CELEBRATING CENTENARIAN PLUS ONE- Rose Santoro was joined by Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter at a celebration marking her 101st birthday. The birthday party took place at The Bristol in Sayville, where 81 kids from the Sycamore Avenue Elementary School in Bohemia joined Supervisor Carpenter in singing Happy Birthday to Rose. The YMCA of Long Island is a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors,
Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened. When someone becomes a volunteer, they have the opportunity to share their blessings with those who need it most. You can take an active role in strengthening your community by volunteering at the Y! Volunteers can serve on their Board of Directors/ Board of Managers/ committees, raise funds to ensure their organization is accessible to all members of the community, motivate and support youth, extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live healthier, advocate for their efforts and participate in opportunities to give back and support neighbors. Connetquot High School National Business Honor Society members along with business teacher and work-based learning coordinator Andrea Pizzimenti recently visited the fifth grade students at the Helen B. Duffield Elementary School to share tips and information about personal financial literacy. Prior to the visit, the high school students participated in Junior
Achievements High School Heroes program, a servicelearning project sponsored by Junior Achievement USA that provides high school students with the opportunity to become role models for elementary students. These “heroes” then teach and empower elementary students by using interactive, handson, lessons centered around work readiness, financial literacy and entrepreneurship. The
“High School Heroes” plan to visit each of the elementary schools within the district during the school year.” Connetquot High School Heroes are selected based on their leadership and training through the National Business Honor Society. Mrs. Pizzimenti expressed her pride in the outstanding effort of the students who mentored the Duffield students.
Elementary Band Students Play For HS Football Game
On the coldest night in November, four Sayville Elementary School Band members braved the elements to achieve a hardwon dream. They played along with the High School Band on the Timothy J. Henck Memorial Turf Field for the first round of Sayville Varsity Football playoffs on November 8th. “This was the first time this has ever happened,” said their Band Teacher Diane Hoffman. “Usually, the football season is over when the kids are beginning to blossom on their new
endeavor of playing a musical instrument. These hard-working beginning musicians, coupled with the great talents of our undefeated football team making the playoffs, made this opportunity possible.” Mrs. Hoffman recalled, “that was the coldest night of the year with temperatures in the 20s and windy. They toughed out the cold like champs, jumped in and played without ANY rehearsals with the high school kids, and kept their cool, going with the flow! Words can’t
describe how incredibly proud I was of them and how great it was having them there.” The four Sunrise Drive students were Michael Babbino-Bassoon; Matthew DeGraff-Tenor Saxophone; Chace Kulla-Tenor Saxophone, and William Mitchell-Alto Saxophone “Mrs. VanBoxel, the High School band director,” added Mrs. Hoffman, “was very impressed with all of them, how they presented themselves, their effort and behavior.”

THOUSANDS OF TOYS DONATED - On December 13, Brookhaven residents opened their hearts in a big way by donating thousands of toys at the Town’s INTERFACE Toy Drive. The event, held in the lobby of Town Hall, was co-sponsored by the Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau and JVC Broadcasting with on-air personalities from the JVC radio stations broadcasting live throughout the day. Through raising donations, the Toy Drive will provide gifts for children in need, ranging in age from infant to 15 years of age.
