East Islip Mock Trial Team The East Islip High School Mock Trial team competed in the Empire Mock Trial World Tournament in November, an event that brought 40 teams and almost 500 students from the entire nation and six countries to New York to compete in the Daniel Patrick Moynihan United States Courthouse. This year’s fact pattern concerned a defendant charged with hate crime: an assault based on the victim’s perceived race. East Islip’s students faced off against schools from Oregon, Texas, Connecticut, Utah and
California, with the prosecution team going 3-1 for the weekend. Jacob Arens, Sofia Frigiola, Justin Martinez and Tyler O’Neil were ranked for best performances in their rounds, and sophomore Kaitlyn Rice was recognized as one of the top 15 lawyers at the tournament, bringing home an Outstanding Attorney trophy. This is the fourth year that East Islip has competed in the Empire Mock Trial World Tournament, and the fourth consecutive award for the program, having
won Outstanding Witness Awards in 2015 and 2017, and the Spirit of Empire Award in 2016. She was right! We’ve been making it ever since, and now my daughter makes it for her own family.”

Thin chicken cutlets, pounded Liquid whole beaten eggs in a bowl Large bowl of Rice Krispies Marie’s Creamy Italian Dressing Wash chicken cutlets and pat dry Dip each cutlet in liquid egg Roll cutlets in Rice Krispies bowl Place egg-dipped, Rice Krispies covered cutlets on 10x13 baking sheet Drizzle a generous tablespoon (or two) of Marie’s Creamy Italian Dressing over the top of each cutlet Bake chicken at 325 degrees for 30 minutes. New Year’s Resolutions Work, If You Work Them. Last year, on December 31, 2017, I elected to spend New Year’s Eve quietly at home with my son and one of my brothers, and it was fabulously serene. We cooked a beautiful meal, watched movies, had some heart-to-heart talks and sat together on a big comfy couch to watch the ball drop. That night, as 2017 turned to 2018, I thought about the fact that I hadn’t had my entertainment column since I’d exited an in-house editor position that I worked at from 2005 through 2012. I thought about how much I missed speaking with interesting people and writing their stories. It has always felt like my life’s work. In that moment, I declared to myself that 2018 would be the year that I would bring my column back to life, and this go around, I would own my own intellectual property and be the master of my own fate. I put it out there for the universe to work its magic and let it go. On the morning of January 3, 2018, I sprang out of bed with an inspired idea. I would contact
entertainment editors around the world, introduce myself and my old column, let them know I was looking to begin again and ask if they would like to join my new syndication network. I am not sure what it was, the planets aligning, or perhaps the universe conspiring to make my New Year’s resolution come true, but before I knew it, I had one hundred media outlets across the globe on board. Now, as I approach New Year’s Eve 2018 and New Year’s Day 2019, I look back at what I have accomplished with my entertainment interview column. I am filled with pride that I didn’t just take another aimless trip around the sun this past year. I made every moment count and my New Year’s resolution was accomplished. As you are aware, I have not one, but two columns (of course “Living Well” is the second, and happened most serendipitously). One year ago today, I did not have either. That’s how much a life can change in a year. I don’t state this to brag, but to turn you into a believer, because
I want your New Year’s resolution to happen for you, in spades, in 2019. I want you to look back in December of 2019 feeling on top of the world because you just took the most productive and joyous trip around the sun; greater than you ever thought was within the realm of possibility. We’ve all heard the jokes made about how everyone is going to join a gym and get into the best shape of their life or finally sit down at the computer to write that novel. I get it. But frankly, what does that have to do with you? So some people don’t follow through. Be the person who does. Whether or not you cross more amazing things off your bucket list in 2019 or put your dreams in the “coulda-woulda-shoulda” pile is in nobody else’s hands but your own. It could be something leisure related. Perhaps you have been meaning to take an art class or a course at your local college. Maybe you want to learn to cook. There are no small goals; no small desires. On December 31st, declare it so, and make it so.

SAFETY FIRST - Students at Mary G. Clarkson School were thrilled to receive a visit from the Bay Shore Fire Department. Every kindergarten child was captivated by the presentation of fire equipment, gear and safety. They got to try on the firemen’s helmets and check out the coats and oxygen tanks. The most important discussion surrounded smoke detectors and how important it is to change the batteries every year, the importance of not playing with matches, lighters or candles, and having an escape plan. The high schoolers heard firsthand what it takes to enter a specific career field and what college courses would be optimal, and learned about the skills that they will need when applying for a job and what resources are available to them as they begin their
journey from high school to college to a full-time job. “We want to thank all the professional men and women who attended this event and provided our students with some very important information that will help them to prepare for the next step in their journey to success,” said Israel Malinowitzer, East Islip’s director of careers and student services.

East Islip High School seniors Christopher Palmer and Melissa Sconone were named recipients of the 2017-2018 Suffolk Zone awards. Both students were honored at the annual Suffolk Zone Awards dinner, held at Villa Lombardi’s on November 28th.
The awards are presented to the top male and female physical education students in each Suffolk County high school’s graduating class, by the Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. The criteria for selection include outstanding character and leadership qualities, strong contributions to the overall positive tone of physical education and health classes as well as their school, and an A average or above 90 in physical education classes and an overall grade point average of 3.0.
“Melissa and Christopher make a terrific effort to be cooperative, honest, poised, self-confident, attentive, industrious and enthusiastic regarding all class activities, and they are always working to support the instructional efforts of their classes,” said Stephen Restivo, East Islip’s director of health, physical education and athletics. NY Jets Recognize Park Rangers Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, Islip Town officials and Steve Castleton, NY Jets First Responder and Military Liaison surprised two Town of Islip Park Rangers at a special recognition ceremony in the Islip Town Board Room recently. Town of Islip Park Rangers Anthony LaGrasta and John Rivera were hailed as heroes in the media last month, after pulling a motorist from a freezing Islip canal. When a West Islip restaurateur heard the news, he reached out to his longtime friend, Steve Castleton
who coordinates the NY Jets annual Military Day. Today, Castleton joined Supervisor Carpenter to announce that the NY Jets have invited the pair of park rangers and their families, to attend the NY Jets First Responders Night game Saturday, December 16th. “The whole idea of First Responders Day is to honor First Responders from all over the tristate area for what they do. People forget, that doctors and nurses are First Responders, that park rangers are First Responders, and you never know when you’re going to need one,” said
Castleton, “We appreciate the support of the community,” said Park Ranger Rivera. “It was just a normal day at work for us,” he said. “The Town of Islip is a closely knit community. While there are more than 330,000 residents in the Town, it still maintains that small town feel. Today’s event demonstrates how much people living and working in the Town care about one another. Options for Community Living, Inc. is a local not for profit organization whose mission is to assist individuals and families in need develop their fullest potential for independent living. Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties!

When their care coordinator Fran first met Linda, she and her daughter had been homeless for over a year and were living in a women’s shelter. Linda had experienced a lot of trauma in her life, the greatest of which was learning that she had contracted the HIV virus following a long-term relationship. Fran provided Linda with some housing resources and when she found an apartment, Fran helped her apply for financial assistance to cover the security deposit. Linda has maintained her housing for over a year now! “The most satisfying feeling came over me during my first visit to Linda’s apartment,” said Fran, “when her daughter pulled me by the hand to show me her room.”

Each week I write this column that I started a little over a year ago, but for this issue I wanted to mention a fundraiser that I started through an oragnization that is very dear to my heart, The Water Project. The Water Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that unlocks homan potential by providing reliable water projects to communities in sub-Saharan Africa, which suffer from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation. My fundraising goal is $12,000, which if reached will allow this organization to fully fund a water project in a needy community! If I do not reach my fundraising goal, they will take all that I raised and put it towards helping as many people as possible in sub-Saharan Africa. I can not imagine lacking access to clean water and it breaks my heart knowing that is a reality for some people. I can’t sit back and do nothing about this problem. ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF TREES - Dozens of community groups and service organizations turned out for the 5th Annual Festival of Trees at Brookwood Hall Thursday. Thirty five Christmas trees were decorated on the lawn as part of the annual event presented by the Brookwood Hall Restoration Committee and the Islip Arts Council. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was joined by Town Councilmen James O’Connor, John Cochrane, Jr. and Town Clerk Olga Murray, along with Suffolk County Legislators Steve Flotteron and Tom Cilmi. “The Festival of Trees brings the community together in an age-old tradition, putting everyone in the holiday spirit,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter.
