Bayport-Blue Point Public Library Opens New Library At Former St. Ursula Center On Middle Road In Blue Point On Saturday, December 18, the Bayport-Blue Point Public Library hosted the grand opening of its new facility on the grounds of the former site of the St. Ursula Center at 186 Middle Road in Blue Point. Bayport-Blue Point Library Director Mike Firestone estimated that more than 1,000 people visited the new facility over the course of the day. The new, 28,573-squarefoot library is more than twice the size of the former location at 203 Blue Point Avenue. “The opening of our new, cutting-edge library represents an exciting milestone in the history of the Bayport and Blue Point communities,” said Ronald F. Devine, Jr., president of the BayportBlue Point Public Library board of trustees. “The large-scale turnout for our opening-day activities is a direct reflection of the community’s deeply felt support for this extraordinary public resource.” Among the speakers at the inaugural ceremony was Town of Brookhaven Councilmember Neil Foley, who played an active role in facilitating the library’s relocation to the 8.27-acre site. Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine and Islip Town Supervisor Angie

Carpenter were among many other ceremony attendees, as well as library trustees Mary Ellen Adams, Stephanie Heineman, Susan Kennedy-Smith and Kim McAward. The Knapp-Swezey Foundation, the JohnnyMac Foundation, the Friends of the Bayport-Blue Point Public Library, and other benefactors were recognized at the event. The Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk, who sold their former retirement complex to the library district, were also singled out for praise. In December 2018, local residents had approved a $16.85-million bond proposition to underwrite acquisition and conversion costs. Patchogue-based BBS Architects designed the new facility. “While preserving the attractive, exterior esthetic of the old building, the new library features a renovated interior offering a wide array of new and enhanced services to community residents,” said Firestone. Among the new features are a “Reading Sanctuary” that retains the original chapel’s blue, stainedglass windows; a dedicated children’s services department; a new teen center; a café and a kitchen for cooking classes; a “Makerspace” for hands-on learning experiences; an

outdoor reading garden; and a Nature Discovery Center. The new site also offers an enlarged Gene Horton Room to celebrate community history and new music and podcasting rooms. The shelves of the larger library are able to display 25-percent more books that had been in storage. About the Bayport-Blue Point Public Library The Bayport-Blue Point Public Library has become a cultural center of rare quality for a community of its size, and one in which the local citizens can take great pride. Founded in 1938 as a Blue Point P.T.A. project, the Library began with a small collection of donated books that were

transported by wheelbarrow to and from the home of local residents. Until 1970, the library was staffed entirely by volunteers, one of the last all-volunteer libraries in the state. The present character of the library owes much to those early volunteers, whose dedication and expertise laid a solid foundation for the book collection and the philosophy of community service. Today, the Bayport Blue-Point Public Library offers not only books, audiobooks, and ebooks, but home entertainment ranging from Blu-rays and DVDs to video games. Online resources for digital downloads or learning tools are a mouse click away, or even at your fingertips on touch

screen devices. Tickets to parks and museums are also available to patrons of all ages. Patrons can
