Buses replace trains between Hicksville and Ronkonkoma January 20–21, 27–28 The construction of a second track related to the Long Island Rail Road’s Double Track Project will shut down LIRR train service between Hicksville and Ronkonkoma all day on the weekends of January 13–14, January 20–21 and January 27–28. Rise Above We all have our obstacles, the daily struggles we try to overcome in an effort to be our best selves, to live our best lives, to reach whatever pinnacle of fulfillment possible. They say you should never compare your journey with anyone else’s, or look to compete in such a category. To each, his or her own; live and let live, and every other cliché in the book. There are times when this is more difficult than others, of course. Moments when the inclination is to reach out, to try to repair, to take on responsibility for things which we bare none. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to chart a course, to find the way that leads to that which they are seeking. In that, no one else can intercede. This topic comes to me in looking back over the last year and noting that the greatest
realization was in accepting that certain people will never change, will never become what you wish them to be, will never react in the way you have determined to be most appropriate; these expectations are simply unrealistic, and an almost guaranteed recipe for disappointment. Along the same vein, the topic of my favorite weekly podcast happened to coincide in discussing the process of being able to manage anticipation in such a way as to not have your psyche completely crushed if they don’t happen to be met. It focused on envisioning your ideal situation, enjoying it in the context of something hopeful on the horizon - and then letting it go and accepting the current context for what it is, being in the moment and choosing a constructive way to deal with it.

Easier said than done, to be sure. But such is the essence of life. If there were no obstacles, where would the satisfaction be in overcoming them? How would we even know if we were moving forward, or simply existing in complacency, never striving for something better? I know, most readers would probably prefer that level of contentment; but reality is seldom this simple. And so, we press on - minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year… until someday, at some point in time, we look back to realize that we have, in fact, accomplished quite a bit by simply being able to rise above and persevere. As different as the individual journeys may be, I think it’s safe to say this is a common goal. Here’s to smoother paths ahead.

Helpful How-To Sachem High School North 10th-grade world language students in the Sachem Central School District put their skills to the test as they presented how-to speeches to their classmates demonstrating assorted activities. Students in Christy Zummo’s Spanish class incorporated the commands learned in
class into their how-to demonstrations. Each speech included an introduction, a list of supplies needed, the steps necessary to complete the project or task and a conclusion. The studentpresenters also included a vocabulary list with English translations to help classmates follow along. Speeches ranged
from how to play a sport to the construction of a craft to how to follow a specific cooking recipe. Along with working on their Spanish commands, the speeches provided students with an opportunity to advance their presentation and public-speaking skills.
FunDrive Presentation On Wednesday, January 3rd, Exalted Ruler Karen Costello and FunDrive Chairperson, Maria Capone visited AMVETS Post 111, in Patchogue and presented a check to Commander John Piorkowski in the amount of $450. The check represents proceeds from a FunDrive chaired by Maria and her
husband, Jim Capone. Beginning in September and ending in November Maria and Jim collected donations from Elk members which included clothing and household items. They received 1,984 pounds of donated items. Savers Thrift Store sponsored the Elks for this event and paid for the
donated items. The American Veterans will use the funds to help Veterans in need. Thank you again to all the Elks who donated clothing bags and to Maria and Jim for organizing this drive and showing the community that Elks are dedicated to our Veterans.

As a team, students crouched low, cautiously peered around corners, and maintained constant communication with each other as they moved through the room. One acted as the point officer and the other as the cover officer (the point officer takes the lead and conducts the search while the cover officer guards his back). Students Add to Bounty
In partnership with the Teacher’s Federal Credit Union bank, students in all grade levels from Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School recently teamed up to collect $685 in pennies to benefit the efforts of the
Sayville Food Pantry. The initiative, which ran through December 20th, garnered tremendous support from the students, as they donated 92 jars full of pennies. At the end of the collection period, representatives from TFCU rewarded Joanna Zalewski’s
fifth-grade class with a complimentary pizza party for donating the most money. Additionally, TFCU matched up to $500 of the school’s collected funds, bringing the grand total to $1,185.

The Law Enforcement students at the Harry B. Ward Technical Center have recently learned to safely conduct room searches. After learning the proper methods, students repeatedly practice within a simulated environment. The Harry B. Ward Technical Center is part of the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology, the career and technical education program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES. The Connetquot Central School District recently hosted their annual English as a New Language Family Night at Ronkonkoma Middle School, inviting ENL students and families throughout the district for a night full of fun, dancing, delicious food and cultural appreciation. Members of the Connetquot High School Civic Club volunteered throughout the course of the night, as they hosted an arts and crafts session with the younger students in attendance and assisted with the setup of the evening’s activities. Christina Ladick of the
Connetquot Public Library was also in attendance to share information about all of the services that the library has to offer, and led a workshop for parents titled “Online Access to the Connetquot Public Library.” Mrs. Ladick also provided attendees with a meaningful tutorial on library website resources for parents and their children. There were also handouts available that described the ENL program and services that Connetquot Public Library offers. The attendees were also able to enjoy delicious foods, consisting of
elements of different cultures, such as fried rice, empanadas and pizza. “In an increasingly global world, it is important for teachers, administrators, community members, and students to come together to experience each other and learn about various cultures,” said Denise Hannaoui, Connetquot Central School District Director of ENL/World Languages. “This event is just one of many that has successfully brought us together and I thank all of our ENL teachers who collaborated to bring this wonderful night to fruition.”
Raising Funds Connetquot High School senior Marina Duszak continues to assist the Connetquot community with her altruistic efforts. This year, Marina took it upon herself to spearhead a fundraiser with the help of the high school students and staff, and on December 22nd, she presented a check in the amount of $1,986 to Alexis Alpert, community relations coordinator for the MakeA-Wish foundation. Marina has a passion for giving to others and this December she coordinated a well-received fundraiser
to benefit Make-A-Wish, a national organization with a vision of granting the wish of children diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition. Through a “wish” ornament drive, Marina inspired her peers and high school staff to purchase paper ornaments for their homes, trees, offices and classrooms. The ornaments were sold for a $1 each. Additionally, Marina collected more than 2,000 letters to Santa through Make-A-Wish and delivered them to the local Macy’s department store.
A Connetquot High School senior, Marina is a member of the crosscountry team, is the Student Government president, ranks in the top 10 percent of her class, and has survived cancer. Diagnosed with leukemia in her freshman year, Marina endured almost three years of chemotherapy. In her junior year, the side effects of the medication became less debilitating, allowing her to rejoin the cross-country team, and spend time paying forward good deeds toward her community.

For consistently demonstrating exemplary character, nineteen High School students were recognized by Sayville teachers and staff at the Fall 2017 Breakfast of Champions. The morning ceremony, to which the students’ family members were also invited, recognized students for their innate set of values evident by how they conduct themselves throughout the school day. Breakfast of Champions, held once each semester, has been a beloved tradition, one that keeps on giving to all who attend. As she has done every year, Assistant Principal Jillian Makris was eloquent in introducing the purpose of the character recognition program and what general qualities of character have set these selected students apart. “These are the students who help make up the moral fabric of our school… and every day they strive to be the best they can… not just for a grade on their report card but in life as human

On December 1st, 2017, attorney Irving Like was the guest speaker at the Long Island Metro Business Action (LIMBA) meeting, which was held at the Courtyard Marriott in Ronkonkoma, where he emphasized the need to designate the Fire Island National Seashore (FINS) as a World Heritage Site. He was joined by Dr. John Tanacredi, Director, Center for Environmental Research and Coastal Oceans Monitoring (CERCOM), Molloy College, who is seeking to designate the horseshoe crab as a World Threatened Species, and Molloy College students who also attended the meeting. Mr. Like told those in attendance that the FINS needs to be protected because of the existential threat of climate change and rising sea levels, which, in turn, would have a ruinous effect not just on the environment, but on the economy and pose a threat to our national security. He fought Robert Moses’ plans to build a road on Fire Island from Field 5 at Robert Moses Park to the Shirley bridge - which would have destroyed the

villages in its path - along with a group of concerned Long Islanders such as Paul Townsend, Founder, LIMBA and Murray Barbash, a conservationist builder. The group successfully lobbied Congress to create FINS. Molloy College is collaborating with Mr. Like on this campaign. He said he is fortunate to work with a prominent Catholic college and pointed out that the designations they seek comply with Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical Laudato Si, which calls for action to address the existential threats of climate change and rising sea levels. He also said he will seek outreach from the Vatican for viral support. Among Mr. Like’s arguments for the designation for FINS included the seashore’s proximity to New York City - a world-class city and the seat of the United Nations - and one of the city’s National Heritage Sites (Statue of Liberty) and a National Historical Site (Ellis Island) and its ability to meet the World Heritage Site criteria as established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific
and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). According to UNESCO, to be selected as a World Heritage Site, the nominated site must already be classified as a landmark and unique in some respect as a geographically and historically identifiable place with special cultural or physical significance. Dr. Tanacredi also reminded those in attendance that the horseshoe crab, which has been on this planet for 450 million years, is on the verge of extinction. He pointed out that, in parts of Asia, horseshoe crab is considered a delicacy at many of its restaurants; in the U.S., it is used as bait, and pharmaceutical companies bleed them out and use their blood to develop life-saving medications. According to Dr. Tanacredi, the horseshoe crab population is declining each year at an 8% clip and, if this goes unchecked, the crab will be extinct within 10 years. Branches to Collect Coats Teachers Federal Credit Union, one of the country’s largest credit unions, has partnered with Connoisseur Media and EAC Network to support the Coats for Kids drive. LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!
“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless.

After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help. Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www.LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me
that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. Sensible Discoveries Taking learning beyond the classroom, students enrolled in Elizabeth Jonas’ and Linda Pennington’s kindergarten classes at Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School were recently able to explore the world around them using their five senses. With assistance from Donna Waldenburg, a representative of Long Island Center for the Arts
and Sciences, the students engaged in activities which would further enhance their senses and deepen their understanding of how the body works. Ms. Waldenburg walked around the room with small containers consisting of prominent, flavorful scents, explaining that the nose is the body’s primary organ for picking up smells. Additionally, the kindergartners utilized
their senses of sight and hearing as they played Simon Says in American Sign Language, and learned how to say “I Love You” in Braille using their sense of touch. To learn more about their sense of taste, the students participated in an activity which discussed the important sense via discussions and informational slides.

Math Creations Samoset Middle School math students in the Sachem Central School District explored the unique capabilities of graphing straight lines as they participated in a holiday-themed activity introducing students to quadratics. Eighth-grade honors students in Alicia Kroczynski’s math class learned how plotting
straight lines can lead to creating curves. Utilizing K h a n A c a d e m y. o r g , students observed how quadratics were applied in the environmental modeling of grass in the Disney Pixar film “Brave.” After watching videos on how the graphic designers incorporated straight lines to create realistic curves, students began to work on their own creations.
Using straight lines to connect a combination of dots, students created various holiday objects, such as a Christmas tree star, a snowman and a poinsettia. During the activity, students also familiarized themselves with popular quadratics vocabulary terms, such as axis, rays, angles and parabolic arches.

Students at Connetquot Central School District’s John Pearl Elementary School were recently visited by Mad Science of Long Island representative “Ant the Alchemist” for a highly engaging science presentation titled “Up, Up and Away.” Utilizing his energetic personality to get the students excited about the wonder of science, Ant the Alchemist invited student
volunteers to take part in hands-on activities. Along the way, students learned that water pressure increases the further you dive into the ocean, and that air pressure decreases as airplanes rise higher into the air. Additionally, they engaged in activities showcasing that plastic bags begin to rise when heat is applied to its physical structure, car engines run due to reactions in the
combustion chamber, and that structures can actually float if high amounts of air pressure are applied from underneath its base. The criteria for eligible projects include that the project must be a capital improvement project, funding request must be at least $10,000, the organization must partner with a municipality and be located on municipallyowned property in or adjacent to a downtown and the project life-span must be at least 15 years. In 2017, Suffolk County received 16 applications for the Round 15 grants and 12 projects were funded. A pool of $600,000 was made available to partially fund qualified capital projects. Since 1997, Suffolk County has awarded over $11.5 million in funds for Downtown Revitalization initiatives. The Downtown Revitalization Citizens Advisory Panel utilizes a point system to evaluate each application to ensure projects that receive funding will make the greatest contribution to the long-term improvement of local downtowns and have a positive economic impact on Suffolk County as a whole.
