Story by Linda Mittiga Last year, as part of Sayville Middle School’s Annual Veterans Day Tribute, the school community planted a commemorative tree in front of the school. While this year, due to social-distancing restrictions, the Annual Veterans Day Tribute had to be canceled, that didn’t stop the Middle School from remembering our Veterans. In addition to preparing and posting a virtual, video presentation with music and speeches, the Middle School went a step farther. Representing the entire school community, Principal Dr. Joseph Castoro, Assistant Principal Brian Decker, and Technology teacher Jim McLaughlin made an extra special effort and stopped at the Sayville VFW. They presented the veterans with the “ceremonial shovel” used last year to plant the commemorative Veterans Day tree. The beautiful plaque was made by Mr. McLaughlin.
The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. EDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for EDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. What has come since that group was formed is truly a miracle.” The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which is located at 350-23 East Main Street. Angels of Long Island typically holds many outreach events during the year such as a Back to School Drive, Thanksgiving Assistance, a Coat Drive, Christmas Help and more. However, due to the pandemic they aren’t holding all of these outreach events. Ones that are held are designed with safety in mind. This past December the charity held a huge Christmas Help outreach event, where many people in need were able to come to an outdoor event and children could choose up to five gifts along with grabbing hats, gloves and scarves. Then their entire family could choose from tasty food items to bring home for a Christmas meal, along with being able to shop for other food items to bring home. All of this was free of charge to the children and families who participated. There are many ways you can help out with Angels of Long Island and there is much more to write about. Sometimes the things we don’t expect and haven’t prepared for turn out to be the most lifechanging experiences. Angels of Long Island is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that somewhat formed itself back in 2015. Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing non-profit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Six years ago these two ladies knew of someone in need of clothing and simply wanted to see if they could be of help. They decided to start a Facebook group in hopes of spreading the word and receiving donations for this person in need. They posted a message and went on with their day, later checking in to find themselves overwhelmed with the response. Whoever doubts that there aren’t people with good hearts that are willing to help a neighbor in need is wrong, fortunately! Debbie and Brittany named the Facebook group Angels of Long Island and members would post about ways they could help others in crisis on Long Island. The group continued to gain in momentum and members, so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island. Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/ donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience. I did not expect to be running a thriving non-profit organization that has a

Bayport-Blue Point Grad Named to 2021 Forbes 30 Under 30 List
Vanessa Sanchez, 27, -a 2011 graduate of B-BP- was selected to Forbes Magazine’s 2021 30 Under 30 list of outstanding young achievers in Science. This annual award is given to 30 Americans under age 30, in several different categories, with noteworthy achievements in their individual fields. Sanchez, a PhD. candidate at Harvard University, conducts research in soft material robotics. Her focus is on developing materials to create wearable garments that can improve the quality of life of elderly and disabled patients, as well as provide greater protection and mobility for health care workers, police, fire, and military service personnel. Similar to the
Smart watch, the garments of the future will also incorporate sensors and microprocessors to provide feedback that can monitor health, recognize and warn of toxic conditions, excessive heat or cold, while increasing user mobility and performance. Following her B-BP graduation, Vanessa initially attended Fashion Institute of Technology, fully expecting to become a garment designer. After learning how to design and construct clothing, she realized that, instead of creating for the runway, she was inspired to develop the kinds of garments that provided functional benefits to the wearer. She then transferred to Cornell University where she studied textiles and fabrics,
both natural and manmade, and how they could be used in constructing functional wearables. After earning her BS in Materials Science degree from Cornell, Vanessa joined the robotics lab at Harvard University where she learned how to construct robots from soft materials. She was invited to stay on at Harvard to complete her graduate studies, and received her MS in Engineering Sciences there in March, 2020. Once she has completed her PhD. requirements at Harvard, Vanessa intends to join the faculty of a university where she will both teach classes and build her own lab to conduct further research.

Connetquot Central School District congratulates the Connetquot High School students who earned AP Scholar Awards from College Board. CHS students were recognized in all three award categories: 91 were
AP Scholars (granted to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams), 27 were AP Scholars with Honor (granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or
more of these exams), and 47 were AP Scholars with Distinction (granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams).

The BAFFA Beat Goes On Although the BAFFA Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, and the BAFFA Art Gallery, are on temporary hiatus due to the COVID pandemic, we are celebrating our 52nd year with a series of videos showing past and present musical performances and virtual exhibits in The Gallery. Currently, The BAFFA Beat Goes On is featuring Christmas carols by Strings Attached, a string ensemble of young people and senior members of
the BAFFA Symphony Orchestra. Special thanks to Rob Reichel of Weeks and Reichel printing, in Sayville, for donating his time and equipment to create the audio recording. The BAFFA Art Gallery is featuring the photography of Mylo Trinagel. At the age of 7, he is the youngest artist the BAFFA Gallery has featured. Mylo, who is on the autism spectrum and is non-verbal, became fascinated with the camera on his mom’s iPhone at the age of 4 and now has
been featured in Newsday on multiple occasions and had his own photo gallery show last year at the Wood Park School in Commack. We invite you to look at this work. Please note that, in the video, another child is reading what Mylo’s parents imagine he might be thinking. You will be amazed at what he captures from his own perspective. Connor’s Christmas Cheer This holiday season, third grader Connor Peters is using his compassion for others to lead his fellow Blue Point Elementary School students in a fundraiser he calls “Connor’s Christmas Cheer.” Through this
fundraiser, the students have so far raised $800 and counting to buy Christmas trees, lights, ornaments, tree skirts and other holiday décor for local families struggling financially. Peters enjoys making a
difference and says “it’s nice to see everyone pitching in to help people.” BayportBlue Point School District thanks Peters for being such a thoughtful member of the community, and a wonderful example for his classmates to follow.

Recovered COVID-19 Patients Battling Long-Term Health Effects COVID-19 has impacted tens of thousands of Long Islanders, and many who have recovered from the virus are now combatting a variety of lingering health issues as a result. Known as “long-haulers” these individuals are living with the chronic effects of the virus that can include organ damage, poor lung function, fatigue, muscle aches, cognitive slowing and headaches. Also, longhaulers still exhibit various symptoms of COVID even after testing negative for the virus. “The long-lasting health effects of COVID-19 could affect anyone at any age, but appears to be more likely with those over the age of 50,” said Director of Infectious Disease at Catholic Health Service’s (CHS) St. Francis Hospital Alan M. Bulbin, M.D. “Those with other comorbidities, chronic illnesses or those who have had a more serious acute infection are also more likely to be impacted. But we have also seen younger patients show long-term health impacts after recovering from the virus.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said it is actively working to learn more about the range of shortand long-term health effects associated with COVID-19. CDC officials said continued research is revealing that many organs, including the lungs and heart, are impacted by the virus. Dr. Bulbin recommends that medical treatment for long-haulers should be managed by an individual’s primary care physician. He said the challenge currently facing doctors in treating those with longlasting health results from COVID-19 is identifying the proper treatment regimen. To help those dealing with long-term health effects of COVID-19, CHS’s St. Charles Hospital now offers a Post-COVID Outpatient Rehabilitation Program. Patients who are at least 14 days past a COVID-19 diagnosis are provided medicallysupervised physical therapy for endurance training, strength training and education.
