‘Tis the season of holiday parties and special events. The festive atmosphere and free food and drinks can make it very tempting to forsake your healthy eating plan! Try these tips to celebrate the season without overdoing it. • Keep portions in check. Put less on your plate and pass on that second helping. Split appetizers, entrees and desserts with others. Use a smaller plate when possible so a small serving will look like more. • Bring a dish. If the event is a potluck (or even if not), offer to contribute a lighter option. That way, you’ll have at least one healthy choice. • Go easy. Avoid loading up on foods that are fried, buttered or have a lot of cheese or cream. Look for fruit, veggies and dip, whole grains and baked or grilled items. • Be prepared. Have a healthy, high-protein, high-fiber meal or snack before you go to the event. If you’re not hungry it will be easier to avoid overeating. • Go slow if you drink alcohol. Drinking plenty of water between drinks will quench your thirst and fill you up so you’ll be less likely to overindulge. • Treat yourself. Try bite-sized tastes or split portions of desserts, candy and other treats. Let yourself enjoy some of the indulgences of the season without overdoing it. • Balance is the key. For example, if dinner is going to be a feast, opt for a lighter lunch. • Eat smart at holiday events. They often serve up extra helpings of less-thanhealthy foods. If you’re a guest, eat a healthy snack before you go. If you’re the host, challenge yourself to offer some delicious healthier options using our recipes and cooking tips.

Receiver Of Taxes Announces Extended And Holiday Hours Islip Town Receiver of Taxes, Alexis Weik, has announced that her office, located at 40 Nassau Avenue, Islip, is accepting payment of 2019/2020 taxes. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the following exceptions: On December 31st the office will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon and will be closed on December 24th, December 25th and
January 1st. “One evening in January has been set aside for those residents who are unable to pay in person during our regular 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. business hours”, said Alexis Weik, Islip Town Receiver of Taxes. “On Friday, January 10th, the office will remain open until 7:00 p.m.,” she added. Capozzoli Earns Second Place Led by student Taylor Capozzoli’s outstanding pitch contest performance, East Islip High School’s virtual enterprise class recently participated in the sixth annual Virtual Enterprises International Business and Entrepreneurship Leadership Conference, held at LIU Post in Brookville. Following a powerful keynote address, the students attended breakout sessions of their choice led by prominent
business professionals in several career pathways. A total of 86 VE firms from 55 Long Island high schools competed at the conference. Each firm developed an elevator pitch for a potential investor for their startup business idea. One student from each firm delivered this pitch in front of a panel of business leaders who served as judges. The pitches were evaluated on how compelling and informative they were, as well as on the speaker’s
delivery. Capozzoli delivered a flawless pitch in both rounds for the firm HEMPire, earning second place overall, and teacher Ray Babinsky’s class was awarded a $500 prize. “Taylor is a natural, and demonstrated incredible confidence,” Babinsky said. “Some of these pitch presentations were incredibly professional and well-conceived, so Taylor’s recognition is quite the accomplishment for the entire class.”

Celebrating Good Character Sayville School District in a partnership with Long Island Coalition Against Bullying is joining the fight against bullying on Long Island with the LICAB Community-Leadership Award. Not only will this new program bring socialemotional awareness into schools, it will honor select students who show outstanding conduct in their daily lives. Sayville’s Student Services Director Jillian Makris and LICAB Executive Director Joe Salamone launched this character recognition program for Sayville students, K-12, who “always do what is right with no expectation of reward.” This is especially important in a society where “talent” often eclipses “character” for accolades. “Of course, there is a place for talent to be celebrated,” Mrs. Makris said at the first-ever Community Leadership Award ceremony, “…but sometimes what is not celebrated is character— making the right choice.” After mentioning one of her favorite quotes—talent is a gift, but character is a choice—to the students and their family members attending the celebration, Mrs. Makris acknowledged that the five students
(one from each school) who were being honored have daily demonstrated those characteristics of compassion, kindness, empathy and integrity that earned them recognition. She thanked them for contributing to “the moral fabric” of each of their schools. She also thanked the parents “who have been instrumental as the most important people in your child’s life.” Mr. Joe Salamone explained to the students and families the importance of offsetting the negative influences that sway behavior. “We wanted to give an award to students who are just getting up every day and doing the right thing because it’s the right thing to do. Our [LICAB’s] primary goal is to combat bullying on Long Island and…good character contributes to the battling of bullying. If you have good character, you are more than likely not going to be a bully… you are more than likely going to be somebody who stands up for somebody who is being bullied, and those are the kind of characteristics we’re seeking to reward here.” Mr. Salamone also admitted that upon reviewing the nominations, he was pleased to see how many more Sayville
students in all the buildings qualified for the award. [The Awards will be distributed quarterly during the academic year to other students]. “The five that were chosen today,” Mr. Salamone continued, “were five of the best and the first to receive this award…. This is the inaugural distribution of these awards anywhere on Long Island.” As the recipients were called up to receive their awards, they were congratulated by the faculty who nominated them along with Mr. Salomone who presented them with the framed certificate and a monetary prize. SANTA HOPS FRONTIER FLIGHT TO WEST PALM BEACH - Islip, NY – Santa Claus gave Rudolph, his sleigh and eight reindeer a break Tuesday, and boarded a Frontier Airlines flight from Long Island MacArthur Airport to West Palm Beach, Florida for a little R&R before his long midnight ride Christmas Eve. Santa posed for pictures with passengers, made note of their Christmas lists, and spread holiday cheer while on board the 6:05am nonstop flight. L’Etoile Appointed Dance Instructor Professionally trained dancer and educator Natalie L’Etoile of East Islip has been appointed dance instructor at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts. She brings more than 20 years of experience to LIHSA’s dance department faculty. Ms. L’Etoile began her career in Anchorage, where she served as dance instructor, company dancer and choreographer for the Alaska Dance Theatre, as well as an adjunct professor of modern dance at the University of Alaska. From there, she brought her teaching skills to the New York City School system. She served as a dance teaching-artist for the Learning through Expanded Arts Program (LEAP), and taught physical education at the Middle School for Gifted and Talented students. Ms. L’Etoile holds a bachelor’s degree in modern dance from the
L’ETOILE APPOINTED DANCE INSTRUCTOR - Dancer and educator Natalie L’Etoile of East Islip has joined the faculty at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts as a dance instructor. University of Utah and a master’s degree in Physical Education from Queens College. She holds New York State certification as a teacher of both dance and physical education.
She intends to combine her expertise in dance, choreography, fitness, nutrition and yoga to help build enrollment in what she sees as “a wellestablished, strong dance program” at LIHSA. Ms. L’Etoile’s goal as a teacher is to give her students every opportunity to grow and succeed, not only as dancers, but as wellrounded individuals. “The more they study their art, the more experience they will get. The more range they have as performers, the more versatile they will be when it comes time to choose a career. The more they diversify themselves, the more options they will have professionally.” “This feels like coming home,” Ms. L’Etoile said of her new position on the LIHSA dance faculty. “This school is very welcoming; there’s a family feel at LIHSA. I’m thrilled to be here.”

Frosty, Elsa Join Community During Holiday Parade
Frozen, LI Ducks Mascot Quacker Jack, Frosty and the Grinch joined Supervisor Angie Carpenter, Islip Town Board members and local elected officials at the Islip Chamber of Commerce’s annual Merry on Main Holiday Parade. Hundreds lined Main St. as colorful floats,
illuminated cars and jeeps, community groups, and service organizations walked the parade route. Saint Nick joined the fun, waving to the crowd from high atop an Islip Fire Department Ladder Truck. The parade culminated with the lighting of the Town of Islip Christmas Tree in front of Town Hall.
“Our thanks to the Islip Chamber of Commerce for putting on this wonderful family event,” said Supervisor Carpenter. “This is truly a highlight of the holiday season here in Islip, and is something we look forward to each year,” she added.

Leadership Conference, held at LIU Post in Brookville. Gifts to Go CEO Thomas Vitale pitched the company to a panel of judges – including various business owners and college professors and administrators – and over
2,800 audience members. Gifts to Go and fellow Islip VE firm Fashion Cents will compete in a regional business plan and trade show competition in January.

Brandon Kelly and Dan Micheletti were named East Islip High School All-Conference; and Tim senior boys lacrosse players Rogers earned Academic Nick Agresta, Anthony All-County honors. Carroll, Robert Kreush and Colby Rogers signed national letters of intent on Dec. 5 to continue their sports careers in college next fall. Agresta, a defenseman and four-year varsity player for East Islip, signed with Wingate University in North Carolina. He plans
to major in education. Carroll, who plays defense and long stick midfielder, will play for Hofstra University, where he will major in sports medicine. A member of the varsity lacrosse team since eighth grade, he served as captain and earned AllCounty status his last two years. A two-sport athlete, he also was named captain and All-County for football

in his senior year. Kreush, a midfielder, signed with SUNY Binghamton, where he plans to study science. A Scholar-Athlete, he earned All-County status in football and All-County honorable mention in lacrosse. Rogers, who will play face-off for Jacksonville University, plans to major in nursing.

Nominations Being Accepted For Black History Celebration 2020 The Town of Islip is currently accepting nominations for the 2020 celebration of Black History. The Town of Islip will celebrate Black History in February by honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to the Islip community, and live or work in the Town of Islip. The celebration will take place at the February Town Board Meeting. To nominate a community member, you
must submit a nomination form before the deadline listed below. The forms and category list can be downloaded from our website by visiting www. islipny.gov.
