he Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, Inc. held the first annual “Midnight On Main Street” on Wednesday, December 31st, from 8 to 9 p.m. at Capital One Bank Plaza in Patchogue for more than 2,200 attendees. The first of its kind on Long Island, Midnight On Main Street celebrated New Year’s Eve 2015. Thousands were in attendance, and a great time was had by all. Program Administrator Elizabeth Melichar said, “It’s never too early for parents and schools to think about transitioning their child/student. In essence, the social workers make the connections. They are the conduit to give parents names and information about services and programs. As part of the New York State Education Department regulations, we need to provide parent training and education on a regular basis. This fair is a perfect forum.” More than fifty representatives from day habilitation programs, group homes, respite programs, service coordination, and financial planning services were on hand to provide important information to attendees.

Something that many people argue and converse over has become a major issue in the United States: obesity. What is happening? What is causing this epidemic? Whose fault is it? Better yet, whose responsibility is it to fix it? Imagine waking up one morning and realizing all of the food in your house was missing? Even further, imagine waking up one morning with food in your cabinets that the government put there for you? Obesity is a growing burden on the United States, but why are we targeting and punishing the symptom instead of the problem? Is obesity really about the food? Or is it about the people? The problem is not the

food; it is about how we feel about ourselves. Why are we putting the blame on fast food companies instead of taking responsibility for a problem we caused for ourselves that we are too lazy to fix? It is time for us to start asking questions. It is time for us to start taking charge of our own lives instead of expecting others to come in and save us. We are a part of a life in which it is rare that we take responsibility for our own actions and the repercussions that may follow. This life is ours, and we must have knowledge in order to have liberty. We must take action, not by telling people what to eat and what not to eat, but instead by learning
about ourselves and our bodies and what makes them work. With that knowledge, the self-respect will hopefully follow and the chance for a change will shine through. We must stop treating the symptoms of our problems... instead we must treat the problems themselves if we want to see results. Instead of blindly following the rules that take away our personal rights and decisions, we must take hold of the opportunity we now have that gives us the chance to reinvent ourselves for the better. We must take hold of the opportunity we now have that gives us the chance to recreate the lives that we have and the futures that we want.

(Un)Deck The Halls By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Is it just me, or is the process of “un-decking” the halls one of the least wonderful times of the year? After what seems like months of preparation and primping, stringing lights and garland, strategically hanging ornaments and placing knick-knacks, it’s over. Just like that. As of New Year’s Day, it seems just about everyone is all but done with the Christmas spirit as soon as the ball drops in Times Square. Out goes the tree
to the curb, down comes the décor and back go the unacceptable gifts to the store. ‘Tis the season, indeed. I suppose it wouldn’t be so bad if there was another festive occasion to look forward to, but everything just seems so bare once the holidays have passed. Not to mention the cold, stark winter weather lurking just outside the window… the coziness factor is definitely lacking. And why is it, every year without fail, that nothing ever seems to fit in precisely the way it did
when you unpacked it to begin with? I mean, sure, you may accumulate a new ornament or two here and there, but not to the point of seriously contemplating the option of subletting your kitchen cabinets as additional storage space. Ah, but at least there’s not much else going on this time of year. If there is a time for hibernating and reorganizing, it is surely now. Perhaps a few Christmas tunes and twinkling lights would make this mundane process more festive.

Holiday Cheer In 1998 Paul Olenick said he saw an ad in a local paper asking for holiday donations for the children of migrant workers. He said, “I thought maybe the older children might like a new bike. So, every year since then I look for bicycles on sale and I buy two so I can donate one to a boy and one to a girl when Julia Schnurman has the holiday party for the migrant families.”

Party. Julia Schnurman is administrative coordinator for FEOP at ESBOCES. Every year a holiday party and informational meeting is held for the migrant families. FEOP programs are a cluster of speciallyfunded Title I programs that serve at-risk children from ages 2 to 22, who are the children of migratory agricultural workers, who live below the poverty line. Educational and advocacy services in early childhood education, as well as academic support for school-aged students, is available at no cost to districts to help these students have an equal opportunity and be successful in school. Families gathered in the multi-purpose room at ESBOCES Ward Tech campus in Riverhead, enjoyed pizza and snacks, while listening to Francisco Prieto, representative from the United States Department of Identification and Recruitment and migrant education programs, about updated information and services. Student Joselyn Valentin was recognized by Julia Schnurman for achieving Honor Roll status at Riverhead Middle School. Joselyn’s mother thanked the FEOP staff for all their hard work, “because of you and all your support, my daughter made the Honor Roll,” she said. After the meeting, Santa arrived to present the bicycles and presents donated by community members Muriel Froehlich and Paul Olenick.
Meet The Leaders Connetquot Central School District Connetquot High School recently celebrated Veterans Day as part of a special Meet The Leaders panel of United States military veterans hosted by Optimum/
Cablevision. Islip Town Supervisor and Connetquot High School alumnus, Tom Croci delivered the keynote speech. The hourlong program included questions from the
students for the panel of four former military members. The veterans discussed the importance of Veterans Day, public service and leadership.

Holy Angels Regional School participated in the 2014 Patchogue holiday events with a float in the Village’s 52nd Christmas Parade and the 2014 Holiday Boat Parade. For the Christmas Parade, the school
presented a scene from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, decorated by the volunteer parade committee made up of children and parents of the school. For the 2014 Patchogue Holiday Boat Parade,
the school decorated the ferry Nicolet which was generously donated for their use. The group chose the theme of a Holiday Tropical Paradise for their boat parade entry.

WASH KITS - Connetquot Central School District Edward J. Bosti Elementary School students recently prepared wash kits for residents of local women’s, and homeless shelters. The wash kits included toiletry items such as soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpastes, lotions and washcloths. Donations from local businesses, members of the community and a financial grant from the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children provided the items for students to package and deliver. Students also wrote letters to be included with each wash kit.

Assessment With Integrity Eastern Suffolk BOCES Education and Information Support Services (EISS) in collaboration with Learner-Centered Initiatives (LCI) held an Assessment Conference at Dowling College that focused on assessing with integrity to support the design, implementation, validation, and refinement of performance assessments. International presenter Giselle Martin-Kniep, Ph.D. from LCI provided the keynote address on Assessing What We Value Most: A Moral Imperative. She stated, “This is an interesting time and a paradoxical time. What do we want students to know, be able to do, and value? We need an assessment system that is congruent and parsimonious. Parsimonious is one of my favorite words because it’s all about doing more with less.”
The conference was held as part of the Teaching is the Core Grant and was extended to district personnel as professional development as they seek to assess and provide students with 21st century skills, problem solving skills, and soft skills that are not easily assessed. EISS is the recipient of the New York State Education Department Teaching is the Core Grant. The proposed plan for the use of the funds is to work with the participating school districts to improve the quality of local assessments that are currently in use, while simultaneously reducing the number of local assessments that are perceived not to inform instruction. EISS Administrative Coordinator Ellen Moore said, “The purpose of the conference is for us to roll up our sleeves and
answer questions such as: do the assessments we are using measure students learning accurately; do the assessments provide the expected outcomes; are the assessments valid and reliable; are we implementing a valid and reliable assessment system that reduces the amount of pre-imposed testing of our students?” Mattituck-Cutchogue UFSD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Anne H. Smith attended the conference with several staff members. She said, “Our district is working on curriculum mapping which is an initiative focused on how we can use formative assessment to give students more quality and frequent feedback. The information that Giselle provides fits into our goals and we will bring these resources back into the district and use them.”

The Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, Inc. held the first annual “Midnight On Main St.” on Wednesday, December 31st from 8 to 9 p.m. at Capital One Bank Plaza in Patchogue for more than 2,200 attendees. The first of its kind on Long Island, Midnight on Main Street celebrated New Year’s Eve 2015. Thousands were in attendance for Midnight on Main St. as the illuminated ball, designed and created by Signarama and NorthStar Sign and Neon, rose from Capital One Bank Plaza at 116 East Main Street at the stroke of 9 p.m. At that time, a display
of grand illuminations were set off from the roof of Capital One Bank by Grucci Fireworks, thanks to a generous donation by the Christmas N’ Patchogue Committee. DJ Jay Letterman entertained the crowd of thousands from 8 p.m. A video of Midnight on Main St. can be viewed here. “Midnight On Main St. was a huge success and went beyond our expectations, considering the event was the first time anything like it took place on Long Island,” said David Kennedy, executive director of the Patchogue Chamber. “We are grateful for all of the positive
