Kennedy Elementary School on December 7th, demonstrating how coding works and aiding the younger students in exploring binary mazes. The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify coding, show that anybody can learn the basics and broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with onehour coding activities but expanding to a variety of community efforts. East Islip High School athletes Camryn Kreusher and Christine Llewellyn, both members of the Connetquot/East Islip girls varsity swimming and diving team, participated in the New York State Swimming Championships, held in November in upstate

Ithaca, New York. Both swimmers had earlier qualified for the state event through competing in the Suffolk County championships in Brentwood. Llewellyn, a senior, finished her successful high school career by representing her team in

Kreusher, a sophomore, swam the 200 and 400 freestyle relays, earning seventh overall for the former, and achieved a personal best time while finishing in the top 20 in her signature event, the 100 freestyle. ANGEL TREE EFFORTS - Islip Town employees recently participated in the Salvation Army’s Annual “Angel Tree” program, where local children in need are given the gifts they’ve asked for in the tradition of the holidays. This year, 65 children were ‘adopted’ by Islip employees, and hundreds of gifts, including seven full-size bicycles, a toddler’s trike and dozens of toys, games and clothing items, were purchased and carefully wrapped by employees. The gifts will be distributed to the children and their families just before Christmas.

BREAKFAST WITH SANTA - About 250 children of all ages from the Central Islip Community attended the popular Breakfast With Santa hosted by the Parent-TeacherStudent Association. A full breakfast was offered to guests followed by a visit with Santa, gifts for youngsters and optional pictures with Frozen characters, face painting, a wide array of holiday activities. My Night Before Christmas By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

It’s been over ten years since we last celebrated Christmas Eve at my grandparents’ house. Over 20 years of my life, from childhood onward, were spent around that grand dining room table, enjoying our traditional fare of spaghetti with garlic and oil, complemented by anchovies and walnuts for the adults, just plain tomato sauce for me. This was followed by massive piles of fried shrimp, filet of sole, fried mushrooms, all prefaced by a giant platter of antipasto of course. And then, there was dessert, that array of homemade cookies – baked lovingly by my grandma and grandpa. I’m not sure where the recipes originated from, or if they were my grandmother’s own personal spin on some old favorites, but they were delicious. I recall, somewhere during my college years,

becoming interested in the actual process that went into creating these tasty treats. I set up camp at my grandparents’ kitchen table, rolling dough, cutting it into tiny strips, twirling it into a cookie shape and – best of all – drizzling the icing on top. Yum. How I miss those traditions. Looking through some old photo albums recently, I came upon dozens of snapshots of these Christmas Eve gatherings, pre-dating even little old me in some cases. The decorations may have changed through the years, and even the cast of characters to some degree… but certain things remained a constant. The tree for instance. That big, beautiful Christmas tree which stretched to the cathedral ceiling, adorned by what seemed like hundreds of sparkly ornaments… surrounded by dozens of shiny presents, wrapped with

perfection by my grandfather. And always, at the end of the night, there would be that “one more” gift that would be brought up from the basement, usually the best of all. But above all that – the presents, the food, the frenzy to have everything run perfectly from beginning to end within a reasonable interval of time (seven hours or so, give or take) – were the memories made with those people, in that house. Priceless memories. When I grow up, I had always thought, I want every Christmas Eve to be exactly like this. Of course, when you’re a child, they don’t have the heart to tell you that things will never be quite the same, or that perfect, ever again. How grateful I am that it was though, even for a brief moment in time. Merry Christmas to all. May your Eve bring even a hint of that same magic.

Signing on to Play East Islip High School senior and Scholar-Athlete Angelina Perrone signed a National Letter of Intent on December 6th to play field hockey and lacrosse next fall for Belmont Abbey in Belmont, North Carolina. “It’s a small school, which makes for a better living experience, and is in a beautiful area,” said Perrone, who plans to major in sports management. “It’s only 15

minutes from Charlotte, which has major sports teams, which will be helpful for internships.” A three-sport athlete, Perrone plays forward for the varsity field hockey team and midfielder on the varsity lacrosse squad; she also is a member of the varsity basketball team. For eight weeks this fall, Brentwood North Middle School students have learned about various aspects of health through a collaboration between Southside Hospital and Johnson & Johnson through their Project Perfect workshop. Approximately 30 students attended weekly seminars regarding good nutrition, self-esteem, community service and other topics. Following a

family dinner on November 30, parents were provided with an insight into the program and the topics presented over the eight weeks. Johnson & Johnson teamed up with Southside Hospital and other local community groups affiliated with Southside’s Community Outreach and Health Education Council (COHEC) to bring these educational sessions to Brentwood North Middle

school students. Southside Hospital supplied the lecturers as well as the healthy snacks and dinner. “Providing health education to our youth is incredibly important,” said Donna Moravick, NP, executive director of Southside Hospital. “When speaking with the students and the parents, it is apparent they learned about healthy options and will hopefully practice what they have learned.”

On Wednesday December 7th, the Suffolk Zone NYSAHPERD (New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance) held its annual Student Awards Dinner at the Hyatt Wind Watch in Hauppauge. This awards dinner recognizes one outstanding physical

education male and female student from each Suffolk County School District. These students were selected by the directors of physical education and their physical education teachers for outstanding physical education achievement. The award criteria is Physical Education achievement, scholastic

achievement (minimum 3.0 GPA on 4.0 scale), outstanding character, Physical Education leader, participation in extra curricular activities, and being a role model for peers. Bay Shore Schools congratulates Diego Colonna and Ariel Beane as this years award winners!

A Wish Granted On Friday, December 9th, as shoppers rushed between stores at the Westfield South Shore Mall in an effort to complete their holiday shopping, a little bit of holiday magic was about to happen at Macy’s. Bay Shore High School senior Melina Mazzie was about to be granted a wish by Make-A-Wish. And, in a rare occurrence for such a ceremony, she was going to give Make-A-Wish a gift as well. Just before her 11th birthday in 2010, Melina was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a form of Aplastic Anemia. After months of testing to determine why the then5th grader was experiencing a number of symptoms, doctors determined that her bone marrow was shutting down. Melina needed a bone marrow transplant immediately to save her life. Her brothers, Christian and Ryan, who are twins, were both tested. On Melina’s 11th birthday, she received what she calls “the best present” – her brother Ryan was a perfect match. One month later Melina entered the hospital, and after a week of intense chemotherapy, she received the transplant. After 5 weeks in the hospital Melina returned home to a year of isolation, missing the entire 6th grade. Melina returned to school for 7th grade, only to find out a year later that her medical concerns were not over. After suffering a series of strokes, she was diagnosed with CNS Vasculitis, a condition which required her to receive additional chemotherapy and be put on a steroid regiment. With these medications, her condition was stabilized.

While she was in the hospital awaiting her bone marrow transplant, Melina was granted a wish from Make-A-Wish. However, due to her continued medical battles, her wish was unable to be granted until now. On December 9th, National Believe Day, Macy’s and Make-A-Wish choose a number of children from across the country to celebrate in an effort to highlight the work done by Make-A-Wish. During the holidays, Macy’s collects Holiday Wish Letters and donates $1 to Make-AWish for every letter received. On National Believe Day,

however, that amount is doubled to $2 per letter. When Melina heard about the annual Believe campaign, she knew she wanted to do something to give back to Make-A-Wish. She had already donated her hair prior to receiving chemotherapy (and inspired many friends and family members to do so as well) and participates in a walk each year to raise money for Hope

& Heroes, which is an organization that funds the lifesaving work on childhood cancer and blood disorders at Columbia University Medical Center. But this time she wanted to give back to Make-A-Wish in particular to help other children be able to see their wishes come true. Melina began a campaign to collect Holiday Wish Letters to bring with her to the National Believe Day celebration. With the help of her family, friends and the Bay Shore School District, she was able to surprise MakeA-Wish with 13,764 letters, the equivalent of a $27,528 donation! After walking through the mall, led by members of the Bay Shore Fire Department band, and flanked by her parents, Maria and Tom, Melina stood in front of a crowd filled with her friends, teachers and members of the Bay Shore community to announce her final tally. “I was so proud to see the Bay Shore Schools family come together for Melina,” said Superintendent Joseph Bond. “Her mission to collect letters for Make-A-Wish was brought to my attention by several Board of Education members, and all of our resources were marshaled to make Melina’s total an incredible one. Although I knew she would succeed in giving back in a big way, I, like everyone else, was simply stunned by what this young lady was able to accomplish. Everyone at Bay Shore Schools was glad to support her efforts.” Way to go, Melina! You have truly inspired your community and reminded us all, “Anything is Possible… Remember to Smile Today!”

On the evening of December 5th, members of the Bay Shore community rallied together to experience the story of Mr. Romeo. Mr. Romeo graciously shared his experience during the Vietnam War with members of the Bay Shore community through a museum walk/ open forum discussion. Mr. Romeo’s compelling experience during the Vietnam War sparked the interest of community members, which led to an open discussion, geared at questioning the morality of war and the steps we can take as Americans to resolve our differences overseas. A collaborative effort was made by community members to come together and discuss the realities of the Vietnam era. Frank Romeo comments, “The men I served with in Vietnam are mentally still there. It is up to you and me to share the experiences of the veterans of the Vietnam War to ensure that their legacy is not forgotten.” Mr. Romeo’s story will echo for generations in the

children. He has helped us on numerous occasions, and his advice, his counsel, his support and his honesty make us proud that Phil Boyle is an East Islip graduate.”

Over the course of three days, Mr. Frank Romeo, Bay Shore High School Class of 1967, provided students and staff of Bay Shore High School with a first hand account of his experience as a soldier during the Vietnam War. Mr. Romeo’s presentation commenced on December 5th where students and staff were invited to participate in a museum walkthrough/presentation documenting Mr. Romeo’s experience as a soldier during the Vietnam War. Using art and artifacts indicative of the time period to tell a story, Mr. Romeo, along with other Vietnam veterans, produced the artwork that was on display. Mr. Romeo’s story continued to be told when he invited students to hear him speak more in depth about his journey as a soldier on December 6th and 7th. Mr. Romeo entertained any questions that students had regarding his experience as a soldier and struggles with P.T.S.D. at the December 6th and 7th presentations.
