Blue Ribbon Nomination As a result of their past documented successes, Bayport-Blue Point High School has been nominated by the New York State Education Department for one of the nation’s highest educational honors – the Blue Ribbon Award. Who is Paying for the Increases? By: Jeff Lambert jlambert@southbaysneighbor.com
We all deal with increases in expenses all the time. We recently learned that the minimum wage was increased to $10.00 per hour in our area, and it will continue to increase to up to $15.00 per hour by 2021. These types of increases are a result of decisions from our elected officials. On the surface, many people think this is good and fair; but when you delve deeper, you may find that it might not be so good after all. All businesses, including small businesses, must now figure out a way to deal with these increased costs. They now must decide how much of these costs their business can absorb and how much must now be passed on to the consumer. Many businesses are
still dealing with the large increases in their health care costs. Many businesses will be forced to eliminate positions, as well as minimize some of their services. Ultimately, it is the consumer who will be adversely affected by all of this. Let’s all hope for better days ahead! We have an opportunity with our new administration to cut the size of government and its excessive spending and waste. We have an opportunity to limit government control and waste in many areas such as healthcare, education, student loans and social service benefits. Able Americans should be in control of their own destinies, working and earning their own way in this world, and not
being enabled to rely on government handouts which ultimately become yet another cost to all of us hard working taxpayers. Government assistance is meant for those who are truly in need of and deserving of the help. These less fortunate Americans are the only ones who should be allowed to benefit from these costly government services. So, if you find yourself having to pay more for a product or service, or you seem to be waiting longer and longer for assistance in places of business or of government service, realize where this all started, and who is paying for all the wasteful government spending. It is US, THE TAXPAYERS.

Finding Zen By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
I recently found out that my yoga studio, the one I have been frequenting for the last several years, will be closing come the end of February. Sure, there are other studios, other forms of meditation that can be explored; but this was my studio, the one I had come to regard as a sanctuary of sorts, a respite from the oftstressful daily grind. When I began taking classes there, some three or four years ago, my goal was to attend one, two – even three – sessions per week, at all different levels, in an effort to explore this newfound hobby. I had originally decided to look into the practice after
“retiring” from dancing for the previous 20 years, and determined that yoga would be the perfect combination of strength and conditioning, balance and relaxation, that I needed. Of course, my grand plans eventually dwindled down to about once a week, as I found a regular class that I loved. Every Wednesday (or as many as I could manage to make it to), I would look forward to those 75 minutes of guided technique and mental cleansing. Certainly, anyone can undertake the basic yoga stretches and breathing techniques on his/her own; but there is definitely something about a structured class which brings a whole new level to
the practice. And so, come March, I will need to find a new venue to attend, a new haven to explore this ancient ritual, which has so very many benefits in the modern world. How glad I am that I ventured into that particular studio all those years ago, and how very appreciative I am of the community of fellow “yogis” that I have come to know and respect. Here’s hoping that I find a new home for my hobby, one as welcoming and fulfilling and full of inspiration. ‘Til then, I shall savor these remaining weeks in my old familiar studio, surrounded by familiar faces; and I shall take a deep breath and appreciate all the goodness yoga has brought to my life.

Notably, each year multiple Bayport-Blue Point High School students are recognized for attaining high performance scores on AP exams and earn coveted honors from the College Board. These awards have included such titles as AP Scholar, AP Scholar with Honor, AP Scholar with Distinction and National AP Scholar Award; each of which is based on the number of exams a student takes and their related scores on the courses’ exams. “I am proud of the hard work of our students and their teachers, as this recognition speaks to
the support and quality of instruction our students are exposed to at BayportBlue Point High School,” said Principal Dr. Gaurav Passi. “The primary goal of our high school is to prepare or students to be successful adults – a responsibility that we take very seriously – and deeply believe that students who want to challenge themselves in college level courses should be afforded the opportunity to do so. Across the board, our students are working to achieve higher personal expectations than ever
before while exploring topics of interest through our varied academic offerings.” To date, the district offers 19 Advanced Placement programs; a growth of nearly 46 percent since 2013 when the district offered 13 courses. In 2015-2016, 282 students challenged college level courses and sat for 532 AP exams. Both represent a steady increase from 2013-2014 when the district had 174 students sit for 327 exams.

PAL Program The Suffolk County Police Athletic League is offering a Basketball Program for children between the ages of 8-15. This program is designed to teach basic basketball skills for children with varying levels of experience. This program will run on Tuesday and Wednesday nights starting February 28th and running through April 26th, from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. Volunteers from the
Patchogue Medford Community will provide basketball skills instruction to each child enrolled in the program. This program will be held in the gymnasium of Medford Ave Elementary School in Patchogue. Registration will take place at the Patchogue Medford Library at 5460 East Main Street in Patchogue on Friday, February 17th, from 5 to 8 p.m.; Saturday, February
18th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Monday, February 20th, from 5 to 8 p.m. The Registration Fee for this program is $10. PAL will provide players with a PAL T-shirt. Duffield Elementary School were recently visited by Recycling Educator Danielle Wynn, from the Islip Town Department of Environmental Control, for a lesson on the environmental benefits of recycling. Ms. Wynn demonstrated to students how they could make their own paper by using scraps, water, food coloring, glitter and a blender. Additionally, she displayed pencils made from recycled paper, and T-shirts fashioned from recycled plastic. “With the recent implementation of the Leader in Me program

Lesson Learned Cherokee Elementary School fifth-graders enrolled in Lauren Isleman’s music class in the Connetquot Central School District recently learned an important lesson regarding one of the nation’s most highly regarded civil rights activists, Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. As an introduction to the history of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, students lent their ears to Poet James Weldon Johnson’s 1899 hymn, “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Students learned that the song was written to spread the general message of
freedom, hope and the importance of racial equality. After they practiced singing the song, students formed groups and physically acted out the message that their respective verse was meant to convey.
