Connetquot Dedicates Wrestling Room For Unprecedented Coaching Team The Connetquot High School wrestling room has been renamed the Bill Santoro/Anthony Melfi Wrestling Room after a dedication held for the duo on Dec. 22. The naming occurred during Alumni Night in which more than 50 alumni wrestlers, who graduated from the program as early as 1962, stood on the perimeter of the wrestling mat in respect for the cherished coaches. Director of Health, Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation Peter Melore introduced the alumni and coaches to the community. “There is no better evidence out there as to how special this coaching partnership has been and the impact they have made to so many young people over the years than the fact that so many alumni are proud to have been a part of the program and have come back to support the program,” Mr. Melore said during his introduction. Head coach Bill Santoro has coached Connetquot student-wrestlers for 44 years, making him Long Island’s number one coach in terms of seniority. Coach Santoro was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2012. Anthony Melfi has also served as assistant coach for the varsity team for 33 consecutive years. He was Connetquot’s first county champion and a two-time All-State wrestler. No other Connetquot High School coaching duo has worked together for this period of time and, under their partnership, the team has garnered a .728 Dual Meet winning percentage. In the past 17 years, the team has secured 13 league titles and is third on Suffolk County Wrestling’s AllTime Wins list. The team has secured 40 winning season records in 43 years. The athletes’

individual records have also been impressive with 113 receiving AllCounty designations, 14 receiving All-State designations, 15 Suffolk County champions, six New York State finalists and two NYS champions. Additionally, 31 former Connetquot High School wrestlers have become wrestling coaches. “They have done this with good old fashioned toughness, consistency, hard work and stamina and staying true to old school principles, while evolving and adapting to modern day issues,” Mr. Melore said about the coaches. “Another word for this is grit. No, gimmick, no shortcuts, no magic. They care more about developing young people than winning.” Coach Santoro told the community, “When you have the horses, you win the race. I have always had the horses and standing in front of me are some of the toughest to take the mat.” He continued, “Winning is nice, but it is great seeing the kids I coached grow up.” Coach Melfi described the renaming of the wrestling room “humbling and unexpected.” He said, “I am doing what I love. Developing kids is the icing on the cake.”

WNBA basketball player Arella Guirantes recently stopped by her alma mater, Bellport High School, to cheer on the boys varsity basketball team as they took on Huntington High School. Guirantes is a 2016

Bellport High School graduate who was rated the No. 44 player in the nation while playing high school basketball. She committed to playing for the Texas Tech Lady Raiders, for whom she scored an average 9.9 points per

game. She moved on to Rutgers Business School, where she averaged 12.1 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. In 2021, she was the 22nd pick in the WNBA draft by the Los Angeles Sparks.

Co-Workers Donate Toys And Send Cards To Neighbors Across Long Island

The holidays were a little brighter across Long Island, thanks to the generosity and thoughtfulness of PSEG Long Island employees. By participating in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program, an employee-led toy drive and a holiday greeting card campaign, dozens of coworkers helped spread cheer and hope this holiday season for neighbors in need. More than 120 co-workers fulfilled holiday wishes for 105 Suffolk County children enrolled in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program. From bikes, tablets and video games, to toys, dolls and action figures, several hundred gifts were donated in all. A handful of PSEG Long Island employees also helped distribute the goodies and load clients’ vehicles the week before Christmas at the Salvation Army’s Riverhead headquarters. Here’s what some employees said about participating: “I am happy to carry on this tradition that my family started when I was a kid,” said Ashley Arndt of Dix Hills. “We always sponsored a family in need and it felt so good to support these sweet

boys and girls. I am thankful that PSEG Long Island is committed to supporting our community and helping our neighbors and friends. This company makes it easy to help so many diverse people across Long Island.” “Being raised by a single mom of three children, I remember how important it was for my mom to have access to a program like this that would allow for a few more gifts to be put under the tree on Christmas morning, said Brittney Schmidt of Smithtown. “I am happy that now I’m able to give to other families. I am also grateful to work for a company that values the importance to giving back to our communities.” “Participating in the Salvation Army Angel Tree Program over the years has always been a rewarding experience that brings to light the spirit of Christmas,” said Diane Finocchio of Farmingdale. “I’ve been supporting the Angel Tree program since my start with PSEG Long Island,” said Krysten Acevedo of Center Moriches. “I do it because I hate the idea of a child waking up on Christmas

morning to nothing under their tree and wondering what it was they did to get on Santa’s naughty list.” The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program serves Long Island children from newborn to 16 years old, and relies on the support of individual donors, companies and organizations to make lasting impressions by fulfilling the wish lists of children and families who might otherwise not receive gifts. During the past eight years, PSEG Long Island employees have donated presents to more than 1,200 families who live in the company’s service area. It’s just one of the many ways in which the company gives back to the community. An employee-led toy collection drive was also hosted. More than $1,600 in dolls, board games, electronic toys, trucks, gift cards and more were given to the following organizations to distribute to local children and their families: In Suffolk County: • Bellport Hagerman East Patchogue Alliance in Bellport • Family Service League in Mastic •First Presbyterian Church of Northport • Gerald Ryan Outreach Center in Wyandanch • Lighthouse Mission in Bellport • Sunshine Alternative

holiday cheer in the form of greeting cards. Nearly 1,000 PSEG Long Island employees participated, offering their own personal holiday messages in the cards that featured the image of a snowy PSEG Long Island bucket truck. The cards were delivered along with candy canes, LED night lights or large print puzzle books to the organizations above, as well as the following: • The Bristal Assisted Living communities across the area • EAC Network Senior Community Service Center in North Merrick and distributed through the agency’s Meals on Wheels program • Glen Cove Senior Center • Glen Cove YMCA • Northport Veterans

Connetquot’s boys’ basketball coach Kyle Black was hoping to get back on the winning side of the ledger as the second half of the season opened with Commack HS visiting the Bohemia campus. The team has been plagued with injuries and covid concerns and coach was hoping that January 4th would give the t-birds the break they needed, but it was not to be.

Commack got off to a 19-9 first quarter lead, and took the win by a final score of 73-58. This night it would be coach Black who was ‘under the weather’! Mike Catalano and Tyler Moore led the T-birds with 18 points apiece, but Commack’s Mike Gitz led all scorers with 30 points. The T-birds did score on six3 point goals with Catalano hitting four and Moore

The annual Dimes for Dezy campaign held at Cherokee Street Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District raised $1,215 to assist those struggling with cancer. For two weeks, students emptied their change into a large water jug in memory of the late Connetquot resident Matt

DiStefano (Dezy) and the Dezy Strong Foundation. With assistance from teacher Cindy Campenella, Matt DiStefano’s children, third grader Giuliana DiStefano and first grader Gio DiStefano, emptied the donation jug each day and sorted the money collected. Each Thursday, students wore their Dezy Strong

Dimes For Dezy To Assist Those With Cancer shirts, Mr. DiStefano’s former cancer treatment day, and decorated the lobby wall with ribbon pledges to demonstrate their own strength and their support of the annual fundraiser. “We are proud to continue the legacy and be a part of something to help our community,” Ms. Campenella said. WAVES OF LEARNING - As an extension of their classroom lessons, the fifth and sixth grade students in Gabrielle Donovan’s class visited the Long Island Aquarium. During the visit, the students enjoyed interactive learning with environmental educator John Shiels of Western Suffolk BOCES.
