with Jamie Lynn Ryan Just five days until Christmas, and I suppose I should begin my shopping soon. It’s funny, with the sole exception of Black Friday when I purchased precisely one gift - I haven’t done so much as compile a list in the days that have elapsed. Perhaps it’s because, save for the usual collection of gift cards and standard annual favorites, there is rarely an occasion when anyone can offer a suggestion of what they would like. Not that I am much better when it comes to this. Most years, a gift card is just as good as any particular object I can come up with, or maybe tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Of course, there are always my two standbys - a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey,” and a puppy. Yes, the 3 year-old child in me hasn’t quite grown

KIC Inductees

Seven Islip High School students – Anthony Ardolina, Lauren Cottral, Logan Powers, Delaney Hardekopf, Meg Rumplick, Christian Muller and Crystal Toro – were recently inducted in the Keep Islip Clean Junior Commissioner program

during a ceremony at Brookwood Hall. The Islip students will meet each month with junior commissioners from other districts in the town to discuss areas of environmental concern and address them with each KIC club and its

adviser. The KIC Junior Commissioner program at Islip High School has resulted in numerous projects that take place on Pond Day as well as recycling programs and beautification projects.

HARMONY CAFÉ

Harmony Café is a non-profit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door. They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. When one enters Harmony Café, they will notice there’s a suggested donation of $10, but guests have the option to pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. This café currently offers one 2 ½ hour event (a fresh meal and entertainment)

on the second Wednesday of each month. They operate out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, founder and director Rosemarie McCarthy has a goal to open a storefront for the Café which will operate five days a week for lunch and dinner. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: event planning; volunteer coordinating; servers and kitchen help; community outreach and fundraising. Most importantly, volunteer board members are needed. REINFORCING LESSONS - Scholars on Team 63 at Bay Shore Middle School are making sure they understand the material being taught. They recently reinforced a science lesson by taking quizes on the program Quizizz, using laptops from one of the VOLUNTEER SUPPORT - There are many school programs, events and activities school’s laptop carts. that would not be possible without the dedicated and civic-minded scholars in the Bay Shore High School Interact Club. Each of the scholars in this club signs up to help in whatever way they can. The Family Engagement program is just one of the many activities they work to support. They provide on-site babysitting, assistance with young scholar activities, serve food and provide language translation.

Food Drive a Success

On Saturday December 9th, Boy Scout Troop 43 & Cub Pack 153 both sponsored by St. Peters by the Sea in Bay Shore partnered with State Senator Boyle’s office & PRONTO of Long Island to run a Food Drive at Shoprite in Bay Shore. The scouts and their

leaders braved the first snow of the season for a period of 4 hours collecting enough donations to fill the back of Pronto’s van. Pronto of Long Island is a community based outreach organization that lives up to their slogan “People Helping People Today.” Donations are always

welcome but are especially needed during the colder months. The Scouts are thankful to both Shoprite in Bay Shore for allowing them to use the location and to all the customers for their generosity.

Tower Tech Students at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School recently took part in a “Tower Challenge,” part of the district’s new STEAM program offered to all students in grades K-5.

The objective was to create the tallest freestanding tower using 10 large red cups, 10 paper cups and 20 small clear cups. Technology teacher William Lackner, serving as East Islip’s STEAM leader

All-County Gymnasts this year, has been working with classroom teachers as they bring their students to the new makerspace rooms located in each of the four elementary schools.

Two East Islip studentathletes – high school freshman Cassie Bergin and eighth-grader Evie Orlando – have been named All-County gymnasts. Four additional members of the school’s gymnastics team – seventh-graders Gabby Maciora and Sarah

Vasquez, sophomore Sofia Ferrezza and junior Allison DellOrto – were recognized as All-League for 2017. At the Section XI Suffolk girls gymnastics individual championships, Bergin won the county championship on balance beam with a score of 9.375,

and will represent East Islip and Section XI at the state championships, to be held in March 2018 at Cold Spring Harbor High School. As a seventhgrader, Bergin was also a member of the Section XI state girls gymnastic team.
