It’s Time to Turn Our Backs on False Idols “You shall have no other Gods before me” - Exodus 20:2-3 Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, Kevin Spacey, Les Moonves... R. Kelly. Yes, I said it. We’re in quite a pickle, aren’t we? As a culture we have allowed mass media to convince us that those who become public figures in entertainment are idols to be worshipped. I know, I know... not you. You’re above it all, but let’s say for the sake of argument that most people aren’t. Fair? Following your favorite celebrities on social media, buying magazines when they grace the cover, tuning in to watch awards shows, hanging up posters on your bedroom wall as a teenager. Shall I go on? The past year or so has left society reeling with the realization that many famous people are deeply flawed and sometimes do some very bad things. But why the shock and awe, and devastation? They’re only human, many of them with severe problems. As a culture, we have a bigger problem. We’ve
allowed ourselves to worship false idols. Going back to the days of the O.J. Simpson trial that transfixed our nation, we couldn’t believe that this handsome, charismatic football superstar could actually be just a person who most likely committed a heinous crime. Did you know the construct of “celebrity” is really only about 100 years old? That’s a drop in the bucket. Prior to 1920, there were no radios in people’s homes. The first “talkie” film was around 1927, and televisions weren’t in homes until 1949. Up until the 20th century you could go to theatre, or read a book, magazine or newspaper. The media was a fraction of the size it is now, and people were community oriented. The typical family was focused on their home, their community, their church or synagogue and their neighbors. With the relatively recent constructs of record companies, movie studios, television studios and social media, executives needed to mythologize their stars in order to commoditize them. They needed to strategize ways

Yes, we’re mixing cereal with chicken again, because it tastes great, and as Ella Micalizzi says, “Any kid will eat it!” Ella Micalizzi of East Islip, New York swears by this concoction, dubbed Gurr Dorito Chicken. “A few years back my dad went to visit friends in Florida. His friends whipped up some Gurr Dorito Chicken.” Ella and her dad have been hooked ever since! “This has become one of our favorite, quick meals, and we usually have it with brown rice and veggies.”
What You Will Need:
Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts Jar of Mayonnaise (or Veganese) Any Flavor of Doritos Butter or Non-Dairy Butter Substitute

Students from Samoset Middle School gained valuable insight into the unique characteristics of different countries, cities and cultures from around the world during a recent assembly program led by photographer and world traveler Michael Harrold. As part of the captivating presentation, Harrold explained several weapons,
tools and toys that he acquired from trips to more than 75 countries. He wowed the auditorium of sixth-grade students with photos from his travels to places including Burma, Dubai, Egypt, Greece, India and Thailand. Students learned about ceremonial clothing, different religions, animals and native foods in addition to
how each culture utilizes the natural resources available to them. Harrold concluded his presentation with a motivational message to students. “Don’t stop learning when you leave the classroom,” he said. “Become citizens that continue to learn throughout your life. Become lifelong learners.”

Connetquot Career Fair
Connetquot High School recently hosted their first career fair within the high school cafeteria, inviting a number of local business and organizations to speak the students in an effort to spark new interests for their futures. During the course of the evening, Connetquot High School students of all grade levels spoke to representatives of the attending companies/ organizations and engaged them in conversation
about possible career opportunities. Additionally, a number of students dressed in business casual attire and were afforded the opportunity to practice building a professional network. to make you love entertainers so you would purchase albums and movie tickets, and tune into television programs. It generates advertising and sales revenue. Don’t get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with enjoying entertainment. In fact, I believe that the arts are nourishing to the spirit and play an important role in our existence. But idol worship has led us down a murky path. In my journalistic work interviewing entertainers, I have tried to use that platform to peel away the celebrity veneer and show the person’s humanity to readers. Maybe I have succeeded at this or maybe I have failed. That is up to you to decide. You’re entitled to your opinion either way. With my son, I try to impart to him that although he can enjoy great music, theatre, film and television, the people he should be looking to as his role models are the people who touch his life on a daily basis; the people who care for him and his well being. The only being that we pray to and worship in our home is G-d. For that is as it should be.

Student Gets Wish Fulfilled The Connetquot High School community recently gathered in the school’s large group instruction room to show their full support for 11th-grade student Diana SantillanGress, who had her wish fulfilled by the Make-AWish Foundation during a recent “Sendoff Party.” Prior to the big reveal that Diana’s wish had been granted, student-members of Connetquot High School’s Concert Choir were on hand to display their dazzling musical talents and show Diana that she always has a friend in music. Thanks to the overwhelming support of the high school community’s fundraising efforts, a check valued at more than $6,000 was presented to Make-A-Wish Community Relations Coordinator Alexis Alpert. Connetquot High School graduate Marina Duszak, along with her mother Patty Duszak, brother Joe Duszak and the school’s Interact Club, were instrumental in raising funds for MakeA-Wish as they’ve held an ornament drive for the past few years in celebration of the holiday season. Diana was joined by her family members, student-members of the Connetquot High School Interact Club, the Duszak Family, and fellow Connetquot High School students when she learned Make-A-Wish granted her wish and would meet WWE Superstar Charlotte Flair at the WWE Live Holiday Tour at Nassau Coliseum on Dec. 27, 2018. All in attendance were thrilled to see Diana’s wish fulfilled, and rounds of applause thundered throughout the room in support of her. Positive Behavior Support Community Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, which was established in 2011 to help people with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities and other special needs. Their mission is to empower people with disabilities to make their own life choices and to succeed in the communities where they work, live and play. This organization helps these individuals access the support and services they need to become active and productive members of the community. They also encourage long-term planning to aspire towards meaningful life goals and they support efforts to establish social connections and friendships in the community. Independence Without Isolation is what they aim for as a foundation. A lovely young woman, Erin, with a developmental disability has had great success with this foundation. Erin, from Commack has the ability to make decisions and choose her own path through Self Direction. After graduating from High School in 2010, Erin went on to graduate from Eastern Suffolk Boces in 2013. Once she aged out at 21 years old, she and her family chose to Self-Direct her adult services. By doing so she has been successful in accomplishing many of her personal goals! Erin has been employed by her local Stop & Shop for over seven years and has even been honored as Employee of the Month! Additionally, she has built a strong network of social connections. Erin was one of the original members of Big Time Glee, a grassroots singing group that was started by the PBS Community Foundation with just a few young adults meeting weekly at the Leader’s home and singing regularly at community
Senior Centers. She now participates in Big Time Glee (which has grown to 25+ attendees), the Crafting Connection and the PBS Campus Experience at Stony Brook University. Erin says she looks forward to participating in the PBS Community Foundation initiatives because she enjoys singing and performing in the community and she looks forward to being able to “hang out with her friends”. These activities have led to meaningful relationships, connections and other social and recreational opportunities in her community! Lastly, Erin volunteers her time to the Guide Dog Foundation and participates weekly in a cooking class, which helps her gain independent living skills. This supports her ultimate goal of living on her own one day. Erin shows us that her disability doesn’t stand in the way of her abilities. She is a hard-working, social, determined young lady and an inspiration to her family and friends! As a means of getting a jump-start on their financial literacy education, students enrolled in Teresa Hewitt’s kindergarten class at Helen B. Duffield Elementary School recently distinguished their “wants” versus “needs” during a fun and educational classroom project. After spending the month of December discussing what classifies a
human want versus need in the classroom, the students engaged in a hands-on activity which asked them to apply their knowledge to an art project. Split into two separate columns, the students chose from a pile of clipped-out items and pasted the items in either the “wants” or “needs” column, depending on which was appropriate. Examples of items the students found to be

Wants Versus Needs “needs” were clothing, shelter, food and water, whereas the “wants” consisted of toys, video games and clothing accessories. At the conclusion of the activity, a handful of students presented their findings to their classmates, and asked if they placed their items into the proper category.

HOLIDAY TUNES - This past December, the Ronkonkoma Middle School Soul Singers performed holiday tunes at MacArthur Airport for all of the travelers going to visit their loved ones during the holidays. Under the direction of Nicole White, the vocal performers were joined by the RMS Select Band members, conducted by Stacy Stollberger and Elizabeth Piekut, as they filled the air will holiday favorites, such as “Frosty the Snowman” and “Let it Snow,” for the sixth year in a row. After making their selection, students gathered books for their research, allowing them to practice notetaking and to gather facts to include in a computer presentation. Students selected notable figures such as Neil Armstrong, Simone Biles, Albert Einstein, LeBron James, Hellen Keller and
Lionel Messi. Using the coding software Scratch, students will animate images of their prominent figures to move in ways that may correlate with their specific profession. At the conclusion of the coding process students will present their completed presentations to their class.

Prior to the big celebration, the young students gathered in their classrooms for a reading of the classic holiday book.
Connetquot Marine Visit
The story is about a young boy who takes a magical adventure to the North Pole, and comes to believe in the possibilities and wonders, of the holiday season. Additionally, the last part of the morning presentation included a visit from very special friend, Santa Claus, who came prepared with books and treats for the children.
Private First-Class U.S. Marine and Connetquot High School alumna Lauren Sherer recently returned to the OakdaleBohemia Middle School to visit with a few of her former teachers and surprise her sister in class this past December. Lauren’s sister, Brooke, who was completely unaware of the visit, was overwhelmed with joy when her older sister stepped foot into her social studies class taught
by Jonathan Agatstein. Mr. Agatstein displayed a video about the history and traditions of the U.S. Marine Corps during Lauren’s visit, and she then answered students’ questions which ranged from the types of training she underwent, to makeup and hair styles that are regulated while she is in uniform. PFC Sherer graduated from Connetquot High School in June 2018, and three days later she was
headed for Parris Island Recruit Depot in South Carolina. The 12-week training program turns recruits into a fighting force and earns each of them the title of U.S. Marine when they receive their Eagle, Globe and Anchor. It was a wonderful visit home for Lauren, and even more enjoyable for Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School Principal Susanne

Additionally, while Lauren was on holiday leave at home, she had the chance to visit Connetquot High School as a recruiter, answering questions from graduating seniors who had an interest in knowing more about the military
branch. Lauren will be headed to Mississippi for additional training in the area of Aviation Supply, and is hoping to be assigned to a base on the California coast after her training is complete.
