The YMCA of Long Island is a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors,

of Dance program. During the program, students learned essential dance skills, such as balance, coordination and flexibility, while memorizing each of their individualized dance routines.
Working together through eight practice sessions, students also learned the importance of teamwork and collaboration while working to perfect their routines.

She was challenged to rewrite the last scene of the story, showing what the characters realized and what actions they took instead. “We loved your thoughtful revision of the scene regarding the changes the Boyds made if they had learned their lesson,” said Lauren
Tarshis, editor-in-chief, in a letter to Brooke. “You included stage directions, appropriate emotion and realistic dialogue. We especially enjoyed your strong closing and positive message.” As a winner, Brooke received a copy of “Where the Mountain Meets the Moon” by Grace Lin.

The Sayville Village Improvement Society, SVIS, is proud to announce a Call for Entries for the First Annual Sayville Art in the Park Outdoor Sculpture Competion. The competition seeks twelve outdoor sculptures made from metal wheelbarrows, which SVIS will provide. They will be exhibited in the public parks throughout the town for a five month period, after which they
will be auctioned off at the Sayville Summerfest on August 9, 2020. SVIS will provide alike wheelbarrows to all selected artists. This competition is open to artists/teams 18 years of age and older. The deadline to apply is February 24, 2020, with finalists notified by March 10, 2020. All of the relevant information concerning this competition , including the application

Metlife Stadium Tour Sachem High School East students from the Sports and Entertainment Management classes recently attended a field trip to MetLife Stadium to gain expert insight from business executives and learn the history of the sports venue. As part of the immersive experience, students learned many real-life elements of marketing and management, beginning with MetLife’s sponsorship deals with Pepsi and Ver-
izon. They then learned how the franchises did their advertising and publicity from the 1920s and how it has evolved for today’s market. Students also learned how the stadium was designed and constructed, including how they convert the stadium from the Giants to Jets between games. Additionally, tour guides shared in-depth information on professional sports, college-level sports, hosting special events such as the

Super Bowl, and revenue MetLife generates from hosting lavish weddings, bar mitzvahs, sweet 16s and other private events. As the tour progressed, students visited key areas of the stadium, including different types of clubs and suites available to ticket holders, the planning room for Super Bowl XLVIII, the outside of the New York Giant’s locker room and the sidelines of the field.

The board of education meeting on Dec. 10 was full of Connetquot spirit as two teams were recognized for impressive accomplishments in their respective areas. The Connetquot High School girls volleyball team won their third New York State Championship title in five years and the varsity cheerleading team was named the UCA Regional Champions. Girls volleyball coach Justin Hertz and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lynda G.
Adams started off the evening by presenting certificates of recognition to each of the players. Multiple elected officials were also in attendance to present the team with proclamations recognizing their commitment and performance, including New York State senators Phil Boyle and Monica R. Martinez and Suffolk County legislators Tom Cilmi and William Lindsay. In addition, Julia Patsos, a senior co-captain on the team, was acknowledged as a News 12 Scholar Athlete
and received a $1,000 scholarship in recognition of her impressive performance on and off the court. Varsity cheerleading coach Kelly Unterweiser rounded out the evening when she proudly presented her team with certificates of recognition for being named the UCA Regional Champions. The cheerleading team is now eligible to compete in the UCA Nationals in February 2020.
New Executive Director For Special Education The Sachem Central School District is proud to announce the appointment of Michael Saidens as the new executive director for special education. Mr. Saidens accepts the position after most recently serving as the principal of Tamarac Elementary School for 10 years. The vacancy left by Mr. Saidens will be filled by an interim principal, Arlene Wild, who joins Sachem from the Smithtown Central School District where she served as a principal for 15 years.
In addition to Mr. Saidens’ time as the principal of Tamarac Elementary School, he previously held the position of principal at the Early Childhood Center and Pre-School in East Islip for five years, was the assistant principal of Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District for two years and was a teacher at Mills Pond Elementary School and Accompsett Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District for six years.
Mr. Saidens, a Smithtown resident, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in management from Clemson University, a master’s degree in special education from Dowling College and a professional diploma in school district administration from Stony Brook University. Adding to his expansive résumé in education, Mr. Saidens has New York State certification in school district administration, elementary education and special education.

Academy Students Practice Pediatric Care The Medical Assisting students in Betty Martin’s class at the Academy at Milliken Tech recently gained some first-hand experience in working with three and four-year olds. The class was visited by the preschoolers in the Early Childhood Education Program, also at the school, so they could take their height, weight, and have them read an eye chart. (FYI, the eye chart featured symbols, such as hearts and stars, as opposed to letters.) This
helped them learn how to get small children to cooperate, not intimidate them while providing medical care, and to keep the environment cheerful. According to Martin, many students often think that it will be fun to work with young children but have no idea how different it is compared to adolescents and adults. “At first they all want to go into pediatrics because little children are so cute,” Martin said. Providing her students with the
opportunity to interact with youngsters in a professional setting allows them to experience how reserved and scared some preschoolers can be of adults. Martin shared some of her expertise with her students, which included advice such as bending down to their level, speaking in a friendly voice, and keeping stethoscopes in lab coat pockets and not around the neck. “It can be intimidating,” she said.

Over 35 college lacrosse players traded their sticks for Santa hats to give children with intellectual and other developmental disabilities a Christmas to remember. Amidst studying for finals and training in the off- season, the Farmingdale State College lacrosse team shopped for over 100 gifts, purchased them and wrapped them to put smiles on the faces of students at AHRC Suffolk’s Seiff Educare Center. “I’ve been doing it for a few years now and a lot of team members who graduate come back to do it” senior and team captain John McMahon said.
