December 25 may be Santa’s big day, but in Hispanic culture, it is the 12th day of Christmas, January 6, that is celebrated. “El Dia de los Reyes”, or Three Kings Day, marks the visit by the three Wise Men to the baby Jesus and it’s a day of gift-giving. Adelante of Suffolk County knows that this
has been a very hard year for everyone, but especially for children and the agency raised funds throughout December to purchase toys for children. “In addition to losing their activities at school and having to adjust to all this cyber madness, they also suffer from the imminent adjustment in
their parents’ financial situation,” says Maidaya Maldonado, director of Adelante. “This takes them away from the magic and hope that Christmas brings. But this year, with the intention of rescuing a bit of our Hispanic culture, Adelante will be giving out gifts to the community’s children. The magical gift giving

social studies teacher and Key Club adviser Daniel Falkman. With the help of Key Club President Hannah Lemp and Vice President Michaela Penafiel, the club raised $200 this year. Falkman and the club have raised
more than $1,400 for the cause over the last decade. “Our Key Club is always looking for ways to help in our community as well as looking at problems that face our world,” Falkman said.

Consumers who want to support local businesses should know that positive product reviews can be a great and effective way to do just that. According to Business2Community.com, 88 percent of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. In addition, customers are likely to spend 31 percent more on a business with “excellent” reviews, while 72 percent of consumers say that positive reviews make them trust local businesses more. The 2018 ReviewTrackers Online Reviews Stats report found that star ratings affect consumer behavior, as 80 percent of consumers say they trust 4-, 4.5- and 5-star ratings the most. The good news for consumers is that product reviews need not be long to be effective. ReviewTrackers notes that the average review is now roughly the size of a tweet and has gotten 65 percent shorter since 2010. That means it’s simple, quick and effective to support local businesses via online reviews of their products.

Olivia Zhang named Semper Fidelis All-American

East Islip High School senior and Olivia Zhang was recently named a Semper Fidelis All-American for 2020. She was recognized with an award presentation at the high school on Nov. 20, attended by Staff Sgt. Christopher Rivera, a Semper Fidelis program representative, as well as district administrators and Zhang’s adviser and Semper Fidelis mentor Lisa Rapiejko. Zhang was one of less than 100 student-athletes
nationwide chosen from 5,600 applicants by the U.S. Marine Corps as an All-American based on exceptional moral character and academic performance in addition to noteworthy athletic abilities. In a typical year, Semper Fidelis AllAmericans and a mentor of their choice would have been honored this past summer at the Battles Won Academy experience in Washington, DC, but the event was canceled due to
the COVID-19 pandemic. Serving as Student Council President, Zhang is also a member of her school’s Math Honor Society, Foreign Language Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, Interact Club, Academic Team and tennis and track teams. She also holds the rank of petty officer second class in the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps and was chosen to be a facilitator for the Rotary Club’s Youth Leadership program.

Congratulations to the students in Lauren Daquet’s Food Prep class at Islip Career Center. Every Thursday, these students prepare lunch for staff and students who place orders in advance, which gives them authentic restaurant experience. They organize incoming orders, handle the money, prep and prepare every meal under deadline pressure, and deliver everything as well. During a recent week, they produced more than 100 meals for the lunch rush,
which is three times more than the average Thursday. The class changes the menu each week to reflect what they are learning. The recent marathon rush incorporated sauces, such as marinara sauce for the chicken parmesan, a derivative sauce for the penne a la vodka, and a traditional béchamel to create macaroni and cheese. Said Daquet, “My students are working just as they would in a restaurant. It’s fast paced, it’s stressful.
They are focusing on teamwork, sanitation, time management; they are multitasking. They are training to not only work in a kitchen, but for any job that has similar demands.” Islip Career Center is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that offers Special Career Education Programs, which provide skills training to students with special education needs. This training may enable them to obtain entry-level employment in certain industries.

This Christmas Give the Gift of Saving a Soldiers Dog from being Abandoned Overseas, Time Is Running Out A soldier’s dog is in urgent need of rescue, or he could be left behind as his soldier is being deployed back to the U.S. from serving overseas. Due to reduced flights and heighted requirements for animal travel there are just days left to make this rescue happen and keep this soldier and his dog together. “The United States military does not leave best friends behind. We need your help to reunite them here in America,” explains Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War. “Even small donations will add up to help. We want to give Specialist Lucas the great Christmas present of bringing his dog back home with him.” When soldiers are deployed they can get lonely, miss home, and become depressed. Every once in a while they are lucky enough to come across a stray animal that they befriend, which brings them happiness. That’s exactly what happened to Army Specialist Lucas, when he came across a dog that he’s now desperate to bring back to the U.S. with him now that his deployment is over. “I noticed his calmness, he just wanted some love and attention. I love all animals but he was special,” says Specialist Lucas. “I can’t imagine having to leave my best friend behind, God only knows what will happen to him and my heart will be broken.” The soldier saw the dog walking around, lonely and hungry, near the base where he is stationed. As he considered how he could help, the dog made his way to him, wanting attention. Specialist Lucas decided to name him Boy Dawg, and they instantly made a connection. Each day, the dog would seek
him out for attention and food. Over time, they created a bond that has helped Specialist Lucas during his time being deployed. When he got word that he was going to be sent back home to the states, he couldn’t imagine leaving Boy Dawg behind to forage on his own again. By this point, he considered him part of his family. He reached out to Paws of War to see if they could help him bring his dog back home. Paws of War has helped numerous soldiers to bring their pets back to the U.S. However, this year the mission is more challenging to pull off. The pandemic has severely limited the number of flights coming from the U.S., especially those allowing dogs. Plus, flights from overseas are costly, and there is a lot of red tape that needs to be addressed and logistics to overcome. The only way they can successfully bring Boy Dawg home with Specialist Lucas is with financial help from people in the community. They are urgently accepting donations so they can plan the mission and secure the

COVID-19 has impacted tens of thousands of Long Islanders, and many who have recovered from the virus are now combatting a variety of lingering health issues as a result. Known as “long-haulers” these individuals are living with the chronic effects of the virus that can include organ damage, poor lung function, fatigue, muscle aches, cognitive slowing and headaches. Also, long-
haulers still exhibit various symptoms of COVID even after testing negative for the virus. “The long-lasting health effects of COVID-19 could affect anyone at any age, but appears to be more likely with those over the age of 50,” said Director of Infectious Disease at Catholic Health Service’s (CHS) St. Francis Hospital Alan M. Bulbin, M.D. “Those with other comorbidities, chronic illnesses or those
who have had a more serious acute infection are also more likely to be impacted. But we have also seen younger patients show longterm health impacts after recovering from the virus.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said it is actively working to learn more about the range of short- and longterm health effects associated with COVID-19. CDC officials said continued research is
revealing that many organs, including the lungs and heart, are impacted by the virus. Dr. Bulbin recommends that medical treatment for long-haulers should be managed by an individual’s primary care physician. He said the challenge currently facing doctors in treating those with longlasting health results from COVID-19 is identifying the proper treatment regimen.
To help those dealing with long-term health effects of COVID-19, CHS’s St. Charles Hospital now offers a Post-COVID Outpatient Rehabilitation Program. Patients who are at least 14 days past a COVID-19 diagnosis are provided medically-supervised physical therapy for endurance training, strength training and education. Recognizing a need to develop a program
