The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Correction Officer Recruits, as part of their Academy training, must now complete a community service project prior to graduation. Correction Officer Recruit Class 13-153 performed a successful food drive and will deliver their donation to the Lighthouse Mission in Bellport, on Friday, December 13th.

The recruits are scheduled to graduate on Friday, December 20th. Sheriff Vincent DeMarco implemented the community service requirement this summer to emphasize to new officers the importance of giving back to their communities, to encourage team building and to enhance morale. “I think it’s important

that members of law enforcement understand their roles as public servants. Community service is a way to reinforce that message, and it helps to foster important connections between our officers and the communities they are entrusted to serve,” stated DeMarco.

TIP #4: Make sure you can hear. While seeing the environment is important, you also want to be sure you can hear approaching traffic and other noises. Avoid listening to music or engaging in conversation that may prevent you from hearing oncoming traffic or snow removal equipment. TIP #5: Anticipate ice. Be weary of thin sheets of ice that may appear as wet pavement (black ice). Often ice will appear in the morning, in shady spots or where the sun shines during the day and melted snow refreezes at night. TIP #6: Walk steps slowly. When walking down steps, be sure to grip handrails firmly and plant your feet securely on each step. TIP #7: Enter a building carefully. When you get to your destination such as school, work, shopping center, etc., be sure to look at the floor as you enter the

building. The floor may be wet with melted snow and ice. TIP #8: Be careful when you shift your weight. When stepping off a curb or getting into a car, be careful since shifting your weight may cause an imbalance and result in a fall. TIP #9: Avoid taking shortcuts. Shortcuts are a good idea if you are in a hurry, but may be a bad idea if there is snow and ice on the ground. A shortcut path may be treacherous because it is likely to be located where snow and ice removal is not possible. TIP #10: Look up. Be careful about what you walk under. Injuries also can result from falling snow/ice as it blows, melts, or breaks away from awnings, buildings, etc. Following these tips will help ensure that you survive the snow and ice season safely. A Time For Rest & Relaxation

When I was in kindergarten, I wanted to be a policeman. When I was in fourth grade, I dreamed of becoming a pro football player. In middle school, I wanted to be a businessman. Now, as I am supposed to be ﬁnalizing the college application process, I have realized that I have no idea what I want to be. This is undoubtably the most important decision I have had to make in my life. Unsurprisingly, it is also the most stressful. Combined with the already demanding Advanced Placement course load, I am also

juggling clubs, sports and now dozens of college applications. There are so many tasks on the checklist that I call my daily routine that it is hard to cram them all into a twentyfour hour time period. Being a student is a fulltime job. Sure, I don’t have to worry about bills, and I don’t have many major responsibilities; but sometimes the stress is too much. As much as I enjoy going to school and being as involved as I am, there comes a time when I just need a break. Thankfully, in just a few days it will be Christmas Vacation.

Over two weeks off with no responsibilities. By then, I will be all done applying to college. The ball will be in their court. At that point, there will be nothing I can do but wait and hope my dream school makes the right decision. Once Christmas Vacation rolls around, I won’t have to worry about anything. I will ﬁnally be able to focus on having a great senior year. There is plenty of time to discover what career is right for me. For now, I am content just being a dedicated student, and more importantly, a happy kid.

Savor The Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan One week. Seven days. One hundred sixty eight hours. (We won’t get into minutes and seconds – you get the idea.) This is precisely how much time remains before Christmas. And with the virtual countdown comes that age-old holiday anxiety, the mad rush to ﬁnish writing out the greeting cards, shopping for gifts, wrapping, cleaning, cooking, baking… whatever your traditions call for in the race to conjure that yearly sense of merriment. Right. The holiday spirit. That is what all the fuss

is about, after all. Lest we forget the reason for all the racing around, the endless “To Do” lists, the exorbitant credit card bills… all for a day or two of celebration with family and friends, neighbors and loved ones. Seems like an awful lot of effort doesn’t it? This is why, when everyone else is busy ripping down the Christmas decorations on December 26th, I say wait. Savor it a little longer. Extend the festivities. You put all that time and effort into preparing for the occasion – might as well enjoy it as long as you can.

Of course, all of this is irrelevant to those who start their Christmas shopping in January and are ﬁnished decorating by Halloween. Seriously folks – enjoy one season, and one holiday, at a time. What’s the big rush? This time of year is not one long list to be accomplished in as little time as humanly possible; it is made up of moments to be cherished, memories to reﬂect upon and add to with each passing year. MUSICAL PERFORMANCE - Young student-musicians from Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School’s band, orchestra and chorus performed at the Barnes & Noble bookstore in Bay Shore on December 6th as part of a PTA fundraiser. The evening also included a display of RCK student artwork and RCK teachers serving as guest readers.

K-9 Visit

Complementing the East Islip School District’s ongoing emphasis on STEM (which stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics), students from two of East Islip Middle School’s clubs were recently visited by NAO, an educational model robot created by Aldebaran Robotics. The X-STEM Club, advised by Darcie Schlott, and the Technology Club, advised by Brian Heyanka, were treated to a special demonstration of the robot’s abilities and programming capabilities by presenter Brian McEnaney of Teq, an educational technology company. Using a laptop, students were given the opportunity to program simple commands for the

humanoid robot, whose motions closely correspond to the way in which human beings move. The robot’s software allows students to use a preset array of commands to make the robot move or speak. More advanced students can write code to make the robot perform any function that they desire. The NAO has also been used as a tool to enhance interaction for children on the autism spectrum. McEnaney also provided the students with a synopsis of the importance of computer science and job prospects in that growing field, one of great interest to the students in the X-STEM and Technology clubs. “The turnout for the demonstration was excellent and I was really

excited to see how the students responded to the robot presentation,” said Schlott. “We need more students to be enthusiastic about STEM.” Schlott hopes that the school is eventually able to acquire one of these robots for more intensive student educational immersion in future tech. “The NAO robot is the leading technology at the moment,” she explained. “Allowing our students to write code for the robot to be able to interact would be the best way to prepare them for their future. Currently we rely on computers every day of our lives. Our students need to be prepared for the world that awaits them after graduation.”

The “Embers Coffee House” program returned to East Islip High School on November 26th, with teacher James Connell’s broadcast television and video production classes presenting another talentladen edition of the school’s annual daytime variety show. As in past years, the Embers event was produced and filmed live

by the students themselves over the course of several periods for audiences comprised of their classmates. Songul Camlica and Lauren Iadanza served as student hosts, while others such as Brook Ryan and Alyssa Rotunno served coffee and snacks from behind the counter of the “coffee shop.” Among the many musicians who

performed were Matt Carillo, Dave Cisek, Joe Janover and Sam Sharkey. “Everyone really enjoyed the event,” said Connell. “My special thanks go out to all of the performers and staff for working at the event, the teachers who brought their classes, and security guard John Callagy.”

Coffeehouse Returns

Last month, members of the TSA K-9 inspection unit from JFK airport visited Gardiner Manor students in Mr. Dooley’s classroom for an informative and exciting presentation. This visit helped students learn about dogs that save lives. One student, Ethan Scott, made the class visit possible after expressing his interest in the topic to his father. Ethan’s father was able to coordinate a visit by members of the TSA K-9 inspection unit to Gardiner Manor School. Students met TSA canine agents, LLangone

and Iiken. Their handlers, Maya and Rene, discussed their experiences working with these amazing dogs, as well as training methods and specific procedures, and demonstrated how the dogs use their keen sense of smell to detect possible threats. The experience became even more memorable after one of the students learned that the dog Iiken was named after a close family friend who had lost their life during the tragic events of September 11th. Iiken’s handler was truly moved by this revelation

and gave the student a bracelet he wore in honor of the close family friend. This was an unforgettable moment for the students, handlers, and adults in attendance. The students were extremely thankful to the TSA agents for taking time out of their day to visit Gardiner Manor School, as well as to Ethan and his father for putting the event together. It was an enriching experience for both students and their teachers.

“The STARS food drive was a huge success,” said guidance counselor Nicole Vincenti, the club’s adviser this year. “Some students had to make multiple dropoffs at the school because they collected so much from their assigned areas. We filled up seven vans full of food for a total of six local churches and food pantries. The students had such a great time making a difference.”

Fourteen East Islip School District fourthgrade music students from Connetquot, Ruth C. Kinney and Timber Point elementary schools were chosen to represent East Islip at the 5th Annual Suffolk County Music Educators Association’s PEAK Festival, held November 23rd at Northport High School. Dedicated to the idea of fourth-graders learning and experiencing music, PEAK (which stands for Parents, Educators and Kids) is a full-day workshop where young musicians are given the opportunity to play and perform with other Suffolk students. East Islip music teachers – including Kathleen Carter, John Murphy, James

Santoro and Malgorzata Strzelecka – and parents participated with the students in workshops featuring music and dance of Australia, songs of Native Americans, and traditional folk dance and music from New England and Latin America. The music from these world cultures was learned in authentic style and languages, and performed on a variety of traditional and unusual instruments. The festival culminated with an informal sharing session during which students, parents and teachers performed the songs and dances learned in the workshops, and the grand finale featured all of the students singing in the PEAK Chorus.

“I am so proud of our fourth-grade music students who were so very enthusiastic and performed beautifully on stage,” said Timber Point’s Carter. “Students and parents alike thoroughly enjoyed themselves at the workshops,” said Strzelecka, of RCK. “It was a musically and culturally rich experience for all.” Added Murphy, who teaches at Connetquot, “It was wonderful to see our students along with their parents, joyfully singing and dancing together. The folk dances and music offered a cultural tour around the world without ever having to leave Long Island.”

Hospital’s Tree Lighting this year. The event included fun activities and an opportunity to remember someone special with an angel bearing the names of those being honored or memorialized displayed in the hospital lobby during the month of December. Sculpture Provides Inspiration Local artist Todd Arnett has been using his creativity on the grounds of Camp-Pa-Qua-Tuck by creating a wooden sculpture near Kaler’s Pond. The unnamed sculpture was carved out of an elevenfoot tall, 800-pound black cherry tree and made into a Phoenix. It was placed on a 5,000-pound illuminated base on November 10 at the camp. The sculpture was inspired by the ideas of Gail Saetta and Matt Russell, Bradstock Music Festival volunteers who have been organizing the festival at the camp annually and have been installing lights throughout the camp for the past two years. When it looked like Bradstock would no longer continue because another music venue was not able to present the festival any longer, Camp Pa-QuaTuck offered to hold it on their grounds three years ago. During that time, Ms. Saetta and Mr. Russell became acquainted with the camp’s staff and volunteers and learned about its mission. They then began donating lights and installing them on the camp’s grounds. “One spring day when we were installing lights, Matt and I thought that adding something new to the

camp would be a good idea in order to stimulate more creativity,” Ms. Saetta stated. “We thought about different types of objects and eventually, decided on a large sculpture.” Ms. Saetta and Mr. Russell proposed the idea to Bridget Costello, the camp’s director. Ms. Costello concurred that an innovative, artistic sculpture would enhance the camp. They approached Mr. Arnett in June with ideas to incorporate a sculpture into the camp after hearing about his immaculate wood carving abilities from a close friend. Mr. Arnett, Ms. Saetta and Mr. Russell began exchanging ideas about what type of sculpture to create. After many conversations, the idea of a phoenix emerged. “The Phoenix sculpture symbolizes the rebirth of the music festival at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck and symbolizes the strength of the children that attend the camp,” says Ms. Saetta. Although the sculpture is not yet completed, it is coming together as feathers beneath a globe with a forceful vortex above it. Essentially, it’s pushing a Phoenix to fly higher. For the finishing touches, musical notes will be added around the

globe. Mr. Arnett began working on the one-ofa-kind sculpture in July, about a month after his meeting with Ms. Saetta and Mr. Russell. The sculpture is expected to be fully completed soon, although Mr. Arnett is not sure of an exact date yet because of weather conditions. Yesterday, the Long Island region was awarded $83 million in Regional Economic Development Awards. New York State’s Regional Councils were created by Governor Cuomo in 2011 in an effort to jumpstart the economy and create jobs. The initiative has redesigned the state’s approach to economic development from a top-down model to a communitybased, performancedriven approach where community, business and academic leaders develop strategic plans tailored to their region’s unique strengths and resources in order to spur economic development. “I would like to thank the members of the Long Island’s Regional Economic Development Council for their steadfast commitment to supporting projects that will grow and strengthen Long Island’s Economy,” said County Executive Bellone. Long Island was designated a Top Performer. Highlights of the 90 Suffolk County projects funded include: · $2,000,000 to Stony Brook University to build a new Innovation and Discovery Facility designed to enhance the business recruitment power of START-UP NY and stimulate a public-private partnership for building construction. · $2,000,000 to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) to renovate a facility and establish a Therapeutics Discovery Center, which will greatly accelerate translational research efforts at CSHL aimed at developing new therapeutics and diagnostics for cancer and neurological disorders. · $2,000,000 to support high performance computing investments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) as well as Hofstra University. Hofstra will create a Robotics Laboratory in the School of Engineering to support

expanded enrollment, workforce demand, and burgeoning technologies including artificial intelligence, robotics and 3-D and 4-D printing, while BNL will acquire new high performance computing equipment for the benefit of scientific and industrial users across the region and state. · $1,500,000 to Meadows at Yaphank-mixed use development comprised of residential, retail, office hospitality, parks and open space in Traditional Neighborhood Design. · $1,000,000 to Brookhaven National Lab will expand 200 acre solar array to include a multi-region electric grid research test facility. The project includes a 1MW solar research array to be connected to the BNL electrical network. · $1,000,000 to Islip Resource Recovery Agency This project will construct two compressed natural gas vehicle filling stations, including a fully- public, four-nozzle, fast fill station in Ronkonkoma, NY and a slow fill station in Oakdale, NY. This project is intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and expand the alternative fuel vehicle network in New York State. · $285,000 to Long Island Wine Council- This program is a multimodal transportation and marketing initiative to generate visitor traffic from the NY metro area, east coast, national and international source markets during off-season and midweek periods. By opening the East End of Long Island to new customers from the NY metro area and other east coast population centers, we expect that this program will draw thousands of new visitors to the region. · $997,000 to St. Joseph’s College-Renovation of a St. Joseph’s College (SJC) building on its Patchogue Campus to create a Center for Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) in response to economic

changes on Long Island and demand for trained hospitality professionals. · $1,000,000 to Suffolk County Department of Public Works to Install sewer infrastructure in the Kings Park Central Business District for a 110 acre, 140 lot central business district area that is adjacent to a railroad station for Kings Park downtown business revitalization effort. · $1,500,000 to Suffolk County Economic Development and Planning-Connect Long Island- This project will advance the creation of a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) demonstration corridor along a 17.2 mile roadway. Specific components of this project include the retrofit and branding of six buses, procurement of two new hybrid buses, construction of BRT stations, pedestrian infrastructure, signage, queue jumps, innovative technologies such as transit signal priority (TSP), pedestrian information displays, planning and design. · $1,000,000 for continued infrastructure improvements at Wyandanch Rising, which is a comprehensive, community-based revitalization initiative transforming the most economically distressed community on Long Island into a model for community and economic revival, social and environmental justice, planning and design and public-private collaboration. · $1,340,000 for infrastructure improvements at Enterprise Park in Calverton (EPCAL). The upgrade of the Calverton sewage treatment plant from secondary to tertiary treatment will provide both economic development and environmental benefits to this regionally significant project site with immediate potential for job creation benefits.
