and to spread warmth as winter really kicks in. Not only did each student receive his or her own Post-It note, but many students shared their positive messages with their friends. Connetquot Central School District’s (CCSD) Board of Education recently recognized local District teachers for their outstanding achievements in education.
