Throughout our local communities many people have heard of the YMCA of Long Island but don’t realize all that they do. From education to exercise, volunteerism to volleyball, preventative health to preschool, the Y doesn’t just strengthen bodies, but it also strengthens communities through programs. The YMCA of Long Island is truly a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. They welcome people of all ages, from all walks of life and from all backgrounds to join them in making communities stronger and making Long Island a better place to live, work and play! In 2019, the organization celebrated 100 Years of Transforming Lives and is excited to continue to do so in 2020 and beyond. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family
Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school in 11 school districts across the island, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The YMCA of Long Island offers so much and can make a large difference in your life or the life of others. Registration for their winter programs begins on January 19th. Maybe 2020 is the year for you or someone you know to jump in and get involved in a great organization like the Y? Teachers Present Nationally Based on their professional dedication and teaching innovation to the subject matter, Oakdale Bohemia Middle School teachers Mary McGonnell and Dr. Carmela Gustafson were selected to present at the National Council for the Social Studies Conference in Austin, Texas on Nov. 22-23. Their presentation, “Bringing History Home: Your School as Historical Inquiry,” invited teachers and administrators to
learn how to plan and implement a collaborative local history project. This presentation was based on the work of the social studies department at Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the school. For that project, each grade created a different learning opportunity for their students. In sixth grade, the students completed historical research on the history of
the building by reviewing yearbooks, time capsules, and resources from the local community. The seventh grade interviewed former teachers and administrators to create an oral history of the building. The eighth grade completed historical research on demographic, economic and social changes during the last 50 years in and around the school.

Teachers, principals, administrators and community members from Long Island school districts came out to Half Hollow Hills High School West in Dix Hills to watch the Eighth Annual Half Hollow Hills Invitational, which was presented by the school and School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI). Now in its eighth year, the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Long Island Half Hollow Hills Invitational has become a staple of the local FIRST Robotics Competition season. The event also signifies the conclusion of the 2019 season. The 2020 FIRST Robotics
Competition season will begin with the kickoff, which will take place on January 4, 2020 at LIU Post Tilles Center. This year’s event featured 17 teams, which competed using the robots they built for the 2019 SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition that was held in March. The challenge was dubbed DESTINATION: DEEP SPACESM Presented by The Boeing Company, in which two three-team alliances had two minutes and 15 seconds to prepare the rockets and cargo ship with hatch panels, load as many cargo pods as possible and return the robot to its Habitat.
