The Bayport-Blue Point School District has partnered with Long Islandbased tech giant Future Tech Enterprise, Inc. to support the next chapter of the schools’ “Thinking Forward” vision plan. Working in tandem, the district will benefit from the globally recognized, full-service IT solution provider’s expertise as it develops plans for its nextgeneration classrooms and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) initiatives. In the coming months, the company will aid in the redesign of those classrooms targeted to house the new computer science and engineering programs (beginning in 2015-2016) at Bayport-Blue Point High School. The partnership, valued at $250,000, will continue over the next five years, during which the company has vowed to provide technology consulting, design/implementation support and services. The Snooze Button By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The snooze button. That wonderful option to roll over and drift back to sleep for just a few more minutes, or hours, apparently. Hence, why it is now 5 p.m. on deadline day and I am just beginning to formulate a column. Well, some semblance of one anyway. So what has everyone been doing this winter to keep occupied now that the holiday rush is officially over? Catching up on a little reading, maybe? Some TV series binge watching, perhaps? I, personally, am guilty of both vices, having

made it my mission to complete the entire five volume series of Game of Thrones before the next season premiere, which… well, let’s just say, at nearly 1,000 pages per volume, is looking a bit overly optimistic at the moment. Of course, if I didn’t spend every spare hour binging on old episodes of Gilmore Girls on Netflix, all seven seasons of it, that would probably speed the process along, but… there’s just something about reliving the innocence of my high school and college days whilst living the madness of being an adult. (Speaking of, I don’t think people use terms like “hence”

and “whilst” quite enough, don’t you agree? A column topic for another time.) In any case, winter isn’t so bad if you know how to fill your time. And if vegetating on the couch is the best option, go with it. The long, dark nights, the bonechilling temperatures… all great reasons to curl up with a giant mug of hot chocolate (with extra marshmallows) and a blanket. Just try not to let the hours get away from you, as, before you know it, the birds begin chirping and it’s time to rise and shine and do it all again. Of course, there’s always the snooze button if you need a few extra minutes.

Keep Islip Clean marked its 25th Anniversary in December with a celebration hosted by the Seatuck Environmental Association at the historic Scully Estate in Islip. Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi recognized students from Connetquot High School’s habitat for Humanity Club for raising $4,000 to help Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk build a new home in Mastic Beach for a needy family.

Students also participated in Optimum Community’s Charity Champions program which donated an additional $1,500. Optimum Community is a Cablevision initiative. The students plan to continue fundraising for this cause

for the remainder of the year. As part of the partnership between the Connetquot School District, Optimum Community and habitat for Humanity of Suffolk, the students actually participate in the building process.

Recently, Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center was the recipient of Splashes of Hope therapeutic murals commissioned by local philanthropist and Good Samaritan Benefactor Theresa Patnode Santmann. Splashes of Hope is a non-profit organization

that creates artwork in medical settings as tools for pain management, therapeutic distraction, soothing visualization, and focal points during necessary procedures. The murals are located in the hallway and family waiting room of the open heart surgery unit, in the waiting room of

the Theresa Patnode Santmann Center for Cardiovascular Services, and in the hallway leading to the Catheterization Labs. The newly “Splashed” suite at Good Samaritan Hospital will bring smiles to the faces of patients, staff and visitors.

Students in Deirdre Kroupa’s Health Related Occupations, a special career program for special education students from Eastern Suffolk BOCES Islip Career Center partnered with the Hilton Garden Inn in Ronkonkoma in a work study experience. Kroupa said, “In the Health Related Occupations Program, students are introduced to the roles and responsibilities of nurse assistants, dietary aides, physical therapy aides,

administrator’s, clerical and housekeeping aides. The students were thrilled to have the opportunity to do hands-on work at the Hilton Garden Inn.” They applied their skills working in the dining room, kitchen, laundry, environmental services, front desk, and set-up and dismantled large group events. Kroupa said, “The students learned that there are crossover job opportunities at a large organization like the Hilton Garden Inn.”

Staff members at the facility were very pleased with the level of work ethic and professionalism of the students and the students were proud of the work they did. “We want the students to thrive; and by participating in the work study experience, they get to find out first-hand how the skills and knowledge they are learning at ESBOCES can be applied at entrylevel positons at a place like Hilton Garden Inn,” said Kroupa.

The world of journalism was at the fingertips of Kim Rall’s fourthgrade class at Academy Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District when they recently crafted original pieces for Newsday’s Kidsday section. Working under the guidance of Newsday Editor Pat Mullooly,

students created jokes, puzzles, surveys and articles on a wide array of topics, including Flo’s Luncheonette to book review on unreleased titles. In the coming weeks, several students will travel to New York City to conduct an interview with a yet-to-be-named celebrity. The venture
