As we raise a toast to the New Year upon us, let me take a moment to personally thank all of you – the readers – for your continued support throughout the years. As I embark on year number 10 of my tenure here at South Bay’s Neighbor, I am fast approaching another mini-milestone of sorts with this very column. In ten weeks, I will pen (or type, as the case may be) In Step #500. So many topics have been

touched on throughout the years, some inspired by the very fan mail and feedback I have received from all of you. It is with that in mind that I invite you to submit your own suggestions for future columns, en route to the next milestone, whatever it may be. Every writer writes for him or herself; at least, they should. But, without readers, there is little self-satisfaction to be had. So your feedback is welcome. On Thursday, November 13th, Connetquot School District Foreign Language department announced the selection of 38 new members to the National Foreign Language Honor Society. Guest Speaker Selin Celikoyar congratulated the students, and spoke of the opportunities she has had as a result of her foreign language studies. Students were congratulated by Assistant Principal Mr. Mark Sidman, who spoke of the advantages of fluency in the workplace. The Honor Society Oaths were administered by students Paul Root (French), Steven Crescenti (Italian) and Jami Goldson (Spanish). Holy Angels Regional School participated in the 2014 Patchogue holiday events with a float in the Village’s 52nd Christmas Parade and the 2014 Holiday Boat Parade. For the Christmas Parade, the school presented a scene from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, decorated by the volunteer parade committee made up of children and parents of the school. For the 2014 Patchogue Holiday Boat Parade, the school decorated the ferry Nicolet which was generously donated for their use. The group chose the theme of a Holiday Tropical Paradise for their boat parade entry.

Student Spotlight GIVING BACK TO OTHERS Over the Christmas holiday, I had a wonderful opportunity to help sick children who were in need. My sisters and I made gift bags and homemade Christmas cards to send to children in Africa. We made two groups of bags, one set for girls, one set for boys. The girls’ bags contained nail polish, toiletry items, coloring books, crayons and stuffed animals. The boys’ bags contained hot wheel cars, toiletry items, coloring books and stuffed animals. The gifts that we made were sent out to Ghana, Africa a couple of weeks ago. The children in Africa got their gifts on Christmas Day. The organization that transported the gift bags and

cards to the children in Africa is called the Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine, known as (FOCOS). FOCOS helps children in Africa who are diagnosed with scoliosis, which is a severe curvature of the spine. I enjoyed this volunteer effort. Another volunteer effort I participated in during the week leading up to Christmas was putting together food baskets for people in need. I volunteer at the Zion Gospel Food Pantry on a monthly bases. Our pantry serves people in need 52 weeks a year. We double our donation efforts during Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Our food pantry is a designated pick-up

organization for Island Harvest and Long Island Cares. I go to pick up the food twice a week from these organizations. Once again this year, in addition to food, we also gave toys out to those families who are less fortunate. Our church is also a designated distribution organization for Toys-for-Tots. We utilize this resource every year at Christmas to bring joy to children in need throughout our community. Reaching out and giving back throughout the year is always important. However, the Christmas season should always be a time to be even more kind and giving to those less fortunate than us.

Mock Interviews

Especially when competition is so fierce, interviews are often the vital step toward acquiring a job or gaining acceptance to colleges. Learning interviewing techniques the sooner the better - will give students confidence to do their best. For many years, Sayville Middle School has been providing the right kind of practice as part of the Home and Careers curriculum, and again this semester, teachers Cheryl Scantlebury and Andrea Cacciatore organized Mock Interviews for the Eighth grade students. Putting theory into practice on Mock Interview Day, the Sayville students spent weeks preparing for positions at Sayville Books & Beyond as either a Sales Associate in the Book Department, Sales Associate in the Music Department, Sales Associate in the Coffee

Shop, or cashier. In the Career Investigation Unit in their Home and Careers classes, the students had learned they must meet and greet with firm hand shakes, eye contact, and clear voices of introduction. The candidates also learned they would be judged on whether they dressed suitably for the interview, how they conducted themselves before, during, and after the interview, and how well they answered questions regarding their job skills. Perhaps, the most important question would be in reverse: “Do you have any questions for me?” the interviewers might ask. The students learned that taking the initiative to ask questions about the actual job showed that as a job candidate they had done research about the company before the interview. Sayville Administrators, faculty, staff, and several

local merchants took the roles of Employers for this year’s fresh faces and rated the students’ interviews with a rubric that judged how the students answered the questions, from the best, i.e., “clearly” to “did not answer.” After considering the candidates’ handshakes, attire, eye contact, answers to questions, appearance of the applications, along with the questions the candidate asked, the “Employers” were also asked to rate if the candidates were strong (Definite Hire), acceptable (Possible Hire), or unacceptable (Would Not Hire). Thanks to everyone involved, Sayville Books and Beyond had many new hires this fall. Congratulations, New Hires! And a special thanks to the “employers” who volunteered their time.

NYS CHAMPIONS - On December 16th, Councilman Kevin LaValle and the Brookhaven Town Board honored the 2014 Sachem North Boys Volleyball Team. The team had an undefeated season (18-0) and was the first Long Island school to win a State Class A title. The team was the 2014 NYSPHSAA (New York State Public High School Athletic Association) Champions and are Section XI League Champions, Suffolk County Champions and Long Island Champions.

Touching Experience

Raising Land Hermit Crabs in their classrooms may have been busy work for Cherry Avenue Second-graders in Sayville School District, but they made room in their schedules for a very special visitor. Marine Educator Tracy Marcus of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County brought The Sea Explorers Marine Camp a live-species crustacean/ touch-tank experience from the Suffolk County Marine Environmental Learning Center in Southold to Sayville so the students could enjoy the “field trip” without leaving their own elementary school! Finishing off their science life-cycle unit, Mrs. O’Rourke’s, Mrs. Longobucco’s, and Mrs. Fulton’s Second-grade classes were excited to expand their education to include all kinds of wondrous marine life in the traveling camp. Marine Educator Tracy shared intriguing facts that included the following: • Our native species is the Blue Claw Crab, but the students also learned about an invasive species, such as the Asian Shore Crabs. These crabs,

identified by the stripes on their legs, come off boats from China and get released into our waters where they hide in the rocks. Their presence upsets the balance of nature in our local waters. • Horseshoe crabs are NOT crustaceans. They have ten legs, but no antenna. • While Hermit Crabs are scavengers with compound eyes similar to insects, there are significant differences between the varieties: the Flat Clawed Hermit Crab are shy (but bite!) and the Long Wristed Hermit crabs stay tiny. • Allowed to touch the Shore Shrimps, the students also learned about the four different kinds of Grass Shrimp. These adaptable shrimp blend into their environment by turning the same color as the food they eat. They are also scavengers like the Land Hermit Crabs the students were raising in their classrooms. • When they were holding Mud Crabs in their hands, the students learned that these crabs stay small, get their name from hiding and burying into the mud, are scavengers, and like to eat

seaweed. • Only during molting season are Soft Shell Crab’s shells are actually soft , and that’s when they are harvested for eating at restaurants. • The students enjoyed touching and learning about lobsters: one in ten million are white lobsters; blue lobsters are actually a mutation that makes them blue; female lobsters have wider tail fins to fan the eggs and help give the babies oxygen. Some students in Mrs. O’Rourke’s class eagerly shared their reaction to the in-school field trip. Bella Lundquist remarked, “We learned in class that crustaceans have ten jointed legs;” while Courtney Malone considered, “We learned they sleep during the day and are awake at night. That means they are nocturnal” and Meredith Brennan commented about the Soft Shell Crab’s dilemma, “Oh, he just molted, and now people are eating him! I feel bad!” “As you can see,” Mrs. O’Rourke concluded, “we love learning about nonfiction in science! We can’t wait for our ladybug unit in the spring!”

Makris who organized Slocum Elementary School students were recently treated to a presentation by the CM and hosted the morning Performing Arts Center Players, who would tell the story of the Magic Toy Shop. Fire Safety Lesson Connetquot Central School District Edward J. Bosti Elementary School recently welcomed New York City firefighter Matt Barnes to teach the students about fire safety, firefighter equipment

and his experiences as a firefighter. Mr. Barnes spoke about the dangers of fire, methods of avoiding injuries and how firefighters work to protect children and their communities.

The children were reminded about the safety lessons they learn at school, and were encouraged to share firefighter Barnes’ safety tips with their siblings and parents at home.

SINGING & SANTA - Connetquot Central School District’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School’s 3rd, 4th and 5th grade chorus students recently surprised visitors at the school’s Holiday Shopping Experience with several holiday classics. The PTA’s gifts-and-crafts sale also featured a visit by Santa Claus. The Sycamore Avenue Chorus spread holiday cheer and brought smiles to the faces of shoppers and parents in the community.

Even those who remained undecided joined an eclectic discussion group. Regarding the Career Day itself, Mr. Dillon had words of praise for everyone who contributed toward making the program a

beneficial experience for the students. “We were humbled and overwhelmed by the selfless and talented volunteer speakers; all of whom shared generously, their stories on the pathways to having productive and satisfying careers.” In addition, Mr. Dillon acknowledged, “our exceptional administrative team at Sayville High School for working tirelessly to make it happen” as well as the special efforts by “Mrs. Sharon O’Halloran in our main office, who was an extraordinarily helpful professional resource in managing all the correspondence and clerical duties.”

Well-groomed fifth graders greeted their invited guests at the entrance doors of Cherry Avenue Elementary school in the Sayville School District on a very special day. The school community was hosting their first Senior Citizen Brunch for select residents from Bristol Assisted Living facility, as well as senior citizens from the West Sayville area. In every effort to make their guests feel welcomed, helpful students escorted the senior citizens to the so-called “Multipurpose Room.” However, once the guests arrived, there was absolutely no question that the major purpose of this festively decorated room was for very fine dining. Tables were beautifully set in autumn colors, and adorned by centerpieces handcrafted in Mrs.

Laxton’s art classes by the students. In addition, writing pads “Wishing You A Festive Fall” were at every place setting as takehome gifts for each guest. Helping with the finishing touches (providing floor lamps to give the room ambiance), Principal Dr. Lisa Ihne also greeted the diners with pleasant smiles and conversations, while Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Dr. John Stimmel, dropped by to say hello. Aromas from the buffet tables promised of mouthwatering delectables: crepes with fruit sauce, scrambled eggs, sausage patties, ham and potato hash, pancakes and French toast, along with quiche Lorraine, fresh fruit, and assorted baked goods, all prepared and served by the ESBOCES culinary students under

the exceptional direction of Chef Barry Rosenthal and staff. In addition, for their dining pleasure, the guests were treated to the soothing musical selection: What a Wonderful World, performed by the Fifthgrade chorus, under the direction of music teacher, Kristi Woerner. The brunch, an idea developed by the Cherry Avenue Site-Based committee, proved a tremendous success for everyone involved. Fifth graders who volunteered to setup, socialize, or clean up, also practiced their social skills and showed great respect for the senior citizens they met; in turn, the local residents truly enjoyed getting acquainted with Cherry Avenue’s marvelous elementary students.

BRIGHTENING THE DAY - More than 40 Sayville High School students brightened the day for residents at Good Samaritan Nursing Home. Every month students visit the nursing home for a night of fun and games including bowling, cards and manicures. While over 4,500 people attended this free NYC Marine Science Festival about ocean and estuary science, two Sayville students were honored to have their research reports on display. Sayville R.I.S.E. (Research In Science and Engineering) students Junior Jack Novak and Sophomore Jahan Rahman worked hard to prepare

their research reports for the New York City Marine Science Submerge Competition and were delighted that their submissions made it past the initial round for the Hudson River Park Trust and the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) event that was held in October, 2014 on Pier 26, Hudson River Park, TriBeca. Even more exciting, Jahan Rahman’s research was ranked as one of the Top Three in the entire Fair, as judged by renowned scientists Dr. Robert F. Chen, University of Massachusetts Boston and Dr. Stephen M. Uzzo, and is now on display at the New York Hall of Science located in Corona, New York throughout the holiday season in the Horowitz Gallery. Congratulations, Jahan! Sayville Research teacher, Maria Brown explained that Jahan Rahman’s research on the Effect of geographic location and substrate on DNA variation in Limulus polyphemus has been two years in the making. “Jahan has spent the past two summers working in the Sayville High School Genetics Laboratory extracting DNA, and conducting PCR and DNA Purification processes on nearly 150 horseshoe crab samples from six of the 13 beaches he will be studying. Molloy College provides frozen egg samples under their NYSDEC Permit to collect for the high school to study the genetic variation of the horseshoe crabs within and between beaches from Brooklyn to Montauk.”

According to Mrs. Brown, the Long Island samples are compared to variations found in studies conducted in the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays. As their numbers have steadily decreased over the past 30 years, it is important to understand the gene flow dynamics within their populations to best manage the allowable “take” for the medical industry. Horseshoe crab blood provided Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) which is very important for the detection and quantification of bacterial endotoxins. “Jahan is a pleasure to work with.” Mrs. Brown added. “He is a mature young man who is passionate about science. He is hard working and spends most of his days in the genetics laboratory each summer and after school on many days each week throughout the school year. He is well-deserving of this recognition. I am sure that his research will provide new and important information to the scientific community when he completes the analysis of the 13 beaches. His research will be presented at the International Symposium on the Science and Conservation of Horseshoe Crabs in Sasebo City, Japan from June 15th-19th, 2015. It is very exciting that his preliminary research findings will be on display throughout the month of December for the New York community see! I hope the Sayville Community will get out for a fun-filled day of science to visit!”
