he East Islip Middle School’s 8th Grade Leaders Club joined together to collect donations in memory of their beloved teacher Ms. Wendy Rauh, who passed away last year from cancer. Ms. Rauh was an animal lover and advocate, and so the school found it fitting to honor her memory by collecting donations for the dogs and cats at Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center. The group delivered the donations at the shelter’s annual Pet Toy Drive.

For me, two straight days of manically refreshing my browser during both the advance sale and general sale led to nothing but wasted time and ample frustration. ‘Tis the season, indeed. The upside? In
the grand scheme of things, being deprived of live entertainment (temporarily, as I haven’t given up quite yet) isn’t the end of the world. As we prepare to turn the page on yet another year, we should give thanks for the important things – our health, our loved ones, the ability to celebrate with family and friends… perspective. East Islip’s Connetquot Elementary School recognized the 50th day of school on Nov. 20 by taking a time trip back to the 1950s. Students and staff alike dressed up in ’50s style, including poodle skirts, saddle shoes, pink scarves, pedal pushers, fancy glasses and leather jackets.
Student activities included counting to 50, adding numbers up to 50, learning about important events in history during the 1950s and writing about the most important thing the students learned during the first 50 days of school. The event culminated at day’s end with a mock “sock hop” in
the gymnasium, where the entire school danced to the song “We Go Together” from “Grease.” “It was a festive day that reminded us how quickly time flies,” said Principal Deborah Smith, who dressed the part. “It was like crazy, wow – such a cool blast of a good time!”

Kindergarteners at Saint Cyril and Methodius School have gone so far beyond simple ABC’s and 123’s this past month. Shifting to high tech learning, Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Shirreffs introduced the class to Video Conferencing, where this eager group of early childhood learners had the special treat of a video conference that took them around the world! Santa Claus himself spoke with children from the North Pole and from each of the seven continents, including discussions of the different animals in each of their regions. He ended by
reading SSCM students a Christmas story and left them with the view that our great big world can be just a bit smaller through the use of technology. On the local front, the Kindergarten class worked on designing and sending homemade Christmas cards to local veterans. They will be distributed to our heroes through a wonderful organization called We the People Giving Back. They are a non-profit organization, whose goal is to honor the sacrifice of veterans, their families and those in public service, as well as those who have fallen in the name of
Honoring Memory The East Islip Middle School’s 8th Grade Leaders Club joined together to collect donations in memory of their beloved teacher Ms. Wendy Rauh, who passed away last year from cancer. Ms. Rauh was an animal lover and animal advocate and so the school found it fitting to honor her memory by collecting donations for the dogs and cats at Islip Animal Shelter
and Adopt-a-Pet Center. The group delivered the donations at the shelter’s Fourth Annual Holiday Pet Toy Drive, which is an event that collects donations for the 100+ adoptable animals currently waiting for their forever homes. “This is a beautiful example of turning tragedy into inspiration. To see so many children affected by one single educator speaks volumes and this
is truly an outstanding way to honor her legacy,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. The group of students, led by Club Advisor Diane Wahrenburg, dropped off a car-full of donations, and together honored Ms. Rauh by reading personal stories and singing a beautiful song. This was the second year that the school contributed to this event.

Toy Drive a Success The Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center recently hosted its Fourth Annual Holiday Pet Toy Drive, sponsored by the shelter’s volunteer group, Live.Love.Bark, which was successful in collecting more than 700 gallons of toys for dogs and cats. This year’s donations again surpassed the amount collected in previous years. Families across Long Island and even out of state made the trip to donate at the Shelter’s annual fundraiser which was held on Saturday, December 12th, to place treats and toys in the 100+ holiday stockings that hung on each animal’s cage. In addition to toys and treats, nearly 1000 pounds of pet food, an abundance of dog bone boxes, and an impressive amount
of laundry detergent, dish soap, hand sanitizer, towels, blankets, beds and sheets were also donated this holiday season. Various supporters and local companies also co-sponsored the event while others donated items or baskets to raffle at Toy Drive. Live.Love. Bark sold merchandise including both human and pet clothing and 2016 calendars that brought in more than $2000.00, which will be used towards the well-being and care of the 100+ adoptable animals that currently reside at the shelter. The Annual Holiday Toy Drive was started in 2012, with the donation of holiday stockings for each animal at the shelter. Now sponsored by Live. Love.Bark, the event has
tripled in size, collecting much more than just toy donations. In its first year, the Toy Drive saw approximately 50 people visit the shelter to support the effort, whereas this year, over 300 supporters walked the halls, stuffing the stockings and visiting with the animals. The Islip Town Board recently honored the Islip High School Catapult Team for winning the title of Long Island Pumpkin Fling Grand Champions. The team, along with their Coach Kenneth Phalen, were honored at the December 15th Town Board Meeting at Islip Town Hall, each receiving a Certificate of Recognition for their hard work and determination. Each year, an annual Pumpkin Fling, or the “punkin chunkin”
competition takes place blending science, engineering and technology, as teams compete to catapult pumpkins the farthest distance. The Islip High School Catapult Team has been involved in the Long Island Championship Pumpkin Fling since its inception in 2003 and is the only original team still competing. Over those 13 years, the team has taken 2nd place in the event twice, 1st place in the High School age division
11 times and overall Grand Champion 9 times, winning the competition against all contestants, youth and adult. This year they took 1st place in the High School division and were named Grand Champions. They have also broken the Long Island record four times and held it for 11 out of 13 years. This year was no exception again breaking the record with a new distance of 1,131 feet – the equivalent of more than 4 football fields.

The popular Embers Coffee House program returned to East Islip High School on November 25th, with teacher James Connell’s broadcast television and video production classes presenting another talentladen edition of the school’s annual daytime variety show. As in past years, the Embers event was produced and filmed
live by the students themselves over the course of several periods, for audiences comprised of their classmates. Karlie Herrera, Noah Palmieri Cameron Philie, Brandon Potter and Elizabeth Ruhrold acted as student hosts; while producer Ashley Karlin, technical director Sarah Hillman and video switcher Ryan Nelson ran the entire
studio throughout the performances. Others, such as Rob Iadanza and Jacob Owen, served coffee and snacks from behind the counter of the “coffee shop.” Performers included student-musicians Kendra Canavan, John Coffin, John Fasano, Julia Lambert, Danielle Pafundi, Colin Tohill, Meg Tohill and Noelia Vazquez. A crowd favorite, English teacher Michael Petre performed as “P-Nasty,” rapping with students Chris Abbadepalo and Anthony Bacurra. “Everyone really enjoyed the event,” said Connell. “My special thanks go out to all of the performers and staff for working at the event, the teachers who brought their classes, as well as the high school administration who help us run a safe and enjoyable event each year.”

East Islip Middle School eighth-graders in Joe Ancona’s technology classes were the beneficiaries of a recent donation of exotic lumber by Scott Woodrick, an alumnus of East Islip High
School’s Class of 1983 and president of Unique Statements in Wood, Inc. Ancona’s classes, who spend 20 weeks of the school year in traditional hands-on labs, are currently working on a
unit in manufacturing and fabrication, and the donation will allow them to enhance their project with expensive species of wood.
Terrific Trio East Islip High School senior lacrosse players Alexa Mattera, Therese Mittleman and Alexandra Salim signed National Letters of Intent to play at the college level next fall. They were joined by family members and girls lacrosse coach Steven Levy for the December 1st ceremony in Athletic Director Stephen Restivo’s office. Mattera, a midfielder and captain of the team, will attend Hofstra University, where she plans to study education, focusing in special education. On the varsity lacrosse squad since she was a freshman,
Mattera earned All-Division three years in a row and was named to the AllLong Island lacrosse team last season. A triple-sport athlete, she also competed on East Islip’s basketball and field hockey teams. “Hofstra was the best fit for me,” said Mattera. “It has the major I wanted, and is close to home, which is important to me.” Fellow midfielder Mittleman will attend Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. Also a member of the varsity since a freshman, she has played the sport since kindergarten.

“Wesleyan is a liberal arts school and the academic choices will allow me to find out what I want to do, and their lacrosse program is on the rise,” said Mittleman, who is currently undecided on a major. Salim, a goalie, will play for Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina, where she will major in political science. She was named a ScholarAthlete twice and AllDivision in 2012. “Once I stepped onto the wonderful campus, I knew it was home,” Salim said of Campbell.

Helping the Homeless was sparked by a post on St. Mark’s Facebook page, which explained the constant need for socks among the homeless population, especially during the harsh winter months. “We surpassed our goal, donating 513 socks, and the kids were really inspired by the impact they had,” said Tri-M adviser Judith Fischer. Meanwhile, at the district’s Connetquot
Elementary School, Melissa Love’s secondgrade class and Jennifer Rizzo’s kindergarten class participated in a buddy community service project on December 11th. The students created “Socks of Love” by filling pairs of warm socks with soap, a toothbrush and a small toothpaste tube, along with handmade holiday cards, to be donated to a local homeless shelter.

Targeting Careers Islip High School partnered with Custom Computer Specialists to present a special Career Exploration Day on Dec. 9, providing 10th-grade students with the chance to meet and talk with successful people in a variety of careers. Subtitled “The Future in Business Technology” by the students in Islip’s Business Academy, the day focused on making the school’s sophomores aware of the numerous available career paths, the role technology plays in those careers and the skills that are needed to ensure
success. The event began with a meet-and-greet breakfast. The sophomores then transitioned to four different career presentations based on career interest surveys they submitted. Approximately 10 business leaders – including North Shore-LIJ Health System, St. John’s University, Dell, IntraLogic Solutions and Ignition Marketing – representing various industries spoke with students and answered questions regarding their education, training, background and inspiration, as well as “a
day in the life” of their career. “Islip School District is working diligently to not only prepare students for college but to be successful citizens in a global world,” said Superintendent of Schools Susan Schnebel. “In order to aim for the future, one must know the target, but it is tough for kids to aim for a career when they do not know what targets are available. We wanted students to better understand what is available once they graduate from school and college.”

SPECIAL DELIVERY - The Nassau County Emergency Ambulance Bureau Paramedics Association joined with Santa Claus to visit the pediatric patients at the Nassau University Medical Center and bring them a gift for the holidays recently. Bay Shore’s Shannon Bloomquist won Suffolk County Community College’s Chopped-like culinary competition, Battle for the Beach, with a tasty pan seared
chicken with natural au jus, braised endive and herb scented mash potatoes. The competition was held last Friday at the college’s Culinary Arts and Hospitality Center in
Riverhead. Student contestants were presented with a mystery basket of ingredients - a whole chicken, broccoli, endives, red pepper, potato and shallot - that they had turn into a mouthwatering dish in just 90 minutes. The competition is similar to the popular reality television show “Chopped” airing on the Food Network. Top Chef Bloomquist won a seven-night stay at the Sheraton Clearwater Beach Resort in Clearwater, Fla., and an opportunity to work under the supervision of the resort’s executive chef. The prize includes round-trip airfare and ground transportation.

The Children’s Center at United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Suffolk Inc. brought Rockefeller Center to its students this holiday season. The school hosted a tree lighting ceremony with a special visit from Santa on Friday, December 11th. Principal Sherri Glazer said that it is difficult for students to attend events like the Rockefeller Tree Lighting due to limitations, but this year students enjoyed a spectacular event that was just as fun. “Rockefeller Center has nothing on us,” Glazer told her overjoyed students as the tree was lit. Students had an opportunity to place their handmade ornaments on
