Islip Town Receiver of Taxes, Alexis Weik, has announced that her office, located at 40 Nassau Avenue, Islip, is accepting payment of 2019/2020 taxes. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the following exceptions: On December 31st the office will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon and will be closed on December 24th, December 25th and
January 1st. “One evening in January has been set aside for those residents who are unable to pay in person during our regular 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. business hours”, said Alexis Weik, Islip Town Receiver of Taxes. “On Friday, January 10th, the office will remain open until 7:00 p.m.,” she added. Residents can save time by visiting the Town of Islip website www.islipny. gov and pay their taxes

The Spirit Of Giving In the spirit of giving, East Islip High School’s boys and girls bowling teams, and coaches Harold Cooley and Judith Fischer, decided to help North Babylon bowling coach Sonny Casale, who recently lost his home to a house fire several weeks ago. EI’s bowling community
hosted a fundraising event on Dec. 8 at East Islip Lanes which included bowling and a large basket raffle. The two local teams donated a gift basket with $100 worth of scratch-off lottery tickets, which was raffled off as one of the grand prizes and collected $400 in donations from

students for a gift card for Casale, which was presented to him by East Islip team captains Natalie Mavrich and Sonny Pico. “Coach Cooley and I are very proud of how the kids eagerly responded to help another coach and give so generously of their time and money,” said Fischer.

New Year’s celebrations can be traced back thousands of years to ancient Babylon. And as with many holidays with deep histories, traditions are the hallmark of many New Year’s celebrations. While many people perform these traditions by rote, it can be interesting to delve into the history behind various components of New Year’s celebrations.
BALL DROP While not everyone can venture to New York City’s famed Times Square to watch the ball drop in person, millions tune in around the world to watch it on television. Original celebrations in New York centered around listening to the bells of Trinity Church ring at midnight, but the New Year’s Eve celebrations were later moved to the New York Times building in 1904. Fireworks were part of those celebrations, but hot ash and sparks falling on spectators led to a ban on fireworks, and event organizers needed another spectacle to draw crowds, according to PBS. Dozens Of Rams Deliver Over 100 Toys To Children
Over 35 college lacrosse players traded their sticks for Santa hats to give children with intellectual and other developmental disabilities a Christmas to remember. Amidst studying for finals and training in the off- season, the Farmingdale State College lacrosse team shopped for over 100 gifts, purchased them and wrapped them to put smiles on the faces of students at AHRC Suffolk’s Seiff Educare Center. “I’ve been doing it for a few years now and a lot of team members who graduate come back to do it” senior and team captain John McMahon said. Santa and Mrs. Claus
greeted the kids, who range in age from 3 to 21-years, and hand delivered a gift to each of them to tell them they had been a good boy or girl this year. Students also received lacrosse shirts with head coach Sean Chamberlain saying “it’s all for the kids.” Giving to others is something Coach Chamberlain learned as a child: “My mother always gave to charities and when she passed away I wanted to do something to carry on her spirit of generosity.” Su Roesler, who is the Education Coordinator at the Educare Center says “anyone can drop off toys, but to see the joy in the players’ eyes as they spend
time going classroom to classroom, interacting with the students and learning about their unique abilities, is the most rewarding part.” About AHRC Suffolk: AHRC Suffolk is a not-forprofit organization which provides programs and services to children and adults with intellectual and other developmental disabilities throughout Suffolk County. Currently more than 2,500 people receive educational, vocational, residential, employment, and respite services through AHRC’s forty-two facilities.

In the days that followed, Sox started coming back to their camp each day, feeling safe around the unit and seeking food and water. Some of the other men had even seen the dog being abused out on the streets. Soon, Sox began staying by their side all of the time, even tagging along on some of their missions. On a recent patrol, Sox ventured too far away from the unit and was whipped with a stick by a local. It was at that time that Captain Dave knew he could never leave her behind to fend for herself. “The bond I have with Sox is something I didn’t expect, but I just can’t leave her behind,” says Captain Dave. “If I don’t bring her home with me I am afraid I’ll always regret it and wonder about what happened to her. I appreciate any assistance people can give in helping me to bring her home with me.” Relocating a dog from the Middle East to America can be done, but it comes at a high cost. He first saw Sox when she was a puppy, finding her caught in concertina wire in their
