Artistic Exploration As a complement to the classroom curriculum, Sachem High School North art students took an upclose look at several famous pieces of artwork during a recent field trip to the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington. The exhibit included Andy Warhol, who conceptualized the Pop Art movement, and Romare Bearden, who was a pioneer of African-

American art in the 20th century. Students viewed pieces from each famous artist as they came together in groups to discuss the works of art and share their thoughts. Their submitted artwork must be inspired by a piece of art currently on exhibit at the museum and must be accompanied by an artist’s statement. The artist’s statement should reflect the connection between the work on exhibit and their own creation. If selected, their work will hang in the Heckscher Museum of Art from March 17th to April 15th, 2018. The evaluators for the contest are interested in the art students’ thought process and what inspired each student to create their own piece. They want to see how the

creativity, interpretation and exploration are endless. Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at the Heckscher Museum is the only juried art competition on Long Island that offers high school students the opportunity to show their

artwork in a museum setting. More than 40 schools will submit over 400 works of art, and from those submissions, only about 85 pieces will actually make it into the show.

Creating Connections Collective conversations fostered connections as Samoset Middle School students in the Sachem Central School District interacted with teachers and building administration outside of the traditional classroom structure during a recent program. As part of the Making Connections initiative proposed by Principal James Horan, the building leadership team organized

the event as a chance for teachers and students to converse in a different setting. After enjoying breakfast, attendees divided into groups and participated in an activity that involved passing around a numbered beach ball with six corresponding questions. Members of the group passed the ball among themselves and depending on what number was facing them answered a question

from the prepared list. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Graham was also in attendance during the event and eagerly joined in with a group to participate in the activity. The focus of the program was to enhance communication within each group and facilitate relationships between building administrators, teachers and students.

Talent Recognized The Bayport-Blue Point School District congratulates three talented Bayport-Blue Point High School student-musicians for being selected to participate in the Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association’s All-County Jazz Ensembles. Students Alisa Barsch

and Connor Teague were selected to participate in the SCMEA All-County Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and Andrew Shiebler was selected to perform in the SCMEA All-County Instrumental Jazz Ensemble. All three were selected based on a showcase of their immense talents during

a solo audition as well as improvisation. “We are most proud to have Alisa, Andrew and Connor represent BayportBlue Point High School at such a prestigious festival,” said BayportBlue Point Arts and Music Chairperson Paul Weber.

Exploring Mars Few events in the last decade of space exploration have captured the world’s imagination like NASA’s ongoing Mars Exploration Program. In 2004, the successful deployment of the Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity launched a new era of scientific investigation of our nearest neighbor. On Tuesday, February 6th at 7 p.m., the Cradle is proud to present an evening with NASA engineer, Kobie Boykins. For Boykins, a mechanical engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Rover’s success was also a personal triumph: he helped design and build the solar arrays that enabled the Rovers to keep going long after their planned 90-day life. Boykins is also intimately involved with the latest venture to Mars, as

supervisor of the mobility and remote sensing mast teams for the Mars Science Laboratory, better known as Curiosity. Curiosity landed on Mars and has made headlines with evidence that conditions on Mars, including the presence of water, once could have supported life. For work on this and other compelling projects, Bokins received a NASA Exceptional Service Medal, one of the highest honors given to NASA employees and contractors. Boykins’ boundless enthusiasm for unraveling the mysteries of outer space, and Mars in particular, is infectious. Lifesaving Skills Sachem Middle School students are ready to react when it comes to emergency situations, thanks to a districtwide CPR initiative, which started in 1988. For 30 years, seventhgrade students throughout the Sachem Central School District middle schools have been learning a wide variety of lifesaving skills. Within their health education classes, students learn the proper CPR procedure, the Heimlich

Maneuver for choking situations and how to use an automated external defibrillator in the case of a cardiac arrest. They begin by surveying the situation, designating a bystander to call for help and then beginning emergency care once they assess the patient’s condition. Using lifelike CPR manikins, the students also practice effective chest compression depth, cadence and how to deliver rescue breaths.

“This class creates the next generation of lifesavers,” said Chairperson for Secondary Health Education Lori Hewlett. “This initiative prepares our students for emergency situations and empowers them with lifesaving skills.” After the completion of a written and practical certification exam, each student receives an official CPR certification card from the American Heart Association.

LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless. After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered nonprofit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help. Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www. LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan

mentioned to me that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. Serious wedding style for short-haired brides Women with short hair may lament that they do not have many options when styling their hair for their wedding days. Some may even consider growing out their locks. However, plenty of creative styles exist for ladies without long locks.

Brides may want to harken back to an era when glamour reigned supreme. Replicate one of the short styles of the 1940s or 1950s, paying homage to Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Lauren Bacall or Judy Garland.

Braids can add whimsy to shoulder-length or shorter hair. In addition, braids can anchor short locks when an up-do is desired. Braids can be placed into the front or rear crown of the head to look like a hair halo or crown.

Use embellishments

If short hair cannot be gathered into a braid or bun, you can opt for adorned pins, barrettes or headbands to add a touch of sparkle to the look. Ask a stylist to tease the crown of your hair to achieve a little more height and impact.

Half-up style

Many women with short hair ﬁnd that using bobby pins to pin up select areas of their hair can help achieve a partial up-do look without the need for longer locks. Experienced stylists will know how to manipulate hair effectively to create this look. Small tendrils of hair can be left free and curled for a less structured, more natural effect. Traditionally, one of the more memorable aspects of wedding receptions is the food. Whether it was fun, tasty or something entirely new for guests, food tends to leave a lasting impression. The experts at Boho Weddings say that, more than ever before, couples are seeking menu ideas that reﬂect their personalities as a couple as they seek to make a statement at their events. Celebrating with delicious, unique foods can make receptions that much more amazing.

Bite-sized bursts

Tapas and a movement toward small bites has started to take hold at wedding receptions. Such a choice allows guests to try many different flavors without filling up too quickly. Couples may want to give guests a taste of the lavish with olive oil and vinegar tasting stations, whiskey bars, French hors d’oeuvres, Kobe beef sliders, lobster tails, risotto stations and more.

Childhood favorites

When it comes time for dessert, some couples opt to avoid or downplay wedding cakes in favor of something simpler. A cookie-and-milk bar, doughnut holes, soft pretzel stations, pie pops or dessert shot jars push creativity and sweetness to new levels. Do-it-yourself dessert stations, such as s’more-making and ice cream sundae stations, also can be big hits. Couples are increasingly feeling less beholden to traditional wedding reception menus as they look to infuse their personal tastes into the foods they plan to serve their guests. Mackenzie, who has been playing volleyball since a young age, led the T-Birds to a 39-1-2 record and the Class AA state championship this past season. In addition, she also contributed toward the team’s state championship title during the 2015-2016 season. A 2017-2018 Under Armour First Team AllAmerican, Mackenzie recorded 333 kills, 292 digs and 74 service aces. The Long Island Player

of the Year, she was also named a First Team AllAmerican by FloVolleyball and earned First Team AllState honors for the third consecutive season. As a Gatorade Player of the Year, Mackenzie will be able to select a national or local youth sports organization to receive a grant as part of the Gatorade Play It Forward program. Every Gatorade Player of the Year state winner receives a $1,000 grant to donate and will have the opportunity to enter for an additional $10,000 spotlight grant by writing a brief essay explaining why their selected organization deserves additional support. Mackenzie has maintained an A average in the classroom. Additionally, she has signed a national letter of intent to play volleyball on scholarship at Duke University this fall. The mission of the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation is to provide tuition assistance for families who want their children to attend a Catholic elementary school, but need financial help to make it possible. The Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation solicits donations from individuals and corporations, and Twenty-seven high school students from nine school districts visited Brookhaven National Lab (BNL) recently for the Partners in Science Program, an annual event cosponsored each year by Eastern Suffolk BOCES School Library System and the internationally renowned research facility. Partners in Science is a program that grants select high school students working on approved science projects access to the vast BNL scientific database of reference and research materials. The day began with a presentation by one of the lab’s biophysical chemists followed by a tour of the National Synchrotron

Light Source II (NSLSII). The NSLS-II is one of the world’s most advanced synchrotron light sources, designed to produce x-rays 10,000 times brighter than BNL’s original light source, the NSLS. Its purpose is to provide extremely bright x-rays for basic and applied research in biology and medicine, materials and chemical sciences, geosciences and environmental sciences, and nanoscience. Next, the research librarian gave an orientation to students on how to navigate the facility’s enormous directory of research materials. Students were then permitted to research and download materials for their own

projects, all of which were vetted prior to receiving approval to participate in the program. (Students do not have access to this information outside of the lab.) Scientists and students then dined together during lunch to encourage interaction and free conversation. Said Carl Vitevitch, Eastern Suffolk BOCES administrative coordinator for the School Library System, “Partners in Science makes it possible for science students to meet and engage with scientists at one of the world’s most high-profile labs, hopefully inspiring them to pursue careers in the industry.”

Winning Design

The Connetquot Central School District would like to congratulate Connetquot High School junior Diana Gifford for designing the winning logo in a recent graphic design competition hosted by the Connetquot High School Music Department. The winning

submission, which reads “Connetquot Art & Music” by incorporating musical notes and artistic elements, is going to be showcased on the district website for all to see. The OakdaleRonkonkoma-Bohemia Boosters for the Arts organization presented Diana with a $25 iTunes

Five Cents, Please Seen at the local supermarket last week: a gentleman piling each one of his items into his cart, refusing to pay the 5¢ plastic bag fee that was recently passed in Suffolk County. “Nope,” he shook his head vigorously. “I’ll throw it all in my backseat and carry every single item into my house by hand if I have to.” The checkout clerk, somewhat perplexed, acquiesced. “Alright,” she replied politely. “Whatever you’d prefer - that’s why we ask if you’d like a bag.” As he rolled his overflowing shopping cart away, fellow clerks exchanged raised eyebrows and shrugged. “It’s one thing when they have a handful of items, but $300 worth of food and perishables?” She seemed incredulous. “That’s really standing on principle.”

The clerk went on to list the bizarre scenarios she had witnessed over these last several weeks - from people juggling glass bottles (an attempt which, needless to say, didn’t end so well) to the woman who insisted on cradling about 5 pounds of meat in her arms. All to save a nickel. I have to admit, I was only vaguely aware that this proposed law was set to take effect until I found myself running into the store for some last minute New Year’s Eve snacks. Only then did I see the signs warning of the impending surcharge posted at each register, plastered on every entrance and exit, along with racks of “reusable” plastic bags for sale at each counter. I did some quick math: so, if I buy an allegedly sturdier bag for 10¢ - assuming I get more than two uses out of it, I’ll be

ahead of the game. I considered further the fact that, nearly every time I am in any sort of store but especially those of the supermarket variety - I am repeatedly amazed at the lack of, shall we say, bagging skills employed by most clerks. I invariably wind up with either 27 bags with one or two items in each, or the equally daunting 20 pound bag filled to the brim and unlikely to make it to the car without breaking, let alone up a flight of stairs into my apartment. I’ll bag my own, thanks, I always request. And now, if I’m going to pay for them, you can be sure I’ll be taking matters into my own hands. Preferably without an armful of glass bottles and pork chops to contend with as well. Just when food shopping was beginning to become routine…

Sheriff Toulon addressed the crowd during an inaugural speech in which he pledged to devote considerable resources

to upgrading technology, equipment and training for staff. He also emphasized his goal to enhance “multiagency informationsharing and intelligence gathering” directed at ridding the county of gang violence and the drug epidemic. He outlined a comprehensive list of priorities, some of which he has already initiated since taking over the post on January 1st, including: · A collaboration with one of the county’s largest health providers to address the growing number of addicts cycling in and out of the county correctional facility · Strengthening discharge planning for those who are 60 days from re-entering our communities

· The creation of a Task Force to find ways to prevent people with chronic mental illness from cycling in and out of the jail by connecting them to case management services prior to their release · Working with citizens, local agencies, and state and federal partners to improve public safety · A program to help the business community better protect themselves, their businesses, and their employees from robberies fueled by the escalating opioid epidemic He concluded the speech with the promise, “I am ready to work.
